ABSTRACT: A one-pot synthesis of bulky bis-pocket A?B-type meso-cyano porphyrin, 5-cyano-10,15,20-tris(2,4,6-triphenylphenyl)porphyrin, has been accomplished via trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) catalyzed condensation of pyrrole and 2,4,6-triphenylbenzaldehyde in an acceptable yield of about 4%. DDQ served as oxidant and the cyanating agent.

Project description:Herein we report an investigation into the synthesis, metalation, and functionalization of bis-pocket porphyrins using the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. Steric limitations to accessing bis-pocket porphyrins were overcome by using this Pd-catalyzed C-C-bond-forming strategy to introduce steric bulk after macrocyclization: 2,6-dibromo-4-trimethylsilybenzaldehyde was condensed with pyrrole, and a variety of boronic acids were coupled to the resulting porphyrin in up to 95% yield. Furthermore, we show that these porphyrins can be metalated with a variety of metals and sulfonated to create water-soluble bis-pocket porphyrins.

Photoresponsive Porphyrin Nanotubes of Meso-tetra(4-Sulfonatophenyl)Porphyrin and Sn(IV) meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin.

Project description:Porphyrin macrocycles and their supramolecular nanoassemblies are being widely explored in energy harvesting, sensor development, catalysis, and medicine because of a good tunability of their light-induced charge separation and electron/energy transfer properties. In the present work, we prepared and studied photoresponsive porphyrin nanotubes formed by the self-assembly of meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin and Sn(IV) meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that these tubular nanostructures were hollow with open ends and their length was 0.4-0.8 μm, the inner diameter was 7-15 nm, and the outer diameter was 30-70 nm. Porphyrin tectons, H4 TPPS 4 2 - : Sn(IV)TPyP4+, self-assemble into the nanotubes in a ratio of 2:1, respectively, as determined by the elemental analysis. The photoconductivity of the porphyrin nanotubes was determined to be as high as 3.1 × 10-4 S m-1, and the dependence of the photoconductance on distance and temperature was investigated. Excitation of the Q-band region with a Q-band of SnTPyP4+ (550-552 nm) and the band at 714 nm, which is associated with J-aggregation, was responsible for about 34 % of the photoconductive activity of the H4 TPPS 4 2 - -Sn(IV)TPyP4+ porphyrin nanotubes. The sensor properties of the H4 TPPS 4 2 - - Sn(IV)TPyP4+ nanotubes in the presence of iodine vapor and salicylate anions down to millimolar range were examined in a chemiresistor sensing mode. We have shown that the porphyrin nanotubes advantageously combine the characteristics of a sensor and a transducer, thus demonstrating their great potential as efficient functional layers for sensing devices and biomimetic nanoarchitectures.

Crystal structure of meso-di-?-chlorido-bis-[bis-(2,2'-bi-pyridine)-cadmium] bis-(1,1,3,3-tetra-cyano-2-ethoxy-propenide) 0.81-hydrate.

Project description:The hydrated title salt, [Cd2Cl2(C10H8N2)4](C9H5N4O)2·0.81H2O, was obtained from the hydro-thermal reaction between 2,2'-bi-pyridine, cadmium(II) chloride and potassium 1,1,3,3-tetra-cyano-2-eth-oxy-propenide. The binuclear cation lies across a centre of inversion in the space group P21/c, with the other components in general positions. The cation has approximate, but non-crystallographic 2/m symmetry and each of the CdII atoms is a stereogenic centre, one having the ? configuration and the other the ? configuration. In the anion, one of the C(CN)2 units is disordered over two sets of atomic sites having occupancies 0.75?(2) and 0.25?(2). The cations are linked by two independent C-H?Cl hydrogen bonds to form a sheet of R22(14) and R42(24) rings.

Assessing Photosensitizer Targeting Using Meso-Tetra(Carboxyphenyl) Porphyrin.

Project description:Mesotetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (mTCPP) is a commercially available small molecule fluorophore and photosensitizer with four free carboxylic acid groups. mTCPP can readily be conjugated with amines for facile attachment of functional groups. In this work, we synthesized and assessed tetravalent, lysine-conjugated mTCPP, for its potential applications in targeted imaging and photodynamic therapy. Fmoc-protected d-lysine or l-lysine was conjugated to mTCPP via amide coupling with the epsilon amine group of lysine, followed by Fmoc deprotection. The resulting compounds did not dissolve well in aqueous solvent, but could be solubilized with the assistance of surfactants, including cholic acid. The l-amino acid transporter (LAT1) can uptake diverse neutral l-amino acids. In vitro studies with U87 cells revealed a non-specific uptake of the hydrophobic Fmoc-protected lysine-conjugated mTCPP precursors, but not d- or l-lysine mTCPP. Likewise, only the Fmoc-protected compounds induced substantial phototoxicty in cells following incubation and irradiation with blue light. These experimental results do not provide evidence to suggest that lysine-mTCPP is able to specifically target cancer cells. However, they do highlight mTCPP as a convenient and accessible framework for assessing molecular targeting of photosensitizers.

