Descriptions of immature stages of four species of the genera Graptus, Peritelus, Philopedon, and Tanymecus and larval instar determination in Tanymecus (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae).

ABSTRACT: The mature larva and pupa of Graptustriguttatustriguttatus and the mature larva of Peritelussphaeroides are described for the first time. The larvae of Philopedonplagiatum and Tanymecuspalliatus are re-described. Five larval instars were determined in Tanymecus, thereby correcting doubtful data in the literature. The relationship between larval growth, number of larval instars, head width of the mature larva, and the adult weevil is explained using the example of Tanymecus. The nearly constant ratio of subsequent larval instars in head width ratio, termed "growth factor" and derived from Dyar's ratio, is used for the determination of larval instars. Larval collecting and breeding data are discussed in relation to their significance for the clarification of life-cycles.

Project description:Species of the genus Pseudocneorhinus occurring in or near China are reviewed, with description of five new species, Pseudocneorhinusangustus sp. nov., P.glaber sp. nov., P.hlavaci sp. nov., P.obliquehumeralis sp. nov., and P.setosicallus sp. nov. from the provinces of Beijing, Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, and Zhejiang. They are illustrated and compared with similar species, and a key is provided to all presently known species of the genus. Lectotypes of the following species are designated: Callirhopalussubcallosus Voss, 1956 [current name Pseudocneorhinussubcallosus (Voss, 1956)] and P.squamosus Marshall, 1934. Pseudocneorhinussquameus Morimoto, 2015 is confirmed for the fauna of China.

On Chinese Trachyphloeini with description of four new species (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae).

Project description:Rhinodontodes alashanensis sp. nov., Trachyphloeosoma honza sp. nov., T. jirka sp. nov., and T. martin sp. nov. are described from China, illustrated and compared with similar species. The genus Rhinodontodes and the species Rhinodontodes subsignatus Voss, 1967 and Rhinodontus mongolicus Borovec, 2003 are recorded from China for the first time. Keys to all Chinese genera of Trachyphloeini, and to the Chinese species of Rhinodontodes and Trachyphloeosoma, are provided.

The genus Apodrosus Marshall, 1922 in Cuba (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae, Polydrusini).

Project description:The genus Apodrosus Marshall is newly recorded for, and revised for Cuba. Nine new species are recognized as follows: Apodrosus alberti (type locality, Granma, Parque Nacional Pico Turquino), A. alternatus (type locality, Guantánamo, El Yunque), A. franklyni (type locality, Cienfuegos, Parque Nacional Pico San Juan), A. griseus (type locality, Santiago de Cuba, Siboney-Jutici Ecological Reserve), A. mensurensis (type locality, Holguin, Parque Nacional La Mensura-Piloto), A. pseudoalternatus (type locality, Matanzas, Varahicacos), A. beckeli (type locality, Guantánamo, 8 km W. Imias), A. sandersoni (type locality, Guantánamo, Loma Lafarola), and A. zayasi (type locality, Cienfuegos, Parque Nacional Pico San Juan). A key for their identification, descriptions, summaries of natural history information and data on distributions are presented. A molecular phylogeny based on 11 species of Apodrosus from Cuba, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico is reconstructed. A sister group relationship between Polydrusus and Apodrosus is recovered with a limited sampling of the former genus. The monophyly of Apodrosus is recovered with strong support. Cuban Apodrosus are not monophyletic. Five of the six sampled Cuban species form a clade, sister to an undescribed Apodrosus species from the Dominican Republic; and, Apodrosus alternatus is sister to A. quisqueyanus Girón & Franz, 2010, a species from the Dominican Republic. Biogeographic implications for Cuban species are discussed in light of the phylogeny.

New species in the genera Eumacrocyrtus Schultze, 1923 and Enoplocyrtus Yoshitake, 2017 from Luzon Island, Philippines (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae, Pachyrhynchini).

Project description:We describe and illustrate two new species from two previously monotypic genera Eumacrocyrtus Schultze, 1923 and Enoplocyrtus Yoshitake, 2017 from Luzon Island, Philippines: Eumacrocyrtusrobertfoxisp. nov., and Enoplocyrtusangelalcalaisp. nov.Eumacrocyrtusrobertfoxisp. nov. serves as a new record for Luzon Island for Eumacrocyrtus which was only previously represented by E.canlaonensis Schultze, 1923 from Negros Island whereas Enoplocyrtusangelalcalaisp. nov. serves as an additional record of Enoplocyrtus in Mountain Province in Luzon Island. The discovery of these two new species from the Zoological Collections of the Philippine National Museum, collected in 1947 and 1985, respectively, highlights the value of natural history collections for the present and future generations of researchers.

Mitochondrial genome of Sitona callosus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and phylogenetic analysis within Entiminae.

Project description:In this study, we sequenced and annotated the nearly complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Sitona callosus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). This mitogenome was 14,333?bp long and encoded 13 protein-coding genes, 19 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and two ribosomal RNA unit genes. Gene rearrangements were presented in a tRNA cluster of six tRNAs between nad3 and nad5, i.e. the ancestral order ARNSEF was changed to be RNSAEF. All tRNAs had a typical secondary cloverleaf structure, except for trnS1 which lacked the dihydrouridine arm. The Bayesian phylogenetic tree of 11 Entiminae species based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences of 13 PCGs showed that S. callosus and S. lineatus formed a clade which was at the basal position in the Entiminae phylogeny.

Systematic revision of the genus Isodacrys Sharp, 1911 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae: Tanymecini).

