Luminescent color control of Langmuir-Blodgett film by emission enhancement using a planar metal layer.

ABSTRACT: A metal enhanced emission of more than 20-fold is observed from a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer on a planar aluminum layer with a polymer spacer. The spectral change of the metal enhanced emission using the metal layer is discussed experimentally and theoretically. Finite-difference time-domain simulations and transfer matrix calculations have been performed to investigate the cause of the enhancement. The analytical solution of the enhancement factor of the interference enhancement is also derived assuming the planar aluminum layer as a perfect electric conductor. Furthermore, we have demonstrated control of emission color of the LB film from the yellow-green to blue or red using the metal enhanced emission.

Structure and Elastic Properties of an Unsymmetrical Bi-Heterocyclic Azo Compound in the Langmuir Monolayer and Langmuir-Blodgett Film.

Project description:We study the structure and elastic properties of the bi-heterocyclic azo compound at the air-water interface through surface pressure (π)-area (A) isotherm recording followed by transferring them on hydrophilic and hydrophobic Si surfaces by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition method. A substantial change in the area/molecule is observed as a function of subphase pH and temperature. Such parameters strongly influence intramolecular interactions within azo molecules and the interactions between azo molecules and water that manifested in higher surface activity at low temperature and high pH, which in turn modifies the elasticity of azo assembly at the air-water interface. A large pH-dependent hysteresis with negative change in entropy, indicating molecular rearrangements, is observed. Molecular assembly formed at the air-water interface is then transferred onto hydrophilic and hydrophobic Si surfaces at two different surface pressures (5 and 30 mN/m) by the LB technique. The structural analysis performed by X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy techniques suggests that the LB films exhibit an abrupt layered structure on hydrophilic Si, whereas an overall rough film is formed on hydrophobic Si. The coverage and compactness of individual layers are found to increase with the deposition pressure (5 to 30 mN/m).

Two-Dimensional Layered Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Thin-Film Fabrication by Langmuir-Blodgett and Intercalation Techniques.

Project description:We demonstrate the formation of a well-organized thin film of two-dimensional (2D) layered (C18H37NH3)2PbI4 hybrid perovskite by immersing octadecyl amine (ODA) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films in an aqueous solution of PbI2/HI. The immersed films exhibit a sharp absorption band at 486 nm (2.55 eV), which is assigned to the excitonic absorption. The film exhibits a bright green emission under ultraviolet light at room temperature. The photoluminescence spectrum has a distinct peak at 497 nm (2.49 eV) and is a mirror image of the absorption spectrum. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses reveal that the film has a bilayer-like structure with a d-spacing of 6.4 nm, which is equal to that of a (C18H37NH3)2PbI4 perovskite single crystal with a quantum well (QW) structure. Only intense peaks of the (0 0 l) (l = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24) reflections are observed in the out-of-plane XRD pattern, indicating that the c axis is vertically oriented with respect to the substrate surface, and the orientational order is remarkably high. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveals that the ODA molecules are protonated in the PbI2/HI solution. These results suggest that the nitrogen atoms of the ODA molecules in the film are protonated in the PbI2/HI solution, and then, inorganic layers of the PbI6 octahedra are intercalated in the alkyl ammonium film to neutralize the positive charge and form a QW structure. Fluorescence microscopy observation reveals that the 2D layered (C18H37NH3)2PbI4 film has a relatively uniform surface, reflecting the well-organized layered structure of the base material (ODA LB film). Because the intercalation process can be applied to various metal cations and halogen anions, we believe that the proposed technique will aid in the development of highly efficient 2D layered organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials.

Interfacial Behavior of Cubosomes: Combined Langmuir-Blodgett/Langmuir-Schaefer and AFM Investigations.

Project description:The Langmuir technique was applied for the first time to compare the layers obtained by spreading lipid liquid-crystalline nanoparticles monoolein 1-oleoyl-rac-glycerol (GMO)/Pluronic F108 cubosomes with the monolayers obtained by mixing the same components in chloroform at the air-water interface. The differences in the monolayer behavior and in the acting intermolecular forces were examined. The similarity of the isotherms obtained for the mixed components system and the cubosome-derived layer proved the disintegration of cubosomes into a single monolayer upon contact with the air-water interface. Despite the low Pluronic F108 content in both types of layers, a strong structural role of this stabilizer was also demonstrated. Cubosome-derived systems supported on hydrophilic mica substrates were prepared either using the combined Langmuir-Blodgett and Langmuir-Schaefer technique or via direct adsorption from the solution. The topographies of the obtained layers were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Images obtained in the air mode revealed the disintegration of cubosomes and the formation of large crystallized structures of the polymer, while AFM imaging performed in water confirmed the presence of intact cubosomes on the surface of mica. We proved that the original structure of cubosomes remains on one condition: the films must not dry out; therefore, the aqueous environment must be preserved. This new approach provides an explanation in the ongoing discussion of what happens to lipid nanoparticles with or without cargo when they come into contact with an interface.

