Metal-Organic Frameworks as Versatile Heterogeneous Solid Catalysts for Henry Reactions.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become one of the versatile solid materials used for a wide range of applications, such as gas storage, gas separation, proton conductivity, sensors and catalysis. Among these fields, one of the more well-studied areas is the use of MOFs as heterogeneous catalysts for a broad range of organic reactions. In the present review, the employment of MOFs as solid catalysts for the Henry reaction is discussed, and the available literature data from the last decade are grouped. The review is organized with a brief introduction of the importance of Henry reactions and structural properties of MOFs that are suitable for catalysis. The second part of the review discusses the use of MOFs as solid catalysts for the Henry reaction involving metal nodes as active sites, while the third section provides data utilizing basic sites (primary amine, secondary amine, amides and urea-donating sites). While commenting on the catalytic results in these two sections, the advantage of MOFs over other solid catalysts is compared in terms of activity by providing turnover number (TON) values and the structural stability of MOFs during the course of the reaction. The final section provides our views on further directions in this field.

Triphenylphosphine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks and Heterogeneous Rh-P-COFs Catalysts.

Project description:The synthesis of phosphine-based functional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has attracted great attention recently. Herein, we present two examples of triphenylphosphine-based COFs (termed P-COFs) with well-defined crystalline structures, high specific surface areas, and good thermal stability. Furthermore, rhodium catalysts with these P-COFs as support material show high turnover frequency for the hydroformylation of olefins, as well as excellent recycling performance. This work not only extends the phosphine-based COF family, but also demonstrates their application in immobilizing homogeneous metal-based (e.g., Rh-phosphine) catalysts for application in heterogeneous catalysis.

Transition Metal Oxodiperoxo Complex Modified Metal-Organic Frameworks as Catalysts for the Selective Oxidation of Cyclohexane.

Project description:In this work, a series of modified metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been prepared by pre- and post-treatment with transition metal oxodiperoxo complexes (MoO(O2)2, WO(O2)2, and KVO(O2)2). The obtained materials are characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), as well as by N2 adsorption/desorption measurement. The characterization results show that transition metal oxodiperoxo complexes are uniformly incorporated into the MOF materials without changing the basic structures. The performance of cyclohexane oxidation on metal oxodiperoxo complex modified MOFs are evaluated. UiO-67-KVO(O2)2 shows the best performance for cyclohexane oxidation, with 78% selectivity to KA oil (KA oil refers to a cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone mixture) at 9.4% conversion. The KA selectivity is found to depend on reaction time, while hot-filtration experiments indicates that the catalytic process is heterogeneous with no leaching of metal species.

Heterogeneous Nickel Catalysts Derived from 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks for Regulating the Selectivity of Furfural Hydrogenation.

Project description:Hydrolysis of the biomass platform compound furfural can produce a bulk of fine chemicals because of its multiple functional groups. Developing an efficient catalytic system to regulate the process toward some desirable products has always been a hot research area. Herein, the novel Ni-based catalysts (Ni-MFC-X, X = 300, 400...800) synthesized by pyrolysis of the 2D Ni-based metal-organic framework (MOF) in the temperature range 300-800 °C show good performance for selective hydrogenation of furfural (FUR). Interestingly, the calcination temperature of the MOF precursor plays an important role in hydrogenation of furfural with controllable selectivity toward furfuryl alcohol (FOL) and tetrahydro FOL (THFOL). Ni-MFC-500 affords us 92.5% conversion of furfural and 59.5% selectivity of FOL. Ni-MFC-700 can promote hydrogenation of furfural with 91.8% conversion and 51.0% selectivity of THFOL. Furthermore, the stability of as-obtained Ni-MFC-500 and Ni-MFC-700 was also very impressive in this reaction system.

Extending supramolecular fullerene-porphyrin chemistry to pillared metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:Porphyrins and fullerenes are spontaneously attracted to each other. This supramolecular recognition element can be exploited to produce ordered arrays of interleaved porphyrins and fullerenes. C(60) x H(2)TpyP x Pb(NO(3))(2) x 1.5TCE (H(2)TpyP = tetra-4-pyridylporphyrin; TCE = 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane) crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/n space group and the structure has been solved to high resolution. The Pb(2+) ions connect the pyridylporphyrins in infinite sheets with an interlayer spacing of 12.1 A. The fullerenes are intercalated between these layers, acting as pillars. The 6:6 ring juncture bonds of C(60) are centered over the porphyrins, bringing the layers into strict tetragonal register. This arrangement identifies the fullerene-porphyrin interaction as a structure-defining element. The same motif is seen in a related ribbon structure having C(70) intercalated into HgI(2)-linked H(2)TpyTP. The supramolecular design principles involved in assembling these chromophores may have applications in materials science.

Novel Lanthanide(III) Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: Structure, Gas Adsorption, and Magnetic Properties.

