Data on the domestic processed output, balancing items, and solid waste potential for five major world economies.

ABSTRACT: This data article reports the domestic processed output (DPO), balancing items, and solid waste potential for five major world economies (Australia, China, Germany, Japan, and the United States of America) for the years 1990-2015. The main DPO database assembles data from a number of national and international sources. Linking this with data on domestic material consumption and the calculation of balancing items, we have been able to provide fully balanced inputs and outputs for these five economies. To integrate poor statistics on solid waste, we modelled an additional solid waste potential account based on a stock and flow driven model that estimates solid waste output for the year 2015. These data underlies the research published in "On the importance of linking inputs and outputs in material flow accounts. The Weight of Nations report revisited" (Schandl and Miatto, 2018).

Balancing fertility and livelihood diversity in mixed economies.

Project description:Mixed economies provide a unique context for testing theories of fertility change. Because they have a stake in two traditions, mixed-economy households balance the demands of both a labor-based subsistence economy, which benefits from a large family, and a wage-labor economy, which benefits from reduced fertility. Additionally, household size changes over the course of its life-cycle and shapes available economic opportunities. Here we argue that in mixed economies, fertility may reflect opportunities for livelihood diversity rather than simply responding to the restricted socioeconomic benefits of small families. While low fertility may in some cases have an economic benefit, low fertility can also limit the livelihood diversity of a household which is a key strategy for long-term economic success. We test this prediction with longitudinal data from a Maya community undergoing both a sustained decline in fertility and rapid integration into the market economy. Using household-level fertility, number of adults, and livelihood diversity at two time points, we find that household size is positively related to livelihood diversity, which in turn is positively related to household income per-capita. However, household size also has a negative association with income per capita. The results reflect a balancing act whereby households attempt to maximize the economic diversity with as few members as possible. Broadly, these results suggest that theories of fertility decline must account for how households pool resources and diversify economic activities in the face of increasing market integration, treating fertility as both an outcome and an input into economic and reproductive decision-making.

Analyzing Economy-Scale Solid Waste Generation Using the United States Environmentally-Extended Input-Output Model.

Project description:The United States Environmentally-Extended Input-Output (USEEIO) model includes commercial enterprises from 386 industrial sectors of the economy. The purpose of this work is to model the commercial generation of three streams of solid waste from USEEIO sectors: hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste excluding construction, and non-hazardous waste from construction. The waste accounts cover 536 waste materials, with commercial non-hazardous waste presently limited to municipal solid waste and construction and demolition debris. Total combined generation for all streams based on 2015 economic activity is approximately 775 million metric tons, with concrete from construction activities accounting for 44% of this mass. The chemical and plastics industries generate the most commercial hazardous waste per dollar of economic output. In most cases, waste materials such as paper, plastic, and metals are generated in greater quantities per dollar of industry output when compared to commercial construction materials and hazardous waste. When considering direct waste generation within an industry, USEEIO model rankings identified the highway and street construction and chemical manufacturing industries as potential areas to continue to pursue new innovations in material use. The rankings change when considering final consumption of goods and services, with various construction industries and state and local governments becoming more prominent. The full detailed waste models are publicly available and will be incorporated into future USEEIO releases. Quantification of waste material generation across the economy is an essential part of decision making because it will highlight areas where intervention may be beneficial.

Influencing factors and reduction of domestic solid waste at university dormitory in Shanghai, China.

Project description:Increasing domestic solid waste (DSW) is becoming one of the most serious challenges for city and regional environment. As an epitome of the society, the investigation on the influencing factors and reduction of DSW of university students can not only provide policy suggestions for the waste management in the university campus, but also can achieve demonstration effect to other communities due to its high social status and wide impacts. This research combined direct weighing, questionnaire surveys, and regression analysis to quantify the influencing factors of DSW at East China Normal University's dormitory in Shanghai. Direct weighting and questionnaire survey were conducted in 112 randomly selected dormitory rooms. Totally 523 valid questionnaires were collected. It is found that the average waste generation was 0.275 kg/day/cap, in which residual waste accounted for 64% of total, followed by household food waste (29%), and recyclable waste (7%). Regressions based on ordinary least square method suggested that students' attitude towards waste played the most important role in affecting the waste reduction with its elasticity - 0.195. Lower educational level and better financial condition would lead to more waste generation, whose elasticity was 0.148 and 0.098 respectively. The influences of gender and major varied from waste types. Policies implications for university administration departments for sustainable waste and resource management include developing personalized and humanized waste management policies, enhancing environmental awareness through diverse educational activities, and expanding the publicity role of campus cultural activities on waste reduction.

Foreign and Domestic Uncertainty Shocks in Four Open Economies

Project description:This paper investigates how the economic performance of four economies with floating exchange rates is affected by shocks in domestic and US economic policy uncertainty. We estimate a Bayesian VAR model describing the dynamics of ten local and US variables for each of the four countries and use it to evaluate the response of the system to structural shocks. The analysis reveals that increased economic uncertainty in the US reduces industrial output in all the countries analysed, while the effect of increased domestic uncertainty varies across the economies. A key finding concerns the role of the exchange rate. Whereas the real effective exchange rate amplifies the effect of uncertainty shocks in the US, it typically helps absorb shocks in the open economies. This asymmetry may reflect the role of the US as a safe haven in times of increased uncertainty.
