Green Procedure to Manufacture Nanoparticle-Decorated Paper Substrates.

ABSTRACT: For this study, a paper impregnated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was prepared. To prepare the substrates, aqueous suspensions of pulp fines, a side product from the paper production, were mixed with AgNP suspensions. The nanoparticle (NP) synthesis was then carried out via laser ablation of pure Ag in water. After the sheet formation process, the leaching of the AgNPs was determined to be low while the sheets exhibited antimicrobial activity toward Escherichia coli (E. coli).

Mammalian cell growth on gold nanoparticle-decorated substrates is influenced by the nanoparticle coating.

Project description:In this work, we study epithelial cell growth on substrates decorated with gold nanorods that are functionalized either with a positively charged cytotoxic surfactant or with a biocompatible polymer exhibiting one of two different end groups, resulting in a neutral or negative surface charge of the particle. Upon observation of cell growth for three days by live cell imaging using optical dark field microscopy, it was found that all particles supported cell adhesion while no directed cell migration and no significant particle internalization occurred. Concerning cell adhesion and spreading as compared to cell growth on bare substrates after 3 days of incubation, a reduction by 45% and 95%, respectively, for the surfactant particle coating was observed, whereas the amino-terminated polymer induced a reduction by 30% and 40%, respectively, which is absent for the carboxy-terminated polymer. Furthermore, interface-sensitive impedance spectroscopy (electric cell-substrate impedance sensing, ECIS) was employed in order to investigate the micromotility of cells added to substrates decorated with various amounts of surfactant-coated particles. A surface density of 65 particles/µm(2) (which corresponds to 0.5% of surface coverage with nanoparticles) diminishes micromotion by 25% as compared to bare substrates after 35 hours of incubation. We conclude that the surface coating of the gold nanorods, which were applied to the basolateral side of the cells, has a recognizable influence on the growth behavior and thus the coating should be carefully selected for biomedical applications of nanoparticles.

Silver Nanoparticle-Decorated Silica Nanospheres and Arrays as Potential Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering.

Project description:Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as both a modifier and reductant to in situ deposit silver nanoparticles (denoted Ag NPs) on the surface of silica nanospheres (nanosilica or nano-SiO2), affording Ag-decorated nanosilica (denoted SiO2@Ag). The as-obtained SiO2@Ag composite can form silver nanoparticle-decorated silica nanosphere arrays (denoted SiO2@Ag arrays) via evaporation-induced self-assembly. The as-prepared SiO2@Ag composite and SiO2@Ag array were used as the SERS substrates to measure the Raman signals of the dilute solutions of rhodamine 6G (denoted R6G), an organic dye that is a potential pollutant to the environment. The findings indicate that the as-prepared SiO2@Ag composite and SiO2@Ag array as potential SERS substrates simultaneously exhibit a high degree of metal coverage and small size of Ag NPs as well as good stability and abundant "hot spots", which contributes to their desired Raman enhancement capacities. For the detection of trace R6G, they provide a limit of detection of as low as 10-9-10-11 M as well as good reproducibility, showing promising potential for monitoring chemical and biological molecules.

Ag nanoparticle decorated MnO<sub>2</sub> flakes as flexible SERS substrates for rhodamine 6G detection.

Project description:Smart design of advanced substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity is challenging but vital. Herein, we synthesized a new kind of AgNPs/MnO2@Al flexible substrate as a SERS substrate for the detection of the analyte rhodamine 6G (R6G). The fabrication of porous MnO2 nanoflakes on Al foil was conducted via a facile hydrothermal strategy. Owing to the large active surface area of the MnO2 nanoflakes, the Ag nanoparticles were immobilized and displayed superior SERS performance with a low detection concentration of 1 × 10-6 M for R6G. In addition, the SERS performance was found to be strongly related to the morphology of the MnO2@Al substrate material. Our smart design may provide a new method of construction for other advanced SERS substrates for the detection of R6G.

SERS Determination of Oxidative Stress Markers in Saliva Using Substrates with Silver Nanoparticle-Decorated Silicon Nanowires.

Project description:Glutathione and malondialdehyde are two compounds commonly used to evaluate the oxidative stress status of an organism. Although their determination is usually performed in blood serum, saliva is gaining ground as the biological fluid of choice for oxidative stress determination at the point of need. For this purpose, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), which is a highly sensitive method for the detection of biomolecules, could offer additional advantages regarding the analysis of biological fluids at the point of need. In this work, silicon nanowires decorated with silver nanoparticles made by metal-assisted chemical etching were evaluated as substrates for the SERS determination of glutathione and malondialdehyde in water and saliva. In particular, glutathione was determined by monitoring the reduction in the Raman signal obtained from substrates modified with crystal violet upon incubation with aqueous glutathione solutions. On the other hand, malondialdehyde was detected after a reaction with thiobarbituric acid to produce a derivative with a strong Raman signal. The detection limits achieved after optimization of several assay parameters were 50 and 3.2 nM for aqueous solutions of glutathione and malondialdehyde, respectively. In artificial saliva, however, the detection limits were 2.0 and 0.32 μM for glutathione and malondialdehyde, respectively, which are, nonetheless, adequate for the determination of these two markers in saliva.

Ag/Au Nanoparticle-Loaded Paper-Based Versatile Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates for Multiple Explosives Detection.

