1,2-Diaryl(3-pyridyl)ethanone oximes. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding networks revealed by X-ray diffraction.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of a set of 1-aryl-2-aryl(3-pyridyl)ethanones 1-5 and the corresponding ketoximes 6-9 is reported. Structural studies of oximes 6, 7 and 9 were performed in solution using (1)H-NMR and in the solid state by X-ray crystallography, providing evidence of H-bonding networks. The crystal packing was controlled by homomeric intermolecular oxime...oxime H-bond interactions for 6 and cooperative oxime...N(pyridyl) and CH/pi interactions for 7 and 9.

Pyridyl CO2 Fixation Enabled by a Secondary Hydrogen Bonding Coordination Sphere.

Project description:Reversible CO2 binders under ambient conditions are of significant interest for multiple applications in sensing and capture technologies. In this paper, a general systematic way to evaluate CO2 receptors with ?-systems is put forward. A series of receptors (five pyridine-based and one triazine-based) are evaluated as CO2 binders in terms of number of hydrogen bonding sites, strength of hydrogen bond donors, and number of nucleophilic sites. The binding of CO2 to the receptors was probed by computational models, absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and 1H NMR studies. Multiple solvents with varying ionic strength additives are probed to analyze the effects on CO2-bound intermediates. The receptors were screened progressively down-selecting through the different analytical techniques arriving at a promising pyridine receptor, which shows evidence of CO2 binding with each of the analytical techniques. The diaminopyridine motif demonstrates reversible CO2 binding and has convenient substitution sites for derivatization to incorporate into functional sensor systems.

Spectroscopic, X-ray Diffraction and Density Functional Theory Study of Intra- and Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonds in Ortho-(4-tolylsulfonamido)benzamides.

Project description:The conformations of the title compounds were determined in solution (NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy) and in the solid state (FT-IR and XRD), complemented with density functional theory (DFT) in the gas phase. The nonequivalence of the amide protons of these compounds due to the hindered rotation of the C(O)-NH2 single bond resulted in two distinct resonances of different chemical shift values in the aromatic region of their 1H-NMR spectra. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the carbonyl oxygen and the sulfonamide hydrogen atom were observed in the solution phase and solid state. XRD confirmed the ability of the amide moiety of this class of compounds to function as a hydrogen bond acceptor to form a six-membered hydrogen bonded ring and a donor simultaneously to form intermolecular hydrogen bonded complexes of the type N-H···O=S. The distorted tetrahedral geometry of the sulfur atom resulted in a deviation of the sulfonamide moiety from co-planarity of the anthranilamide scaffold, and this geometry enabled oxygen atoms to form hydrogen bonds in higher dimensions.

Control of Assembly of Dihydropyridyl and Pyridyl Molecules via Directed Hydrogen Bonding.

Project description:The crystallization of two dihydropyridyl molecules, 1,4-bis(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)dihydropyridyl)benzene ([C40H24N10]·2DMF, 1·2DMF; DMF = dimethylformamide) and 1,4-bis(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)dihydropyridyl)phenylbenzene ([C46H28N10]·2DMF, 3·2DMF), and their respective oxidized pyridyl analogues, 1,4-bis(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)pyridyl)benzene ([C40H20N10], 2) and 1,4-bis(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)pyridyl)phenylbenzene ([C46H24N10]·DMF, 4·DMF), has been achieved under solvothermal conditions. The dihydropyridyl molecules are converted to their pyridyl products via in situ oxidative dehydrogenation in solution. The structures of the four molecules have been fully characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. The oxidized pyridyl products, 2 and 4, are more elongated due to aromatization of the dihydropyridyl rings at each end of their parent molecules 1 and 3, respectively. The solid-state supramolecular structures of the pyridyl molecules are distinct from the dihydropyridyl molecules in terms of their hierarchical assembly via hydrogen bonding due to the loss of primary N-H hydrogen bond donors in the two electron oxidized tectons. Overall, the geometrically shorter molecules 1 and 3 display close-packed structures, whereas the more extended 2 and 4 assemble into more open supramolecular systems.

