ZIF-8-Derived Hollow Carbon for Efficient Adsorption of Antibiotics.

ABSTRACT: The harmful nature of high concentrations of antibiotics to humans and animals requires the urgent development of novel materials and techniques for their absorption. In this work, CTAB (Cetyltrimethyl Ammonium Bromide)-assisted synthesis of ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework)-derived hollow carbon (ZHC) was designed, prepared, and used as a high-performance adsorbent, and further evaluated by Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal adsorption experiments, dynamic analysis, as well as theoretical calculation. The maximum capacities of ZHC for adsorbing tetracycline (TC), norfloxacin (NFO), and levofloxacin (OFO) are 267.3, 125.6, and 227.8 mg g-1, respectively, which delivers superior adsorptive performance when compared to widely studied inorganic adsorbates. The design concept of ZIF-8-derived hollow carbon material provides guidance and insights for the efficient adsorbent of environmental antibiotics.

Hollow Co3O4@MnO2 Cubic Derived From ZIF-67@Mn-ZIF as Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors.

Project description:Hollow Co3O4@MnO2 cubic nanomaterials are synthesized by ZIF-67@Mn-ZIF sacrificial precursor through a facile thermal treatment. As a kind of supercapacitor electrode material, it demonstrates high performances, such as specific capacitance of 413 F g-1 at the current density of 0.5 A g-1; as the current densities raised from 0.5 to 10 A g-1 (20 times increasing), there is still ~41% retention of its initial capacitance. These satisfactory electrochemical properties should be put down to the hollow and porous structure and the relative higher BET surface area, which supplies more reactive sites for charge and discharge processes.

ZIF-67 Derived Co2VO4 Hollow Nanocubes for High Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitors.

Project description:In this work, a new type of Co2VO4 hollow nanocube (CoVO-HNC) was synthesized through an ion exchange process using ZIF-67 nanocubes as a template. The hollow nanocubic structure of the CoVO-HNC provides an abundance of redox sites and shortens the ion/electron diffusion path. As the electrode material of supercapacitors, the specific capacitance of CoVO-HNC is 427.64 F g-1 at 1.0 A g-1. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled using CoVO-HNC and activated carbon (AC) as electrodes. The ASC device attains an energy density of 25.28 Wh kg-1 at a high-power density of 801.24 W kg-1, with 78% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 10 A g-1.

ZIF-67-Derived NiCo-Layered Double Hydroxide@Carbon Nanotube Architectures with Hollow Nanocage Structures as Enhanced Electrocatalysts for Ethanol Oxidation Reaction.

Project description:The rational design of efficient Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) is the key to developing direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). Among these, the smart structure is highly demanded for highly efficient and stable non-precious electrocatalysts based on transition metals (such as Ni, Co, and Fe). In this work, high-performance NiCo-layered double hydroxide@carbon nanotube (NiCo-LDH@CNT) architectures with hollow nanocage structures as electrocatalysts for EOR were prepared via sacrificial ZIF-67 templates on CNTs. Comprehensive structural characterizations revealed that the as-synthesized NiCo-LDH@CNTs architecture displayed 3D hollow nanocages of NiCo-LDH and abundant interfacial structure between NiCo-LDH and CNTs, which could not only completely expose active sites by increasing the surface area but also facilitate the electron transfer during the electrocatalytic process, thus, improving EOR activity. Benefiting from the 3D hollow nanocages and interfacial structure fabricated by the sacrificial ZIF-67-templated method, the NiCo-LDH@CNTs-2.5% architecture exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation compared to single-component NiCo-LDH, where the peak current density was 11.5 mA·cm-2, and the jf/jb value representing the resistance to catalyst poisoning was 1.72 in an alkaline environment. These results provide a new perspective on the fabrication of non-precious metal electrocatalysts for EOR in DEFCs.

ZIF-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbons for Xe Adsorption and Separation.

Project description:Currently, finding high capacity adsorbents with large selectivity to capture Xe is still a great challenge. In this work, nitrogen-doped porous carbons were prepared by programmable temperature carbonization of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and ZIF-8/xylitol composite precursors and the resultant samples are marked as Carbon-Z and Carbon-ZX, respectively. Further adsorption measurements indicate that ZIF-derived nitrogen-doped Carbon-ZX exhibits extremely high Xe capacity of 4.42 mmol g(-1) at 298 K and 1 bar, which is higher than almost all other pristine MOFs such as CuBTC, Ni/DOBDC, MOF-5 and Al-MIL-53, and even more than three times of the matrix ZIF-8 at similar conditions. Moreover, Carbon-ZX also shows the highest Xe/N2 selectivity about ~120, which is much larger than all other reported MOFs. These remarkable features illustrate that ZIF-derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon is an excellent adsorbent for Xe adsorption and separation at room temperature.

Bimetallic ZIF-Derived Co/N-Codoped Porous Carbon Supported Ruthenium Catalysts for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Exploring the economical, powerful, and durable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly required for practical application. Herein, nanoclusters-decorated ruthenium, cobalt nanoparticles, and nitrogen codoped porous carbon (Ru-pCo@NC) are prepared with bimetallic zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZnCo-ZIF) as the precursor. Thus, the prepared Ru-pCo@NC catalyst with a low Ru loading of 3.13 wt% exhibits impressive HER catalytic behavior in 1 M KOH, with an overpotential of only 30 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2, Tafel slope as low as 32.1 mV dec-1, and superior stability for long-time running with a commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. The excellent electrocatalytic properties are primarily by virtue of the highly specific surface area and porosity of carbon support, uniformly dispersed Ru active species, and rapid reaction kinetics of the interaction between Ru and O.

