Data on anti-corrosion characteristics of eco-friendly inhibitive extract on the hot corrosion degradation trend of A6063 aluminum alloy in 1.0?M HCl solution.

ABSTRACT: The study of Lasienthera africanum as corrosion inhibitor for A6063 grade aluminum alloy in 1.0?M HCl acid solution using weight loss method of corrosion study was investigated at 30?°C and 40?°C to check its degradation trend at high varying temperature application. The results revealed that L. africanum in 1.0?M acidic environment decreased the corrosion rate at various concentrations considered. Inhibitor efficiency (IE) as high as 98.7 and 94.9% both at 30?°C and 40?°C respectively, was observed.

AEO7 Surfactant as an Eco-Friendly Corrosion Inhibitor for Carbon Steel in HCl solution.

Project description:The impact of AEO7 surfactant on the corrosion inhibition of carbon steel (C-steel) in 0.5 M HCl solution at temperatures between 20 °C and 50 °C was elucidated using weight loss and different electrochemical techniques. The kinetics and thermodynamic parameters of the corrosion and inhibition processes were reported. The corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE%) improved as the concentration of AEO7 increased. In addition, a synergistic effect was observed when a concentration of 1 × 10-3 mol L-1 or higher of potassium iodide (KI) was added to 40 µmol L-1 of the AEO7 inhibitor where the corrosion IE% increased from 87.4% to 99.2%. Also, it was found that the adsorption of AEO7 surfactant on C-steel surface followed the Freundlich isotherm. Furthermore, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization measurements indicated that AEO7 was physically adsorbed on the steel surface. The surface topography was examined using an optical profilometer, an atomic force microscope (AFM), and a scanning electron-microscope (SEM) coupled with an energy dispersion X-ray (EDX) unit. Quantum chemical calculations based on the density functional theory were performed to understand the relationship between the corrosion IE% and the molecular structure of the AEO7 molecule.

Guar Gum as an Eco-Friendly Corrosion Inhibitor for Pure Aluminium in 1-M HCl Solution.

Project description:Guar gum (GG) was investigated as a possible eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for pure aluminium in a 1-M HCl solution at different temperatures and immersion times using gravimetric and electrochemical techniques. The results showed that GG was a good corrosion inhibitor for pure aluminium in the studied environment. The inhibition efficiency of GG increased with increasing inhibitor concentration and immersion time but decreased with increasing temperature. Polarisation measurements revealed that GG was a mixed type inhibitor with a higher influence on the cathodic reaction. The adsorption behaviour of the investigated inhibitor was found to obey the Temkin adsorption isotherm and the calculated values of the standard free adsorption energy indicate mixed-type adsorption, with the physical adsorption being more dominant. The associated activation energy (Ea) and the heat of adsorption (Qa) supported the physical adsorption nature of the inhibitor. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman/SERS were used to explain the adsorption interaction between the inhibitor with the surface of the metal. The results suggested that most inhibition action of GG is due to its adsorption of the metal surface via H-bond formation.

Electrochemical and computational estimations of cephalosporin drugs as eco-friendly and efficient corrosion inhibitors for aluminum in alkaline solution.

Project description:In this study, the anionic state of Ceftriaxone sodium (Cefx) and Ceftazidime (Cefz) medication corrosion inhibition capabilities for Al in 0.1 M NaOH solution are explored using various electrochemical analyses. Furthermore, the morphological structure and surface chemical composition of the impact of these drugs on the Al substrate in NaOH are investigated. For the prediction and analysis of interactions between molecule structure and inhibition efficiency, quantum chemical calculations (QC), Monte Carlo simulations (MC), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations (MD) are performed. The electrochemical findings reveal that the inhibitory effectiveness increases with increasing drug concentrations and declines with rising temperature, reaching a maximum value of 78.4% for 300 ppm Cefx while 59.5% for 300 ppm Cefz at 293 K, implying that Cefx outperforms for Cefz. In addition, the studied drugs act as cathodic inhibitors, and their adsorption is spontaneous and mixed type adsorption in its nature that obeys Freundlich isotherm for Cefz while Temkin isotherm is the best-fitted one for Cefx. Surface analysis and wettability measurements imply that Cefx and Cefz shield the Al against corrosion by surface adsorption and generating a protective hydrophobic film. Thermodynamic activation parameters in the absence and presence of 300 ppm of the studied drugs are calculated and discussed. The energies of the border molecular orbitals and computed molecular parameters for the investigated drugs revealed that anionic Cefx is more readily adsorbed on the Al surface than Cefz. This finding is validated further using MC and MD simulations. Overall, the proposed cephalosporin drugs delivered a cost-effective and facile approach for boosting the efficiency of corrosion inhibitors for Al under aggressive conditions.

