Dataset for assessing the professional ethics of teaching by medical teachers from the perspective of students in Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, Iran (2017).

ABSTRACT: The present data article was prepared with the aim of assessing the instructor׳s professional ethics of teaching in Kermanshah Medical Science University from the student׳s perspective in 2017. For this data article, 260 students in Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences (KUMS) were selected by a simple random sampling method. The data collection tool was based on "Ethical principles for college and university teaching" (Murray et al., 1996), teaching professional ethics questionnaire. The obtained data showed that the teachers have an average of (3.74 ± 0.73) in terms of personality characteristic, (3.48 ± 0.75) for dominating on content, (3.64 ± 0.64) in terms of dominating on teaching practices, (3.65 ± 0.63) for understanding the different learner׳s aspects, (3.65 ± 0.71) in terms of teaching assessment and 4.41 ± 0.78 for observing the educational regulations. These evaluated data were higher than the average level. The acquired data have shown that the instructors teaching professional ethic were higher than the average level, but still it was not ideal. Therefore, preparing and editing the teaching professional ethics charter and putting it in educational content during the teacher׳s service are suggested for the promotion of this status.

Data for professional socialization and professional commitment of nursing students - A case study: Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, Iran.

Project description:Nursing students by professional socialization could catch the necessary professional commitment in this carrier. In addition, by solving the problem and having a specific and certain discipline could have act as a nurse. The aim of this study is evaluating the relation between professional socialization and professional commitment of nursing students in Kermanshah University of medical sciences (KUMS), Kermanshah, Iran. This research is a descriptive-analytical study that the investigated population were all the nursing students of KUMS, which were 80 persons and all of them were considered as a samples of this study. The collecting data were the professional socialization tool of Chao et al. (1994) and the professional commitment scale of Mayer and Alen (1996). The raw data analyzed by SPSS software (Ver.21). The Spearman test results have showed that there was no significant relation between professional socialization and professional commitment in nurses. The results of Spearman test for evaluating the relation of demographic variable and professional commitment was showed that there was no significant relation between gender, marital status and individuals age with their professional socialization. The overall results of this research was represent the weak relation between professional socialization and professional commitment of nursing students in KUMS, which this fact could decrease the caring quality efficiency. Therefore, the authorities must take necessary measures to accelerate the process of socialization and professional status of nurses.

Data on the students' body management and ego-identity status at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, Iran.

Project description:Physical attractiveness is one of the topics requiring new standards in the modern age, whereby the relationships between individuals are formed. The present data article aimed to evaluate the students' body management and ego-identity status at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences (KUMS), Iran in 2017. The statistical population consisted of 4200 students at KUMS. To collection of this dataset, 360 students were selected using the Krejcie and Morgan Sampling Formula, and the sampling method was cluster sampling. As for data collection, the Ego-Identity Status (EOM-EIS) Questionnaire and Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) were utilized. The obtained data indicated that KUMS students enjoyed proper body management.

A study of staff?s awareness and attitudes towards the importance of household hazardous wastes (HHW) management (A Case Study of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, Kermanshah, Iran).

Project description:The present study aimed to assess the levels of staff?s awareness and attitudes towards the importance of household hazardous wastes (HHW) management at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences (KUMS), Kermanshah, Iran. The awareness and attitudes were measured using a researcher-made questionnaire, which was then completed by 200 personnel at KUMS with different responsibilities. Finally, the data were then analyzed using the SPSS Statistical Software Version 21.0. The results of the present study showed that the average of awareness for man and woman was obtained 19.59 ± 3.53 and 19.88 ± 3.33, respectively. While, the attitude for them was 58.66 ± 9.5 and 61.25 ± 9.8, respectively. In terms of variable "job type", the highest score about awareness and attitude was related to physician (20.45 ± 2.41) and nurse (61.8 ± 9.2) jobs respectively. The highest level of awareness was for those with a diploma degree, while in term of attitude the maximum score was obtained for those who were undergraduate and bachelor degree. Based on age group, minimum and maximum score of awareness were related to 44-53 and 44-53 years, respectively. While in term of attitude were 54-65 and 34-43 years, respectively. According to results, it is suggested that households be trained in separating, recycling, collecting, transporting and disposing of HHWs in accordance with health standards with the aim of providing, maintaining and improving the health of families, societies and environment. It should be noted that prevention of adverse environmental effects of hazardous waste is a priority, which can be realized through applying proper management methods.

