Leachate generation is a major problem for municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills and causes significant threat to surface and groundwater. Samples were collected from the landfills of Iranian metropolises (Ahwaz, Mashhad, Tehran (before and after treatment plant), Isfahan, Tabriz, Hamedan, Rasht, Sanandaj and Qazvin) based on the standard sampling methods and transferred to the laboratory. Project description:Phosphorus is an essential constituent of all living organisms but it is non-renewable and its natural reserves are fast depleting. Phosphorus discharged in wastewater could be sustainably reused by microalgae. Knowledge about cellular phosphorus dynamics in microalgae has been rapidly advancing and luxury phosphorus (poly-P) uptake phenomenon by microalgae is becoming the focus point for many research studies. Ultra-membrane treated landfill leachate was used as a nutrient medium for the growth of indigenous microalgal species with simultaneous removal of phosphorus (P-PO4 -3) and nitrogen (N-NH4 + and N-NO3). Different concentrations of phosphorus (15-100?mg. L-1 P-PO4 -3) was added to leachate. Highest nitrogen removal (69.03% N-NH4 +) was observed for 100?mg. L-1 P-PO4 -3 supplemented medium. P removal efficiency was 100% for all the tested P-PO4 -3 concentrations. Intracellular poly-P was detected by florescence microscopy. Microalgae can be grown and utilized for the sustainable recovery of P and N from landfill leachate.

Project description:Landfill leachate water is often treated in a biological processing step. In most cases a stable operation of the industrial scale plants is controlled by sum parameters such as process relevant ion concentrations, dry matter concentration and dissolved oxygen concentration. A deeper understanding of the current status of the individual cell or the biocoenosis would help to understand malfunctions or the reason for inefficient plant performance. In a simple batch experimental setup, samples of two different conditions have been generated to unravel bacterial proteome changes in response to medium term lack of oxygen supply and landfill leachate addition. The first condition was an activated sludge sample condition from an industrial scale landfill leachate treatment plant with the process stages of nitrification and denitrification. After 45 days without aeration and with addition of leachate and carbon sources as fed batch, the second sample (condition 2) was taken. A comprehensive LC-MS/MS based protemic screen was performed aiming for the identification and quantification of waste water specific bacteria proteomes. To this end, a novel combination of two protein extraction methods has been established meeting the requirements for LC-MS/MS anaylsis. Around 600 proteins were identified of which 90 % were quantified in at least 3 replicates. Numerous essential proteins to maintain the cell redox homeostasis are overexpressed in the condition 1 which was aerated with oxygen and stressed by the ultrafiltration compared to condition 2, which was not aerated in a lab experiment. In addition, heat and cold shock proteins and two proteins related to the apoptosis of organisms (spermidine/putrescine transport system and apoptosis-inducing factor) were identified.

Project description:Komurcuoda leachate treatment plant, Istanbul, which consists of membrane bioreactor (MBR) and nanofiltration (NF) system, faced rapid flux decline in membranes after 3-year successful operation. To compensate rapid flux decline in membranes, the fouled membranes were renewed but replacement of the membranes did not solve the problem. To find the reasons and make a comprehensive analysis, membrane autopsy was performed. Visual and physical inspection of the modules and some instrumental analysis were conducted for membrane autopsy. Membranes were found severely fouled with organic and inorganic foulants. Main foulant was iron which was deposited on surface. The main reason was found to be the changing of aerator type of MBR. When surface aerators were exchanged with bottom diffusers which led to increasing of dissolved oxygen (DO) level of the basin, iron particles were oxidized and they converted into particulate insoluble form. It was thought that probably this insoluble form of the iron particles was the main cause of decreased membrane performance. After the diagnosis, a new pretreatment alternative including a new iron antiscalant was suggested and system performance has been recovered.

