Optimization of roadway layout in ultra-close coal seams: A case study.

ABSTRACT: Most coal mines in China are currently mining close coal seams. Roadways in close coal seams, especially ultra-close coal seams, confronted difficulties in maintaining, including large deformation of the roadway, roof caving, rib spalling and floor heaving. This is mainly caused by the complicated stress and geological conditions, shattered roof, improper layout and support. To explore the issues mentioned above, the theoretical analysis was used to build a mechanical model and study the stress distribution under coal pillars, and FLAC3D modelling was adopted to build numerical models with different staggered distances. The optimal roadway layout was brought forward combining the result of numerical simulation and coal recovery rate. The field practice was carried out in the tailgate of panel 25301 to investigate the effect of the layout scheme. The results of field monitoring show that the roadway's stability is well maintained in the mining process.

Supporting optimization of thick seam roadway with top coal based on orthogonal matrix analysis.

Project description:Aiming at the problem of large deformation and difficulty in surrounding rock control of the top coal roadway in thick seam, theoretical analysis, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, orthogonal matrix analysis and other methods were used to study the roof deformation and support parameter optimization of the top coal roadway in thick seam. Firstly, the structural model and roof mechanical model of the top coal roadway in thick seam were established, and the deformation coefficient TK was defined based on the relationship between curvature radius and bending moment, maximum bending moment and ultimate tensile strength of beam. According to the ratio of deformation rate between TK and beam to determine the roof deformation mode of top coal roadway, the discriminant conditions of roadway roof stability under two deformation conditions are obtained. Due to the characteristics of serious coal-rock fragmentation, large roof deformation, and integration of top coal and side coal. Therefore, the combined support method of "high prestressed long and short anchor cables" is proposed by double arch bearing structure control technology. Finally, based on the orthogonal matrix analysis method of supporting parameters optimization of the top coal roadway in thick seam, the analysis amount of supporting scheme is significantly reduced, the comprehensive evaluation of multi-factor and multi-supporting effect of roadway support is realized, and the optimal supporting scheme is obtained. Compared with the surrounding rock of the roadway without support, the deformation of the roof is reduced by 27.27%, the deformation of the two sides is reduced by 45.24%, and the tensile failure volume is reduced by 54.66%. The top coal roadway in thick seam has been effectively controlled, which provides guarantee for high yield and high efficiency of the mine.

Quantitative analysis of ultra-close fault dynamic rupture and seismic risks in deep roadway excavation.

Project description:This study presents a comprehensive numerical analysis of dynamic rupture and fault-induced seismic risks in deep roadway excavation environments, focusing on near-fault conditions. A quantitative assessment was conducted for faults within 5 m of the roadway, a critical range for evaluating heightened seismic risks. Our results demonstrate that within this proximity, fault slip and seismic moment increase significantly, with peak fault slip reaching 17.1 mm and seismic moment exceeding 3.9 × 1010 Nm. One of the key findings is the amplification effect of wave reflections along the exposed roadway surfaces, particularly in areas near the roof and sidewall. The peak particle velocity (PPV) on the roof reached 0.40 m/s, while the right sidewall recorded 0.49 m/s, highlighting elevated seismic impacts in these critical regions. The study also validated the linear slip weakening model, confirming its effectiveness in capturing the transition from static to dynamic friction during rupture and providing theoretical grounding for observed fault behavior. This research contributes novel insights into the fault-induced dynamic rupture process, particularly in ultra-close fault conditions, and emphasizes the need to account for fault proximity, frictional properties, and wave reflection in seismic hazard assessments. Our findings offer a foundation for improving seismic-resistant design in deep excavation operations, particularly in faulted geological settings.

Transient electromagnetic characteristics of coal seams intruded by magmatic rocks.

Project description:The intrusion of magmatic rocks into coal seams affects the coal quality and leads to unforeseen hazards in safety of the coal mines' production. This paper summarizes the mechanism of magmatic rocks intruding into coal seams, depicts the electromagnetic characteristics of the coal seams intruded by magmatic rocks, briefly describes the characteristics of transient electromagnetic method (TEM), and introduces the method of detection by TEM and the data processing steps. Then, the effectiveness of TEM in detecting the ranges of the coal seams intruded by magmatic rocks is theoretically analysed. It is observed that after the intrusion of magmatic rocks in the coal seams, the electromagnetic characteristics (secondary field potential and resistivity) will be dramatically affected, namely high secondary field potential and low resistivity. For experimental verification purposes, this study selects the test project of the Tongxin Minefield in the Datong Coalfield in Shanxi, China as an example, and the accuracy for the detection of the ranges of the coal seams intruded by magmatic rock using TEM is successfully verified.

