ABSTRACT: This data article is the second component of the two-part study on the effects of high-resolution energy data on building life cycle assessments (LCAs) (Environmental performance assessment of the use stage of buildings using dynamic high-resolution energy consumption and data on grid composition, in press) [1]. The first part being the article serving as the main platform for the communication of the conclusions of the study, and this data article serving as Supporting information, as well as a means to present any results and analysis not included in the article. The focus is to present additional information strengthening the findings of the article, by showing data, graphs, and tables not included in the research article due to size limitations.

Data for electricity consumption, thermo-physical characteristics of residential buildings in Tehran.

Project description:This data article presents data related to 100 residential units in Tehran, Iran. For each building the ``average monthly electricity consumption'' data for 190 months has been provided. In addition, some physical characteristics of each building are given in the dataset. Presented data includes collected electricity end-users in residential units as well as thermos-physical characteristics of the buildings through a structured questionnaire. The physical characteristics covered in this study include; the number of floors, morphology of the yard and the ratio of the windows on each side window material, area, floor number of the studied residential unit, location in the city, cooling system, heating system, and so on. Information provided in this data article can be useful for research on energy prediction studies and also energy management strategies, and policy making to achieve sustainability targets. Having few datasets published on this topic, especially in hot and arid geographic regions, authors believe that the result of this data study can be generalized to the larger region of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The data consists of two parts; 1. Physical specifications of the building and 2. History of electricity consumption.

Forecasted datasets of electric vehicle consumption on the electricity grid of Spain.

Project description:The information included in this study were calculated on the basis of data provided by the Spanish electricity grid, for thirteen years between 2007 and 2019. This data includes: the average consumption demand on the Spanish electricity grid at national level, and its availability. Subsequently, the report looks at the number of electric vehicles that could be supported in the years 2020-2023, depending on the consumption demand and availably of the electricity grid for those future years. The data presented in the article refers to the research study: 'Electric vehicles in Spain: An overview of charging systems'[1] and 'Analysis of charging stations for electric vehicles in Spain' [2].

Monthly electricity consumption data at 1 km × 1 km grid for 280 cities in China from 2012 to 2019.

Project description:High spatio-temporal resolution estimates of electricity consumption are essential for formulating effective energy transition strategies. However, the data availability is limited by complex spatio-temporal heterogeneity and insufficient multi-source feature fusion. To address these issues, this study introduces an innovative downscaling method that combines multi-source data with machine learning and spatial interpolation techniques. The method's accuracy showed significant improvements, with determination coefficients (R2) increasing by 30.1% and 33.4% over the baseline model in two evaluation datasets. With this advanced model, we estimated monthly electricity consumption across 1 km x 1 km grid for 280 Chinese cities from 2012 to 2019. Our dataset is highly consistent with officially released electricity consumption of different industries (Pearson correlation coefficients within 0.83 - 0.91). Moreover, our data can reflect the electricity consumption patterns of different urban land uses compared to other datasets. This study bridges a significant gap in fine-grained electricity consumption data, providing a robust foundation for the development of sustainable energy policies.

Detection of Potentially Compromised Computer Nodes and Clusters Connected on a Smart Grid, Using Power Consumption Data.

Project description:Monitoring what application or type of applications running on a computer or a cluster without violating the privacy of the users can be challenging, especially when we may not have operator access to these devices, or specialized software. Smart grids and Internet of things (IoT) devices can provide power consumption data of connected individual devices or groups. This research will attempt to provide insides on what applications are running based on the power consumption of the machines and clusters. It is therefore assumed that there is a correlation between electric power and what software application is running. Additionally, it is believed that it is possible to create power consumption profiles for various software applications and even normal and abnormal behavior (e.g., a virus). In order to achieve this, an experiment was organized for the purpose of collecting 48 h of continuous real power consumption data from two PCs that were part of a university computer lab. That included collecting data with a one-second sample period, during class as well as idle time from each machine and their cluster. During the second half of the recording period, one of the machines was infected with a custom-made virus, allowing comparison between power consumption data before and after infection. The data were analyzed using different approaches: descriptive analysis, F-Test of two samples of variance, two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA). The results show that it is possible to detect what type of application is running and if an individual machine or its cluster are infected. Additionally, we can conclude if the lab is used or not, making this research an ideal management tool for administrators.

Monitoring of a micro-smart grid: Power consumption data of some machineries of an agro-industrial test site.

Project description:For the management of a (micro)-smart grid it is important to know the patters of the load profiles and of the generators. In this article the power consumption data obtained through a monitoring activity developed on a micro-smart grid in an agro-industrial test-site are presented. In particular, this reports the synthesis of the monitoring results of 5 loads (5 industrial machineries for crop micronization, corncob crashing and other similar processes). How these data were used within a monitoring and managing scheme of a micro-smart grid can be found in (E. Fabrizio, V. Branciforti, A. Costantino, M. Filippi, S. Barbero, G. Tecco, P. Mollo, A. Molino, 2017) [1]. The data can be useful for other researchers in order to create benchmarks of energy use input appropriate energy demand values in optimization tools for the industrial sector.

