Finite-Size Effects in Metasurface Lasers Based on Resonant Dark States.

ABSTRACT: The quest for subwavelength coherent light sources has recently led to the exploration of dark-mode based surface lasers, which allow for independent adjustment of the lasing state and its coherent radiation output. To understand how this unique design performs in real experiments, we need to consider systems of finite size and quantify finite-size effects not present in the infinite dark-mode surface laser model. Here we find that, depending on the size of the system, distinct and even counterintuitive behavior of the lasing state is possible, determined by a balanced competition between multiple loss channels, including dissipation, intentional out-coupling of coherent radiation, and leakage from the edges of the finite system. The conclusions are crucial for the design of future experiments that will enable the realization of ultrathin coherent light sources.

(Finite) statistical size effects on compressive strength.

Project description:The larger structures are, the lower their mechanical strength. Already discussed by Leonardo da Vinci and Edmé Mariotte several centuries ago, size effects on strength remain of crucial importance in modern engineering for the elaboration of safety regulations in structural design or the extrapolation of laboratory results to geophysical field scales. Under tensile loading, statistical size effects are traditionally modeled with a weakest-link approach. One of its prominent results is a prediction of vanishing strength at large scales that can be quantified in the framework of extreme value statistics. Despite a frequent use outside its range of validity, this approach remains the dominant tool in the field of statistical size effects. Here we focus on compressive failure, which concerns a wide range of geophysical and geotechnical situations. We show on historical and recent experimental data that weakest-link predictions are not obeyed. In particular, the mechanical strength saturates at a nonzero value toward large scales. Accounting explicitly for the elastic interactions between defects during the damage process, we build a formal analogy of compressive failure with the depinning transition of an elastic manifold. This critical transition interpretation naturally entails finite-size scaling laws for the mean strength and its associated variability. Theoretical predictions are in remarkable agreement with measurements reported for various materials such as rocks, ice, coal, or concrete. This formalism, which can also be extended to the flowing instability of granular media under multiaxial compression, has important practical consequences for future design rules.

High Q Resonant Sb2S3-Lithium Niobate Metasurface for Active Nanophotonics.

Project description:Phase change materials (PCMs) are attracting more and more attentions as enabling materials for tunable nanophotonics. They can be processed into functional photonic devices through customized laser writing, providing great flexibility for fabrication and reconfiguration. Lithium Niobate (LN) has excellent nonlinear and electro-optical properties, but is difficult to process, which limits its application in nanophotonic devices. In this paper, we combine the emerging low-loss phase change material Sb2S3 with LN and propose a new type of high Q resonant metasurface. Simulation results show that the Sb2S3-LN metasurface has extremely narrow linewidth of 0.096 nm and high quality (Q) factor of 15,964. With LN as the waveguide layer, strong nonlinear properties are observed in the hybrid metasurface, which can be employed for optical switches and isolators. By adding a pair of Au electrodes on both sides of the LN, we can realize dynamic electro-optical control of the resonant metasurface. The ultra-low loss of Sb2S3, and its combination with LN, makes it possible to realize a new family of high Q resonant metasurfaces for actively tunable nanophotonic devices with widespread applications including optical switching, light modulation, dynamic beam steering, optical phased array and so on.

True scale-free networks hidden by finite size effects.

Project description:We analyze about 200 naturally occurring networks with distinct dynamical origins to formally test whether the commonly assumed hypothesis of an underlying scale-free structure is generally viable. This has recently been questioned on the basis of statistical testing of the validity of power law distributions of network degrees. Specifically, we analyze by finite size scaling analysis the datasets of real networks to check whether the purported departures from power law behavior are due to the finiteness of sample size. We find that a large number of the networks follows a finite size scaling hypothesis without any self-tuning. This is the case of biological protein interaction networks, technological computer and hyperlink networks, and informational networks in general. Marked deviations appear in other cases, especially involving infrastructure and transportation but also in social networks. We conclude that underlying scale invariance properties of many naturally occurring networks are extant features often clouded by finite size effects due to the nature of the sample data.

Finite-Size Effects in Simulations of Peptide/Lipid Assembly.