Probing Hydrogen-Bonding Properties of a Negatively Charged MoS2 Monolayer by Powder X-ray Diffraction and Density Functional Theory Calculations.

Project description:The contributions of various noncovalent interactions in stabilization of the assembled and delaminated MoS2-hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA)-layered compound resulted from the assembly of protonated HMTA molecules and negatively charged 1T-MoS2 monolayers have been considered on the basis of powder X-ray diffraction pattern modeling, density functional theory calculations, and atoms in molecules quantum theory analysis. The structure with HMTA cations involved in NH···S bonding with MoS2 layers was concluded to be more advantageous than the alternative one with NH···N bonding between the cations. Delamination was demonstrated to essentially influence the hierarchy of interactions and leads to significant strengthening of the NH···S hydrogen bond established between HMTA and the MoS2 monolayer surface. The method applied in this study for evaluation of the monolayer MoS2 properties on the basis of the 3D structure of the MoS2-organic compound is expected to be helpful to gain insights into the interactions occurring in many MoS2-based systems.

Supramolecular Organoplatinum(IV) Chemistry: Dimers and Polymers Formed by Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding.

Project description:The reaction of [PtMe2(6-dppd)], 1, where 6-dppd is a 1,4-bis(2-pyridyl)pyridazine derivative, with bromoalkanes BrCH2R, having a hydrogen-bond donor group R, gave the corresponding chiral products of trans oxidative addition [PtBrMe2(CH2R)(6-dppd)], 2a, R = CO2H; 3, R = 4-C6H4CO2H; 4, R = 4-C6H4CH2CO2H; 7, R = 2-C6H4CH2OH; 8, R = 4-C6H4B(OH)2; 9, R = 3-C6H4B(OH)2; and 10, R = 2-C6H4B(OH)2. Complex 2a was formed in equilibrium with two isomers formed by cis oxidative addition, while the reaction of 1 with BrCH2CH2CO2H gave mostly [PtBrMe(6-dppd)], 6. The supramolecular chemistry was studied by structure determination of six of the platinum(IV) complexes, with emphasis on the preference of the hydrogen bond acceptor (O, pyridyl N, or Br atom), formation of monomer, dimer, or polymer, and self-recognition or self-discrimination in self-assembly. Complex 7 formed a monomer with the OH···N hydrogen bond, and complexes 2a and 10 formed racemic dimers by complementary hydrogen bonding with self-discrimination between CO2H or B(OH)2 groups, respectively. Complexes 3, 4, and 9 formed polymers by intermolecular hydrogen bonding with self-recognition, with 4 containing OH···N and 3 and 9 containing OH···Br hydrogen bonds. It is concluded that there is no clear preference for the hydrogen bond acceptor group, and that the observed product depends also on the orientation of the hydrogen bond donor group.

Hydrogen-Bonding Motifs in Adducts of Allylamine with the 10 Simplest <i>n</i>-Alcohols: Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction Studies and Computational Analysis.

Project description:In this paper, we analyzed the homologous series of 10 allylamine adducts with n-alcohols from methanol to decanol. These are the first adduct structures containing aliphatic n-alcohols and an aliphatic amine as co-formers. While all of the ingredients are liquids under ambient conditions, the phases were synthesized with the use of the in situ crystallization technique assisted by IR laser-focused radiation at atmospheric pressure. The structures were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All of the phases contain the amine and alcohol in a 1:1 ratio. The architecture of the structures, based on hydrogen-bonding interactions between NH2 and OH moieties, depends on the size of the alcohol and changes in a systematic way. The three smallest alcohol adducts contain centrosymmetric layers of molecules of the L4(4)8(8) type. The next four alcohol adducts have the T4(2) topology. The structures with the biggest alcohols contain non-centrosymmetric L6(6) layers. The structural investigations were supported by periodic DFT calculations at the B3LYP/pobTZVP level. The cohesive and adhesive energies made up of layer (E lbe) and ribbon (E rbe) binding energies were used to predict which type of architecture can be formed. The thermal stabilities of the adducts correlate with the melting points of the co-forming alcohols, with no evident relation to the adduct architecture.

