Response surface data for sensitivity study of industrial spray injected fluidized bed reactor.

ABSTRACT: An industrial fluidized bed reactor was designed to convert an aqueous solid laden stream into a consistent granular product. CFD simulations were run using the MFiX two-fluid model for a fluidizing bed operating at 650?°C. A set of simulations were run over a Latin-hypercube sample of five model parameters - bed particle size, bed particle density, coal particle size, spray feed flow rate, and fluidizing gas flow rate. Data from the simulations were collected on three quantities of interest - bed differential temperature, low solids velocity, and bed void fraction. The data presented here is the full set of response surfaces generated using the process Gaussian response surface model in the Dakota toolkit, as well as the table of data for coefficients of the fitted model. The fits to the five-dimensional Gaussian Process models were 0.7797, 0.8664, and 0.9440 for the temperature, velocity, and solids packing, respectively.

Microbial Electrochemical Fluidized Bed Reactor: A Promising Solution for Removing Pollutants From Pharmaceutical Industrial Wastewater.

Project description:The capacity of electroactive bacteria to exchange electrons with electroconductive materials has been explored during the last two decades as part of a new field called electromicrobiology. Such microbial metabolism has been validated to enhance the bioremediation of wastewater pollutants. In contrast with standard materials like rods, plates, or felts made of graphite, we have explored the use of an alternative strategy using a fluid-like electrode as part of a microbial electrochemical fluidized bed reactor (ME-FBR). After verifying the low adsorption capacity of the pharmaceutical pollutants on the fluid-bed electrode [7.92 ± 0.05% carbamazepine (CBZ) and 9.42 ± 0.09% sulfamethoxazole (SMX)], our system showed a remarkable capacity to outperform classical solutions for removing pollutants (more than 80%) from the pharmaceutical industry like CBZ and SMX. Moreover, the ME-FBR performance revealed the impact of selecting an anode potential by efficiently removing both pollutants at + 200 mV. The high TOC removal efficiency also demonstrated that electrostimulation of electroactive bacteria in ME-FBR could overcome the expected microbial inhibition due to the presence of CBZ and SMX. Cyclic voltammograms revealed the successful electron transfer between microbial biofilm and the fluid-like electrode bed throughout the polarization tests. Finally, Vibrio fischeri-based ecotoxicity showed a 70% reduction after treating wastewater with a fluid-like anode (+ 400 mV), revealing the promising performance of this bioelectrochemical approach.

Effect of bed characters on the direct synthesis of dimethyldichlorosilane in fluidized bed reactor.

Project description:This paper presents the numerical investigation of the effects of the general bed characteristics such as superficial gas velocities, bed temperature, bed heights and particle size, on the direct synthesis in a 3D fluidized bed reactor. A 3D model for the gas flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer was coupled to the direct synthesis reaction mechanism verified in the literature. The model was verified by comparing the simulated reaction rate and dimethyldichlorosilane (M2) selectivity with the experimental data in the open literature and real production data. Computed results indicate that superficial gas velocities, bed temperature, bed heights, and particle size have vital effect on the reaction rates and/or M2 selectivity.

Production of bio-oil from Tung seed residues in a fluidized-bed reactor.

Project description:The current paper presents research on bio-oil production from Tung seed residues fed at 500 g/h via fast pyrolysis in a fluidized-bed. The objective was to investigate the influence of temperature on bio-oil production in a pyrolysis process. Three portions Tung residues were studied, Tung seed outer shells (TO), Tung seed inner shells (TI), and pressed residues of oil seeds (RS), all having particle sizes of 0.150-0.500 mm. The process temperatures were 350-500 °C. The physical and chemical properties of pressed residue particles were characterized by ASTM standard methods. Bio-oil component identification was done using GC-MS. Experimentally derived data showed an optimal pyrolysis temperatures for all three types of Tung residues (TO, TI and RS) of 400 °C, yielding respective maximum bio-oil yields of 53.46, 52.81, and 62.85 wt% on a dry basis (db). Apart from having highest bio-oil yield, RS produced bio-oil with the highest carbon content, leading to its greatest lower heating value (LHV), 28.05 MJ/kg (db). The main bio-oil components were acids, nitrogen compounds, and hydrocarbons. Char yield was reduced with increased temperature. Tung seed outer shells produced the highest char level (39.26 wt%) while RS gave highest char quality in term of density and heating value.

Simulation and Optimization of a Multistage Interconnected Fluidized Bed Reactor for Coal Chemical Looping Combustion.

Project description:This work established a three-dimensional model of a chemical looping system with multistage reactors coupled with hydrodynamics and chemical reactions. The thermal characteristics in the chemical looping combustion (CLC) system were simulated using coal as fuel and hematite as an oxygen carrier (OC). Some significant aspects, including gas composition, particle residence time, backmixing rate, wall erosion, carbon capture rate, etc., were investigated in the simulation. Owing to the optimization by adding baffles in the fuel reactor (FR), the gas conversion capacity of the multistage FR was high, where the outlet CO2 concentration was as high as 93.8% and the oxygen demand was as low as 3.8%. Through tracing and analyzing the path of char particles, we found that the residence time of most char particles was too short to be fully gasified. The residual char will be entrained into the air reactor (AR), reducing the CO2 capture rate, which is only 80.3%. In the simulation, the wall erosion on the cyclone could be relieved by increasing the height of the horizontal pipe. In addition, improving the structure of the AR loop seal could control the residual char entrained by OC particles to the AR, and the CO2 capture rate was increased up to 90% in the multistage CLC reactor.