The impact of environmentally friendly supramolecular coordination polymers as carbon steel corrosion inhibitors in HCl solution: synthesis and characterization.

Project description:Two 3D-supramolecular coordination polymers (SCP1 & SCP2) have been synthesized and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. In a solution of 1.0 M HCl, SCPs were used to prevent corrosion of carbon steel (CS). The inhibition productivity (%η) rises as the synthetic inhibitor dose rises, and the opposite is true as the temperature rises. The study was carried out using chemical (mass loss, ML) and electrochemical ( potentiodynamic polarization, PDP and electrochemical impedance microscopy, EIS) techniques, which showed %η reached to 93.1% and 92.5% for SCP1 & SCP2, respectively at 21 × 10-6 M, 25 °C. For the polarization results, SCPs behave as mixed-type inhibitors. With increasing doses of SCPs, the charge transfer resistance grew and the double layer's capacitance lowered. The creation of a monolayer on the surface of CS was demonstrated by the finding that the adsorption of SCPs on its surface followed the Henry adsorption isotherm. The parameters of thermodynamics were computed and explained. The physical adsorption of SCPs on the surface of CS is shown by the lowering values of free energy (∆Goads < - 20 kJ mol-1) and increasing the activation energy (E*a) values in presence of SCP1 & SCP2 than in their absence. Atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated the development of a protective thin film of SCPs precipitated on the surface of CS. There is a strong matching between results obtained from experimental and theoretical studies. Results from each approach that was used were consistent.

Biferrocenyl Schiff bases as efficient corrosion inhibitors for an aluminium alloy in HCl solution: a combined experimental and theoretical study.

Project description:The corrosion inhibitive capabilities of some ferrocene-based Schiff bases on aluminium alloy AA2219-T6 in acidic medium were investigated using Tafel polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), weight loss measurement, FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) techniques. The influence of molecular configuration on the corrosion inhibition behavior has been explored by quantum chemical calculation. Ferrocenyl Schiff bases 4,4'-((((ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(methaneylylidene))bis(azaneylylidene))bisferrocene (Fcua), 4,4'-((((ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(2-methoxy-1,4-phenylene))bis(methaneylylidene))bis(azaneylylidene))bisferrocene (Fcub) and 4,4'-((((ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(2-ethoxy-1,4-phenylene))bis(methaneylylidene))bis(azaneylylidene))bisferrocene (Fcuc) have been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic studies. These compounds showed a substantial corrosion inhibition against aluminium alloy in 0.1 M of HCl at 298 K. Fcub and Fcuc showed better anticorrosion efficiency as compared with Fcua due to the electron donating methoxy and ethoxy group substitutions, respectively. Polarization curves also indicated that the studied biferrocenyl Schiff bases were mixed type anticorrosive materials. The inhibition of the aluminium alloy surface by biferrocenyl Schiff bases was evidenced through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. Semi-empirical quantum mechanical studies revealed a correlation between corrosion inhibition efficiency and structural functionalities.

Spent Coffee Grounds as Eco-Friendly Additives for Aluminum-Air Batteries.

Project description:A new approach to the recycling of spent coffee grounds is described in which lignin, a chemical component of spent coffee, is used as an electrolyte additive in aluminum-air batteries. The effect of lignin on the performance of aluminum-air batteries has been investigated by weight loss measurement, galvanostatic discharge test, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The corrosion inhibition efficiency is improved up to 37.3% and fuel efficiency up to 21.7% at 500 ppm of lignin molecules. The chemisorption of lignin molecules on the aluminum surface improves battery performance. Adsorption of lignin molecules onto the aluminum surface is driven by the electrostatic interaction between the lignin's hydroxyl group and the aluminum surface. The mechanism for the performance improvement is explained by the chemisorption behavior of lignin molecules. The adsorption behavior has been investigated by scanning electronic microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), laser scanning microscopy (LSM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Freundlich adsorption isotherm, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and the computational calculation of adsorption energies based on the density functional theory (DFT).

Hot Deformation Behavior and Dynamic Softening Mechanism in 7B50 Aluminum Alloy.

Project description:The hot deformation behavior and dynamic softening mechanism of 7B50 aluminum alloy were studied via isothermal compression experiments in the range of 320-460 °C/0.001-1.0 s-1. According to the flow curves obtained from the experiments, the flow behavior of this alloy was analyzed, and the Zener-Hollomon (Z) parameter equation was established. The hot processing maps of this alloy were developed based on the dynamic material model, and the optimal hot working region was determined to be 410-460 °C/0.01-0.001 s-1. The electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) microstructure analysis of the deformed sample shows that the dynamic softening mechanism and microstructure evolution strongly depend on the Z parameter. Meanwhile, a correlation between the dynamic softening mechanism and the lnZ value was established. Dynamic recovery (DRV) was the only softening mechanism during isothermal compression with lnZ ≥ 20. Discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) becomes the dominant dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanism under deformation conditions of 15 < lnZ < 20. Meanwhile, the size and percentage of DDRXed grains increased with decreasing lnZ values. The geometric dynamic recrystallization (GDRX) mechanism and continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) mechanism coexist under deformation conditions with lnZ ≤ 15.

