Hotel booking demand datasets.

ABSTRACT: This data article describes two datasets with hotel demand data. One of the hotels (H1) is a resort hotel and the other is a city hotel (H2). Both datasets share the same structure, with 31 variables describing the 40,060 observations of H1 and 79,330 observations of H2. Each observation represents a hotel booking. Both datasets comprehend bookings due to arrive between the 1st of July of 2015 and the 31st of August 2017, including bookings that effectively arrived and bookings that were canceled. Since this is hotel real data, all data elements pertaining hotel or costumer identification were deleted. Due to the scarcity of real business data for scientific and educational purposes, these datasets can have an important role for research and education in revenue management, machine learning, or data mining, as well as in other fields.

Formation mechanism of the quarantine hotel booking intention of potential consumers

Project description:In this paper, we investigated the quarantine hotel (QH) booking intention (BI) of potential consumers from a corporate social responsibility (CSR) perspective. Mixed methods were adopted to explore the formation mechanisms of QH BI of potential consumers when the COVID-19 pandemic recedes. In Study 1, we constructed a theoretical model of QH BI of potential consumers based on grounded theory and put forward research propositions. In Study 2, we tested the robustness of the model and identified the mediating effect through two situational experiments. The research results showed that: (1) Potential customers are more willing to book QHs than normal hotels (NHs). (2) Multiple mediating mechanisms are involved in the effect of the operation as a quarantine facility on BI of potential consumers, including “QH-corporate social responsibility (CSR)-customer trust (CT)-BI” and “QH-CSR-customer gratitude (CG)-BI.” This research not only has theoretical significance for deepening and expanding social exchange theory and hotel CSR theories but also provides guidance for the participation of the hotel industry in the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic and hotel marketing after the pandemic ends.

The impact of public health emergencies on hotel demand - Estimation from a new foresight perspective on the COVID-19.

Project description:This paper proposes a new foresight approach to estimate the impact of public health emergencies on hotel demand. The forecasting-based influence evaluation consists of four modules: decomposing hotel demand before an emergency, matching each decomposed component to a forecasting model, combining the predictions as the expected demand after the emergency, and estimating the impact by comparing actual demand against that predicted. The method is applied to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on Macao's hotel industry. The empirical results show that: 1) the new approach accurately estimates COVID-19's impact on hotel demand; 2) the seasonal and industry development components contribute significantly to the estimate of expected demand; 3) COVID-19's impact is heterogeneous across hotel services.

Datasets on South Korean manufacturing factories' electricity consumption and demand response participation.

Project description:This study describes the release of electricity consumption data of some manufacturing factories located in South Korea that participate in the demand response (DR) market. The data (in kilowatt) comprise individual factories' total power usage details that were acquired using advanced metering infrastructures. They further contain details on the manufacture types, DR participation dates, mandatory reduction capacities, and response capacities of the factories. For data acquisition, 10 manufacturing companies are representatively selected according to the process regularity and company size standard of this study. Entire datasets are newly collected and available at one-minute intervals for seven months from 1 March to 30 September 2019. These datasets can be used in a variety of ways to contribute to the functioning of power systems and markets, including the conduction of industrial load characteristic analysis for load flexibility, estimation of demand-side considerations for virtual power plant design, and determination of energy markets and incentives to achieve carbon neutrality targets at the national level.

Average booking curves draw exponential functions.

Project description:The booking curve time series in perishable asset industries, including hotels, has been studied to manage a demand-supply condition or revenue management (RM). However, due to changing times, e.g., economy and technology, many RM practitioners have put their efforts into catching on to peoples' booking pattern shifts, representing macroscopic changes in booking curves. We investigate macroscopic aspects of booking curves with actual sales data across six properties in the hotel and car-rental industries for two years, considering the difference in the economic environment characterized before and during the COVID-19 epidemic. We explain a new cross-industry and cross-economic-environment universal statistical law: average booking curves draw exponential functions (the ABCDEF law). We provide a basis for the ABCDEF law from three perspectives; data validation, modeling in the statistical physics framework, and empirical justification for the causality of the model. The ABCDEF law derives informative statistics to quantitatively measure peoples' buying behavior even in time or society changes, which is expected to contribute to management in various industries.

The role of open innovation, hotel service quality and marketing strategy in hotel business performance.

