Two microsized kind of powders are combined; Ti-6Al-4V and TiN. The powder mixing and SPS processing has been enhanced and consolidated.

The Wear Behavior of the Laser Cladded Ti-Al-Si Composite Coatings on Ti-6Al-4V Alloy with Additional TiC.

Project description:In this study, the Ti-Al-Si + xTiC (x = 0, 2, 6, 10 wt.%) composite coatings, each with a different content of TiC were fabricated on a Ti-6Al-4V alloy by laser surface cladding. The microstructure of the prepared coatings was analyzed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microhardness and the wear resistance of these coatings were also evaluated. The results show that α-Ti, Ti3Al, Ti5Si3, TiAl3, TiAl, Ti3AlC2 and TiC particles can be found in the composites. The microstructure can obviously be refined by increasing the content of TiC particles, while the microhardness increases and the coefficient of friction decreases. The Ti-Al-Si-6TiC composite shows the best wear resistance, owing to its relatively fine microstructure and high content of TiC particles. The microhardness of this coating is 5.3 times that of the substrate, while the wear rate is only 0.43 times. However, when the content of TiC was up to 10 wt.%, the original TiC could not be dissolved completely during the laser cladding process, leading to formation of cracks on the coatings.

Notch Corrosion Fatigue Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V.

Project description:The aim of this paper is to map the corrosion fatigue characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V alloy through the evaluation of the corrosion fatigue initiation and failure mechanisms. The study included the effect of the stress concentration factor at very high Kt values and the role of different inert or corrosive environments. This alloy is widely used in naval-structures and aero-engine communities and the outcomes of the work will have direct relevance to industrial service operations. Axial fatigue tests (R = 0.1; 2 × 10⁵ cycles; f = 10 Hz) were carried out on smooth and high notched (Ktmax = 18.65) flat specimens in laboratory air, paraffin oil, laboratory air + beeswax coating, recirculated 3.5% NaCl solution. The step loading procedure was used to perform the fatigue tests and the surface replica method and crack propagation gages were used to check crack nucleation and propagation until failure. Log-Log plots of σmaxvs.Kt showed a bilinear behavior and enabled the demonstration of the presence of a threshold stress intensity factor (Kt = 8-9), after which the environment has no effect on the fatigue damage for all the tested environments.

Enhanced Biological Response of AVS-Functionalized Ti-6Al-4V Alloy through Covalent Immobilization of Collagen.

Project description:This study presents the development of an efficient procedure for covalently immobilizing collagen molecules on AVS-functionalized Ti-6Al-4V samples, and the assessment of the survival and proliferation of cells cultured on these substrates. Activated Vapor Silanization (AVS) is a versatile functionalization technique that allows obtaining a high density of active amine groups on the surface. A procedure is presented to covalently bind collagen to the functional layer using EDC/NHS as cross-linker. The covalently bound collagen proteins are characterized by fluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy and their stability is tested. The effect of the cross-linker concentration on the process is assessed. The concentration of the cross-linker is optimized and a reliable cleaning protocol is developed for the removal of the excess of carbodiimide from the samples. The results demonstrate that the covalent immobilization of collagen type I on Ti-6Al-4V substrates, using the optimized protocol, increases the number of viable cells present on the material. Consequently, AVS in combination with the carbodiimide chemistry appears as a robust method for the immobilization of proteins and, for the first time, it is shown that it can be used to enhance the biological response to the material.

The effect of pulsed current on the shear deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

Project description:Pulse current-assisted forming is a new technology to improve the plastic deformability of titanium alloy. In this work, Shearing tests of Ti-6Al-4V alloy were conducted using hat-shaped specimens under pulsed current (electroplastic shearing) and constant temperature (isothermal shearing). The actual deformation in shear zone of electroplastic shearing was larger than that of isothermal shearing. The shear load is also decreased by the pulsed current. Microstructure variation in the shear zone was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. An evident straight shear band was observed in the electroplastic shearing specimens. The deformation model of shear zone was established. Intracrystalline deformation was markedly easier for the grains with the pulsed current and induced larger deformation of the grains along the shear direction. Microcracks were observed in the shear zone of isothermal shearing, but none were found in the shear zone of electroplastic shearing. Evident crack healing was found in the crack tip of the shear zone of electroplastic shearing.

Corrosion Behavior and Strength of Dissimilar Bonding Material between Ti and Mg Alloys Fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering.

Project description:Ti and solution treated Mg alloys such as AZ31B (ST), AZ61 (ST), AZ80 (ST) and AZ91 (ST) were successfully bonded at 475 °C by spark plasma sintering, which is a promising new method in welding field. The formation of Ti₃Al intermetallic compound was found to be an important factor in controlling the bonding strength and galvanic corrosion resistance of dissimilar materials. The maximum bonding strength and bonding efficiency at 193 MPa and 96% were obtained from Ti/AZ91 (ST), in which a thick and uniform nano-level Ti₃Al layer was observed. This sample also shows the highest galvanic corrosion resistance with a measured galvanic width and depth of 281 and 19 µm, respectively. The corrosion resistance of the matrix on Mg alloy side was controlled by its Al content. AZ91 (ST) exhibited the highest corrosion resistance considered from its corrode surface after corrosion test in Kroll's etchant. The effect of Al content in Mg alloy on bonding strength and corrosion behavior of Ti/Mg alloy (ST) dissimilar materials is discussed in this work.

MQL Strategies Applied in Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Milling-Comparative Analysis between Experimental Design and Artificial Neural Networks.

