Project description:The micromechanism of waxy crude oil gelling is the interaction between wax crystals to form a certain intensity flocculation structure, which significantly increases the cost of production and transmission. In this paper, rheo-optic in situ measurement technology is applied to the rheological study of waxy crude oil for the first time and also to the rheological response of typical waxy crude oil to thermal history, the micromechanism of shear-thinning, and the dynamic behavior of wax crystal. Through the new experimental technique and analysis method, it is found that two types of wax crystals can be formed under certain thermal historical conditions, which have opposite performances in microscopic morphology, mechanic properties, and flocculation tendency, and the change of its proportion in crude oil is the root cause of the initial cooling temperature affecting the fluency of waxed crude oil. It was found that the microscopic behavior of waxy crude oil with the increase of shear rate went through the following whole process: the waxy crude oil system changes from static to dynamic, the wax crystal flocculation network undergoes deformation, cracks, and ruptures, and wax crystal aggregates break, small aggregates orient along the flow field, and small aggregates continues to deform and break. When the shear rate is below 5 s-1, the crack of the flocculation structure plays a leading role. It is only after the shear rate exceeds 5 s-1 that the deformation of the wax crystal and its flocs begins to function. Furthermore, according to the microscopic images of the wax crystals motion sequence, the micromorphology of different types of flocs and the dynamic behaviors under shearing are systematically analyzed by dynamic micro-object capture technology.

Project description:To study the effects of paraffin on viscosity of waxy crude oil and transport properties of small molecules, light and waxy crude oil models were investigated at atmospheric pressure and 293-323 K temperature range using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The optimized parameters for liquid simulations all-atom (OPLS-AA) and atomistic polarizable potential for liquids, electrolytes, and polymers (APPLE&P) force fields were employed. The self-diffusion coefficients, viscosity, and paraffin configurations were compared for two oil models and between the two employed force fields. However, the behavior of paraffin molecules predicted by two force fields was quite different. Simulations using the OPLS-AA force field showed crystallization of longer paraffin molecules below 323 K, while simulations with the APPLE&P force field demonstrated a homogeneous mixture down to 293 K. To provide additional validation of the employed force fields, the density, diffusion coefficient, and crystallization of pure alkanes were compared with experimental data. The density and diffusion coefficients of n-C6 and n-C14 simulated with the APPLE&P force field were found to be in much closer agreement with the experimental data. The OPLS-AA force field was found to overestimate the crystallization temperature of pure alkanes. Therefore, simulations with the APPLE&P provide more realistic description of the waxy oil structure and transport properties. In this temperature range, the paraffin molecules are homogeneously distributed in the mixture, and viscosity of the system increased by a factor of two compared to light oil. Crystallization of paraffins requires lower temperatures or/and the presence of other components such as nanoparticles or asphaltene molecules to facilitate nucleation.

Project description:The present data study deals with the experimental analysis of performance, emission and combustion characteristics of CI engine fuelled with corn oil methyl ester biodiesel blend as alternative fuel. A two-step trans esterification process is used to produce the biodiesel. Furthermore, a characteristics study was carried out on the extracted corn oil methyl ester biodiesel blends over conventional fuel. Three different fuel blends namely B10, B20 and B30 were chosen and the performance, emission and combustion characteristics of these are compared to that of conventional diesel fuel. Eddy current dynamometer is used load the engine from no load to maximum load condition. Using AVL DiGAS 444 N gas analyser and AVL 346 smoke meter the emissions and smoke opacity of the fuel blends and diesel were measured respectively. The experimental performance, emission and combustion data's were presented.

Project description:The dataset presented here are part of the data planned to produce biodiesel from flaxseed. Biodiesel production from flaxseed oil through transesterification process using KOH as catalyst, and the operating parameters were optimized with the help of face-centered central composite design (FCCD) of response surface methodology (RSM). The operating independent variables selected such as, methanol oil ratio (4:1 to 6:1), catalyst (KOH) weight (0.40-1.0%), temperature (35 °C-65 °C), and reaction time (30 min-60 min) were optimized against biodiesel yield as response. The maximum yield (98.6%) of biodiesel from flaxseed can achieved at optimum methanol oil ratio (5.9:1), catalyst (KOH) weight (0.51%), reaction temperature (59.2 °C), and reaction time (33 min). The statistical significance of the data set was tested through the analysis of variance (ANOVA). These data were the part of the results reported in "Optimization of process variables for biodiesel production by transesterification of flaxseed oil and produced biodiesel characterizations" Renewable Energy [1].

Project description:The use of an appropriate oleogelator in the structuring of vegetable oil is a crucial point of consideration. Sunflower wax (SFW) is used as an oleogelator and displays an excellent potential to bind vegetable oils. The current study aimed to look for the effects of hydrophobic (SPAN-80) and hydrophilic (TWEEN-80) emulsifiers on the oleogels prepared using SFW and sunflower oil (SO). The biodegradability and all formulations showed globular crystals on their surface that varied in size and number. Wax ester, being the most abundant component of SFW, was found to produce fibrous and needle-like entanglements capable of binding more than 99% of SO. The formulations containing 3 mg of liquid emulsifiers in 20 g of oleogels showed better mechanical properties such as spreadability and lower firmness than the other tested concentrations. Although the FTIR spectra of all the formulations were similar, which indicated not much variation in the molecular interactions, XRD diffractograms confirmed the presence of β' form of fat crystals. Further, the mentioned formulations also showed larger average crystallite sizes, which was supported by slow gelation kinetics. A characteristic melting point (Tm~60 °C) of triglyceride was visualized through DSC thermograms. However, a higher melting point in the case of few formulations suggests the possibility of even a stable β polymorph. The formed oleogels indicated the significant contribution of diffusion for curcumin release. Altogether, the use of SFW and SO oleogels with modified properties using biodegradable emulsifiers can be beneficial in replacing saturated fats and fat-derived products.

Project description:Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an n-alkane degrader that is frequently isolated from petroleum-contaminated sites and produces factors that enhance its competitiveness and survival in many environments. In this study, one such factor, pyocyanin, has been detected in an oil-degrading culture containing P. aeruginosa and is a redox-active compound capable of inhibiting microbial growth. To examine the effects of pyocyanin further, an oil-degrading culture was grown with and without 9.5 microM pyocyanin and microbial community structure and oil degradation were monitored for 50 days. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of cultures revealed a decrease in the microbial community diversity in the pyocyanin-amended cultures compared to that of the unamended cultures. Two members of the microbial community in pure culture exhibited intermediate and high sensitivities to pyocyanin corresponding to intermediate and low levels of activity for the antioxidant enzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase, respectively. Another member of the community that remained constant in the DGGE gels over the 50-day culture incubation period exhibited no sensitivity to pyocyanin, corresponding to a high level of catalase and superoxide dismutase when examined in pure culture. Pyocyanin also affected the overall degradation of the crude oil. At 50 days, the culture without pyocyanin had decreased polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compared to the pyocyanin-amended culture, with a specific reduction in the degradation of dibenzothiophenes, naphthalenes, and C(29) and C(30) hopanes. This study demonstrated that pyocyanin influenced the diversity of the microbial community and suggests the importance of understanding how interspecies interactions influence the degradation capability of a microbial community.