Prediction of Fractures in Coal Seams with Multi-component Seismic Data.

Project description:Fractures that develop in coal seams threaten safety in many ways, but they can be predicted using fracture parameters derived from seismic data. However, the post-stack split shear waves are difficult to thoroughly separate by Alford rotation due to wavefield mixing. We propose a method of predicting fractures in a coal seam using multi-component seismic data, which was applied to coal seam 13-1 of the Huainan coalfield, China. We employed the Alford rotation to separate the split PS-waves (P-to-S converted waves) and perform interlayer travel-time inversion of the fast shear waves using geophysical logs, rock-physics parameters, and tunnel-excavation information as constraints. However, post-stack wavefield mixing of the coal seam interfered with the Alford rotation of the real post-stack seismic data. Therefore, we only performed the Alford rotation on radial and transverse component post-stack sections to derive fracture azimuths, which were then applied to the pre-stack separation of the split PS-waves. Using joint PP- and PS-wave inversion, anisotropy parameters were derived for use in fracture prediction. Finally, we predicted unsafe mining areas with a high probability of coal and gas outbursts. The application results were verified by excavation data from the mine tunnels. Our method contributes to fracture prediction on coal mine safety.

Study of the influencing factors of the liquid CO2 phase change fracturing effect in coal seams.

Project description:To study the influence of different factors on the cracking effect of the liquid CO2 phase transition, the mechanics of coal rock crack extension based on liquid CO2 phase change blast loading were studied. Through the application of simulation software to analyze the influence of coal seam physical parameters (in situ stress, gas pressure, modulus of elasticity and strength of coal) and blasting parameters (fracturing pore size and peak pressure of detonation)on the effect of liquid CO2 phase change cracking, the simulation results showed that the cracking effect of liquid CO2 phase change was positively correlated with the changes in gas pressure, elastic modulus, fracture hole diameter and peak vent pressure, negatively correlated with the variation in situ stress and compressive strength, and nearly independent of the tensile strength. In addition, by using Gray correlation analysis to analyze the influence degree of six main factors on the cracking effect, the calculation results showed that the effect of blasting parameters was greater than that of physical parameters. The main controlling factor that affected the blasting effect was the peak pressure of blasting release. By conducting comparative engineering trials with different blasting parameters, the test results showed that the crack effect of the coal seam was positively correlated with the change in fracture hole diameter and peak venting pressure, which was consistent with the results obtained from the simulation. The experimental results and simulation results for the effective radius of coal seam fracturing were basically consistent, with the error between the two types of results falling below 10%. Therefore, the reliability of the blasting numerical model was verified. In summary, the research results provide theoretical guidance for applying and promoting liquid CO2 fracturing technology in coal mines.

Improved Formation of Biomethane by Enriched Microorganisms from Different Rank Coal Seams.

Project description:The influence of enrichment of culturable microorganisms in in situ coal seams on biomethane production potential of other coal seams has been rarely studied. In this study, we enriched culturable microorganisms from three in situ coal seams with three coal ranks and conducted indoor anaerobic biomethane production experiments. Microbial community composition, gene functions, and metabolites in different culture units by 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing combined with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-time-of-flight (LC-MS-TOF). The results showed that biomethane production in the bituminous coal group (BC)cc resulted in the highest methane yield of 243.3 μmol/g, which was 12.3 times higher than that in the control group (CK). Meanwhile, Methanosarcina was the dominant archaeal genus in the three experimental groups (37.42 ± 11.16-52.62 ± 2.10%), while its share in the CK was only 2.91 ± 0.48%. Based on the functional annotation, the relative abundance of functional genes in the three experimental groups was mainly related to the metabolism of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds such as purines and pyrimidines. Metabolite analysis showed that enriched microorganisms promoted the degradation of a total of 778 organic substances in bituminous coal, including 55 significantly different metabolites (e.g., purines and pyrimidines). Based on genomic and metabolomic analyses, this paper reconstructed the heterocyclic compounds degradation coupled methane metabolism pathway and thereby preliminarily elucidated that enriched culturable bacteria from different coal-rank seams could promote the degradation of bituminous coal and intensify biogenic methane yields.

