Multifaceted strategy for the synthesis of diverse 2,2'-bithiophene derivatives.

ABSTRACT: New catalytically or high pressure activated reactions and routes, including coupling, double bond migration in allylic systems, and various types of cycloaddition and dihydroamination have been used for the synthesis of novel bithiophene derivatives. Thanks to the abovementioned reactions and routes combined with non-catalytic ones, new acetylene, butadiyne, isoxazole, 1,2,3-triazole, pyrrole, benzene, and fluoranthene derivatives with one, two or six bithiophenyl moieties have been obtained. Basic sources of crucial substrates which include bithiophene motif for catalytic reactions were 2,2'-bithiophene, gaseous acetylene and 1,3-butadiyne.

Project description:An efficient method for the synthesis of 2-(o-monofluoroalkenylaryl)quinazolinone derivatives was developed. In this context, the quinazolinone ring served as the inherent directing group, 2,2-difluorovinyl tosylate was used as the monofluoroolefin synthon, and Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H bond difluorovinylation of 2-arylquinazolinons was performed to give the corresponding monofluoroalkene-containing quinazolinons in yields of 65-92%. The method is characterized by broad synthetic utility, mild conditions, and high efficiency.

Design, synthesis, and performance evaluation of TiO<sub>2</sub>-dye sensitized solar cells using 2,2'-bithiophene-based co-sensitizers.

Project description:We report on the synthesis and characterization of six novel 2,2'-bithiophene-based organic compounds (3a-c and 5a-c) that are designed to serve as co-sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on TiO2. The compounds are linked to various donor and acceptor groups, and we confirm their chemical structures through spectral analyses. Our focus is on enhancing the performance of metal based N3, and the compounds were designed to operate at the nanoscale. We performed absorption and fluorescence emission measurements in dimethylformamide (DMF), where one of our compounds 5a exhibited the longest maximum absorption and maximum emission wavelengths, indicating the significant impact of the para methoxy group as a strong electron-donating group. Our dyes 5a + N3 (η = 7.42%) and 5c + N3 (η = 6.57%) outperformed N3 (η = 6.16%) alone, where the values of short current density (JSC) and open circuit voltage (VOC) for these two systems also improved. We also investigated the charge transfer resistance at the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which is important in the context of nanotechnology. According to the Nyquist plot, the 5a + N3 cocktail exhibited the lowest recombination rate, resulting in the highest VOC. Our theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) are also in agreement with the experimental process. These findings suggest that our compounds have great potential as efficient DSSC co-sensitizers. This study provides valuable insights into the design and synthesis of new organic compounds for use as co-sensitizers in DSSCs based on TiO2 and highlights the potential of these compounds for use in efficient solar energy conversion.

Electrochemical and optoelectronic properties of terthiophene- and bithiophene-based polybenzofulvene derivatives.

Project description:The electrochemical behavior of some polybenzofulvene derivatives bearing bithiophene (BT) or terthiophene (TT) side chains was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Very interestingly, the presence of unsubstituted terminal thiophene moieties allowed poly-6-BT-BF3k and poly-6-TT-BF3k to be cross-linked by electrochemical procedures. Conductive films were obtained by electrodeposition from solutions of these polymers onto electrode surfaces through the formation of covalent cross-linking due to dimerization (i.e. electrochemical oxidation) of the BT or TT side chains. The films showed electrochromic features and switched from yellow-orange (neutral) to green (positively charged) by switching the potential, and were stable to tenths of cycles, without degradation in the wet state in the electrolyte solution. Finally, the thin film obtained by electrodeposition of poly-6-TT-BF3k on a indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrate showed in the neutral state a significantly red-shifted photoluminescence (PL) emission (∼40 nm red-shifted with respect to that of the corresponding film obtained by casting procedures), which was consistent with the presence of more conjugated moieties produced by the oxidative dimerization of the TT side chains. The innovative architecture and the easy preparation could lead to a broad range of applications in optoelectronics and bioelectronics for these cross-linked hybrid materials based on π-stacked polybenzofulvene backbones bearing oligothiophene side chains.

A new strategy for the synthesis of β-benzylmercaptoethylamine derivatives.

Project description:Here we describe a new experimental approach to the synthesis of the β-benzylmercaptoethylamine functionality and illustrate its synthetic utility in multi-component reactions. Although prevalent in modern organic synthesis, no general methods have been described for this functionality. Using a carefully developed LiOH-water-ethanol reaction mixture we were able to produce a diverse collection of β-benzylmercaptoethylamines containing a range of sensitive functional groups in excellent yields. To further illustrate their utility in molecular library synthesis, we also report the use of β-benzylmercaptoethylamines in five different multi-component reactions.

Synthesis and characterization of cyclobutenedione-bithiophene π-conjugated polymers: acetal-protecting strategy for Kumada-Tamao-Corriu coupling polymerization between aryl bromide and Grignard reagents.

Project description:Cyclobutenedione is an aromatic ring that exhibits strong electron-withdrawing properties but is susceptible to undesired reactions with nucleophiles. Herein, Kumada-Tamao-Corriu coupling polymerization of a cyclobutenedione monomer whose carbonyl groups are protected as acetals was achieved. Hydrolysis of the acetals afforded donor-acceptor type π-conjugated polymers consisting of cyclobutenedione as an acceptor unit and bithiophene as a donor unit. The acetal-protected monomer was also subjected to Suzuki-Miyaura coupling polymerization. The absorption and emission spectra of the deprotected polymers shifted to the longer wavelength compared with the acetal-protected polymers.

