Strongly interacting dipolar-polaritons.

ABSTRACT: Exciton-polaritons are mutually interacting quantum hybridizations of confined photons and electronic excitations. Here, we demonstrate a system of optically guided, electrically polarized exciton-polaritons ("dipolaritons") that displays up to 200-fold enhancement of the polariton-polariton interaction strength compared to unpolarized polaritons. The magnitude of the dipolar interaction enhancement can be turned on and off and can be easily tuned over a very wide range by varying the applied polarizing electric field. The large interaction strengths and the very long propagation distances of these fully guided dipolaritons open up new opportunities for realizing complex quantum circuitry and quantum simulators, as well as topological states based on exciton-polaritons, for which the interactions between polaritons need to be large and spatially or temporally controlled. The results also raise fundamental questions on the origin of these large enhancements.

High-speed flow of interacting organic polaritons.

Project description:The strong coupling of an excitonic transition with an electromagnetic mode results in composite quasi-particles called exciton polaritons, which have been shown to combine the best properties of their individual components in semiconductor microcavities. However, the physics and applications of polariton flows in organic materials and at room temperature are still unexplored because of the poor photon confinement in such structures. Here, we demonstrate that polaritons formed by the hybridization of organic excitons with a Bloch surface wave are able to propagate for hundreds of microns showing remarkable third-order nonlinear interactions upon high injection density. These findings pave the way for the study of organic nonlinear light-matter fluxes and for a technologically promising route of the realization of dissipation-less on-chip polariton devices operating at room temperature.

Hybrid Semimagnetic Polaritons in a Strongly Coupled Optical Microcavity.

Project description:Exciton-polaritons of a hybrid type, emerging in a structure comprising semimagnetic (Mn-doped) and nonmagnetic quantum wells coupled via the microcavity optical mode are demonstrated and studied. Thanks to the susceptibility of the excitons in the magnetic quantum well to the magnetic field, all the emerging hybrid polariton states acquire magnetic properties. In that way, external magnetic field enables control over the degree of hybridization, tuning of the ratio of the excitonic to photonic components of the hybrid polaritons, and alteration of the direction and dynamics of the energy transfer between the excitonic states in magnetic and nonmagnetic quantum wells. The presented possibility of the hybridization of a semimagnetic exciton with an exciton in a material that itself does not exhibit any meaningful magnetic effects is highly promising in the context of the fabrication of-to date lacking-organic, perovskite, or dichalcogenide-based systems with strong magnetooptical properties.

Strongly coupled slow-light polaritons in one-dimensional disordered localized states.

Project description:Cavity quantum electrodynamics advances the coherent control of a single quantum emitter with a quantized radiation field mode, typically piecewise engineered for the highest finesse and confinement in the cavity field. This enables the possibility of strong coupling for chip-scale quantum processing, but till now is limited to few research groups that can achieve the precision and deterministic requirements for these polariton states. Here we observe for the first time coherent polariton states of strong coupled single quantum dot excitons in inherently disordered one-dimensional localized modes in slow-light photonic crystals. Large vacuum Rabi splittings up to 311 μeV are observed, one of the largest avoided crossings in the solid-state. Our tight-binding models with quantum impurities detail these strong localized polaritons, spanning different disorder strengths, complementary to model-extracted pure dephasing and incoherent pumping rates. Such disorder-induced slow-light polaritons provide a platform towards coherent control, collective interactions, and quantum information processing.

Strongly Coupled Plasmon Polaritons in Gold and Epsilon-Near-Zero Bifilms.

Project description:Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) polaritons in a thin transparent conducting-oxide film exhibit a significant electric field enhancement and localization within the film at frequencies close to their plasma frequency, but do not propagate. Meanwhile, plasmon polariton modes in thin metallic films can propagate for several microns, but are more loosely confined in the metal. Here, we propose a strongly coupled bilayered structure of a thin gold film on a thin indium tin oxide (ITO) film that supports hybrid polariton modes. We experimentally characterize the dispersion of these modes and show that they have propagation lengths of 4-8 μm while retaining mode confinement greater than that of the polariton in gold films by nearly an order of magnitude. We study the tunability of this coupling strength by varying the thickness of the ITO film and show that ultrastrong coupling is possible at certain thicknesses. The unusual linear and nonlinear optical properties of ITO at ENZ frequencies make these bifilms useful for the active tuning of strong coupling, ultrafast switching, and enhanced nonlinear interactions at near-infrared frequencies.

Strongly Coupled Magnon-Plasmon Polaritons in Graphene-Two-Dimensional Ferromagnet Heterostructures.

Project description:Magnons and plasmons are different collective modes, involving the spin and charge degrees of freedom, respectively. Formation of hybrid plasmon-magnon polaritons in heterostructures of plasmonic and magnetic systems faces two challenges, the small interaction of the electromagnetic field of the plasmon with the spins, and the energy mismatch, as in most systems plasmons have energies orders of magnitude larger than those of magnons. We show that graphene plasmons form polaritons with the magnons of two-dimensional ferromagnetic insulators, placed up to to half a micrometer apart, with Rabi splittings in the range of 100 GHz (dramatically larger than cavity magnonics). This is facilitated both by the small energy of graphene plasmons and the cooperative super-radiant nature of the plasmon-magnon coupling afforded by phase matching. We show that the coupling can be modulated both electrically and mechanically, and we propose a ferromagnetic resonance experiment implemented with a two-dimensional ferromagnet driven by graphene plasmons.