Open grid model of Australia's National Electricity Market allowing backtesting against historic data.

Project description:Rising electricity prices, concerns regarding system security, and emissions reduction are central to an energy policy debate under way in Australia. To better evaluate mechanisms that seek to address the nexus of engineering, economic, and environmental challenges facing the country's electricity system, we have constructed network and generator datasets describing the operation of Australia's largest transmission network. These data have been collated using open-source software, and are available under an open license. They include the geospatial locations of network elements, and have been designed to interface with a public database maintained by the Australian Energy Market Operator. This interface allows historic data, such as generator dispatch and regional load signals, to be integrated with market models. Interactive network maps, independent datasets, and power-flow models have been used to assess the completeness and functionality of the derived datasets. In the context of Australia, these data can be used to examine geospatial and temporal impacts of power injections from renewables. More generally, they allow market models to be benchmarked against realised outcomes.

Assembayeva et al. 2018). This data article presents information on network topology and characteristics, demand variation and distribution, technical and economic parameters for conventional and renewable generation, as well as availability time series, and imports and exports. The dataset is made publically available to allow for more and independent analysis of this emerging energy market.

Electricity consumption data of a student residence in Southern Africa.

Project description:The time-series dataset presented in this article was captured using a real-time energy monitoring device from a distribution panel of a student residence in Johannesburg, South Africa. The data was captured from April 2016 to January 2018. The data from the three conductors supplying the student residence with electricity was automatically aggregated and presented as a single data point. The granularity was at resolution levels of watt-minute and kilowatt-hour. A total of 13,966 hrs of data points was captured. The data has not been processed further. Hence, data consists of 1,209-hour of missing data points. In addition to the energy consumption data, 16 months of hourly data for wind speed, temperature and humidity of the closest weather station has been provided. The data will be useful in the formulation of mathematical models of electricity consumption that is most suitable for a student residence. Furthermore, the data provided in this article will encourage the development of a data-driven electricity consumption management strategy and policy formulation for student residences.

Active buildings: modelling physical activity and movement in office buildings. An observational study protocol.

Project description:IntroductionHealth benefits of regular participation in physical activity are well documented but population levels are low. Office layout, and in particular the number and location of office building destinations (eg, print and meeting rooms), may influence both walking time and characteristics of sitting time. No research to date has focused on the role that the layout of the indoor office environment plays in facilitating or inhibiting step counts and characteristics of sitting time. The primary aim of this study was to investigate associations between office layout and physical activity, as well as sitting time using objective measures.Methods and analysisActive buildings is a unique collaboration between public health, built environment and computer science researchers. The study involves objective monitoring complemented by a larger questionnaire arm. UK office buildings will be selected based on a variety of features, including office floor area and number of occupants. Questionnaires will include items on standard demographics, well-being, physical activity behaviour and putative socioecological correlates of workplace physical activity. Based on survey responses, approximately 30 participants will be recruited from each building into the objective monitoring arm. Participants will wear accelerometers (to monitor physical activity and sitting inside and outside the office) and a novel tracking device will be placed in the office (to record participant location) for five consecutive days. Data will be analysed using regression analyses, as well as novel agent-based modelling techniques.Ethics and disseminationThe results of this study will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations. Ethical approval was obtained through the University College London Research Ethics Committee (Reference number 4400/001).

Energy consumption analysis of power grid distribution transformers based on an improved genetic algorithm.

Project description:With the promotion of energy transformation, the utilization ratio of electrical power is progressively rising. Since electrical power is challenging to store, real-time production and consumption become imperative, imposing significant demands on the dependability and operational efficiency of electrical power apparatus. Suppose the load distribution among multiple transformers within a transformer network exhibits inequality. In such instances, it will amplify the total energy consumption during the voltage conversion process, and local, long-term high-load transformer networks become more susceptible to failures. In this article, we scrutinize the matter of transformer energy utilization in the context of electricity transmission within grid systems. We propose a methodology grounded on genetic algorithms to optimize transformer energy usage by dynamically redistributing loads among diverse transformers based on their operational status monitoring. In our experimentation, we employed three distinct approaches to enhance energy efficiency. The experimental findings evince that this approach facilitates swifter attainment of the optimal power level and diminishes the overall energy consumption during transformer operation. Moreover, it exhibits a heightened responsiveness to fluctuations in power demand from the electrical grid. Experimental results manifest that this technique can truncate monitoring time by 27% and curtail the overall energy consumption of the distribution transformer network by 11.81%. Lastly, we deliberate upon the potential applications of genetic algorithms in the realm of power equipment management and energy optimization issues.