Project description:The present work focuses on the hydrothermal synthesis and properties of porous coordination polymers of metal-porphyrin framework (MPF) type, namely, {[Pr4(H2TPPS)3]·11H2O} n (UPJS-10), {[Eu/Sm(H2TPPS)]·H3O+·16H2O} n (UPJS-11), and {[Ce4(H2TPPS)3]·11H2O} n (UPJS-12) (H2TPPS = 4,4',4″,4‴-(porphyrin-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakisbenzenesulfonate(4-)). The compounds were characterized using several analytical techniques: infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric measurements, elemental analysis, gas adsorption measurements, and single-crystal structure analysis (SXRD). The results of SXRD revealed a three-dimensional open porous framework containing crossing cavities propagating along all crystallographic axes. Coordination of H2TPPS4- ligands with Ln(III) ions leads to the formation of 1D polymeric chains propagating along the c crystallographic axis. Argon sorption measurements at -186 °C show that the activated MPFs have apparent BET surface areas of 260 m2 g-1 (UPJS-10) and 230 m2 g-1 (UPJS-12). Carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms at 0 °C show adsorption capacities up to 1 bar of 9.8 wt % for UPJS-10 and 8.6 wt % for UPJS-12. At a temperature of 20 °C, the respective CO2 adsorption capacities decreased to 6.95 and 5.99 wt %, respectively. The magnetic properties of UPJS-10 are characterized by the presence of a close-lying nonmagnetic ground singlet and excited doublet states in the electronic spectrum of Pr(III) ions. A much larger energy difference was suggested between the two lowest Kramers doublets of Ce(III) ions in UPJS-12. Finally, the analysis of X-band EPR spectra revealed the presence of radical spins, which were tentatively assigned to be originating from the porphyrin ligands.

Porphyrin Molecules Decorated on Metal-Organic Frameworks for Multi-Functional Biomedical Applications.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used as porous nanomaterials for different applications ranging from industrial to biomedicals. An unpredictable one-pot method is introduced to synthesize NH2-MIL-53 assisted by high-gravity in a greener media for the first time. Then, porphyrins were deployed to adorn the surface of MOF to increase the sensitivity of the prepared nanocomposite to the genetic materials and in-situ cellular protein structures. The hydrogen bond formation between genetic domains and the porphyrin' nitrogen as well as the surface hydroxyl groups is equally probable and could be considered a milestone in chemical physics and physical chemistry for biomedical applications. In this context, the role of incorporating different forms of porphyrins, their relationship with the final surface morphology, and their drug/gene loading efficiency were investigated to provide a predictable pattern in regard to the previous works. The conceptual phenomenon was optimized to increase the interactions between the biomolecules and the substrate by reaching the limit of detection to 10 pM for the Anti-cas9 protein, 20 pM for the single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), below 10 pM for the single guide RNA (sgRNA) and also around 10 nM for recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen. Also, the MTT assay showed acceptable relative cell viability of more than 85% in most cases, even by increasing the dose of the prepared nanostructures.

The first chiral diene-based metal-organic frameworks for highly enantioselective carbon-carbon bond formation reactions.

Project description:We have designed the first chiral diene-based metal-organic framework (MOF), E2-MOF, and postsynthetically metalated E2-MOF with Rh(i) complexes to afford highly active and enantioselective single-site solid catalysts for C-C bond formation reactions. Treatment of E2-MOF with [RhCl(C2H4)2]2 led to a highly enantioselective catalyst for 1,4-additions of arylboronic acids to ?,?-unsaturated ketones, whereas treatment of E2-MOF with Rh(acac)(C2H4)2 afforded a highly efficient catalyst for the asymmetric 1,2-additions of arylboronic acids to aldimines. Interestingly, E2-MOF·Rh(acac) showed higher activity and enantioselectivity than the homogeneous control catalyst, likely due to the formation of a true single-site catalyst in the MOF. E2-MOF·Rh(acac) was also successfully recycled and reused at least seven times without loss of yield and enantioselectivity.

Hierarchical N-Doped CuO/Cu Composites Derived from Dual-Ligand Metal-Organic Frameworks as Cost-Effective Catalysts for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation.

Project description:Development of multi-ligand metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and derived heteroatom-doped composites as efficient non-noble metal-based catalysts is highly desirable. However, rational design of these materials with controllable composition and structure remains a challenge. In this study, novel hierarchical N-doped CuO/Cu composites were synthesized by assembling dual-ligand MOFs via a solvent-induced coordination modulation/low-temperature pyrolysis method. Different from a homogeneous system, our heterogeneous nucleation strategy provided more flexible and cost-effective MOF production and offered efficient direction/shape-controlled synthesis, resulting in a faster reaction and more complete conversion. After pyrolysis, they further transformed to a unique metal/carbon matrix with regular morphology and, as a hot template, guided the orderly generation of metal oxides, eliminating sintering and agglomeration of metal oxides and initiating a synergistic effect between the N-doped metal oxide/metal and carbon matrix. The prepared N-doped CuO/Cu catalysts held unique water resistance and superior catalytic activity (100% CO conversion at 140 °C).

Retrofitting metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:The post-synthetic installation of linker molecules between open-metal sites (OMSs) and undercoordinated metal-nodes in a metal-organic framework (MOF) - retrofitting - has recently been discovered as a powerful tool to manipulate macroscopic properties such as the mechanical robustness and the thermal expansion behavior. So far, the choice of cross linkers (CLs) that are used in retrofitting experiments is based on qualitative considerations. Here, we present a low-cost computational framework that provides experimentalists with a tool for evaluating various CLs for retrofitting a given MOF system with OMSs. After applying our approach to the prototypical system CL@Cu3BTC2 (BTC?=?1,3,5-benzentricarboxylate) the methodology was expanded to NOTT-100 and NOTT-101 MOFs, identifying several promising CLs for future CL@NOTT-100 and CL@NOTT-101 retrofitting experiments. The developed model is easily adaptable to other MOFs with OMSs and is set-up to be used by experimentalists, providing a guideline for the synthesis of new retrofitted MOFs with modified physicochemical properties.