Characteristics of Phospholipid-Immunosuppressant-Antioxidant Mixed Langmuir-Blodgett Films.

Project description:Hemocompatibility is one of the major criteria for the successful cardiovascular applicability of novel biomaterials. In this context, monolayers of certain biomolecules can be used to improve surface biocompatibility. To this end, biocoatings incorporating a phospholipid (1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, DOPC), an immunosuppressant (cyclosporine A, CsA), and an antioxidant material (lauryl gallate, LG) were fabricated by depositing Langmuir films onto gold or mica substrates using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. These LB monolayers were thoroughly characterized by means of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and contact angle (CA) measurements. The obtained results indicate that the properties of these LB films are modulated by the monolayer composition. The presence of LG in the three-component systems (DOPC-CsA-LG) increases the molecular packing and the surface coverage of the substrate, which affects the wettability of the biocoating. From the different compositions studied here, we conclude that DOPC-CsA-LG monolayers with a DOPC/CsA ratio of 1:1 and LG molar fractions of 0.50 and 0.75 exhibit improved surface biocompatible characteristics. These results open up new perspectives on our knowledge and better understanding of phenomena at the biomaterial/host interface.

Large Area Fabrication of Semiconducting Phosphorene by Langmuir-Blodgett Assembly.

Project description:Phosphorene is a recently new member of the family of two dimensional (2D) inorganic materials. Besides its synthesis it is of utmost importance to deposit this material as thin film in a way that represents a general applicability for 2D materials. Although a considerable number of solvent based methodologies have been developed for exfoliating black phosphorus, so far there are no reports on controlled organization of these exfoliated nanosheets on substrates. Here, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, a mixture of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and deoxygenated water is employed as a subphase in Langmuir-Blodgett trough for assembling the nanosheets followed by their deposition on substrates and studied its field-effect transistor characteristics. Electron microscopy reveals the presence of densely aligned, crystalline, ultra-thin sheets of pristine phosphorene having lateral dimensions larger than hundred of microns. Furthermore, these assembled nanosheets retain their electronic properties and show a high current modulation of 104 at room temperature in field-effect transistor devices. The proposed technique provides semiconducting phosphorene thin films that are amenable for large area applications.

Single-step fabrication and work function engineering of Langmuir-Blodgett assembled few-layer graphene films with Li and Au salts.

Project description:To implement large-area solution-processed graphene films in low-cost transparent conductor applications, it is necessary to have the control over the work function (WF) of the film. In this study we demonstrate a straightforward single-step chemical approach for modulating the work function of graphene films. In our approach, chemical doping of the film is introduced at the moment of its formation. The films are self-assembled from liquid-phase exfoliated few-layer graphene sheet dispersions by Langmuir-Blodgett technique at the water-air interfaces. To achieve a single-step chemical doping, metal standard solutions are introduced instead of water. Li standard solutions (LiCl, LiNO3, Li2CO3) were used as n-dopant, and gold standard solution, H(AuCl4), as p-dopant. Li based salts decrease the work function, while Au based salts increase the work function of the entire film. The maximal doping in both directions yields a significant range of around 0.7?eV for the work function modulation. In all cases when Li-based salts are introduced, electrical properties of the film deteriorate. Further, lithium nitrate (LiNO3) was selected as the best choice for n-type doping since it provides the largest work function modulation (by 400?meV), and the least influence on the electrical properties of the film.

Excitonic Energy Transfer within InP/ZnS Quantum Dot Langmuir-Blodgett Assemblies.

