Does California's Low Carbon Fuel Standards reduce carbon dioxide emissions?

ABSTRACT: The Low Carbon Fuel Standards (LCFS) represents a new policy approach designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by applying standards to all stages of motor fuel production. We use the synthetic control and difference-in-differences econometric methods, and Lasso machine learning to analyze the effect of the LCFS on emissions in California's transportation sector. The three different techniques provide robust evidence that the LCFS reduced carbon dioxide emissions in California's transportation sector by around 10%. Furthermore, our calculations show that improved air quality, due to the application of the LCFS, may have benefited California in the magnitude of hundreds of millions of dollars through an increase in worker's productivity.

Can green technology reduce carbon dioxide emissions? Evidence from G7 and BRICS countries.

Project description:This study estimates the impact of green technology innovation and its interaction terms on CO2 emission, by using the random and fixed effect estimate method, employs panel data of the G7 and BRICS countries from 1990 to 2019. The regression results show that a single type of green technological innovation has not a significant inhibitory effect on CO2 emissions. The interaction of the two types of green technological innovations has a significant effect on the decrease of CO2. Moreover, the study test the difference effect of green technological innovations on CO2 emission among the G7 and BRICS countries. Furthermore, we also choose appropriate instrument variables to deal with the endogenesis of the model and examine model robustness. The findings demonstrate that the empirical conclusions can hold true in the test. Based on the findings above, we puts forward a few policy recommendations for G7 countries and BRICS countries to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Mathematical modeling of vehicle carbon dioxide emissions.

Project description:The demand for transportation, driven by an increasing global population, is continuously rising. This has led to a higher number of vehicles on the road and an increased reliance on fossil fuels. Consequently, the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels has contributed to global warming. Therefore, it is important to consider sustainable transportation practices to meet climate change mitigation targets. In this research paper, a non-linear mathematical model is developed to study the dynamics of atmospheric CO2 concentration in relation to human population, economic activities, forest biomass, and vehicle population. The developed model is analyzed qualitatively to understand the long-term behavior of the system's dynamics. Model parameters are fitted to actual data of world population, human economic activities, atmospheric CO2, forest biomass, and vehicle population. It is shown that increased vehicular CO2 emissions have a potential contribution to the increase in atmospheric CO2 and the decline of human population. Numerical simulations are carried out to verify the analytical findings and we performed global sensitivity analysis to explore the impacts of different sensitive parameters on the CO2 dynamics.

Irreversible climate change due to carbon dioxide emissions.

Project description:The severity of damaging human-induced climate change depends not only on the magnitude of the change but also on the potential for irreversibility. This paper shows that the climate change that takes place due to increases in carbon dioxide concentration is largely irreversible for 1,000 years after emissions stop. Following cessation of emissions, removal of atmospheric carbon dioxide decreases radiative forcing, but is largely compensated by slower loss of heat to the ocean, so that atmospheric temperatures do not drop significantly for at least 1,000 years. Among illustrative irreversible impacts that should be expected if atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations increase from current levels near 385 parts per million by volume (ppmv) to a peak of 450-600 ppmv over the coming century are irreversible dry-season rainfall reductions in several regions comparable to those of the "dust bowl" era and inexorable sea level rise. Thermal expansion of the warming ocean provides a conservative lower limit to irreversible global average sea level rise of at least 0.4-1.0 m if 21st century CO(2) concentrations exceed 600 ppmv and 0.6-1.9 m for peak CO(2) concentrations exceeding approximately 1,000 ppmv. Additional contributions from glaciers and ice sheet contributions to future sea level rise are uncertain but may equal or exceed several meters over the next millennium or longer.

Carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from corn silage fermentation.

Project description:The European Climate Law recently codified the goal for European climate neutrality by 2050, highlighting the need for sustainable farming practices within a robust and transparent carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) accounting system. In the present study, a series of equations were proposed for the estimation of CO2e emissions from corn silage fermentation. Systematic review of previous meta-analyses of corn silage fermentation identified the mean and standard deviation statistics for key model inputs of acetic acid, ethanol, lactic acid, ammonia, and volatile-corrected dry matter loss. Estimates of CO2e emissions were determined for a mock dataset comprising 1,000 iterations of randomly-generated values for each metric in accordance with mean and variance statistics of the source data. Estimates for CO2e emissions of corn silage based on meta-analysis review of laboratory experiments were 1.9 ± 5.6% (GWP20) and 0.2 ± 5.5% (GWP100) of silage dry matter. Furthermore, model results demonstrated a precedent for CO2 recycling by silage microorganisms, which was supported by genome annotation of strains belonging to common silage species. Linear model equations for GWP20 and GWP100 with inputs and outputs in mg kg-1 silage dry matter were developed, where inputs are acetic acid (A), ethanol (E), lactic acid (L), and volatile corrected dry matter loss (DV). Ancient low-molecular-weight organic acids in permafrost fuel rapid carbon dioxide production upon thaw.

Project description:Northern permafrost soils store a vast reservoir of carbon, nearly twice that of the present atmosphere. Current and projected climate warming threatens widespread thaw of these frozen, organic carbon (OC)-rich soils. Upon thaw, mobilized permafrost OC in dissolved and particulate forms can enter streams and rivers, which are important processors of OC and conduits for carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. Here, we demonstrate that ancient dissolved organic carbon (DOC) leached from 35,800 y B.P. permafrost soils is rapidly mineralized to CO2. During 200-h experiments in a novel high-temporal-resolution bioreactor, DOC concentration decreased by an average of 53%, fueling a more than sevenfold increase in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration. Eighty-seven percent of the DOC loss to microbial uptake was derived from the low-molecular-weight (LMW) organic acids acetate and butyrate. To our knowledge, our study is the first to directly quantify high CO2 production rates from permafrost-derived LMW DOC mineralization. The observed DOC loss rates are among the highest reported for permafrost carbon and demonstrate the potential importance of LMW DOC in driving the rapid metabolism of Pleistocene-age permafrost carbon upon thaw and the outgassing of CO2 to the atmosphere by soils and nearby inland waters.

