High resolution carbon stock and soil data for three salt marshes along the northeastern coast of North America.

ABSTRACT: The data presented here includes a table of soils measurements taken at high resolution depth intervals (5?cm) for three salt marshes, two along the New Brunswick coast of Canada and one on the southern coast of Maine, USA. The data includes a table which includes the bulk density, percent organic matter, percent organic carbon, carbon stock, and rhizome dominance (if identifiable) at 5?cm depth intervals for each soil core. Shapefiles are also included which indicates the GPS position of acquired cores and sites where marsh depth was measured but no material was recovered. These shapefiles also include marsh peat depth and estimates of carbon stock for each point. Project description:Effective management of threatened and exploited species requires an understanding of both the genetic connectivity among populations and local adaptation. The Olympia oyster (Ostrea lurida), patchily distributed from Baja California to the central coast of Canada, has a long history of population declines due to anthropogenic stressors. For such coastal marine species, population structure could follow a continuous isolation-by-distance model, contain regional blocks of genetic similarity separated by barriers to gene flow, or be consistent with a null model of no population structure. To distinguish between these hypotheses in O. lurida, 13,424 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were used to characterize rangewide population structure, genetic connectivity, and adaptive divergence. Samples were collected across the species range on the west coast of North America, from southern California to Vancouver Island. A conservative approach for detecting putative loci under selection identified 235 SNPs across 129 GBS loci, which were functionally annotated and analyzed separately from the remaining neutral loci. While strong population structure was observed on a regional scale in both neutral and outlier markers, neutral markers had greater power to detect fine-scale structure. Geographic regions of reduced gene flow aligned with known marine biogeographic barriers, such as Cape Mendocino, Monterey Bay, and the currents around Cape Flattery. The outlier loci identified as under putative selection included genes involved in developmental regulation, sensory information processing, energy metabolism, immune response, and muscle contraction. These loci are excellent candidates for future research and may provide targets for genetic monitoring programs. Beyond specific applications for restoration and management of the Olympia oyster, this study lends to the growing body of evidence for both population structure and adaptive differentiation across a range of marine species exhibiting the potential for panmixia. Computational notebooks are available to facilitate reproducibility and future open-sourced research on the population structure of O. lurida.

Project description:This article presents an ArcGIS geodatabase of socio-demographic and physical characteristics derived from recent high resolution data sources to construct measures of population vulnerability to inundation in the 28 counties of coastal North Carolina, U.S.A. as presented in Pricope et al., 2019. The region is simultaneously densely populated, low-lying and exposed to recurrent inundation related to storms and incremental sea level rise. The data presented here can be used as a decision support tool in coastal planning, emergency management preparedness, designing adaptation strategies and developing strategies for coastal resilience. The socio-demographic data (population and housing) was derived from 228 tables at the block-group level of geography from the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau. These data were statistically analyzed, using Principal Component Analysis, to identify key factors and then used to construct a Social Vulnerability Index (SOVI) at the block-group level of geography which highlighted regions where socio-demographic characteristics such as family structure, race, housing (primarily owner vs. renter-occupied), special needs populations (e.g. elderly and group living), and household/family size play an overwhelmingly important role in determining community vulnerability from a social perspective. An index of physical exposure was developed using the National Flood Hazards Maps (available from North Carolina's Flood Risk Information System and FEMA) along with a novel building inventory dataset available from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety that contains the Finished-Floor Elevation of every structure in the state. We took advantage of the unprecedented high spatial resolution nature of the building inventory dataset to calculate an index of physical vulnerability to inundation of every block group in the 28 coastal counties relative to Base Flood elevations and identified hotspots where this intersection predisposes people to an increased risk of flooding. Here, we present the final derived dataset containing the social, physical and an integrative measure of vulnerability to flooding that can be used at multiple scales of analysis, starting with the regional, county, local, and neighborhood to identify areas of priority intervention for risk-reduction in coastal planning and emergency management preparedness as well as forward-looking adaptation strategies.
