The Ami-AliA/AliB oligopeptide permease of <i>Streptococcus pneumoniae</i> has been suggested to play a role in environmental sensing and colonisation of the nasopharynx by this human bacterial pathogen by binding peptides derived from bacterial neighbours of other species in the microbiota.
