RECRUITING FROM A DISTANCE: USING A HANDSHAKE PROTOCOL TO IMPROVE ENROLLMENT IN TELEHEALTH INTERVENTIONS

ABSTRACT: Abstract “Testing Tele-Savvy, an On-line Psychoeducation Program for Informal Alzheimer’s Caregivers” is a 3-arm randomized trial of an on-line version of the Savvy Caregiver program (NCT03033875). Participants are recruited from four NIA funded Alzheimer’s Disease Centers across the United States with Emory University serving as the coordinating center. The goal is to enroll 270 participants (65% White, 20% African American, 15% Latino). Over 10-months, three sites performed above their target. However, one site that was projected to recruit majority of the racial minority participants was only 50% effective in meeting its recruitment goals. To increase this site’s success rate, a “handshake protocol” was established by the site’s research coordinator and a co-investigator from the coordinating center, both of whom are culturally congruent with each other and the targeted recruitment community. The handshake protocol enabled a sharing of the responsibility of enrolling participants. During pre-set phone calls each week, the research coordinator introduced potential participants to the investigator who then further explained the study and engaged them in the consent process. Within the first month of implementation, recruitment increased by 20%. Within five months, a 338% growth in study enrollment occurred for this site. This protocol is an example of a successful, innovative approach to enrolling minority study participants from a distance.
