EEG electrode digitization with commercial virtual reality hardware.

ABSTRACT: Accurate spatial co-registration of EEG electrode positions with individual head models is an important component for EEG source localization and imaging. Due to variations in head shape between individuals, this requires measurements of electrode locations in each individual. Existing hardware for digitization can be accurate, but also relatively expensive. With the goal of making digitization more accessible for a range of research laboratories, we have developed an open-source software tool that can make use of less expensive consumer virtual reality hardware for EEG electrode digitization. Here we describe our developed VRDigitizer system and compare it to existing digitization solutions. Experimental evaluations were performed in a phantom head model and in 12 human subjects. In our comparison experiments, VRDigitizer was able to measure electrode positions with a mean error of 3.74 mm, compared to 1.73 mm and 2.98 mm for the commercial systems tested.

Project description:Feedback outcomes are generally classified into positive and negative feedback. People often predict a feedback outcome with information that is based on both objective facts and uncertain subjective information, such as a mood. For example, if an action leads to good results consecutively, people performing the action overestimate the behavioral result of the next action. In electroencephalogram measurements, negative feedback evokes negative potential, called feedback negativity, and positive feedback evokes positive potential, called reward positivity. The present study investigated the relationship between the degree of the mood caused by the feedback outcome and the error-related brain potentials. We measured the electroencephalogram activity while the participants played a virtual reality shooting game. The experimental task was to shoot down a cannonball flying toward the player using a handgun. The task difficulty was determined from the size and curve of the flying cannonball. These gaming parameters affected the outcome probability of shooting the target in the game. We also implemented configurations in the game, such as the player's life points and play times. These configurations affected the outcome magnitude of shooting the target in the game. Moreover, we used the temporal accuracy of shooting in the game as the parameter of the mood. We investigated the relationship between these experimental features and the event-related potentials using the single-trial-based linear mixed-effects model analysis. The feedback negativity was observed at an error trial, and its amplitude was modulated with the outcome probability and the mood. Conversely, reward positivity was observed at hit trials, but its amplitude was modulated with the outcome probability and outcome magnitude. This result suggests that feedback negativity is enhanced according to not only the feedback probability but also the mood that was changed depending on the temporal gaming outcome.

Project description:In some patients with medically refractory epilepsy, EEG with intracerebrally placed electrodes (stereo-electroencephalography, SEEG) is needed to locate the seizure onset zone (SOZ) for successful epilepsy surgery. SEEG has limitations and entails risk of complications because of its invasive character. Non-invasive magnetoencephalography virtual electrodes (MEG-VEs) may overcome SEEG limitations and optimize electrode placement making SOZ localization safer. Our purpose was to assess whether interictal activity measured by MEG-VEs and SEEG at identical anatomical locations were comparable, and whether MEG-VEs activity properties could determine the location of a later resected brain area (RA) as an approximation of the SOZ. We analyzed data from nine patients who underwent MEG and SEEG evaluation, and surgery for medically refractory epilepsy. MEG activity was retrospectively reconstructed using beamforming to obtain VEs at the anatomical locations corresponding to those of SEEG electrodes. Spectral, functional connectivity and functional network properties were obtained for both, MEG-VEs and SEEG time series, and their correlation and reliability were established. Based on these properties, the approximation of the SOZ was characterized by the differences between RA and non-RA (NRA). We found significant positive correlation and reliability between MEG-VEs and SEEG spectral measures (particularly in delta [0.5-4?Hz], alpha2 [10-13?Hz], and beta [13-30?Hz] bands) and broadband functional connectivity. Both modalities showed significantly slower activity and a tendency towards increased broadband functional connectivity in the RA compared to the NRA. Our findings show that spectral and functional connectivity properties of non-invasively obtained MEG-VEs match those of invasive SEEG recordings, and can characterize the SOZ. This suggests that MEG-VEs might be used for optimal SEEG planning and fewer depth electrode implantations, making the localization of the SOZ safer and more successful.