Green electrochemical strategy for one-step synthesis of new catechol derivatives.

Project description:In this paper, we present promising results in the green electrochemical oxidation of catechol in the presence of three different thiol nucleophiles at the surface of a glassy carbon electrode in an aqueous solution using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The outcome indicated the synthesis of some new heterocyclic compounds functionalized with phenolic, triazole, triazine and pyrimidine groups. The effects of repetitive cycling, nucleophile concentrations and sweep rates were explored to get more information about the systems. The voltammetric data showed that the electro-generated o-benzoquinone is a quite reactive intermediate, which in aqueous solutions can quickly participate in a Michael-addition reaction with any one of the nucleophiles to form the corresponding products. The structures of all newly electro-synthesized compounds were confirmed by elemental analyses and FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C-NMR and MS spectra. The one-pot synthesis strategy led to new organics with high purities and good yields under green conditions without harmful reagents.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Photoluminescent Properties of 3,3',4,4'-Tetraethyl-5,5'-divinyl-2,2'-bipyrrole Derivatives.

Project description:Photoluminescent divinylbipyrroles were synthesized from 3,3',4,4'-tetraetyl-2,2'-bipyrrole-5,5'-dicarboxaldehyde and activated methylene compounds via aldol condensation. For mechanistic clarity, molecular structures of Meldrum's acid- and 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid-derived divinylbipyrroles were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Photoluminescent properties of the synthesized divinylbipyrroles in dichloromethane were found to be dependent on the presence of electron withdrawing groups at the vinylic terminal. The divinylbipyrroles derived from malononitrile, Meldrum's acid, and 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid showed fluorescent peaks at 553, 576, and 602 nm respectively. Computational studies indicated that the alkyl substituents on the bipyrrole 3 and 3' positions increased energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) compared to the unsubstituted derivatives and provided rationale for the bathochromic shift of the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra compared to the previously reported analogs.

A Multidimensional Diversity-Oriented Synthesis Strategy for Structurally Diverse and Complex Macrocycles.

Project description:Synthetic macrocycles are an attractive area in drug discovery. However, their use has been hindered by a lack of versatile platforms for the generation of structurally (and thus shape) diverse macrocycle libraries. Herein, we describe a new concept in library synthesis, termed multidimensional diversity-oriented synthesis, and its application towards macrocycles. This enabled the step-efficient generation of a library of 45 novel, structurally diverse, and highly-functionalized macrocycles based around a broad range of scaffolds and incorporating a wide variety of biologically relevant structural motifs. The synthesis strategy exploited the diverse reactivity of aza-ylides and imines, and featured eight different macrocyclization methods, two of which were novel. Computational analyses reveal a broad coverage of molecular shape space by the library and provides insight into how the various diversity-generating steps of the synthesis strategy impact on molecular shape.

2,2-difluorovinyl benzoates for diverse synthesis of gem-difluoroenol ethers by Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions.

Project description:gem-Difluoroalkene is a bioisostere of carbonyl group for improving bioavailability of drug candidates. Herein we develop structurally diverse 2,2-difluorovinyl benzoates (BzO-DFs) as versatile building blocks for modular synthesis of gem-difluoroenol ethers (44 examples) and gem-difluoroalkenes (2 examples) by Ni-catalyzed cross coupling reactions. Diverse BzO-DFs derivatives bearing sensitive functional groups (e.g., C = C, TMS, strained carbocycles) are readily prepared from their bromodifluoroacetates and bromodifluoroketones precursors using metallic zinc as reductant. With Ni(COD)2 and dppf [1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene] as catalyst, reactions of BzO-DFs with arylboronic acids and arylmagnesium/alkylzinc reagents afforded the desired gem-difluoroenol ethers and gem-difluoroalkenes in good yields. The Ni-catalyzed coupling reactions features highly regioselective C(vinyl)-O(benzoate) bond activation of the BzO-DFs. Results from control experiments and DFT calculations are consistent with a mechanism involving initial oxidative addition of the BzO-DFs by the Ni(0) complex. By virtue of diversity of the BzO-DFs and excellent functional group tolerance, this method is amenable to late-stage functionalization of multifunctionalized bioactive molecules.

A tunable pair electrochemical strategy for the synthesis of new benzenesulfonamide derivatives.

Project description:A green, facile and tunable pair electrochemical process was developed for the synthesis of new benzenesulfonamide derivatives by using reductive controlled potential electrolysis of dinitrobenzene (DNB) in the presence of arylsulfinic acids (ASAs). In addition to the usual features associated with paired electrochemical methods, eg high energy efficient, this method has a tunable characteristic, so that, by adjusting the potential, different products can be synthesized. By applying the potential of -0.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl, N-hydroxy-N-(4-nitrophenyl)benzenesulfonamide derivatives are selectively formed, while, by applying the potential of -1.1 V vs. Ag/AgCl, the final products are N-(4-amino-3-(phenylsulfonyl)phenyl) benzenesulfonamide derivatives. This work beautifully shows the potential applications of the electrochemistry as a powerful tool for the synthesis of organic compounds.