Electronic effects of peripheral substituents at porphyrin meso positions.

Project description:Porphyrins are stable molecules with a macrocyclic conjugated system and often peripheral substituents. This unique structure makes the electronic properties of the four meso-carbons (the methine bridges) nearly identical. Replacement of the weakly electron-polarizing 2,4-vinyl groups of protoporphyrin IX with strongly electron-polarizing acetyl groups not only leads to much lower meso-carbon reactivities toward electrophilic aromatic substitution but also results in a significant meso-selectivity (the beta- and gamma-meso-positions become much more nucleophilic (basic) than the alpha- and delta-meso-positions). To further investigate the relationship between the porphyrin meso-carbon reactivities and the peripheral substituents, two monoacetylporphyrin analogues also were synthesized. This investigation not only leads to empirical rules for predicting porphyrin meso-carbon selectivities but also provides important models for theoretical calculations of porphyrin aromaticity.

Synthesis and structure of a new bulky bis-(alkoxide) ligand on a terphenyl platform.

Project description:A new sterically bulky chelating bis-(alkoxide) ligand 3,3'-([1,1':4',1''-terphen-yl]-2,2''-di-yl)bis-(2,2,4,4-tetra-methyl-pentan-3-ol), (H2[OO]tBu), was prepared in a two-step process as the di-chloro-methane monosolvate, C36H50O2·CH2Cl2. The first step is a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction between 2-bromo-phenyl-boronic acid and 1,4-di-iodo-benzene. The resulting 2,2''-di-bromo-1,1':4',1''-terphenyl was reacted with t BuLi and hexa-methyl-acetone to obtain the desired product. The crystal structure of H2[OO]tBu revealed an anti conformation of the [CPh2(OH)] fragments relative to the central phenyl. Furthermore, the hydroxyl groups point away from each other. Likely because of this anti-anti conformation, the attempts to synthesize first-row transition-metal complexes with H2[OO]tBu were not successful.

A Cost-Efficient Method for Unsymmetrical Meso-Aryl Porphyrin Synthesis Using NaY Zeolite as an Inorganic Acid Catalyst.

Project description:Herein we report the synthesis of unsymmetrical meso-aryl substituted porphyrins, using NaY zeolite as an inorganic acid catalyst. A comparative study between this method and the several synthetic strategies available in the literature was carried out. Our method presented a better, more cost-efficient rationale and displayed a significantly lower environmental impact. Furthermore, it was possible to verify the scalability of the process as well as the reutilization of the inorganic catalyst NaY (up to 6 times) without significant yield decrease. In addition, this method was applied to the synthesis of several other unsymmetrical porphyrins, from a low melting point porphyrin to mono-carboxylated halogenated unsymmetrical porphyrins, in yields higher than those found in the literature. Additionally, for the first time, two acetamide functionalized halogenated porphyrins were prepared in high yields. This methodology opens the way to the preparation of high yielding functionalized porphyrins, which can be easily immobilized for a variety of applications, either in catalysis or in biomedicine.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, 2C(8)H(9)N(2) (+)·2ClO(4) (-)·H(2)O, consists of two (4-cyano-benz-yl)>ammonium cations, two disordered ClO(4) (-) anions and one water mol-ecule. The differences in the two cations are reflected in the N-C-C-C torsion angles [-94.7?(3) and -115.9?(3)°]. In addition, the cations show different hydrogen-bonding patterns as one N atom bonds to two O atoms of ClO(4) (-) ions, while the other N atom is involved in hydrogen bonding with the O atoms of the ClO(4) (-) ions and water mol-ecules. In the crystal, N-H?O and O-H?O hydrogen bonds result in a three-dimensional network. An O atom in each of the anions is disordered over two positions of equal occupancy.

Synthesis of Bis{meso-Tetrakis(4-N-alkylpyridiniumyl)porphyrinato}cerium and Its Redox Switching Behavior.

Project description:A novel double-decker porphyrin complex, bis{meso-tetrakis(4-N-alkylpyridiniumyl)porphyrinato}cerium, was prepared. Electrochemical measurements revealed that this complex exhibited reversible redox waves corresponding to a 1e- redox reaction of the cerium center. Treating the complex alternately with an oxidant and a reductant resulted in the reversible redox switching between the oxidized and reduced states in an organic solvent.
