Limitation of Fermi level shifts by polaron defect states in hematite photoelectrodes.

ABSTRACT: The optical band gap is a major selection criterion for an absorber in photocatalytic water splitting. Due to its ideal value hematite has been intensively investigated without reaching the expectation, yet. In this work, the Fermi level positions in hematite due to doping and contact formation are investigated. An upper boundary for the Fermi level position at 1.8?eV above the valence band maximum due to the formation of polarons is identified. This results in a different concept of the effective band gap for hematite which we believe is transferable to any material with competing polaron formation after optical excitation: the optical band gap of 2.2?eV deviates from an effective electronic band gap of 1.75?eV. The polaron state acts as a limit in (quasi-)Fermi level shift, restricting the potential of charge transfer reactions. Additionally, it has led to an incorrect determination of the band edge positions of hematite in electrochemical contacts.

Direct Vibrational Stark Shift Probe of Quasi-Fermi Level Alignment in Metal Nanoparticle Catalyst-Based Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor Junction Photoelectrodes.

Project description:Photoelectrodes consisting of metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) junctions are a promising candidate architecture for water splitting and for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The photovoltage is an essential indicator of the driving force that a photoelectrode can provide for surface catalytic reactions. However, for MIS photoelectrodes that contain metal nanoparticles, direct photovoltage measurements at the metal sites under operational conditions remain challenging. Herein, we report a new in situ spectroscopic approach to probe the quasi-Fermi level of metal catalyst sites in heterogeneous MIS photoelectrodes via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Using a CO2RR photocathode, nanoporous p-type Si modified with Ag nanoparticles, as a prototype, we demonstrate a selective probe of the photovoltage of ∼0.59 V generated at the Si/SiOx/Ag junctions. Because it can directly probe the photovoltage of MIS heterogeneous junctions, this vibrational Stark probing approach paves the way for the thermodynamic evaluation of MIS photoelectrodes with varied architectural designs.

Defect Dominated Charge Transport and Fermi Level Pinning in MoS<sub>2</sub>/Metal Contacts.

Project description:Understanding the electronic contact between molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and metal electrodes is vital for the realization of future MoS2-based electronic devices. Natural MoS2 has the drawback of a high density of both metal and sulfur defects and impurities. We present evidence that subsurface metal-like defects with a density of ∼1011 cm-2 induce negative ionization of the outermost S atom complex. We investigate with high-spatial-resolution surface characterization techniques the effect of these defects on the local conductance of MoS2. Using metal nanocontacts (contact area < 6 nm2), we find that subsurface metal-like defects (and not S-vacancies) drastically decrease the metal/MoS2 Schottky barrier height as compared to that in the pristine regions. The magnitude of this decrease depends on the contact metal. The decrease of the Schottky barrier height is attributed to strong Fermi level pinning at the defects. Indeed, this is demonstrated in the measured pinning factor, which is equal to ∼0.1 at defect locations and ∼0.3 at pristine regions. Our findings are in good agreement with the theoretically predicted values. These defects provide low-resistance conduction paths in MoS2-based nanodevices and will play a prominent role as the device junction contact area decreases in size.

Surface electron dynamics in hematite (α-Fe2O3): correlation between ultrafast surface electron trapping and small polaron formation.

Project description:Spectroscopically following charge carrier dynamics in catalytic materials has proven to be a difficult task due to the ultrafast timescales involved in charge trapping and the lack of spectroscopic tools available to selectively probe surface electronic structure. Transient extreme ultraviolet reflection-absorption (XUV-RA) spectroscopy is able to follow surface electron dynamics due to its element, oxidation-state, and surface specificity, as well as the ultrafast time-resolution which can be achieved with XUV pulses produced by high harmonic generation. Here, we use ultrafast XUV-RA spectroscopy to show that charge localization and small polaron formation in Fe2O3 occur within ∼660 fs. The photoexcitation of hematite at 400 nm initially leads to an electronically-delocalized ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) state, which subsequently evolves into a surface localized LMCT state. Comparison of the charge carrier dynamics for single and polycrystalline samples shows that the observed dynamics are negligibly influenced by grain boundaries and surface defects. Rather, correlation between experimental results and spectral simulations reveals that the lattice expansion during small polaron formation occurs on the identical time scale as surface trapping and represents the probable driving force for sub-ps electron localization to the hematite surface.

Universal Fermi-Level Pinning in Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides.

Project description:Understanding the electron transport through transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC)-based semiconductor/metal junctions is vital for the realization of future TMDC-based (opto-)electronic devices. Despite the bonding in TMDCs being largely constrained within the layers, strong Fermi-level pinning (FLP) was observed in TMDC-based devices, reducing the tunability of the Schottky barrier height. We present evidence that metal-induced gap states (MIGS) are the origin for the large FLP similar to conventional semiconductors. A variety of TMDCs (MoSe2, WSe2, WS2, and MoTe2) were investigated using high-spatial-resolution surface characterization techniques, permitting us to distinguish between defected and pristine regions. The Schottky barrier heights on the pristine regions can be explained by MIGS, inducing partial FLP. The FLP strength is further enhanced by disorder-induced gap states induced by transition-metal vacancies or substitutionals at the defected regions. Our findings emphasize the importance of defects on the electron transport properties in TMDC-based devices and confirm the origin of FLP in TMDC-based metal/semiconductor junctions.

Observation of 1D Fermi arc states in Weyl semimetal TaAs.