Prevalence of self-medication practice among health sciences students in Kermanshah, Iran.

Project description:BACKGROUND:The possibility of self-medication is higher in health sciences students than other students because of easy access to drug information resources and relatively sufficient familiarity with various kinds of drugs. The current study was aimed to determine the prevalence of self-medication and its related factors among the health sciences students. METHODS:A total of 250 health sciences students were included in this cross-sectional study via random sampling. Data were collected by a researcher-made self-medication questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS-20 software using descriptive and inferential statistics (chi-square test). RESULTS:The prevalence of self-medication was 89.6%. Prior experience about the illness, non-seriousness of the illness and availability of drugs were the most prevalent reasons for self-medication. The most commonly used medications included common cold drugs, analgesics and antibiotics. The most frequently used medications were cold pill, acetaminophen pill and amoxicillin capsule. Most students obtained their pharmaceutical information from the pharmacist physician and online sources. Self-medication did not show a significant difference in terms of variables such as age, gender, marital status, insurance status and residence. CONCLUSION:Given the high prevalence of self-medication among the health sciences students, training courses about the self-medication risks, more supervision over prohibition of over-the-counter drugs and adequate facilities for students' access to medical services are suggested to be provided.

Nutrition knowledge and attitude in medical students of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in 2017-2018.

Project description:OBJECTIVES:In this cross-sectional study among 220 medical students we aimed to determine the nutritional knowledge and attitude of medical students through clinical training courses (externship and internship) of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Iran. A nutritional knowledge questionnaire included 51 questions was used to determine the correct, perceived and accuracy of knowledge of the participant in different aspects of nutrition sciences. The nutrition attitude questionnaire included 30 questions. Both questionnaires were confirmed in terms of the validity and reliability for assessing nutritional knowledge and attitude in this sample of Iranian medical students. Nutritional knowledge and attitude were calculated as percentage of correct or appropriate responses. RESULTS:The correct knowledge was not significantly different among externs and interns (68.20?±?7.50% and 67.87?±?6.04% respectively, p?=?0.729). Results showed that most of the participants (49.61% of externs and 57.14% of inters) had a poor nutritional knowledge, significantly varied by age (p?=?0.035). The attitude index of the subjects was not significantly different among externs and interns (73.36?±?9.42% and 74.59?±?9.20%, p?=?0.335). Most students (92.7%) had a very appropriate attitude toward nutrition, significantly varied by sex (p?=?0.010). These findings indicate that there are multiple deficiencies in nutrition knowledge of medical students.

Teaching during a pandemic: do university teachers prefer online teaching?

Project description:Universities worldwide have been conducting e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic to continue education irrespective of faculties are familiar with e-education or not. This study assessed perception and preference for e-teaching amongst 438 faculty members. Results revealed that around half of teachers were conducting e-classes without any training, and they also had conducted examinations using online platforms. Teachers perceived e-teaching as effective during the pandemic, time-efficient, easy to share materials, unsuitable for monitoring or conducting practical classes and less effective for evaluation. More than three-fourths of the teachers preferred online teaching during the pandemic, and most preferred both physical and mixed teaching in the post-pandemic era. Their preferences were influenced by their age, teaching experience, academic discipline, current residency, training on online teaching, hours of online classes taught per week, internet connection used, types of classes and whether they had given online examinations. The major challenges in online teaching during COVID-19 were difficulty in practical work, difficulty in monitoring students and insufficient feedback. This study suggests online teaching during the pandemic and mixed teaching after the pandemic. Training faculty members on online teaching, designing e-platforms suitable for examinations and ensuring stable internet connections are also recommended for effective and smooth e-education.

Dataset of leisure time among students at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences and its relationship with health-related quality of life (HRQOL).

Project description:The present data article aimed to investigate the leisure time among students at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences and its relationship with health-related quality of life. In this descriptive and correlational data article, the statistical population consisted of 420 students at faculties of Health, Paramedics, Nursing and Midwifery in Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences who were selected through multi-stage cluster sampling. For data collection, the demographic questions, 36-item short form survey (SF-36) and a researcher-made leisure time questionnaire were utilized. for data analysis, the descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson correlation coefficient) were employed in the SPSS0.23 Statistics Software. The obtained data of the present data article demonstrated that the means and SDs of students' leisure time and health-related quality of life measured 3.25 ± 0.61 and 2.50 ± 0.41, respectively. Also, the obtained data indicated that the quality of life significantly and positively correlated with students' leisure time. In addition, the obtained data showed that in-person communication had the highest relationship with the total quality of life. In contrast, no relationship was found between the artistic activities and the total quality of life.