Project description:These days, instead of developing and marketing new products in the market, organizations are shifting towards commercialization. Therefore, open innovation is of much importance in this era of industrialization. In this study, open innovation is used as a strategic tool to improve the service innovation and organizational performance of the Malaysian hospitality industry. Therefore, the objective of this research study is to examine the role of open innovation in business performance of Malaysian hospitality industry. A survey is conducted with the management of the organizations of the hospitality industry to collect data. Partial Least Square-Structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) tool is used to test the hypothesis and get results. The findings of the study highlighted that open innovation is the main source of boosting organizational performance in the hospitality industry of Malaysia. The increase in open innovation practices among hotels can increase the business performance by increasing return on investment, return on assets, return on sales and return on equity. The term open innovation incorporates ICT, innovation in the organization, and internal and external knowledge management. Accumulation of these elements forms a mechanism that results in an increase in organizational performance by incorporating service innovation. Hence, this study is most suitable to develop strategies for service innovation using open innovation that improves organizational performance.

Resident perspectives on a pre-booking diversion program.

Project description:Numerous cities are experimenting with pre-booking diversion programs that allow police officers to divert community members to supportive services in instances that would otherwise result in arrest and prosecution. These programs aim to decrease harmful involvement with the criminal justice system while reducing crime and public disorder. Although previous research has explored the experiences of people receiving diversion referrals and of police officers initiating them, none have examined the perspectives of community members who can offer crucial insights into planning, evaluation, and implementation barriers. We administered a survey to 293 people living in four police districts where the Philadelphia Police Department operates a pre-booking diversion program. The survey explored residents' perspectives on the program as well as their broader views on associated issues like decriminalization of substance use, sex work, and minor theft. Bivariate χ2 tests and multivariate logistic regression examined differences in responses between subgroups. Perspectives were diverse and varied based on demographic attributes of the respondents as well as on district level attributes, like crime patterns. Most surveyed community members perceived pre-booking diversion to be a valuable tool for improving the experiences and outcomes of policing. However, residents living in areas with more crime and with more public disorder held significantly less positive perspectives. Their skepticism may reflect the possibility that pre-booking diversion and similar reforms are necessary but not sufficient to transforming individual health and public safety in some areas.

The COVID-19 pandemic: The mitigating role of government and hotel support of hotel employees in Egypt.

Project description:We investigated the effect of government support of hotels on hotels' employee support (namely, health support, staff retention, and staff training) and consequently on employee job satisfaction and organizational commitment, through the moderating role of perceived overall organizational justice and ethical climate, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a quantitative approach and a framework that drew on the stakeholder and organizational support theories, we collected data from 669 employees in Egyptian hotels through a web-based survey. The results support the proposed framework and show a positive effect of government support through the strengthened perception of perceived overall organizational justice. Surprisingly, findings indicated that the association between job satisfaction and organizational commitment is significantly and negatively influenced by hotel ethical climate. Furthermore, job satisfaction partially mediates the association between hotels' support of employees and organizational commitment. The study holds important implications for both theory and practice.

Leadership and crisis management and their link to improvement of hotel performance: A study of the Jordanian hotel sector.

Project description:The current environment of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity has created a prolonged state of uncertainty for the Jordanian hotel industry. Crisis management leadership is one of the most important attributes for a hotel. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the mediating role of crisis management, the moderating role of a leader's experience, their relationship to styles of leadership (transformational and transactional) and the resultant performance of Jordanian hotels. Research was based on a self-distributed questionnaire survey of 119 respondents currently holding managerial positions in Jordanian 3 to 5 star hotels. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling was then employed. The findings suggest a transformational leadership style and crisis management experience are the most important attributes for a leader to sustain hotel performance during a crisis. Leaders with a transactional leadership style need crisis management skills to sustain hotel performance rather than experience which is not as important in their case. This paper proves that different leadership styles have a different influence on a hotel's survivability during a crisis. Therefore, a hotel's management group must ensure that a leader with an appropriate leadership style takes control during these situations. By combining leadership attributes, experience, and crisis management in a comprehensive framework to ensure sustainable hotel performance in the face of a crisis, this study adds to the body of knowledge on leadership and crisis management practices.

Project description:The data presented in this article are related to the research article "Optimal procurement and production planning for multi-product multi-stage production under yield uncertainty" (Talay and Özdemir-Akyıldırım, in press) [1]. The data includes: 1) the input parameters (production yield, demand, and costs) collected through comprehensive review of the literature and diversified further to enrich the analytical results, and 2) results from mathematical modeling and analysis on the optimal procurement and semi-processed material allocation decisions for different parameter sets. The dataset is particularly constructed for a production system with two stages and three final products.