Strong hydrogen bonding in a dense hydrous magnesium silicate discovered by neutron Laue diffraction.

Project description:A large amount of hydrogen circulates inside the Earth, which affects the long-term evolution of the planet. The majority of this hydrogen is stored in deep Earth within the crystal structures of dense minerals that are thermodynamically stable at high pressures and temperatures. To understand the reason for their stability under such extreme conditions, the chemical bonding geometry and cation exchange mechanism for including hydrogen were analyzed in a representative structure of such minerals (i.e. phase E of dense hydrous magnesium silicate) by using time-of-flight single-crystal neutron Laue diffraction. Phase E has a layered structure belonging to the space group R 3 m and a very large hydrogen capacity (up to 18% H2O weight fraction). It is stable at pressures of 13-18?GPa and temperatures of up to at least 1573?K. Deuterated high-quality crystals with the chemical formula Mg2.28Si1.32D2.15O6 were synthesized under the relevant high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The nuclear density distribution obtained by neutron diffraction indicated that the O-D dipoles were directed towards neighboring O2- ions to form strong interlayer hydrogen bonds. This bonding plays a crucial role in stabilizing hydrogen within the mineral structure under such high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. It is considered that cation exchange occurs among Mg2+, D+ and Si4+ within this structure, making the hydrogen capacity flexible.

Mapping intermolecular bonding in C??.

Project description:The formation of intermolecular bonds in C?? has been investigated in detail at pressures below 2.2?GPa and up to 750?K. Fullerene samples were heated in a temperature gradient to obtain data on the formation of dimers and low-dimensional polymers along isobars. Intermolecular bonding was analyzed ex situ by Raman scattering, using both intramolecular modes and intermolecular stretching modes. Semi-quantitative reaction maps are given for the formation of dimers and chains. The activation energy for dimer formation decreases by 0.2?meV pm(-1) when intermolecular distances decrease and dimer formation is noticeably affected by the rotational state of molecules. Above 400-450?K larger oligomers are formed; below 1.4?GPa most of these are disordered, with small domains of linear chains, but above this the appearance of stretching modes indicates the existence of ordered one-dimensional polymers. At the highest pressures and temperatures two-dimensional polymers are also observed.

Weakening the Interchain Interactions in One Dimensional Cobalt(II) Coordination Polymers by Preventing Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding.

Project description:The reaction of Co(NCS)2 with N-methylaniline leads to the formation of [Co(NCS)2(N-methylaniline)2]n (1), in which the cobalt(II) cations are octahedrally coordinated and linked into linear chains by pairs of thiocyanate anions. In contrast to [Co(NCS)2(aniline)2]n (2) reported recently, in which the Co(NCS)2 chains are linked by strong interchain N-H···S hydrogen bonding, such interactions are absent in 1. Computational studies reveal that the cobalt(II) ions in compound 1 show an easy-axis anisotropy that is lower than in 2, but with the direction of the easy axis being similar in both compounds. The high magnetic anisotropy is also confirmed by magnetic and FD-FT THz-EPR spectroscopy, which yield a consistent gz value. These investigations prove that the intrachain interactions in 1 are slightly higher than in 2. Magnetic measurements reveal that the critical temperature for magnetic ordering in 1 is significantly lower than in 2, which indicates that the elimination of the hydrogen bonds leads to a weakening of the interchain interactions. This is finally proven by FD-FT THz-EPR experiments, which show that the interchain interaction energy in the N-methylaniline compound 1 is nine-fold smaller than in the aniline compound 2.
