RESEARCHING THE CHALLENGES OF FAMILY CAREGIVERS: FINDINGS FROM THE DEMENTIA BEHAVIOR STUDY

ABSTRACT: Abstract While a strong descriptive evidence base exists on the physical and emotional experience of dementia caregivers, less attention has been given to the challenges of researching other often overlooked aspects of dementia caregiving that caregivers commonly report. Research in any special population requires increased time and attention to engage the community and understand the particular needs of the targeted group. This session focuses on lessons learned from the Dementia Behavior Study, a recent randomized trial of 250 dyads of persons with dementia and their caregivers (NCT01892579). Session 1 focuses on strategies to enhance recruitment and retention of community based dyads of persons with dementia and family caregivers. Session 2 focuses on the factors affecting family caregivers’ reports of financial distress. Session 3 focuses on the caregivers’ negative style of communication and self reports of caregiver depression and burden. Together these findings highlight the complex nature of dementia caregiving and the methodological challenges associated with investigating complex relational phenomena.