Project description:We present a systematic study on the fabrication, characterization of versatile, and low-cost filter paper-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates loaded with salt-induced aggregated Ag/Au nanoparticles (NPs). These were demonstrated as efficient SERS substrates for the detection of multiple explosive molecules such as picric acid (5 μM), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (1 μM), and 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (10 μM) along with a common dye molecule (methylene blue, 5 nM). The concentrations of the dye and explosive molecules in terms of mass represent 31.98 pg, 11.45 ng, 1.82 ng, and 13.06 ng, respectively. Silver (Ag) and gold (Au) colloidal NPs were prepared by femtosecond laser (∼50 fs, 800 nm, 1 kHz) ablation of Ag/Au-target immersed in distilled water. Subsequently, the aggregated nanoparticles were achieved by mixing the pure Ag and Au NPs with different concentrations of NaCl. These aggregated NPs were characterized by UV-visible absorption and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy techniques. The SERS substrates were prepared by soaking the filter paper in aggregated NPs. The morphologies of the paper substrates were investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy technique. We have achieved superior enhancements with high reproducibility and sensitivity for filter paper substrates loaded with Ag/Au NPs mixed for an optimum concentration of 50 mM NaCl.

Gold nanoparticle decorated titania for sustainable environmental remediation: green synthesis, enhanced surface adsorption and synergistic photocatalysis.

Project description:Developing materials for efficient environmental remediation via cheap, nontoxic and environmentally benign routes remains a challenge for the scientific community. Here, a novel, facile, and green synthetic approach to prepare gold nanoparticle decorated TiO2 (Au/TiO2) nanocomposites for sustainable environmental remediation is reported. The synthesis involved only TiO2, metal precursor and green tea, obviating the need for any solvents and/or harsh chemical reducing or stabilizing agents, and was efficiently conducted at 50 °C, indicating the prominent sustainability of the novel synthetic approach. The synthesis indicated notable atom economy, akin to that observed in a typical chemical mediated synthesis while high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) findings suggest the presence of a pertinent decoration of spherical and homogeneous gold nanoparticles on the titania surface. Notably, the Au/TiO2 nanocomposite demonstrated appreciable stability during preparation, subsequent processing and prolonged storage. Further, the nanocomposite was found to have a superior adsorption capacity of 8185 mg g-1 towards methylene blue (MB) in solution using the Freundlich isotherm model, while the rate constants for the photocatalytic degradation of MB on the nanocomposite under UV irradiation indicated a 4.2-fold improvement compared to that of bare TiO2. Hence, this novel green synthesized Au/TiO2 nanocomposite shows promising potential for sustainable environmental remediation via efficient contaminant capture and subsequent synergistic photocatalysis.

Biomimetic Silk Nanoparticle Manufacture: Calcium Ion-Mediated Assembly.

Project description:Silk has emerged as an interesting candidate among protein-based nanocarriers due to its favorable properties, including biocompatibility and a broad spectrum of processing options to tune particle critical quality attributes. The silk protein conformation during storage in the middle silk gland of the silkworm is modulated by various factors, including the most abundant metallic ion, calcium ion (Ca2+). Here, we report spiking of liquid silk with calcium ions to modulate the silk nanoparticle size. Conformational and structural analyses of silk demonstrated Ca2+-induced silk assemblies that resulted in a liquid crystalline-like state, with the subsequent generation of β-sheet-enriched silk nanoparticles. Thioflavin T studies demonstrated that Ca2+ effectively induces self-assembly and conformation changes that also increased model drug loading. Ca2+ incorporation in the biopolymer feed significantly increased the nanoparticle production yield from 16 to 89%, while simultaneously enabling Ca2+ concentration-dependent particle-size tuning with a narrow polydispersity index and altered zeta potential. The resulting silk nanoparticles displayed high biocompatibility in macrophages with baseline levels of cytotoxicity and cellular inflammation. Our strategy for manufacturing biomimetic silk nanoparticles enabled overall tuning of particle size and improved yields─features that are critical for particle-based nanomedicines.

Green and Sustainable Manufacture of Ultrapure Engineered Nanomaterials.

Project description:Nanomaterials with very specific features (purity, colloidal stability, composition, size, shape, location…) are commonly requested by cutting-edge technologic applications, and hence a sustainable process for the mass-production of tunable/engineered nanomaterials would be desirable. Despite this, tuning nano-scale features when scaling-up the production of nanoparticles/nanomaterials has been considered the main technological barrier for the development of nanotechnology. Aimed at overcoming these challenging frontier, a new gas-phase reactor design providing a shorter residence time, and thus a faster quenching of nanoclusters growth, is proposed for the green, sustainable, versatile, cost-effective, and scalable manufacture of ultrapure engineered nanomaterials (ranging from nanoclusters and nanoalloys to engineered nanostructures) with a tunable degree of agglomeration, composition, size, shape, and location. This method enables: (1) more homogeneous, non-agglomerated ultrapure Au-Ag nanoalloys under 10 nm; (2) 3-nm non-agglomerated ultrapure Au nanoclusters with lower gas flow rates; (3) shape-controlled Ag NPs; and (4) stable Au and Ag engineered nanostructures: nanodisks, nanocrosses, and 3D nanopillars. In conclusion, this new approach paves the way for the green and sustainable mass-production of ultrapure engineered nanomaterials.

Green synthesis of carbon-supported nanoparticle catalysts by physical vapor deposition on soluble powder substrates.

Project description:Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) supported on high surface area carbon (NP/Cs) were prepared by the physical vapor deposition of bulk materials on an α-D-glucose (Glu) substrate, followed by the deposition of the NPs on carbon supports. Using Glu as a carrier for the transport of NPs from the bulk materials to the carbon support surfaces, ultrafine NPs were obtained, exhibiting a stabilizing effect through OH moieties on the Glu surfaces. This stabilizing effect was strong enough to stabilize the NPs, but weak enough to not significantly block the metal surfaces. As only the target materials and Glu are required in our procedure, it can be considered environmentally friendly, with the NPs being devoid of hazardous chemicals. Furthermore, the resulting NP/Cs exhibited an improvement in activity for various electrochemical reactions, mainly attributed to their high surface area.