Project description:Molecular dynamics simulations are an attractive tool for understanding lipid/peptide self-assembly but can be plagued by inaccuracies when the system sizes are too small. The general guidance from self-assembly simulations of homogeneous micelles is that the total number of surfactants should be three to five times greater than the equilibrium aggregate number of surfactants per micelle. Herein, the heuristic is tested on the more complicated self-assembly of lipids and amphipathic peptides using the Cooke and Martini 3 coarse-grained models. Cooke model simulations with 50 to 1000 lipids and no peptide are dominated by finite-size effects, with usually one aggregate (micelle or nanodisc) containing most of the lipids forming at each system size. Approximately 200 systems of different peptide/lipid (P/L) ratios and sizes of up to 1000 lipids yield a "finite-size phase diagram" for peptide driven self-assembly, including a coexistence region of micelles and discs. Insights from the Cooke model are applied to the assembly of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine and the ELK-neutral peptide using the Martini 3 model. Systems of 150, 450, and 900 lipids with P/L = 1/6.25 form mixtures of lipid-rich discs that agree in size with experiment and peptide-rich micelles. Only the 150-lipid system shows finite-size effects, which arise from the long-tailed distribution of aggregate sizes. The general rule of three to five times the equilibrium aggregate size remains a practical heuristic for the Cooke and Martini 3 systems investigated here.

Transport Properties and Finite Size Effects in ?-Ga2O3 Thin Films.

Project description:Thin films of the wide band gap semiconductor ?-Ga2O3 have a high potential for applications in transparent electronics and high power devices. However, the role of interfaces remains to be explored. Here, we report on fundamental limits of transport properties in thin films. The conductivities, Hall densities and mobilities in thin homoepitaxially MOVPE grown (100)-orientated ?-Ga2O3 films were measured as a function of temperature and film thickness. At room temperature, the electron mobilities ((115?±?10)?cm2/Vs) in thicker films (>150?nm) are comparable to the best of bulk. However, the mobility is strongly reduced by more than two orders of magnitude with decreasing film thickness ((5.5?±?0.5)?cm2/Vs for a 28?nm thin film). We find that the commonly applied classical Fuchs-Sondheimer model does not explain sufficiently the contribution of electron scattering at the film surfaces. Instead, by applying an electron wave model by Bergmann, a contribution to the mobility suppression due to the large de Broglie wavelength in ?-Ga2O3 is proposed as a limiting quantum mechanical size effect.

Finite-Size Effects on Energy Transfer between Dopants in Nanocrystals.

Project description:Many phosphor materials rely on energy transfer (ET) between optically active dopant ions. Typically, a donor species absorbs light of one color and transfers the energy to an acceptor species that emits light of a different color. For many applications, it is beneficial, or even crucial, that the phosphor is of nanocrystalline nature. Much unlike the widely recognized finite-size effects on the optical properties of quantum dots, the behavior of optically active ions is generally assumed to be independent of the size or shape of the optically inactive host material. Here, we demonstrate that ET between optically active dopants is also impacted by finite-size effects: Donor ions close to the surface of a nanocrystal (NC) are likely to have fewer acceptors in proximity compared to donors in a bulk-like coordination. As such, the rate and efficiency of ET in nanocrystalline phosphors are low in comparison to that of their bulk counterparts. Surprisingly, these undesired finite-size effects should be considered already for NCs with diameters as large as 12 nm. If we suppress radiative decay of the donor by embedding the NCs in media with low refractive indices, we can compensate for finite-size effects on the ET rate. Experimentally, we demonstrate these finite-size effects and how to compensate for them in YPO4 NCs co-doped with Tb3+ and Yb3+.

Finite-size effects on bacterial population expansion under controlled flow conditions.

Project description:The expansion of biological species in natural environments is usually described as the combined effect of individual spatial dispersal and growth. In the case of aquatic ecosystems flow transport can also be extremely relevant as an extra, advection induced, dispersal factor. We designed and assembled a dedicated microfluidic device to control and quantify the expansion of populations of E. coli bacteria under both co-flowing and counter-flowing conditions, measuring the front speed at varying intensity of the imposed flow. At variance with respect to the case of classic advective-reactive-diffusive chemical fronts, we measure that almost irrespective of the counter-flow velocity, the front speed remains finite at a constant positive value. A simple model incorporating growth, dispersion and drift on finite-size hard beads allows to explain this finding as due to a finite volume effect of the bacteria. This indicates that models based on the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piscounov equation (FKPP) that ignore the finite size of organisms may be inaccurate to describe the physics of spatial growth dynamics of bacteria.