Exploring multiple electrical layers overlying coal seams using the transient electromagnetic method.

Project description:The transient electromagnetic method (TEM) is widely applied in coal hydrogeological exploration owing to its sensitivity to low-resistivity bodies. However, when a coal seam is buried deep, particularly if there are multiple electrical layers in the vertical direction of the overlying stratum, the results of the calculation using the late-channel empirical formula of the TEM may no longer reflect the actual situation. In this study, we evaluated the principle of the one-dimensional (1D) Occam algorithm and the steps for performing an inversion. We proposed various two-, three-, and four-layer electrical models for inversion using the 1D Occam algorithm. Our results are consistent with the electrical distribution of the models, thus indicating the effectiveness of the algorithm. A test project of large-depth transient electromagnetic exploration in the Datong Coalfield in Shanxi, China, was selected for experimental verification. The 1D Occam inversion was used to successfully identify various electrical strata overlying the coal seam.

Succession Patterns and Physical Niche Partitioning in Microbial Communities from Subsurface Coal Seams.

Project description:The subsurface represents a largely unexplored frontier in microbiology. Here, coal seams present something of an oasis for microbial life, providing moisture, warmth, and abundant fossilized organic material. Microbes in coal seams are thought to syntrophically mobilize fossilized carbon from the geosphere to the biosphere. Despite the environmental and economic importance of this process, little is known about the microbial ecology of coal seams. In the current study, ecological succession and spatial niche partitioning are explored in three coal seam microbial communities. Scanning electron microscopic visualization and 16S rRNA sequencing track changes in microbial communities over time, revealing distinct attached and planktonic communities displaying patterns of ecological succession. Attachment to the coal surface is biofilm mediated on Surat coal, whereas microbes on Sydney and Gunnedah coal show different attachment processes. This study demonstrates that coal seam microbial communities undergo spatial niche partitioning during periods of succession as microbes colonize coal environments.

Global optimization of cerebral cortex layout.

Project description:Functional areas of mammalian cerebral cortex seem positioned to minimize costs of their interconnections, down to a best-in-a-billion optimality level. The optimization problem here, originating in microcircuit design, is: Given connections among components, what is the physical placement of the components on a surface that minimizes total length of connections? Because of unfeasibility of measuring long-range "wire length" in the cortex, a simpler adjacency cost was validated. To deal with incomplete information on brain networks, a size law was developed that predicts optimization patterns in subnetworks. Macaque and cat cortex rank better in this connection optimization than the wiring of comparably structured computer chips, but somewhat worse than the macroeconomic commodity-flow network among U.S. states. However, cortex wiring conforms to the size law better than the macroeconomic patterns, which may indicate cortex optimizing mechanisms involve more global processes.

Curve forming prediction of coal mine roadway based on RBF interpolation.

Project description:Underground roadway excavation is a complex process, especially roadway curved excavation. In addition, the rationality of the design of coal mine roadway excavation scheme directly affects the speed of roadway excavation. The more reasonable the scheme design, the more conducive to rapid excavation. In order to avoid the influence of invalid construction on the efficiency of roadway excavation, this paper studies the forming of roadway bend. Based on the analysis of the tunneling process of the roadway curve, the mathematical model of the roadway curve is established. Taking the turning radius of the roadway curve as the evaluation index, the influence of various factors on the roadway curve excavation is analyzed. The research shows that the radius of the roadway curve increases with the increase of the feed rate, the working space position of the roadheader and the required width of the roadway, and decreases with the increase of the working space angle. Then, combined with the advantages of KNN algorithm, an interpolation model for calculating the radius of the curve is established based on RBF algorithm, and the radius of the tunnel curve is reconstructed and predicted. It provides a basis for the rational design of the construction process of the roadway bend and a reliable numerical algorithm for the design of the radius of the roadway bend. It also provides a theoretical basis for improving the efficiency of high roadway excavation in coal mines.
