In prokaryotes, the synthesis of RNA and protein occurs simultaneously in the cytoplasm. A number of studies indicate that translation can strongly impact transcription, a phenomenon often attributed to physical coupling between RNA polymerase (RNAP) and the lead ribosome on the nascent mRNA.