Project description:Interparticle energy transfer offers great promise to a diverse range of applications ranging from artificial solar energy harvesting to nanoscale rulers in biology. Here, we assembled InP/ZnS core/shell quantum dot monolayers via the Langmuir-Blodgett technique and studied the effect of ZnS shell thickness on the excitonic energy transfer within these core/shell quantum dots. Three types of InP-based core/shell quantum dot Langmuir-Blodgett assemblies with different ZnS shell thicknesses were assembled. The structural and optical properties of colloidal quantum dots reveal the successful multiple ZnS shell growth, and atomic force microscopy studies show the smoothness of the assembled monolayers. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) studies of the thick-shell QD monolayer reveal narrower lifetime distribution in comparison with the thin-shell QD monolayer. The interparticle excitonic energy transfer was studied by spectrally resolved PL traces, and higher energy transfer was observed for the thin-shell InP/1ZnS QD monolayer. Finally, we calculated the average exciton energy and indicated that the energy transfer induced exciton energy shift decreased significantly from 95 to 27 meV after multiple ZnS shell growth.

Electrochemical Fine-Tuning of the Chemoresponsiveness of Langmuir-Blodgett Graphene Oxide Films.

Project description:Graphene oxide has been widely deployed in electrical sensors for monitoring physical, chemical, and biological processes. The presence of abundant oxygen functional groups makes it an ideal substrate for integrating biological functional units to assemblies. However, the introduction of this type of defects on the surface of graphene has a deleterious effect on its electrical properties. Therefore, adjusting the surface chemistry of graphene oxide is of utmost relevance for addressing the immobilization of biomolecules, while preserving its electrochemical integrity. Herein, we describe the direct immobilization of glucose oxidase onto graphene oxide-based electrodes prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett assembly. Electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide allowed to control its surface chemistry and, by this, regulate the nature and density of binding sites for the enzyme and the overall responsiveness of the Langmuir-Blodgett biofilm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance, and electrochemical measurements were used to characterize the compositional and functional features of these biointerfaces. Covalent binding between amine groups on glucose oxidase and epoxy and carbonyl groups on the surface of graphene oxide was successfully used to build up stable and active enzymatic assemblies. This approach constitutes a simple, quick, and efficient route to locally address functional proteins at interfaces without the need for additives or complex modifiers to direct the adsorption process.

Fabrication of gold nanoparticles tethered in heat-cooled calf thymus-deoxyribonucleic acid Langmuir-Blodgett film as effective surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensing platform.

Project description:SERS active substrate fabricated through self-assembly of Gold nanoparticles on the disjointed networks of Heat-cooled Calf Thymus DNA (HC-Ct DNA) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film has been reported. Adsorption kinetics of HC-Ct DNA molecules at the air-water interface has been studied explicitly. The UV-Vis electronic absorption spectra in conjunction with the FESEM images collectively suggest the presence of H- type aggregated domains most likely owing to plane-to-plane self-association of the HC-Ct DNA molecules aligned vertically on the surface of the LB film. Elemental composition and the morphological features of the as-prepared substrate (APS) are explored from XPS analysis and the FESEM, AFM images respectively. The SERS efficacy of the APS has been tested with trace concentrations of 4-Mercaptopyridine molecule. Finally, this SERS active substrate has also been used for the detection of malathion at ultrasensitive concentrations.

Inert Liquid Exfoliation and Langmuir-Type Thin Film Deposition of Semimetallic Metal Diborides.

Project description:Graphite is one of only a few layered materials that can be exfoliated into nanosheets with semimetallic properties, which limits the applications of nanosheet-based electrodes to material combinations compatible with the work function of graphene. It is therefore important to identify additional metallic or semimetallic two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials that can be processed in solution for scalable fabrication of printed electronic devices. Metal diborides represent a family of layered non-van der Waals crystals with semimetallic properties for all nanosheet thicknesses. While previous reports show that the exfoliated nanomaterial is prone to oxidation, we demonstrate a readily accessible inert exfoliation process to produce quasi-2D nanoplatelets with intrinsic material properties. For this purpose, we demonstrate the exfoliation of three representative metal diborides (MgB2, CrB2, and ZrB2) under inert conditions. Nanomaterial is characterized using a combination of transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, IR, and UV-vis measurements, with only minimal oxidation indicated postprocessing. By depositing the pristine metal diboride nanoplatelets as thin films using a Langmuir-type deposition technique, the ohmic behavior of the networks is validated. Furthermore, the material decomposition is studied by using a combination of electrical and optical measurements after controlled exposure to ambient conditions. Finally, we report an efficient, low-cost approach for sample encapsulation to protect the nanomaterials from oxidation. This is used to demonstrate low-gauge factor strain sensors, confirming metal diboride nanosheets as a suitable alternative to graphene for electrode materials in printed electronics.