Microstructure and Corrosion of Cast Magnesium Alloy ZK60 in NaCl Solution.

Project description:In this work, the effects of the microstructure and phase constitution of cast magnesium alloy ZK60 (Mg-5.8Zn-0.57Zr, element concentration in wt.%) on the corrosion behavior in aqueous NaCl (0.1 mol dm-3) were investigated by weight-loss measurements, hydrogen evolution tests, and electrochemical techniques. The alloy was found to be composed of ?-Mg matrix, with large second-phase particles of MgZn2 deposited along grain boundaries and a Zr-rich region in the central area of the grains. The large second-phase particles and the Zr-rich regions were more stable than the Mg matrix, resulting in a strong micro-galvanic effect. A filiform corrosion was found. It originated from the second-phase particles in the grain boundary regions in the early corrosion period. The filaments gradually occupied most areas of the alloy surface, and the general corrosion rate decreased significantly. Corrosion pits were developed under filaments. The pit growth rate decreased over time; however, it was about eight times larger than the general corrosion rate. A schematic model is presented to illustrate the corrosion mechanism.

Organic Compounds as Corrosion Inhibitors for Carbon Steel in HCl Solution: A Comprehensive Review.

Project description:Most studies on the corrosion inhibition performance of organic molecules and (nano)materials were conducted within "carbon steel/1.0 M HCl" solution system using similar experimental and theoretical methods. As such, the numerous research findings in this system are sufficient to conduct comparative studies to select the best-suited inhibitor type that generally refers to a type of inhibitor with low concentration/high inhibition efficiency, nontoxic properties, and a simple and cost-economic synthesis process. Before data collection, to help readers have a clear understanding of some crucial elements for the evaluation of corrosion inhibition performance, we introduced the mainstay of corrosion inhibitors studies involved, including the corrosion and inhibition mechanism of carbon steel/HCl solution systems, evaluation methods of corrosion inhibition efficiency, adsorption isotherm models, adsorption thermodynamic parameters QC calculations, MD/MC simulations, and the main characterization techniques used. In the classification and statistical analysis section, organic compounds or (nano)materials as corrosion inhibitors were classified into six types according to their molecular structural characteristics, molecular size, and compound source, including drug molecules, ionic liquids, surfactants, plant extracts, polymers, and polymeric nanoparticles. We outlined the important conclusions obtained from recent literature and listed the evaluation methods, characterization techniques, and contrastable experimental data of these types of inhibitors when used for carbon steel corrosion in 1.0 M HCl solution. Finally, statistical analysis was only performed based on these data from carbon steel/1.0 M HCl solution system, from which some conclusions can contribute to reducing the workload of the acquisition of useful information and provide some reference directions for the development of new corrosion inhibitors.

Corrosion resistance of aluminum against acid activation in 1.0 M HCl by symmetrical ball - type zinc phthalocyanine.

Project description:The inhibition effect of symmetrical Ball - type Zinc Phthalocyanine on Aluminum in 1mol/L hydrochloric acid was analyzed by electrochemical techniques. A novel ball-type zinc phthalocyanine (Zn-Pc) inhibitor has been synthesized and verified utilizing FTIR, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR and 13C NMR), MALDI-TOF MS, and absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis). In addition, laser-induced breakdown and photoluminescence spectroscopy were employed for additional study. Weight loss technique was employed to investigate the corrosion inhibition effectiveness of the synthesized Zn-Pc on Aluminum in 1mol/L hydrochloric acid at the range of variation temperatures (293-333 K). The inhibition efficiency of Zn-Pc increased with higher concentrations of Zn-Pc and decreased as the temperature increased. Furthermore, Zn-Pc demonstrated outstanding outcomes, achieving 72.9% at a very low inhibitor concentration (0.4 mmol/L) at 298 K. The experimental data for Zn-Pc Aluminum in 1mol/L hydrochloric acid obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Moreover, the corrosion system's thermodynamic parameters and activation energy were determined. Quantum chemical calculations applying the (DFT) Density Functional Theory method was conducted and applied in this study. These calculations played a pivotal role in elucidating molecular structures and reactivity patterns. Through DFT, numerous reactivity indicators were computed, providing valuable insights into the chemical behavior of the studied compounds. These indicators, such as frontier molecular orbitals, electron density, and molecular electrostatic potential, were subsequently correlated with experimental data.