Improving the university teaching-learning process with ECO methodology: Teachers' perceptions.

Project description:This study presents the results of research focused on university teachers' perceptions of the implementation of ECO (Explore, Create, and Offer) methodology. Through teachers´ responses, the objective was to learn about the impact ECO has on both teaching and learning. The sample consists of 22 teachers from four academic fields; they implemented ECO methodology during the 2018-19 academic year with 1,350 undergraduate students and 175 Master's-level students. The participating teachers belong to five universities: Universidad de Sevilla (Spain), Universitat de Barcelona (Spain), Universidade de Vigo (Spain), Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) and Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina). An exploratory and descriptive study was carried out, and the data were gathered from an online survey filled in by the teachers. Twenty-eight cases were obtained, one for each course that was involved in the project. The mean values were analysed by running a Kruskal-Wallis H test and ER2 for the effect size. In addition, the thematic analysis method was used to analyse the teachers' perceptions while representing their opinions faithfully. The results showed that ECO methodology has a very positive effect on the personal development of the teachers. ECO is a methodology that comes to have revolutionary effects, improving the relationship between teachers and students, who strengthen their commitment to their own learning. It is also an excellent means for connecting students with the social and professional world outside of academia.

Project description:This data aimed to audit the dental sciences related articles published in Iranian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences (IJBMS) from 2007 to 2015 over a 9 year period performed using web-based search. The data were analyzed for topic of dental sciences, type of article, international collaborations, source of funding, number of authors and authorship trends. Out of the total 18 data related to dental sciences, original articles (12), review articles (4) and short communications (2) contribute the major share. Regarding the relationship with dental sciences, the maximum number of data were related to oral pathology and microbiology (16) followed by oral medicine and radiology (7) and periodontics (7). Among the data related to dental sciences, oral cancer (3) and gingival and periodontal diseases (3) followed by dental plaque and caries (2) and orthodontic tooth movement (2) form the major attraction of the contributors. The largest numbers of data related to dental sciences were received from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad (4) and Tehran University of Medical Sciences,Tehran (2).The present data were compared with previous bibliometric studies done related to dental sciences (Shamim et al., 2017a, 2017b).

Demographic and clinical characteristics of severe Covid-19 infections: a cross-sectional study from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Iran.

Project description:BackgroundCoronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) is expanding worldwide. The characteristics of this infection in patients varies from country to country. To move forward, clinical data on infected patients are needed. Here, we report a comparison between fatalities and recovery of patients with severe Covid-19, based on demographic and clinical characteristics.MethodsBetween 5 March and 12 May 2020 in Mashhad, Iran, 1278 of 4000 suspected Covid-19 patients were confirmed positive by real-time reverse-transcriptase-polymerase-chain-reaction assay of upper respiratory specimens. We compared the demographic, exposure history and clinical symptoms of 925 survivors and 353 fatal cases with confirmed disease.ResultsMean (SD) age for all confirmed patients was 56.9 (18.7) years, 67.1 (15.9) years in fatal cases and 53.0 (18.3) years in survivors. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the outcome of patients was associated with age (odds ratio = 1.049, P = 0.0001, 95% CI = 1.040-1.057). Despite a high burden of Covid-19 infections in the 30-39 and 40-49 year age groups, most of these (89.6 and 87.2%, respectively) recovered. The median (IQR) duration of hospitalization was 9.0 (6.0-14.0) days. The most prevalent co-morbidities were cardiovascular disorders (21%) and diabetes (16.3%). Dyspnoea (72.7%), cough (68.1%) and fever (63.8%) were the most frequent clinical symptoms. Healthcare workers, of whom two (3%) died, comprised 5.2% of infected cases. Combination antiviral and antibiotic therapy was used in 43.0% of cases.ConclusionsThe characteristics of severe Covid-19 varied substantially between fatal cases and survivors, with diabetes and cardiovascular disorders the most prevalent co-morbidities. In contrast to other studies, there were a higher number of fatalities in younger patients in our setting.
