Project description:Novel polyester polyols were prepared in high yields from biobased 1,4-pentanediol catalyzed by non-toxic phosphoric acid without using a solvent. These oligomers are terminated with hydroxyl groups and have low residual acid content, making them suitable for use in adhesives by polyurethane formation. The thermal behavior of the polyols was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, and tensile testing was performed on the derived polyurethanes. The results were compared with those of polyurethanes obtained with fossil-based 1,4-butanediol polyester polyols. Surprisingly, it was found that a crystalline polyester was obtained when aliphatic long-chain diacids (>C12 ) were used as the diacid building block. The low melting point of the C12 diacid-based material allows the development of biobased shape-memory polymers with very low switching temperatures (<0 °C), an effect that has not yet been reported for a material based on a simple binary polyester. This might find application as thermosensitive adhesives in the packaging of temperature-sensitive goods such as pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, these results indicate that, although 1,4-pentanediol cannot be regarded as a direct substitute for 1,4-butanediol, its novel structure expands the toolbox of the adhesives, coatings, or sealants formulators.

Project description:Synthesis of high molecular weight polyesters prepared by acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of bis(undec-10-enoate) with isosorbide (M1), isomannide (M2), and 1,3-propanediol (M3) and the subsequent hydrogenation have been achieved by using a molybdenum-alkylidene catalyst. The resultant polymers (P1) prepared by the ADMET polymerization of M1 (in toluene at 25 °C) possessed high Mn values (Mn = 44400-49400 g/mol), and no significant differences in the Mn values and the PDI (Mw/Mn) values were observed in the samples after the hydrogenation. Both the tensile strength and the elongation at break in the hydrogenated polymers from M1 (HP1) increased upon increasing the molar mass, and the sample with an Mn value of 48200 exhibited better tensile properties (tensile strength of 39.7 MPa, elongation at break of 436%) than conventional polyethylene, polypropylene, as well as polyester containing C18 alkyl chains. The tensile properties were affected by the diol segment employed, whereas HP2 showed a similar property to HP1.

Project description:Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) are versatile polymers presenting a broad range of properties as a result of their countless combination of raw materials-in essence, isocyanates, polyols, and chain extenders. This study highlights the effect of two different chain extenders and their combination on the structure-property relationships of TPUs synthesized by reactive extrusion. The TPUs were obtained from 4,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), polyester diols, and the chain extenders 1,4-butanediol (BDO) and dipropylene glycol (DPG). The BDO/DPG ratios studied were 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, and 0/100 wt.%. The TPUs were characterized by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), UV-vis spectroscopy, and physical-mechanical properties. The results indicate that DPG promotes compatibility between rigid (HS) and flexible (SS) segments of TPUs. Consequently, increasing DPG content (>75 wt.%) reduced the organization of the rigid segments and the degree of phase separation, increasing the polydispersity of the interdomain distance and the transparency in the UV-visible spectrum of the TPUs. Furthermore, increasing DPG content also reduced the amount of hydrogen bonds present in the rigid phase, reducing or extinguishing its glass transition temperature (TgHS) and melting temperature (Tm), and increasing the glass transition temperature of the flexible phase (TgSS). Therefore, increasing DPG content leads to a deterioration in mechanical properties and hydrolysis resistance.

Project description:Nowadays, "green" is a hot topic almost everywhere, from retailers to universities to industries; and achieving a green status has become a universal aim. However, polymers are commonly considered not to be "green", being associated with massive energy consumption and severe pollution problems (for example, the "Plastic Soup") as a public stereotype. To achieve green polymers, three elements should be entailed: (1) green raw materials, catalysts and solvents; (2) eco-friendly synthesis processes; and (3) sustainable polymers with a low carbon footprint, for example, (bio)degradable polymers or polymers which can be recycled or disposed with a gentle environmental impact. By utilizing biobased monomers in enzymatic polymerizations, many advantageous green aspects can be fulfilled. For example, biobased monomers and enzyme catalysts are renewable materials that are derived from biomass feedstocks; enzymatic polymerizations are clean and energy saving processes; and no toxic residuals contaminate the final products. Therefore, synthesis of renewable polymers via enzymatic polymerizations of biobased monomers provides an opportunity for achieving green polymers and a future sustainable polymer industry, which will eventually play an essential role for realizing and maintaining a biobased and sustainable society.