Project description:In this study, batch and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using persulfate oxidation to treat groundwater contaminated by landfill leachate (CGW). In batch experiments, persulfate was compared with H2O2, and permanganate for oxidation of organic compounds in CGW. It was also compared with the potential of biodegradation for contaminant removal from CGW. Persulfate was observed to be superior to H2O2 and permanganate for degradation of total organic carbon (TOC) in the CGW. Conversely, biodegradation caused only partial removal of TOC in CGW. In contrast, persulfate caused complete degradation of the TOC in the CGW or aged CGW, showing no selectivity limitation to the contaminants. Magnetite (Fe3O4) enhanced degradation of leachate compounds in both CGW and aged CGW with limited increase in persulfate consumption and sulfate production. Under dynamic flow condition in 1-D column experiments, both biodegradation and persulfate oxidation of TOC were enhanced by Fe3O4. The enhancement, however, was significantly greater for persulfate oxidation. In both batch and column experiments, Fe3O4 by itself caused minimal consumption of persulfate and production of sulfate, indicating that magnetite is a good persulfate activator for treating CGW in heterogeneous systems The results of the study show that the persulfate-based in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) method has great potential to treat the groundwater contaminated by landfill leachate.

Project description:Eukaryotes may influence pollutant degradation processes in groundwater ecosystems by activities such as predation on bacteria and recycling of nutrients. Culture-independent community profiling and phylogenetic analysis of 18S rRNA gene fragments, as well as culturing, were employed to obtain insight into the sediment-associated eukaryotic community composition in an anaerobic sandy aquifer polluted with landfill leachate (Banisveld, The Netherlands). The microeukaryotic community at a depth of 1 to 5 m below the surface along a transect downgradient (21 to 68 m) from the landfill and at a clean reference location was diverse. Fungal sequences dominated most clone libraries. The fungal diversity was high, and most sequences were sequences of yeasts of the Basidiomycota. Sequences of green algae (Chlorophyta) were detected in parts of the aquifer close (<30 m) to the landfill. The bacterium-predating nanoflagellate Heteromita globosa (Cercozoa) was retrieved in enrichments, and its sequences dominated the clone library derived from the polluted aquifer at a depth of 5 m at a location 21 m downgradient from the landfill. The number of culturable eukaryotes ranged from 10(2) to 10(3) cells/g sediment. Culture-independent quantification revealed slightly higher numbers. Groundwater mesofauna was not detected. We concluded that the food chain in this polluted aquifer is short and consists of prokaryotes and fungi as decomposers of organic matter and protists as primary consumers of the prokaryotes.

Project description:Although landfilling is still the most suitable method for solid waste disposal, generation of large quantity of leachate is still considered as one of the main environmental problem. Efficient treatment of leachate is required prior to final discharge. Persulfate (S2O82-) recently used for leachate oxidation, the oxidation potential of persulfate can be improved by activate and initiate sulfate radical. The current data aimed to evaluate the performance of utilizing Al2SO4 reagent for activation of persulfate to treat landfill leachate. The data on chemical oxygen demand (COD), color, and NH3-H removals at different setting of the persulfate, Al2SO4 dosages, pH, and reaction time were collected using a central composite design (CCD) were measured to identify the optimum operating conditions. A total of 30 experiments were performed, the optimum conditions for S2O82-/Al2SO4 oxidation process was obtained. Quadratic models for chemical oxygen demand (COD), color, and NH3-H removals were significant with p-value < 0.0001. The experimental results were in agreement with the optimum results for COD and NH3-N removal rates to be 67%, 81%, and 48%, respectively). The results obtained in leachate treatment were compared with those from other treatment processes, such as S2O82- only and Al2SO4 only, to evaluate its effectiveness. The combined method (i.e., /S2O82-/Al2SO4) showed higher removal efficiency for COD, color, and NH3-N compared with other studied applications.

Project description:This work aimed at studying the photochemical treatment of a landfill leachate using ultraviolet light, hydrogen peroxide, and ferrous or ferric ions, in a batch recycle photoreactor. The effect of inorganic carbon presence, pH, initial H2O2 amount (0-9990 mg L-1) as well as Fe(II) (200-600 ppm) and Fe(III) (300-700 ppm) concentrations on the total carbon removal and color change was studied. Prior to the photochemical treatment, a pretreatment process was applied; inorganic nitrogen and inorganic carbon were removed by means of air stripping and initial pH regulation, respectively. The leachate sent subsequently for photochemical treatment was free of inorganic carbon and contained only organic carbon with concentration 1200±100 mg L-1 at pH 5.1-5.3. The most favorable concentrations of H2O2 and ferric ions for carbon removal were 6660 mg L-1 and 400 ppm, respectively. Adjusting the initial pH value in the range of 2.2-5.3 had a significant effect on the organic carbon removal. The photo-Fenton-like process was more advantageous than the photo-Fenton one for leachate treatment. By applying the most favorable operating conditions, 88.7% removal of total organic carbon, 100% removal of total inorganic carbon, 96.5% removal of total nitrogen, and 98.2% color removal were achieved.

