Project description:We herein describe an unprecedented 1,2-bis(trifluoromethylation) of arynes with [CuCF3] in the presence of an oxidant DDQ. The method allows the rapid construction of a new class of 1,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)arenes in one-step from aryne precursors under mild conditions. Its synthetic utility has been demonstrated in the preparation of bis(trifluoromethylated) molecules with potential pharmaceutical and materials science applications. Mechanistic studies indicated the presence of an o-trifluoromethyl aryl radical intermediate via CF3 group transfer from [CuCF3] to the aryne.

Nitrone Cycloadditions of 1,2-Cyclohexadiene.

Project description:We report the first 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of 1,2-cyclohexadiene, a rarely exploited strained allene. 1,2-Cyclohexadiene is generated in situ under mild conditions and trapped with nitrones to give isoxazolidine products in synthetically useful yields. The reactions occur regioselectively and exhibit a notable endo preference, thus resulting in the controlled formation of two new bonds and two stereogenic centers. DFT calculations of stepwise and concerted reaction pathways are used to rationalize the observed selectivities. Moreover, the strategic manipulation of nitrone cycloadducts demonstrates the utility of this methodology for the assembly of compounds bearing multiple heterocyclic units. These studies showcase the exploitation of a traditionally avoided reactive intermediate in chemical synthesis.

Origins of halogen effects in bioorthogonal sydnone cycloadditions.

Project description:Halogen substituents increase sydnone cycloaddition reactivities substantially. Fluoro-sydnones are superior to bromo- and chloro-sydnones, and can achieve extremely high second-order rate constants with strained alkynes. Computational studies have revealed the fluorine substituent increases the reactivity of sydnone mainly by lowering its distortion energy.

1,2-Dihydropentalenes from fulvenes by [6 + 2] cycloadditions with 1-isopropenylpyrrolidine.

Project description:In situ generated acetone pyrrolidine enamine undergoes [6 + 2] cycloadditions with fulvenes to give 1,2-dihydropentalenes. This ring annulation method works particularly well with 6-monosubstituted fulvenes and is subject to steric hindrance at C-6 of the fulvene. On the basis of mechanistic studies, optimal conditions have been developed for a one-pot synthesis of 1,2-dihydropentalenes using catalytic amounts of pyrrolidine.

1,2-Halogen migration in haloallenyl ketones: regiodivergent synthesis of halofurans.

Project description:Selective 1,2-iodine, bromine, and chlorine migration in haloallenyl ketones in the presence of Au catalyst has been demonstrated. It was found that, depending on the nature of the Au catalyst used, either selective bromine migration or hydrogen shift occurs, leading to the formation of 3- or 2-bromofurans, respectively. Halirenium intermediate was proposed for the unusual 1,2-halogen migration. This cascade transformation allows for mild and efficient synthesis of various types of 3-halofurans.

Halogen-sodium exchange enables efficient access to organosodium compounds.

Project description:With sodium being the most abundant alkali metal on Earth, organosodium compounds are an attractive choice for sustainable chemical synthesis. However, organosodium compounds are rarely used-and are overshadowed by organolithium compounds-because of a lack of convenient and efficient preparation methods. Here we report a halogen-sodium exchange method to prepare a large variety of (hetero)aryl- and alkenylsodium compounds including tri- and tetrasodioarenes, many of them previously inaccessible by other methods. The key discovery is the use of a primary and bulky alkylsodium lacking β-hydrogens, which retards undesired reactions, such as Wurtz-Fittig coupling and β-hydrogen elimination, and enables efficient halogen-sodium exchange. The alkylsodium is readily prepared in situ from neopentyl chloride and an easy-to-handle sodium dispersion. We believe that the efficiency, generality, and convenience of the present method will contribute to the widespread use of organosodium in organic synthesis, ultimately contributing to the development of sustainable organic synthesis by rivalling the currently dominant organolithium reagents.

Successive Diels-Alder Cycloadditions of Cyclopentadiene to [10]CPP⊃C<sub>60</sub>: A Computational Study.

