Creating a Program for Junior Faculty Professional Development: A Tool Kit.

ABSTRACT:

Introduction

Junior academic faculty must balance increasing clinical responsibilities whilst maintaining academic portfolios aimed at promotion. Our goal was to design, implement, and evaluate a curriculum for career development amongst junior faculty in pediatrics.

Methods

Following the Kern method of curriculum development, we performed a needs assessment of junior faculty via an electronic survey to identify areas for career development. We created objectives based on the themes identified and developed associated learning activities, including (1) a monthly seminar series, (2) an orientation day for new hires, and (3) a formal mentoring program for junior faculty. At the end of each academic year, we sent electronic surveys to junior faculty participants for program evaluation.

Results

Of 50 junior faculty, 60% completed the initial needs assessment and identified a need for a forum for junior faculty orientation, career development, and formal mentoring. Local experts were solicited to create and lead a 10-part seminar series to cover topics such as CV review, promotions, and mentoring. Twenty-one junior faculty (42%) who did not already have established mentors joined the formal mentoring program. All incoming new junior faculty attended a formal orientation day held annually. At the end of the first year, a follow-up survey for program evaluation was completed by 17 (27%) junior faculty, and 98% reported satisfaction with the learning activities.

Discussion

We successfully developed and implemented a junior faculty career development program at our institution that can be replicated at other institutions.

Project description:BackgroundWomen comprise 28% of faculty in academic departments of emergency medicine (EM) and 11% of academic chairs. Professional development programs for women are key to career success and to prevent pipeline attrition. Within emergency medicine, there is a paucity of outcomes-level data for such programs.ObjectivesWe aim to measure the impact of a novel structured professional development curriculum and mentorship group (Resident and Faculty Female Tribe, or RAFFT) within an academic department of EM.MethodsThis prospective single-center curriculum implementation and evaluation was conducted in the academic year 2020-2021. A planning group identified potential curricular topics using an iterative Delphi process. We developed a 10-session longitudinal curriculum; a postcurriculum survey was conducted to assess the perceived benefit of the program in four domains.ResultsA total of 76% of 51 eligible women attended at least one session; for this project we analyzed the 24 participants (47%) who attended at least one session and completed both the pre- and the postsurvey. The majority of participants reported a positive benefit, which aligned with their expectations in the following areas: professional development (79.2%), job satisfaction (83.3%), professional well-being (70.8%), and personal well-being (79.2%). Resident physicians more often reported less benefit than expected compared to fellow/faculty physicians. Median perceived impact on career choice and trajectory was positive for all respondents.ConclusionsSuccess of this professional development program was measured through a perceived benefit aligning with participant expectations, a positive impact on career choice and career trajectory for participants in each career stage, and a high level of engagement in this voluntary program. Recommendations for the successful implementation of professional development programs include early engagement of stakeholders, the application of data from a program-specific needs assessment, early dissemination of session dates to allow for protected time off, and structured discussions with appropriate identification of presession resources.

Project description:BackgroundAccrual to oncology clinical trials remains a challenge, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. For late phase clinical trials funded by the National Cancer Institute, the development of these research protocols is a resource-intensive process; however, mechanisms to optimize patient accrual after trial activation are underdeveloped across the National Clinical Trial Network (NCTN). Low patient accrual can lead to the premature closure of clinical trials and can ultimately delay the availability of new, potentially life-saving therapies in oncology.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to formally create an easily implemented tool kit of resources for investigators of oncology clinical trials within the NCTN, specifically the NRG Oncology cooperative group, in order to optimize patient accrual.MethodsNRG Oncology sought to formally develop a tool kit of resources to use at specific time points during the lifetime of NRG Oncology clinical trials. The tools are clearly described and involve the facilitation of engagement of the study principal investigator with the scientific and patient advocate community during the planning, activation, and accrual periods. Social media tools are also leveraged to enhance such engagement. The principal investigator (PI) tool kit was created in 2019 and thereafter piloted with the NRG Oncology/Alliance NRG-LU005 phase II or III trial in small-cell lung cancer. The PI tool kit was developed by the NRG Oncology Protocol Operations Management committee and was tested with the NRG/Alliance LU005 randomized trial within the NCTN.ResultsNRG Oncology/Alliance NRG-LU005 has seen robust enrollment, currently 127% of the projected accrual. Importantly, many of the tool kit elements are already being used in ongoing NRG Oncology trials, with 56% of active NRG trials using at least one element of the PI tool kit and all in-development trials offered the resource. This underscores the feasibility and potential benefits of deploying the PI tool kit across all NRG Oncology trials moving forward.ConclusionsWhile clinical trial accrual can be challenging, the PI tool kit has been shown to augment accrual in a low-cost and easily implementable fashion. It could be widely and consistently deployed across the NCTN to improve accrual in oncology clinical trials.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT03811002; https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03811002.