Project description:Currently, there is an intensive development of bio-based aromatic building blocks to replace fossil-based terephthalates used for poly(ethylene terephthalate) production. Indole is a ubiquitous aromatic unit in nature, which has great potential as a bio-based feedstock for polymers or plastics. In this study, we describe the synthesis and characterization of new indole-based dicarboxylate monomers with only aromatic ester bonds, which can improve the thermal stability and glass-transition temperature (T g) of the resulting polyesters. The new dicarboxylate monomers were polymerized with five aliphatic diols to yield 10 new polyesters with tunable chemical structures and physical properties. Particularly, the T g values of the obtained polyesters can be as high as 113 °C, as indicated by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis. The polyesters showed decent thermal stability and distinct flow transitions as revealed by thermogravimetric analysis and rheology measurements.

Project description:In the past 20 years, scientific research focused on the identification of valid alternatives to materials of fossil origin, in particular, related to biobased polymers. Recently, the efforts led to the synthesis of thiophene-based polymers (TBPs), a new class of polyesters based on 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (TPCA) that can be industrially produced using biomass-derived molecules. In this study, TBPs were synthesized using diols with different chain length (from C4 to C6) leading to poly(butylene 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate) (PBTF), poly(pentamethylene 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate) (PPeTF), and poly(hexamethylene 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate) (PHTF), respectively, that were processed to thin films. To investigate enzymatic hydrolysis of these polymer films, cutinase 1 (Thc_cut1) and cutinase 2 (Thc_cut2) from Thermobifida cellulosilytica were recombinantly expressed in the host E. coli and purified. After 72 h of incubation at 65°C with 5 µM Thc_cut1, weight loss and HPLC analysis indicated 9, 100, and 80% degradation of PBTF, PPeTF, and PHTG with a concomitant release of 0.12, 2.70, and 0.67 mM of TPCA. The SEM analysis showed that tiny holes were formed on the surface of the films and after 72 h PPeTF was completely degraded. The LC-TOF/MS analysis indicated that Thc_cut2 in particular released various oligomers from the polymer during the reaction. In addition, the FTIR analysis showed the formation of novel acid and hydroxyl groups on the polymer surfaces. The results showed that the two used thermostable cutinases are promising biocatalysts for the environmentally friendly degradation of TPCA-based polyesters, in view of a possible sustainable recycling of plastic waste through resynthesis processes.

Project description:Crystallization-controlled structure and thermal properties of biobased poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) were studied. The cold-crystallization temperature controlled the structure and thermal properties of the biobased PEF. The melting was complex and evidenced the presence of a significant fraction of less-stable crystals with a low melting temperature that linearly increased with Tc, which formed already during the early stages of crystallization, together with those melting at a higher temperature. Low Tc resulted in the α'-phase formation, less crystallinity, and greater content of the rigid amorphous phase. At high Tc, the α-phase formed, higher crystallinity developed, the rigid amorphous phase content was lower, and the melting temperature of the less-stable crystals was higher; however, slight polymer degradation could have occurred. The applied thermal treatment altered the thermal behavior of PEF by shifting the melting of the less stable crystals to a significantly higher temperature. SEM examination revealed a spherulitic morphology. A lamellar order was evidenced with an average long period and small average lamella thickness, the latter about 3-3.5 nm, only slightly increasing with Tc.

Project description:Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) of 15 commercially relevant biobased and biodegradable polyesters were experimentally determined by applying a novel approach to the classic solubility study method. In this approach, the extent of swelling in polymer films was determined using a simple equation based on the mass difference between swollen and nonswollen film samples to obtain normalized solvent uptake (N). Using N and HSPiP software, highly accurate HSP values were obtained for all 15 polyesters. Qualitative evaluation of the HSP values was conducted by predicting the miscibility of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHB-co-HHx, 7 mol % HHx) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with a novel lignin-based plasticizer (ethyl 3-(4-ethoxy-3-methoxyphenyl)propanoate, EP) with a relative energy difference (RED) less than 0.4. Additionally, an HSP-predicted plasticizer (di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate, DA) with a larger RED (>0.7) was used to demonstrate the effects of less-miscible additives. Plasticized samples were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy (POM) to determine the Tg depression, with EP showing linear Tg depression up to 50% plasticizer loading, whereas DA shows minimal Tg depression past 10% loading. Further analysis by POM reveals that the DA phase separates from both polymers at loadings as low as 2.5% (PHB-co-HHx, 7 mol % HHx) and 5% (PLA), while the EP phase separates at a much higher loading of 50% (PHB-co-HHx, 7 mol% HHx) and 30% (PLA).