Project description:The genus Isodacrys Sharp, 1911 is revised. Twenty species of the genus are recognized ranging from south United States of America, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras of which eight are herein described as new. These species are Isodacrys antrum Cortés-Hernández, new species (Mexico: Tamaulipas, Chiapas; Guatemala: Baja Verapaz); Isodacrys carlae Cortés-Hernández, new species (Mexico: Coahuila, Hidalgo, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas); Isodacrys confusum Cortés-Hernández, new species (Mexico: Tamaulipas); Isodacrys fasciatum Cortés-Hernández, new species (Mexico: Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León); Isodacrys frontalis Cortés-Hernández, new species (Mexico: Oaxaca; Guatemala: Sacatepéquez, Guatemala); Isodacrys kuchii Cortés-Hernández, new species (Mexico: Puebla); Isodacrys obrienorum Cortés-Hernández, new species (Guatemala: Totonicapán, Jalapa, San Marcos); and Isodacrys okuiltontli Cortés Hernández, new species (Mexico: Oaxaca). Insights into the monophyly of Isodacrys and its phylogenetic relationships with other Tanymecini based on adult morphology are given by implementing a phylogenetic analysis of 43 terminals (21 ingroup, 22 outgroup) coded for 72 adult morphological characters. Characters were discussed and highlighted for the inclusion in the phylogenetic analysis. Final analysis yielded two most-parsimonious cladograms of 242 steps, which support the monophyly of Isodacrys. Isodillex Cortés-Hernández, new genus is here described to accommodate Isodillex minutum (Sharp, 1911), new combination and Isodillex plumosum Cortés-Hernández, new species (Mexico: Zacatecas). Isodillex was recovered as sister group of Isodacrys. Key to separate Isodacrys species, occurrence map and habitus photographs are also provided.

Identifying the Genetic Distance Threshold for Entiminae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Species Delimitation via COI Barcodes.

Project description:The subfamily Entiminae is the largest group in the family Curculionidae, and it has long represented a challenge in traditional and molecular classification. Here, we analyzed intra- and interspecific genetic distances of 621 public COI barcode sequences (658bp) from 39 genera and 110 species of Entiminae, to determine parameters most congruent in retaining established species. We found that the mean intraspecific genetic distance (3.07%) was much smaller than the mean interspecific one (21.96%), but there is a wide range of overlap between intra- and interspecific genetic distances (0.77−18.01%), indicating that there is no consistent, universal barcoding gap. Specifically, DNA barcoding gap analysis for morphospecies revealed that 102 of 110 morphospecies had barcoding gaps, and 9.18% was the optimum threshold of genetic distances for 97 species delimitation. We further confirmed this threshold with barcodes from 27 morphologically identified specimens (including 21 newly reported barcodes) sequenced from five genera and seven species. We also identified thresholds to delimit congeneric species within 14 selected genera (species > 2), which varied from 7.42% (Trichalophus) to 13.48% (Barypeithes). We herein present optimal parameters for species identification in the Entiminae. Our study suggests that despite no universal genetic distance threshold value in subfamily Entiminae, 9.18% is optimal for most species. We recommend a wider sampling of geographic populations to better account for intraspecific distance variation, and that genetic distance thresholds for species delimitation should be refined at the genus level.

Description of the immature stages of Larinus vulpes and notes on its biology (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Lixinae).

Project description:Mature larva and pupa of Larinus vulpes (Olivier, 1807) (Curculionidae: Lixinae: Lixini) are morphologically described for the first time and compared with known larvae and pupae of other Larinus species. Very high counts of larval body setae (pronotum with more than 25 setae and postdorsum on meso- and metathorax and also on abdominal segments I-VII with more than 12 setae) are characteristic features of the nominotypical subgenus Larinus. The biology of the species was studied in Ukraine. Echinops ruthenicus and E. sphaerocephalus were identified as host plants of both larvae and adults of this weevil based on the present research in Ukraine, which shows probably oligophagous. Overwintering beetles emerged at the end of May or earlier, then feeding and mating on the host plants. The highest level of adult activity was observed at the end of June. Larvae were endophagous within the flower heads. In July and August, the larvae pupated within inflorescences in a pupation cell. Adults exited the cells at the end of August and did not hibernate on the host plants. Sometimes, larvae and imagines of a new generation were found outside the flower heads in chambers constructed on the stems.

Project description:An account is given of the twelve species of Leptomias Faust, 1886 occurring in the Sichuan Province of China, including the description of a new species, Leptomias verticalis Ren, Zhang & Song, sp. n. from Jiulong County, Southwest Sichuan. New locality data and remarks for the other eleven species, a key to and distribution map of all twelve Sichuan species are provided. Leptomias chenae Alonso-Zarazaga & Ren is transferred to Geotragus Schoenherr, 1845, where its valid name is G. granulatus (Chao, 1980), comb. n. in application of Art. 59.4. Structural details of Leptomias verticalis and Geotragus granulatus are illustrated.

The morphology of the immature stages of Metadonus vuillefroyanus (Capiomont, 1868) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Hyperini) and notes on its biology.

Project description:Last instar larva and pupa of Metadonus vuillefroyanus (Capiomont, 1868) (Curculionidae: Hyperini) are described and compared with known larvae of the other 43 hyperine taxa. The thorn-like setae located on distinct black protuberances on the larval body are characteristic features of the genus Metadonus and the subgenus Eririnomorphus of the genus Hypera. The biological singularity of this species was studied and described. The variable colouration of larvae has been confirmed in association with the variability of the host plant's colouration at the studied localities. This species' reported inability to spin cocoons has been disproven. A different type of cocoon with two layers, where the inner layer consists of proteins from Malpighian tubules while the outer layer contains soil particles, is described. This type of cocoon is unique compared with those known from other hyperines, which usually pupate on or above the ground and do not use substrate particles in building their cocoons.