Near-infrared exciton-polaritons in strongly coupled single-walled carbon nanotube microcavities.

Project description:Exciton-polaritons form upon strong coupling between electronic excitations of a material and photonic states of a surrounding microcavity. In organic semiconductors the special nature of excited states leads to particularly strong coupling and facilitates condensation of exciton-polaritons at room temperature, which may lead to electrically pumped organic polariton lasers. However, charge carrier mobility and photo-stability in currently used materials is limited and exciton-polariton emission so far has been restricted to visible wavelengths. Here, we demonstrate strong light-matter coupling in the near infrared using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in a polymer matrix and a planar metal-clad cavity. By exploiting the exceptional oscillator strength and sharp excitonic transition of (6,5) SWCNTs, we achieve large Rabi splitting (>110 meV), efficient polariton relaxation and narrow band emission (<15 meV). Given their high charge carrier mobility and excellent photostability, SWCNTs represent a promising new avenue towards practical exciton-polariton devices operating at telecommunication wavelengths.

Strongly Confined Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons Waveguiding Enabled by Planar Staggered Plasmonic Waveguides.

Project description:We demonstrate a novel route to achieving highly efficient and strongly confined spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) waveguides at subwavelength scale enabled by planar staggered plasmonic waveguides (PSPWs). The structure of these new waveguides consists of an ultrathin metallic strip with periodic subwavelength staggered double groove arrays supported by a flexible dielectric substrate, leading to unique staggered EM coupling and waveguiding phenomenon. The spoof SPP propagation properties, including dispersion relations and near field distributions, are numerically investigated. Furthermore, broadband coplanar waveguide (CPW) to planar staggered plasmonic waveguide (PSPW) transitions are designed to achieve smooth momentum matching and highly efficient spoof SPP mode conversion. By applying these transitions, a CPW-PSPW-CPW structure is designed, fabricated and measured to verify the PSPW's propagation performance at microwave frequencies. The investigation results show the proposed PSPWs have excellent performance of deep subwavelength spoof SPPs confinement, long propagation length and low bend loss, as well as great design flexibility to engineer the propagation properties by adjusting their geometry dimensions and material parameters. Our work opens up a new avenue for development of various advanced planar integrated plasmonic devices and circuits in microwave and terahertz regimes.

Dynamical formation of a strongly correlated dark condensate of dipolar excitons.

Project description:Strongly interacting bosons display a rich variety of quantum phases, the study of which has so far been focused in the dilute regime, at a fixed number of particles. Here we demonstrate the formation of a dense Bose-Einstein condensate in a long-lived dark spin state of 2D dipolar excitons. A dark condensate of weakly interacting excitons is very fragile, being unstable against a coherent coupling of dark and bright spin states. Remarkably, we find that strong dipole-dipole interactions stabilize the dark condensate. As a result, the dark phase persists up to densities high enough for a dark quantum liquid to form. The striking experimental observation of a step-like dependence of the exciton density on the pump power is reproduced quantitatively by a model describing the nonequilibrium dynamics of driven coupled dark and bright condensates. This unique behavior marks a dynamical condensation to dark states with lifetimes as long as a millisecond, followed by a brightening transition at high densities.

Identifying Vibrations that Control Non-adiabatic Relaxation of Polaritons in Strongly Coupled Molecule-Cavity Systems.

Project description:The strong light-matter coupling regime, in which excitations of materials hybridize with excitations of confined light modes into polaritons, holds great promise in various areas of science and technology. A key aspect for all applications of polaritonic chemistry is the relaxation into the lower polaritonic states. Polariton relaxation is speculated to involve two separate processes: vibrationally assisted scattering (VAS) and radiative pumping (RP), but the driving forces underlying these two mechanisms are not fully understood. To provide mechanistic insights, we performed multiscale molecular dynamics simulations of tetracene molecules strongly coupled to the confined light modes of an optical cavity. The results suggest that both mechanisms are driven by the same molecular vibrations that induce relaxation through nonadiabatic coupling between dark states and polaritonic states. Identifying these vibrational modes provides a rationale for enhanced relaxation into the lower polariton when the cavity detuning is resonant with specific vibrational transitions.

All-optical switching based on interacting exciton polaritons in self-assembled perovskite microwires

Project description:Description All-optical switching is demonstrated on the basis of interacting exciton polaritons in self-assembled perovskite microwires. Ultrafast all-optical switches and integrated circuits call for giant optical nonlinearity to minimize energy consumption and footprint. Exciton polaritons underpin intrinsic strong nonlinear interactions and high-speed propagation in solids, thus affording an intriguing platform for all-optical devices. However, semiconductors sustaining stable exciton polaritons at room temperature usually exhibit restricted nonlinearity and/or propagation properties. Delocalized and strongly interacting Wannier-Mott excitons in metal halide perovskites highlight their advantages in integrated nonlinear optical devices. Here, we report all-optical switching by using propagating and strongly interacting exciton-polariton fluids in self-assembled CsPbBr3 microwires. Strong polariton-polariton interactions and extended polariton fluids with a propagation length of around 25 μm have been reached. All-optical switching on/off of polariton propagation can be realized in picosecond time scale by locally blue-shifting the dispersion with interacting polaritons. The all-optical switching, together with the scalable self-assembly method, highlights promising applications of solution-processed perovskites toward integrated photonics operating in strong coupling regime.
