Study of CuO Nanowire Growth on Different Copper Surfaces.

ABSTRACT: Cupric oxide (CuO) nanowires were produced by thermal oxidation of copper surfaces at temperatures up to 450 °C. Three different surfaces, namely a copper foil as well as evaporation deposited copper and an application relevant sputtered copper film on Si(100) substrates were characterized ex-situ before and after the experiment. The development of oxide layers and nanowires were monitored in-situ using grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering. The number density of nanowires is highest for the sputtered surface and lowest for the surface prepared by evaporation deposition. This can be linked to different oxide grain sizes and copper grain boundary diffusions on the different surfaces. Small grains of the copper substrate and high surface roughness thereby lead to promoted growth of the nanowires.

Growth and Characterization of Graphene Layers on Different Kinds of Copper Surfaces.

Project description:Graphene films were grown by chemical vapor deposition on Cu foil. The obtained samples were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron back-scatter diffraction. We discuss the time-dependent changes in the samples, estimate the thickness of emerging Cu2O beneath the graphene and check the orientation-dependent affinity to oxidation of distinct Cu grains, which also governs the manner in which the initial strong Cu-graphene coupling and strain in the graphene lattice is released. Effects of electropolishing on the quality and the Raman response of the grown graphene layers are studied by microtexture polarization analysis. The obtained data are compared with the Raman signal of graphene after transfer on glass substrate revealing the complex interaction of graphene with the Cu substrate.

Construction of Hierarchical CuO/Cu₂O@NiCo₂S₄ Nanowire Arrays on Copper Foam for High Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes.

Project description:Hierarchical copper oxide @ ternary nickel cobalt sulfide (CuO/Cu₂O@NiCo₂S₄) core-shell nanowire arrays on Cu foam have been successfully constructed by a facile two-step strategy. Vertically aligned CuO/Cu₂O nanowire arrays are firstly grown on Cu foam by one-step thermal oxidation of Cu foam, followed by electrodeposition of NiCo₂S₄ nanosheets on the surface of CuO/Cu₂O nanowires to form the CuO/Cu₂O@NiCo₂S₄ core-shell nanostructures. Structural and morphological characterizations indicate that the average thickness of the NiCo₂S₄ nanosheets is ~20 nm and the diameter of CuO/Cu₂O core is ~50 nm. Electrochemical properties of the hierarchical composites as integrated binder-free electrodes for supercapacitor were evaluated by various electrochemical methods. The hierarchical composite electrodes could achieve ultrahigh specific capacitance of 3.186 F cm-2 at 10 mA cm-2, good rate capability (82.06% capacitance retention at the current density from 2 to 50 mA cm-2) and excellent cycling stability, with capacitance retention of 96.73% after 2000 cycles at 10 mA cm-2. These results demonstrate the significance of optimized design and fabrication of electrode materials with more sufficient electrolyte-electrode interface, robust structural integrity and fast ion/electron transfer.

Hydrogen evolution from silicon nanowire surfaces.

Project description:This paper presents the study on the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of the silicon nanowire (SiNW)-based surfaces. Large-area SiNWs with different lengths were fabricated on the silicon surfaces by a cost effective and scalable wet-etching method. The SiNW-based surfaces promoted the photoelectrocatalytical performance of the electrodes due to the increased effective surface area for electrolyte diffusion and the fast release of hydrogen bubbles that formed on the electrodes. In addition, at different applied potentials, the nanostructured electrodes showed different behaviour that depended on the SiNWs' with different lengths and morphologies. For example, surfaces with longer SiNWs performed better in the low potential region, while surfaces with shorter SiNWs presented improved performance in the high potential region. The findings in this study provide new insights into designing electrodes with desired nanostructures for improved HER performance.

One-dimensional CuO nanowire: synthesis, electrical, and optoelectronic devices application.