Project description:Sorptive landfill liners can prevent the migration of the leachate pollutants. However, their sorption ability will decrease over time. A method should be developed to maintain the sorption ability of landfill liners. In this study, we combined cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-bentonite (CTMAB-bentonite) and zero-valent iron (ZVI) to develop a self-cleaning liner that can retain its sorption ability for a long period. Batch experiments and calculation simulations were employed to analyse the sorption ability of this liner material and the ecological risk of halogenated hydrocarbons. The results showed that CTMAB-bentonite could sorb halogenated hydrocarbons well, with saturated sorption capacities (Q m) of 10.2, 14.5, 6.69, 18.5, 29.4, and 49.7 mg·g-1 for dichloroethane (DCA), trichloroethane (TCA), dichloroethene (DCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), and 1,3- dichloropropene (1,3-DCP), respectively. Using the mixture of 0.5 g iron and 0.5 g CTMAB-bentonite could dramatically increase the removal efficiency of DCE, TCE, and PCE. The reaction with ZVI did not change the structure of CTMAB-bentonite and its sorption ability remained consistent. Calculation results suggested that the self-cleaning landfill liner would dramatically decrease the hazard index (HI) of the eluate. However, the humic acid and salt in leachate would cause a reduction in the removal of halogenated hydrocarbons.

Project description:Leachate migration from open landfills is an environmental concern of developing cities. This study investigated the base soil-profile pedo-physical and chemical properties of the South African Sepane soil form or referred to as Cutanic Luvisol at the Bloemfontein southern landfill under the Mangaung municipality in the Free State Province. Six soil-profiles pedo-physical, exchangeable-cations and heavy metals concentrations were characterized from in-situ, core and loose soil-samples. The DTPA Test from a 5g air-dried soil extracted heavy metals. The soil profile was characterized by a layered Orthic-A, pedocutanic B- and C-horizons with lower horizons containing mean-total clay of 72%, bulk-density (?1.5 gcm-3) and saturated hydraulic-conductivity (Ks < 6mmhr-1). Mean soil pH increased with depth from 6.4 to 6.8 along-side exchangeable-cations ranging from 19 to 2573 mgkg-1 in the order Ca > Mg > K > Na > S > P and Ca > Mg > Na > K > S > P for the respective A- and B-horizons. The Mg/K and (Ca + Mg)/K exceeded norm ratios. Soil-profile horizons had respective 44%, 34% and 22% heavy-metal distribution with mean content range of 0.001-37.3 mgkg-1 in the order Mn > Fe > Cr > Zn > Cu > As > Pb > Ni > Cd and Fe > Mn > Cr > Cu > As > Pb > Zn > Ni > Cd for the surface and subsurface horizons, respectively. Heavy-metal mean concentrations were below the norm except for Cr that was higher than 150% from upper horizons and posed serious risk to the near-surface environment. Soil profiles heavy-metal content and pollution-index was unpolluted (0.3-0.4), decreased with depth and reflected no subsurface pollution concerns. This study findings highlighted low internal-migration potential of clay soils and the need for understanding the sources and mode of migration of Cr at the landfill alongside continued monitoring.

Project description:Leachate collection system (LCS) clogging is a common operational problem in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in China, which can result in high leachate levels that threaten the safety of landfill operations and subsequently increase the leachate leakage risk. In our previous research, a filtration test was conducted and the physical clogging effect was evaluated. To fully analyze the LCS failure, in this study, a set of column experiments were carried out to investigate the biochemical clogging development and mechanisms. Results showed that the biofilm and deposited CaCO3 composed the primary clogging materials. During the experimental period, the hydraulic conductivities in simulated gravel and nonwoven geotextile drainage layers were observed (91.7% and five orders of magnitude reduction), and decreased to 10-4 and 10-8 m s-1, respectively. Therefore, the significance of the geotextile layer in LCS designing needs to be reconsidered. The biochemical clogging was positively correlated with volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and Ca2+ loading and the Ca2+ played the dominant role. Meanwhile, an improved method for analyzing biochemical clogging development was proposed.