Solvent-Free Enzymatic Synthesis of Dietary Triacylglycerols from Cottonseed Oil in a Fluidized Bed Reactor.

Project description:The synthesis of structured lipids with nutraceutical applications, such as medium-long-medium (MLM) triacylglycerols, via modification of oils and fats represents a challenge for the food industry. This study aimed to synthesize MLM-type dietary triacylglycerols by enzymatic acidolysis of cottonseed oil and capric acid (C10) catalyzed by Lipozyme RM IM (lipase from Rhizomucor miehei) in a fluidized bed reactor (FBR). After chemical characterization of the feedstock and hydrodynamic characterization of the reactor, a 22 central composite rotatable design was used to optimize capric acid incorporation. The independent variables were cycle number (20-70) and cottonseed oil/capric acid molar ratio (1:2-1:4). The temperature was set at 45 °C. The best conditions, namely a 1:4 oil/acid molar ratio and 80 cycles (17.34 h), provided a degree of incorporation of about 40 mol%, as shown by compositional analysis of the modified oil. Lipozyme RM IM showed good operational stability (kd = 2.72 × 10-4 h-1, t1/2 = 2545.78 h), confirming the good reuse capacity of the enzyme in the acidolysis of cottonseed oil with capric acid. It is concluded that an FBR configuration is a promising alternative for the enzymatic synthesis of MLM triacylglycerols.

Microbial community structure and dynamics in anaerobic fluidized-bed and granular sludge-bed reactors: influence of operational temperature and reactor configuration.

Project description:Methanogenic community structure and dynamics were investigated in two different, replicated anaerobic wastewater treatment reactor configurations [inverted fluidized bed (IFB) and expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB)] treating synthetic dairy wastewater, during operating temperature transitions from 37°C to 25°C, and from 25°C to 15°C, over a 430-day trial. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMS) and moving-window analyses, based on quantitative real-time PCR data, along with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profiling, demonstrated that the methanogenic communities developed in a different manner in these reactor configurations. A comparable level of performance was recorded for both systems at 37°C and 25°C, but a more dynamic and diverse microbial community in the IFB reactors supported better stability and adaptative capacity towards low temperature operation. The emergence and maintenance of particular bacterial genotypes (phylum Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes) was associated with efficient protein hydrolysis in the IFB, while protein hydrolysis was inefficient in the EGSB. A significant community shift from a Methanobacteriales and Methanosaetaceae towards a Methanomicrobiales-predominated community was demonstrated during operation at 15°C in both reactor configurations.

Project description:Since phosphorus, a non-renewable and non-substitutable resource, has become the principal contributor and limiting factor to water eutrophication, achieving phosphorus removal and recovery from wastewater is pretty essential. Even though struvite crystallization process has been widely used for phosphate (P) recovery in wastewater treatment, its application is hampered by difficulties controlling small particle size and crystal growth. This study was conducted to control the settleability of struvite by calculating and predicting the struvite-settling percentage (Ps), which is always affected by the initial concentration of P (CP), solution pH (pH), reaction time (t), reaction temperature (T), agitation rate (Ar), and inlet flow velocity (vf) of the fluidized bed reactor. The results showed that the settleability of struvite could be enhanced by increasing T and decreasing pH, Ar, or vf, and would perform worse with overlong t or excessive CP. The dynamic variation process of the solution supersaturated index (SI) combined with the phase equilibrium theory and Ostwald ripening mechanism explained the above results sufficiently. The logistic model was chosen to predict the Ps under multi-factors, but the accuracy needs to be improved.

Polypropylene Production Optimization in Fluidized Bed Catalytic Reactor (FBCR): Statistical Modeling and Pilot Scale Experimental Validation.

Project description:Propylene is one type of plastic that is widely used in our everyday life. This study focuses on the identification and justification of the optimum process parameters for polypropylene production in a novel pilot plant based fluidized bed reactor. This first-of-its-kind statistical modeling with experimental validation for the process parameters of polypropylene production was conducted by applying ANNOVA (Analysis of variance) method to Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Three important process variables i.e., reaction temperature, system pressure and hydrogen percentage were considered as the important input factors for the polypropylene production in the analysis performed. In order to examine the effect of process parameters and their interactions, the ANOVA method was utilized among a range of other statistical diagnostic tools such as the correlation between actual and predicted values, the residuals and predicted response, outlier t plot, 3D response surface and contour analysis plots. The statistical analysis showed that the proposed quadratic model had a good fit with the experimental results. At optimum conditions with temperature of 75 °C, system pressure of 25 bar and hydrogen percentage of 2%, the highest polypropylene production obtained is 5.82% per pass. Hence it is concluded that the developed experimental design and proposed model can be successfully employed with over a 95% confidence level for optimum polypropylene production in a fluidized bed catalytic reactor (FBCR).