Project description:In this work, we presented a surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT)-assisted approach to the synthesis of one-dimensional copper oxide nanowires (CuO NWs) for nanodevices applications. The as-prepared CuO NWs have diameter and the length of 50 ~ 200 nm and 5 ~ 20 μm, respectively, with a preferential growth orientation along [1 [Formula: see text] 0] direction. Interestingly, nanofield-effect transistor (nanoFET) based on individual CuO NW exhibited typical p-type electrical conduction, with a hole mobility of 0.129 cm(2)V(-1) s(-1) and hole concentration of 1.34 × 10(18) cm(-3), respectively. According to first-principle calculations, such a p-type electrical conduction behavior was related to the oxygen vacancies in CuO NWs. What is more, the CuO NW device was sensitive to visible light illumination with peak sensitivity at 600 nm. The responsitivity, conductive gain, and detectivity are estimated to be 2.0 × 10(2) A W(-1), 3.95 × 10(2) and 6.38 × 10(11) cm Hz(1/2) W(-1), respectively, which are better than the devices composed of other materials. Further study showed that nanophotodetectors assembled on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate can work under different bending conditions with good reproducibility. The totality of the above results suggests that the present CuO NWs are potential building blocks for assembling high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Aligned CuO nanowire array for a high performance visible light photodetector.

Project description:Recently, copper oxide (CuO) has drawn much attention as a promising material in visible light photodetection with its advantages in ease of nanofabrication. CuO allows a variety of nanostructures to be explored to enhance the optoelectrical performance such as photogenerated carriers scattering and bandgap engineering. However, previous researches neglect in-depth analysis of CuO's light interaction effects, restrictively using random orientation such as randomly arranged nanowires, single nanowires, and dispersed nanoparticles. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-high performance CuO visible light photodetector utilizing perfectly-aligned nanowire array structures. CuO nanowires with 300 nm-width critical dimension suppressed carrier transport in the dark state and enhanced the conversion of photons to carriers; additionally, the aligned arrangement of the nanowires with designed geometry improved the light absorption by means of the constructive interference effect. The proposed nanostructures provide advantages in terms of dark current, photocurrent, and response time, showing unprecedentedly high (state-of-the-art) optoelectronic performance, including high values of sensitivity (S = 172.21%), photo-responsivity (R = 16.03 A/W, λ = 535 nm), photo-detectivity (D* = 7.78 × 1011 Jones), rise/decay time (τr/τd = 0.31 s/1.21 s).

Copper Nitride Nanowire Arrays-Comparison of Synthetic Approaches.

Project description:Copper nitride nanowire arrays were synthesized by an ammonolysis reaction of copper oxide precursors grown on copper surfaces in an ammonia solution. The starting Cu films were deposited on a silicon substrate using two different methods: thermal evaporation (30 nm thickness) and electroplating (2 μm thickness). The grown CuO or CuO/Cu(OH)2 architectures were studied in regard to morphology and size, using electron microscopy methods (SEM, TEM). The final shape and composition of the structures were mostly affected by the concentration of the ammonia solution and time of the immersion. Needle-shaped 2-3 μm long nanostructures were formed from the electrodeposited copper films placed in a 0.033 M NH3 solution for 48 h, whereas for the copper films obtained by physical vapor deposition (PVD), well-aligned nano-needles were obtained after 3 h. The phase composition of the films was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis, indicating a presence of CuO and Cu(OH)2, as well as Cu residues. Therefore, in order to obtain a pure oxide film, the samples were thermally treated at 120-180 °C, after which the morphology of the structures remained unchanged. In the final stage of this study, Cu3N nanostructures were obtained by an ammonolysis reaction at 310 °C and studied by SEM, TEM, XRD, and spectroscopic methods. The fabricated PVD-derived coatings were also analyzed using a spectroscopic ellipsometry method, in order to calculate dielectric function, band gap and film thickness.

A Self-Supported CuO/Cu Nanowire Electrode as Highly Efficient Sensor for COD Measurement.