Dual-ZIF-derived "reassembling strategy" to hollow MnCoS nanospheres for aqueous asymmetric supercapacitors.

Project description:Construction of delicate nanostructures with a facile, mild-condition and economical method is a key issue for building high-performance electrode materials. We demonstrate a facile and novel "reassembling strategy" to hollow MnCoS nanospheres derived from dual-ZIF for supercapacitors. The spherical shell's surface structure, thickness and Mn distribution were controlled by regulating the solvothermal reaction time. The chemical composition, phases, specific surface areas and microstructure were studied and the electrochemical performances were systematically estimated. As the unique low-crystalline and optimized hollow nanosphere structure contributes to increasing active sites, MnCoS nanospheres exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. The test results show that the specific capacitance increases with increasing solvothermal time, and the MCS with a 5 h reaction time exhibits optimal electrochemical properties with a high specific capacity of 957 C g-1 (1 A g-1). Furthermore, an MCS-5//AC asymmetric supercapacitor device delivers a specific energy as high as 36.9 W h kg-1 at a specific power of 750 W kg-1.

Enhanced Adsorption-Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants <i>via</i> a ZIF-67-Derived Co-N Codoped Carbon Matrix Catalyst.

Project description:Stable and efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants has been achieved via a ZIF-67-derived Co-embedded N-doped nanoporous carbon material catalyst (Co-N/C). The catalyst features a well-distributed structure, suitable specific surface area, and more active sites according to the various characterization analyses. The photocatalytic activity of Co-N/C was evaluated by the degradation of the target pollutant Rhodamine B (RhB). As a result, RhB could establish an adsorption-desorption equilibrium in the dark within 30 min and was thoroughly degraded into H2O and CO2 by Co-N/C under 500 W visible light irradiation in 40 min. Moreover, radical-quenching experiments and reactive oxygen species monitoring were performed to further probe the plausible photodegradation mechanism of RhB. Co-N/C is also appropriate for other alternative dyes and antibiotics affording ideal removal efficiencies. After the reaction, Co-N/C could be facilely separated by an external magnetic field and reused for eight reaction cycles without obvious deactivation of its photocatalytic properties. This study is expected to provide an instructive guideline for the design of efficient and recyclable composite photocatalysts derived from metal-organic frameworks for a broad range of environmental remediation processes.

Facile Preparation of Porous Carbon Derived from Pomelo Peel for Efficient Adsorption of Methylene Blue.

Project description:Pomelo peel waste-derived porous carbon (PPPC) was prepared by a facile one-step ZnCl2 activation method. The preparation parameters of PPPC were the mass ratio of ZnCl2 to pomelo peel of 2:1, carbonization temperature of 500 °C, and carbonization time of 1 h. This obtained PPPC possessed abundant macro-,meso-, and micro-porous structures, and a large specific surface area of 939.4 m2 g-1. Surprisingly, it had excellent adsorption ability for methylene blue, including a high adsorption capacity of 602.4 mg g-1 and good reusability. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic fitted with Langmuir and pseudo-second order kinetic models. This work provides a novel strategy for pomelo peel waste utilization and a potential adsorbent for treating dye wastewater.

Ni, Co-Embedded MOF-Derived N-Doped Bimetallic Porous Carbon for Adsorption-Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes and Antibiotics.

Project description:An efficient protocol for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes and antibiotics has been successfully established via MOF-derived (MOF = metal-organic framework) Ni, Co-embedded N-doped bimetallic porous carbon nanocomposites (NiCo/NC). Such a NiCo/NC nanocomposite features well-distributed structures, suitable specific surface areas, and more active sites determined by various characterization analyses. The catalyst exhibits higher photocatalytic performance and stability toward the liquid-phase degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation for 60 min, after the adsorption-desorption equilibrium and the thorough degradation into H2O and CO2. Radical quenching experiments further confirmed the dominant effect of electron holes h+ and superoxide radical anions ·O2- for the MB photodegradation process. NiCo/NC was also appropriate for the degradation of Rhodamine B, methyl orange, tetracycline hydrochloride, and norfloxacin. Moreover, NiCo/NC is robust, and its photocatalytic activity is basically maintained after 8 cycles. This work is expected to provide additional information for the design of MOF-derived carbon material with more excellent properties and lay the foundation for further industrial applications.

Hollow ZIF-8 Nanoworms from Block Copolymer Templates.

Project description:Recently two quite different types of "nano-containers" have been recognized as attractive potential drug carriers; these are wormlike filamenteous micelles ("filomicelles") on the one hand and metal organic frameworks on the other hand. In this work we combine these two concepts. We report for the first time the manufacturing of metal organic framework nanotubes with a hollow core. These worm-like tubes are about 200 nm thick and several μm long. The preparation is simple: we first produce long and flexible filament-shaped micelles by block copolymer self-assembly. These filomicelles serve as templates to grow a very thin layer of interconnected ZIF-8 crystals on their surface. Finally the block copolymer is removed by solvent extraction and the hollow ZIF-8 nanotubes remain. These ZIF-NTs are surprisingly stable and withstand purification by centrifugation. The synthesis method is straightforward and can easily be applied for other metal organic framework materials. The ZIF-8 NTs exhibit high loading capacity for the model anti cancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) with a pH-triggered release. Hence, a prolonged circulation in the blood stream and a targeted drug release behavior can be expected.