Project description:Fullerenes have potential applications in many fields. To reach their full potential, fullerenes have to be functionalized. One of the most common reactions used to functionalize fullerenes is the Diels-Alder cycloaddition. In this case, it is important to control the regioselectivity of the cycloaddition during the formation of higher adducts. In C60, successive Diels-Alder cycloadditions lead to the Th-symmetric hexakisadduct. In this work, we explore computationally using density functional theory (DFT) how the presence of a [10]cycloparaphenylene ring encapsulating C60 ([10]CPP⊃C60) affects the regioselectivity of multiple additions to C60. Our results show that the presence of the [10]CPP ring changes the preferred sites of cycloaddition compared to free C60 and leads to the formation of the tetrakisadduct. Somewhat surprisingly, our calculations predict formation of this particular tetrakisadduct to be more favored in [10]CPP⊃C60 than in free C60.

Isostructural Halogen Exchange and Halogen Bonds: The Case of <i>N</i>-(4-Halogenobenzyl)-3-halogenopyridinium Halogenides.

Project description:Six N-(4-halogenobenzyl)-3-halogenopyridinium cations were prepared by reacting meta-halogenopyridines (Cl, Br, and I) with (4-halogenobenzyl) bromides (Br and I) and were isolated as bromide salts, which were further used to obtain iodides and chlorides. Sixteen compounds (out of 18 possible cation/anion combinations) were obtained; two crystallized as hydrates and 14 as solvent free salts, 11 of which belonged to one isostructural series and 3 to another. All crystal structures comprise halogen-bonded chains, with the anion as an acceptor of two halogen bonds, with the pyridine and the benzyl halogen substituents of two neighboring cations. The halogen bonds with the pyridine halogen show a linear correlation between the relative halogen bond length and angle, which primarily depend on the donor halogen. The parameters of the other halogen bonds vary with all three halogens, indicating that the former halogen bond is the dominant interaction. This is also in accord with the calculated electrostatic potential in the σ-holes of the halogens and the thermal properties of the solids. The second isostructural group comprises combinations of the best halogen bond donors and acceptors, and features a more favorable halogen bond geometry of the dominant halogen bond, reaffirming its significance as the main factor in determining the structure.

Modulating Room-Temperature Phosphorescence-To-Phosphorescence Mechanochromism by Halogen Exchange.

Project description:Modulating the stimulus-responsiveness of a luminescent crystal is challenging owing to the complex interdependent nature of its controlling factors, such as molecular structure, molecular conformation, crystal packing, optical properties, and amorphization behavior. Herein, we demonstrate a halogen-exchange approach that disentangles this problem, thereby realizing the modulation of room-temperature phosphorescence-to-phosphorescence mechanochromism. Replacing the bromine atoms in a brominated thienyl diketone with chlorine atoms afforded isostructural crystals; i.e., molecules with different halogen atoms exhibited the same molecular conformation and crystal packing. Consequently, amorphization behavior toward mechanical stimulation was also the same, and the phosphorescence of amorphous states originated from the same conformer of each diketone. In contrast, the phosphorescence properties of each conformer were modulated differently, which is ascribable to heavy atom effects, resulting in the modulation of the mechanochromism. Thus, halogen exchange is a promising approach for modulating the stimulus-responsive photofunctions of crystals involving spin-forbidden processes.

Steering Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Molecular Nanostructures via Halogen Exchange.

Project description:In the field of self-assembly, the quest for gaining control over the supramolecular architecture without affecting the functionality of the individual molecular building blocks is intrinsically challenging. By using a combination of synthetic chemistry, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, optical absorption measurements, and exciton theory, we demonstrate that halogen exchange in carbocyanine dye molecules allows for fine-tuning the diameter of the self-assembled nanotubes formed by these molecules, while hardly affecting the molecular packing determined by hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions. Our findings open a unique way to study size effects on the optical properties and exciton dynamics of self-assembled systems under well-controlled conditions.
