Two new species of Amphinemura (Plecoptera, Nemouridae) from the southern Qinling Mountains of China, based on male, female and larvae.

ABSTRACT: Two new species of the genus Amphinemura, A.albicauda sp. n. and A.dingoidea sp. n. from the southern Qinling Mountains, Foping County of Shaanxi Province, western China, are described based on both sexes and the larval stage. The new species are compared with related taxa, and the A.sinensis species group is defined for an Oriental lineage of the genus. Amphinemurasinensis (Wu, 1926) and A.unihamata (Wu, 1973) are reported from Shaanxi for the first time, and the hitherto unknown female of A.unihamata is described. A distribution map of the Amphinemurinae known from Qinling Mountains is given.

Project description:Two new species of the genus Amphinemura Ris from China are described and illustrated, i.e. A. annulata Du & Ji, sp. n. from Zhejiang, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Guizhou Province, and A. lingulata Du & Wang, sp. n. from Shaanxi and Sichuan Province. A. annulata is similar to A. tricintusidens Wang & Zhu in having an apical cavity of the epiproct, but the epiproct ventral sclerite and the median paraproct lobe of the two species are different. A. lingulata is related to A. didyma Zhu & Yang in having the similar epiproct, but they differ mostly in paraproct median and outer lobes.

Spatial patterns of dominant bacterial community components and their influential factors in the southern Qinling Mountains, China.

Project description:IntroductionSoil bacteria not only maintain the biodiversity of forest ecosystems but also affect soil nutrient cycling and ecosystem function. Nonetheless, the spatial pattern and patchy distribution of dominant bacterial community components in soil are still rarely explored.MethodThe spatial pattern and distribution of the dominant bacterial community components and their influential factors were investigated using traditional statistics, geostatistics, and kriging spatial interpolation methods in the Huoditang region of the Qinling Mountains, China.ResultsThe dominant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Rokubacteria, Actinobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia in this region. Among the bacterial phyla, Proteobacteria occupied an area of 2.56 km2 (the greatest) in the highest patch category, followed by Planctomycetes. Moreover, among the lowest patch category, Firmicutes occupied the lowest area (11.93 km2). The results of kriging maps showed that the dominant bacterial group presented "peak," "bimodal," and "multimodal" distributions in Huoditang. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadetes, Nitrospirae, and ASV (amplicon sequence variants) had significant spatial autocorrelation (< 0.68 km). Variance partitioning analysis confirmed that soil nutrients (36.5%) were the significant driving factors shaping the bacterial community structure, followed by environmental factors (28.2%) and topographic factors (7.8%). Furthermore, pH (9.1%), soil organic carbon (SOC, 6.6%), available phosphorus (AP, 4.7%), and elevation (3.9%) were the most important driving factors for the spatial distribution of bacterial community groups in the Huoditang Forest of the Qinling Mountains. The findings provide a new perspective for studying the spatial distribution characteristics and driving factors of dominant soil bacterial community components in subtropical forest ecosystems.

Notes on the Asian distribution of the Nemourinae are also given.

The complete mitochondrial genome of a stonefly species, Indonemoura auriformis (Plecoptera: Nemouridae).

Project description:One new mitochondrial genome of Indonemoura auriformis from the family Nemouridae (Insecta: Plecoptera) was sequenced in the study. The mitochondrial genome has the length of 15,718?bp, encoding 37 genes: 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The whole nucleotide composition biased adenine and thymine with A?+?T accounting for 69.9%. Nine PCGs and 14 tRNA genes are encoded in the J chain, the other four PCGs, eight tRNAs, and two rRNA genes are encoded in the chain of N. The mitochondrial genome includes 13 gene overlaps and 12 intergenic spacers. Most PCGs strictly use the ATN as start codon, and terminate with traditional stop codon (TAA and TAG). Except the tRNASer(AGN) seems to lack dihydrogen glycine arm, all tRNA genes of the mitochondrial genome are the typical clover secondary structure. The phylogenetic tree of PCGs dataset based on bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) analysis show the same tree topology. Both ML and BI analysis support the sister-group relationship between Amphinemuria and Nemoura. Meanwhile, Capniidae is closely related to Taeniopterygidae.

The affinities towards related species are discussed, together with generic characters of the larvae. Indonemourascalprata (Li & Yang, 2007) is recorded from Guangxi for the first time, and its hitherto unknown female is described.

Postconflict behavior among Rhinopithecus roxellana leader males in the Qinling Mountains, China.

Project description:Since reconciliation was first described more than 20 years ago, a large number of postconflict behaviors have been observed among females in many polygynous primate species. However, few studies have been conducted among males, perhaps due to the rarity with which they maintain friendly relationships with one another and their aggressive competition for resources. Although this is true for many primate males, Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys Rhinopithecus roxellana represent a potential exception as male cooperation has been known to occur. In this study, using postconflict/matched-control(PC-MC) and time-rule methods, we analyzed postconflict behavior among males and the possible occurrence of bystander affiliation or reconciliation. A total of 246 PC-MC pairs among leader males were obtained. On average, each leader male exhibited only 0.04 aggressive behaviors per observation hour, and conciliation among leader males occurred at a low rate (2.03%) relative to other primate species. The occurrence of consolation-affiliation interactions between focal males and group members other than former opponents differed significantly between PCs and MCs, which is the first time this has been confirmed among R. roxellana males. We discuss the results in light of recent theories concerning consolation in primates. The patterns of postconflict contact demonstrated that R. roxellana may be a unique species among colobines.

The mitochondrial genome analysis of Sphaeronemoura elephas (Plecoptera: Nemouridae) from Jiangxi Province of southeastern China.

Project description:We sequenced and annotated the species of Sphaeronemoura elephas which represents the first record for continental China from Jiangxi Province in this study to provide mitochondrial genome data for future studies. The entire mitochondrial genome of S. elephas harbored 37 typical code genes and one control region with 15,846 bp in length. The A + T account of total nucleotide, PCGs, tRNAs, rRNAs and control region were 67.1, 64.5, 70.5, 71.0, 82.4%, respectively and the A + T content was the highest in control region. The start codon of all PCGs used ATN except ND5 and ND1 started with GTG and TTG. Eleven PCGs used typical terminal codon TAA or TAG while the COII and ND5 stopped with the single T. Based on 13 PCGs by using Bayesian (BI) and maximum-likelihood (ML) methods, we found that the genus Sphaeronemoura and Mesonemoura were sister groups and the species of Amphinemurinae was monophyletic group.

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of Nemoura meniscata Li & yang (Plecoptera: Nemouridae) from China.

Project description:We sequenced the third complete mitochondrial genome of Nemoura meniscataby using the high-throughput sequencing method. The mitochondrial genome harbored 37 typical code genes and a control region with 15,895 bp in length was a double-stranded and circular genome. The nucleotide composition is partial to A and T. Seventy-eight nucleotides were dispersed in 10 intergenic spacers and gene overlaps were also found at 13 gene junctions with 48 nucleotides. In phylogenetic trees, the 13 Nemouridae species form a clade diverged from the outgroup clade. The genus Nemoura and Amphinemura were sister groups which is consistent with the previous study.