Finite-Size Effects of Binary Mutual Diffusion Coefficients from Molecular Dynamics.

Project description:Molecular dynamics simulations were performed for the prediction of the finite-size effects of Maxwell-Stefan diffusion coefficients of molecular mixtures and a wide variety of binary Lennard-Jones systems. A strong dependency of computed diffusivities on the system size was observed. Computed diffusivities were found to increase with the number of molecules. We propose a correction for the extrapolation of Maxwell-Stefan diffusion coefficients to the thermodynamic limit, based on the study by Yeh and Hummer ( J. Phys. Chem. B , 2004 , 108 , 15873 - 15879 ). The proposed correction is a function of the viscosity of the system, the size of the simulation box, and the thermodynamic factor, which is a measure for the nonideality of the mixture. Verification is carried out for more than 200 distinct binary Lennard-Jones systems, as well as 9 binary systems of methanol, water, ethanol, acetone, methylamine, and carbon tetrachloride. Significant deviations between finite-size Maxwell-Stefan diffusivities and the corresponding diffusivities at the thermodynamic limit were found for mixtures close to demixing. In these cases, the finite-size correction can be even larger than the simulated (finite-size) Maxwell-Stefan diffusivity. Our results show that considering these finite-size effects is crucial and that the suggested correction allows for reliable computations.

Finite cell-size effects on protein variability in Turing patterned tissues.

Project description:Herein we present a framework to characterize different sources of protein expression variability in Turing patterned tissues. In this context, we introduce the concept of granular noise to account for the unavoidable fluctuations due to finite cell-size effects and show that the nearest-neighbours autocorrelation function provides the means to measure it. To test our findings, we perform in silico experiments of growing tissues driven by a generic activator-inhibitor dynamics. Our results show that the relative importance of different sources of noise depends on the ratio between the characteristic size of cells and that of the pattern domains and on the ratio between the pattern amplitude and the effective intensity of the biochemical fluctuations. Importantly, our framework provides the tools to measure and distinguish different stochastic contributions during patterning: granularity versus biochemical noise. In addition, our analysis identifies the protein species that buffer the stochasticity the best and, consequently, it can help to determine key instructive signals in systems driven by a Turing instability. Altogether, we expect our study to be relevant in developmental processes leading to the formation of periodic patterns in tissues.

Electroluminescence from pure resonant states in hBN-based vertical tunneling junctions.

Project description:Defect centers in wide-band-gap crystals have garnered interest for their potential in applications among optoelectronic and sensor technologies. However, defects embedded in highly insulating crystals, like diamond, silicon carbide, or aluminum oxide, have been notoriously difficult to excite electrically due to their large internal resistance. To address this challenge, we realized a new paradigm of exciting defects in vertical tunneling junctions based on carbon centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The rational design of the devices via van der Waals technology enabled us to raise and control optical processes related to defect-to-band and intradefect electroluminescence. The fundamental understanding of the tunneling events was based on the transfer of the electronic wave function amplitude between resonant defect states in hBN to the metallic state in graphene, which leads to dramatic changes in the characteristics of electrons due to different band structures of constituent materials. In our devices, the decay of electrons via tunneling pathways competed with radiative recombination, resulting in an unprecedented degree of tuneability of carrier dynamics due to the significant sensitivity of the characteristic tunneling times on the thickness and structure of the barrier. This enabled us to achieve a high-efficiency electrical excitation of intradefect transitions, exceeding by several orders of magnitude the efficiency of optical excitation in the sub-band-gap regime. This work represents a significant advancement towards a universal and scalable platform for electrically driven devices utilizing defect centers in wide-band-gap crystals with properties modulated via activation of different tunneling mechanisms at a level of device engineering.