Project description:This paper presents a study of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy milling under different lubrication conditions, using the minimum quantity lubrication approach. The chosen material is widely used in the industry due to its properties, although they present difficulties in terms of their machinability. A minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) prototype valve was built for this purpose, and machining followed a previously defined experimental design with three lubrication strategies. Speed, feed rate, and the depth of cut were considered as independent variables. As design-dependent variables, cutting forces, torque, and roughness were considered. The desirability optimization function was used in order to obtain the best input data indications, in order to minimize cutting and roughness efforts. Supervised artificial neural networks of the multilayer perceptron type were created and tested, and their responses were compared statistically to the results of the factorial design. It was noted that the variables that most influenced the machining-dependent variables were the feed rate and the depth of cut. A lower roughness value was achieved with MQL only with the use of cutting fluid with graphite. Statistical analysis demonstrated that artificial neural network and the experimental design predict similar results.

Aspirin/PLGA coated 3D-printed Ti-6Al-4V alloy modulate macrophage polarization to enhance osteoblast differentiation and osseointegration.

Project description:Although titanium (Ti) and Ti-based alloy have been widely used as dental and orthopedic implant materials, its bioinertness hindered the rapid osseointegration. Therefore, it is recommended to acquire ideal topographic and chemical characteristics through surface modification methods. 3D printing is a delicate manufacture technique which possesses superior controllability and reproducibility. While aspirin serve as a well-established non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent. Recently, the importance of immune system in regulating bone dynamics has attracted increasing attention. We herein superimposed the aspirin/poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (ASP/PLGA) coating on the 3D-printed Ti-6Al-4V surface with uniform micro-structure to establish the Ti64-M-ASP/PLGA substrate. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle test confirmed the successful fabrication of the Ti64-M-ASP/PLGA substrate, with increased wettability and sustained release pattern of ASP. Compared with the Ti64 base material, the Ti64-M-ASP/PLGA substrate showed enhanced M2 and depressed M1 genes and proteins expressions in macrophages. The novel Ti64-M-ASP/PLGA substrate also displayed enhanced osteoblast proliferation, adhesion, extracellular mineralization ability and osteogenic gene expressions when cultured with macrophage conditioned medium in vitro. Furthermore, rat femora implantation model was used for in vivo evaluation. After 4 weeks of implantation, push out test, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histological analyses all confirmed the superior osseointegration capabilities of the Ti64-M-ASP/PLGA implant than the other groups. Our study revealed the synergistic role played by 3D-printed micro topography and immunoregulatory drug aspirin in promoting osteogenesis in vitro and accelerating osseointegration in vivo, thus providing a promising method for better modifying the implant surface. Heat treatment dependent cytotoxicity of silicalite-1 films deposited on Ti-6Al-4V alloy evaluated by bone-derived cells.

Project description:A silicalite-1 film (SF) deposited on Ti-6Al-4V alloy was investigated in this study as a promising coating for metallic implants. Two forms of SFs were prepared: as-synthesized SFs (SF-RT), and SFs heated up to 500?°C (SF-500) to remove the excess of template species from the SF surface. The SFs were characterized in detail by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water contact angle measurements (WCA). Two types of bone-derived cells (hFOB 1.19 non-tumor fetal osteoblast cell line and U-2 OS osteosarcoma cell line) were used for a biocompatibility assessment. The initial adhesion of hFOB 1.19 cells, evaluated by cell numbers and cell spreading area, was better supported by SF-500 than by SF-RT. While no increase in cell membrane damage, in ROS generation and in TNF-alpha secretion of bone-derived cells grown on both SFs was found, gamma H2AX staining revealed an elevated DNA damage response of U-2 OS cells grown on heat-treated samples (SF-500). This study also discusses differences between osteosarcoma cell lines and non-tumor osteoblastic cells, stressing the importance of choosing the right cell type model.

The diameter of nanotubes formed on Ti-6Al-4V alloy controls the adhesion and differentiation of Saos-2 cells.

Project description:Ti-6Al-4V-based nanotubes were prepared on a Ti-6Al-4V surface by anodic oxidation on 10 V, 20 V, and 30 V samples. The 10 V, 20 V, and 30 V samples and a control smooth Ti-6Al-4V sample were evaluated in terms of their chemical composition, diameter distribution, and cellular response. The surfaces of the 10 V, 20 V, and 30 V samples consisted of nanotubes of a relatively wide range of diameters that increased with the voltage. Saos-2 cells had a similar initial adhesion on all nanotube samples to the control Ti-6Al-4V sample, but it was lower than on glass. On day 3, the highest concentrations of both vinculin and talin measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and intensity of immunofluorescence staining were on 30 V nanotubes. On the other hand, the highest concentrations of ALP, type I collagen, and osteopontin were found on 10 V and 20 V samples. The final cellular densities on 10 V, 20 V, and 30 V samples were higher than on glass. Therefore, the controlled anodization of Ti-6Al-4V seems to be a useful tool for preparing nanostructured materials with desirable biological properties.

Microstructure and Mechanical Behavior of Porous Ti-6Al-4V Processed by Spherical Powder Sintering.

Project description:Reducing the stiffness of titanium is an important issue to improve the behavior of this material when working together with bone, which can be achieved by generating a porous structure. The aim of this research was to analyze the porosity and mechanical behavior of Ti-6Al-4V porous samples developed by spherical powder sintering. Four different microsphere sizes were sintered at temperatures ranging from 1300 to 1400 °C for 2, 4 and 8 h. An open, interconnected porosity was obtained, with mean pore sizes ranging from 54.6 to 140 µm. The stiffness of the samples diminished by as much as 40% when compared to that of solid material and the mechanical properties were affected mainly by powder particles size. Bending strengths ranging from 48 to 320 MPa and compressive strengths from 51 to 255 MPa were obtained.
