A <i>Rhodobacterales</i> bacterium, <i>Sulfitobacter</i> sp. strain D7, was isolated from an Emiliania huxleyi bloom in the North Atlantic and has been shown to act as a pathogen and induce cell death of E. huxleyi during lab coculturing.