Offsetting anthropogenic carbon emissions from biomass waste and mineralised carbon dioxide.

Project description:The present work investigates biomass wastes and their ashes for re-use in combination with mineralised CO2 in cement-bound construction products. A range of biomass residues (e.g., wood-derived, nut shells, fibres, and fruit peels) sourced in India, Africa and the UK were ashed and exposed to CO2 gas. These CO2-reactive ashes could mineralise CO2 gas and be used to cement 'raw' biomass in solid carbonated monolithic composites. The CO2 sequestered in ashes (125-414 g CO2/kg) and that emitted after incineration (400-500 g CO2/kg) was within the same range (w/w). The CO2-reactive ashes embodied significant amounts of CO2 (147-424 g equivalent CO2/kg ash). Selected ashes were combined with raw biomass and Portland Cement, CEM 1 and exposed to CO2. The use of CEM 1 in the carbonated products was offset by the CO2 mineralised (i.e. samples were 'carbon negative', even when 10% w/w CEM 1 was used); furthermore, biomass ashes were a suitable substitute for CEM 1 up to 50% w/w. The approach is conceptually simple, scalable, and can be applicable to a wide range of biomass ashes in a closed 'emission-capture' process 'loop'. An extrapolation of potential for CO2 offset in Europe provides an estimate of CO2 sequestration potential to 2030.

Quantified, Localized Health Benefits of Accelerated Carbon Dioxide Emissions Reductions.

Project description:Societal risks increase as Earth warms, but also for emissions trajectories accepting relatively high levels of near-term emissions while assuming future negative emissions will compensate even if they lead to identical warming [1]. Accelerating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reductions, including as a substitute for negative emissions, hence reduces long-term risks but requires dramatic near-term societal transformations [2]. A major barrier to emissions reductions is the difficulty of reconciling immediate, localized costs with global, long-term benefits [3, 4]. However, 2°C trajectories not relying on negative emissions or 1.5°C trajectories require elimination of most fossil fuel related emissions. This generally reduces co-emissions that cause ambient air pollution, resulting in near-term, localized health benefits. We therefore examine the human health benefits of increasing ambition of 21st century CO2 reductions by 180 GtC; an amount that would shift a 'standard' 2°C scenario to 1.5°C or could achieve 2°C without negative emissions. The decreased air pollution leads to 153±43 million fewer premature deaths worldwide, with ~40% occurring during the next 40 years, and minimal climate disbenefits. More than a million premature deaths would be prevented in many metropolitan areas in Asia and Africa, and >200,000 in individual urban areas on every inhabited continent except Australia.

Characterization of Emissions from Carbon Dioxide Laser Cutting Acrylic Plastics.

Project description:Carbon dioxide laser cutters are used to cut and engrave on various types of materials, including metals, wood, and plastics. Although many are equipped with fume extractors for removing airborne substances generated during laser cutting, gases and particulate matter can be released upon opening the lid after completion. This study focused on investigating laser cutting acrylic sheets and associated emissions. Real-time instruments were utilized to monitor both particulate concentrations and size distributions, while the patented Tsai diffusion sampler was used to collect particulate samples on a polycarbonate membrane and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grid. Identification of released gases consisted of the use of gas sampling with Teflon gas bags followed by analysis using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A portable ambient infrared air analyzer was used to quantify the concentrations of the chemicals released by laser cutting activities. The results of the study found that a significant concentration of particulate matter, including nanoplastic particles ranging 15.4-86 nm in particle sizes, and microplastics with agglomerates were released each time the laser cutter lid was opened and were observed to gradually increase in concentration for a period of at least 20 min after the completion of a cut. The GC-MS gaseous samples primarily contained methyl methacrylate at a low level close to the detection limit of the infrared air analyzer.

Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Reservoirs in the Lower Jordan Watershed.

Project description:We have analyzed monthly hydrological, meteorological and water quality data from three irrigation and drinking water reservoirs in the lower Jordan River basin and estimated the atmospheric emission rates of CO2. The data were collected between 2006 and 2013 and show that the reservoirs, which differ in size and age, were net sources of CO2. The estimated surface fluxes were comparable in magnitude to those reported for hydroelectric reservoirs in the tropical and sub-tropical zones. Highest emission rates were observed for a newly established reservoir, which was initially filled during the sampling period. In the two older reservoirs, CO2 partial pressures and fluxes were significantly decreasing during the observation period, which could be related to simultaneously occurring temporal trends in water residence time and chemical composition of the water. The results indicate a strong influence of water and reservoir management (e.g. water consumption) on CO2 emission rates, which is affected by the increasing anthropogenic pressure on the limited water resources in the study area. The low wind speed and relatively high pH favored chemical enhancement of the CO2 gas exchange at the reservoir surfaces, which caused on average a four-fold enhancement of the fluxes. A sensitivity analysis indicates that the uncertainty of the estimated fluxes is, besides pH, mainly affected by the poorly resolved wind speed and resulting uncertainty of the chemical enhancement factor.