Project description:A self-supported CuO/Cu nanowire electrode (CuO/CuNWE), which was prepared by annealing Cu nanowires to form a porous Cu nanowire electrode (CuNWE) and then anodizing the as-prepared CuNWE in alkaline medium to generate Cu(OH)2 nanowires followed by calcination, was employed for chemical oxygen demand (COD) determination using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The structure and electrochemical behavior of the CuO/CuNWE were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and CV. The results indicated that the as-synthesized CuO/CuNWE, in which CuO nanowires with a length of several micrometers and a diameter of 100 to 300 nm could be found, was stable in alkaline medium and more electrocatalytically active for oxidizing a wide range of organic compounds in comparison with the CuNWE. Under optimized alkaline concentration and scan rate, the CuO/CuNWE exhibited a good performance for COD measurement, with a linear range of 5 to 1153 mg L-1, a sensitivity of 2.46× 10-2 mA /(mg L-1), and a detection limit of about 2.3 mg L-1. In addition, an excellent correlation was observed in COD values obtained by our method and the classic dichromate method (r = 0.9995, p < 0.01, n = 11). Finally, our method was successfully used to measure the COD values in real water samples, showing great potential for practical application in water pollution control.

Improved in vitro blood compatibility of polycaprolactone nanowire surfaces.

Project description:There are a multitude of polymeric materials currently utilized to prepare a variety of blood-contacting implantable medical devices. These devices include tissue grafts, coronary artery and vascular stents, and orthopedic implants. The thrombogenic nature of such materials can cause serious complications in patients, and ultimately lead to functional failure. To date, there is no truly hemocompatible biomaterial surface. Nanostructured surfaces improve cellular interactions but there is a limited amount of information regarding their blood compatibility. In this study, the in vitro blood compatibility of four different surfaces (control, PCL; nanowire, NW; collagen immobilized control, cPCL; collagen immobilized nanowire, cNW) were investigated for their use as interfaces for blood-contacting implants. The results presented here indicate enhanced in vitro blood compatibility of nanowire surfaces compared control surfaces. Although there were no significant differences in leukocyte adhesion, there was a decrease in platelet adhesion on NW surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy images showed a decrease in platelet/leukocyte complexes on cNW surfaces and no apparent complexes were formed on NW surfaces compared to PCL and cPCL surfaces. The increase in these complexes likely contributed to a higher expression of specific markers for platelet and leukocyte activation on PCL and cPCL surfaces. No significant differences were found in contact and complement activation on any surface. Further, thrombin antithrombin complexes were significantly reduced on NW surfaces. A significant increase in hemolysis and fibrinogen adsorption was identified on PCL surfaces likely caused by its hydrophobic surface. This work shows the improved blood-compatibility of nanostructured surfaces, identifying this specific nanoarchitecture as a potential interface for promoting the long-term success of blood-contacting biomaterials.

One-step Green Fabrication of Antimicrobial Surfaces via In Situ Growth of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles.

Project description:Microorganisms such as pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses pose a serious threat to human health and society. Surfaces are one of the major pathways for the transmission of infectious diseases. Therefore, imparting antipathogenic properties to these surfaces is significant. Here, we present a rapid, one-step approach for practical fabrication of antimicrobial and antifungal surfaces using an eco-friendly and low-cost reducing agent, the extract of Cedrus libani. Copper oxide nanoparticles were grown in situ on the surface of print paper and fabric in the presence of the copper salt and extract, without the use of any additional chemicals. The morphology and composition of the grown nanoparticles were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The analysis revealed that the grown particles consist of mainly spherical CuO nanoparticles with an average size of ∼14 nm and its clusters with an average size of ∼700 nm. The in situ growth process enables strong bonding of the nanoparticles to the surface, resulting in enhanced durability against wear and tear. Moreover, the fabricated surface shows excellent growth inhibition ability and bactericidal activity against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as antifungal activity against Candida albicans, a common pathogenic fungus. The ability to grow copper oxide nanoparticles on different surfaces paves the way for a range of applications in wound dressings, masks, and protective medical equipment.

Improved catalytic combustion of methane using CuO nanobelts with predominantly (001) surfaces.

Project description:Through computational calculations, CuO(001) has been identified as an active surface for methane oxidation. Experimental validation with CuO nanobelts comprised of predominantly (001) surfaces has been performed and it is confirmed that the performance of such nanobelts is much higher than normal nanoparticles and nanowires. First principle calculations further clarified that two-coordinated oxygen plays a key role for methane adsorption and oxidation.