Project description:Fermi arcs on Weyl semimetals exhibit many exotic quantum phenomena. Usually found on atomically flat surfaces with approximate translation symmetry, Fermi arcs are rooted in the peculiar topology of bulk Bloch bands of 3D crystals. The fundamental question of whether a 1D Fermi arc can be probed remains unanswered. Such an answer could significantly broaden potential applications of Weyl semimetals. Here, we report a direct observation of robust edge states on atomic-scale ledges in TaAs using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Spectroscopic signatures and theoretical calculations reveal that the 1D Fermi arcs arise from the chiral Weyl points of bulk crystals. The crossover from 2D Fermi arcs to eventual complete localization on 1D edges was arrested experimentally on a sequence of surfaces. Our results demonstrate extreme robustness of the bulk-boundary correspondence, which offers topological protection for Fermi arcs, even in cases in which the boundaries are at the atomic-scale. The persistent 1D Fermi arcs can be profitably exploited in miniaturized quantum devices.

Quasi-Fermi level splitting in nanoscale junctions from ab initio.

Project description:The splitting of quasi-Fermi levels (QFLs) represents a key concept utilized to describe finite-bias operations of semiconductor devices, but its atomic-scale characterization remains a significant challenge. Herein, the nonequilibrium QFL or electrochemical potential profiles within single-molecule junctions obtained from the first-principles multispace constrained-search density-functional formalism are presented. Benchmarking the standard nonequilibrium Green's function calculation results, it is first established that algorithmically the notion of separate electrode-originated nonlocal QFLs should be maintained within the channel region during self-consistent finite-bias electronic structure calculations. For the insulating hexandithiolate junction, the QFL profiles exhibit discontinuities at the left and right electrode interfaces and across the molecule the accompanying electrostatic potential drops linearly and Landauer residual-resistivity dipoles are uniformly distributed. For the conducting hexatrienedithiolate junction, on the other hand, the electrode QFLs penetrate into the channel region and produce split QFLs. With the highest occupied molecular orbital entering the bias window and becoming a good transport channel, the split QFLs are accompanied by the nonlinear electrostatic potential drop and asymmetric Landauer residual-resistivity dipole formation. Our findings underscore the importance of the first-principles extraction of QFLs in nanoscale junctions and point to a future direction for the computational design of next-generation semiconductor devices.

Charge transfer complexation boosts molecular conductance through Fermi level pinning.

Project description:Interference features in the transmission spectra can dominate charge transport in metal-molecule-metal junctions when they occur close to the contact Fermi energy (E F). Here, we show that by forming a charge-transfer complex with tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) we can introduce new constructive interference features in the transmission profile of electron-rich, thiophene-based molecular wires that almost coincide with E F. Complexation can result in a large enhancement of junction conductance, with very efficient charge transport even at relatively large molecular lengths. For instance, we report a conductance of 10-3 G 0 (∼78 nS) for the ∼2 nm long α-quaterthiophene:TCNE complex, almost two orders of magnitude higher than the conductance of the bare molecular wire. As the conductance of the complexes is remarkably independent of features such as the molecular backbone and the nature of the contacts to the electrodes, our results strongly suggest that the interference features are consistently pinned near to the Fermi energy of the metallic leads. Theoretical studies indicate that the semi-occupied nature of the charge-transfer orbital is not only important in giving rise to the latter effect, but also could result in spin-dependent transport for the charge-transfer complexes. These results therefore present a simple yet effective way to increase charge transport efficiency in long and poorly conductive molecular wires, with important repercussions in single-entity thermoelectronics and spintronics.

Fermi-Level Engineering of Nitrogen Core-Doped Armchair Graphene Nanoribbons.

Project description:Substitutional heteroatom doping of bottom-up engineered 1D graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) is a versatile tool for realizing low-dimensional functional materials for nanoelectronics and sensing. Previous efforts have largely relied on replacing C-H groups lining the edges of GNRs with trigonal planar N atoms. This type of atomically precise doping, however, only results in a modest realignment of the valence band (VB) and conduction band (CB) energies. Here, we report the design, bottom-up synthesis, and spectroscopic characterization of nitrogen core-doped 5-atom-wide armchair GNRs (N2-5-AGNRs) that yield much greater energy-level shifting of the GNR electronic structure. Here, the substitution of C atoms with N atoms along the backbone of the GNR introduces a single surplus π-electron per dopant that populates the electronic states associated with previously unoccupied bands. First-principles DFT-LDA calculations confirm that a sizable shift in Fermi energy (∼1.0 eV) is accompanied by a broad reconfiguration of the band structure, including the opening of a new band gap and the transition from a direct to an indirect semiconducting band gap. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) lift-off charge transport experiments corroborate the theoretical results and reveal the relationship among substitutional heteroatom doping, Fermi-level shifting, electronic band structure, and topological engineering for this new N-doped GNR.

Tunable Fermi level and hedgehog spin texture in gapped graphene.

Project description:Spin and pseudospin in graphene are known to interact under enhanced spin-orbit interaction giving rise to an in-plane Rashba spin texture. Here we show that Au-intercalated graphene on Fe(110) displays a large (∼230 meV) bandgap with out-of-plane hedgehog-type spin reorientation around the gapped Dirac point. We identify two causes responsible. First, a giant Rashba effect (∼70 meV splitting) away from the Dirac point and, second, the breaking of the six-fold graphene symmetry at the interface. This is demonstrated by a strong one-dimensional anisotropy of the graphene dispersion imposed by the two-fold-symmetric (110) substrate. Surprisingly, the graphene Fermi level is systematically tuned by the Au concentration and can be moved into the bandgap. We conclude that the out-of-plane spin texture is not only of fundamental interest but can be tuned at the Fermi level as a model for electrical gating of spin in a spintronic device.
