Selective photocatalytic conversion of methane into carbon monoxide over zinc-heteropolyacid-titania nanocomposites.

ABSTRACT: Chemical utilization of vast fossil and renewable feedstocks of methane remains one of the most important challenges of modern chemistry. Herein, we report direct and selective methane photocatalytic oxidation at ambient conditions into carbon monoxide, which is an important chemical intermediate and a platform molecule. The composite catalysts on the basis of zinc, tungstophosphoric acid and titania exhibit exceptional performance in this reaction, high carbon monoxide selectivity and quantum efficiency of 7.1% at 362 nm. In-situ Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggest that the catalytic performance can be attributed to zinc species highly dispersed on tungstophosphoric acid /titania, which undergo reduction and oxidation cycles during the reaction according to the Mars-van Krevelen sequence. The reaction proceeds via intermediate formation of surface methyl carbonates.

Selective photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of methane into carbon monoxide over Ag/AgCl@SiO<sub>2</sub>.

Project description:Design of active catalysts for chemical utilization of methane under mild conditions is of great importance, but remains a challenging task. Here, we prepared a Ag/AgCl with SiO2 coating (Ag/AgCl@SiO2) photocatalyst for methane oxidation to carbon monoxide. High carbon monoxide production (2.3 μmol h-1) and high selectivity (73%) were achieved. SiO2 plays a key role in the superior performance by increasing the lifetime of the photogenerated charge carriers. Based on a set of semi in situ infrared spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and electronic property characterization studies, it is revealed that CH4 is effectively and selectively oxidized to CO by the in situ formation of singlet 1O2 via the key intermediate of COOH*. Further study showed that the Ag/AgCl@SiO2 catalyst could also drive valuable conversion using real sunlight under ambient conditions. As far we know, this is the first work on the application of SiO2 modified Ag/AgCl in the methane oxidation reaction.

Design of core-shell titania-heteropolyacid-metal nanocomposites for photocatalytic reduction of CO<sub>2</sub> to CO at ambient temperature.

Project description:The photocatalytic conversion of CO2 not only reduces the greenhouse effect, but also provides value-added solar fuels and chemicals. Herein, we report the design of new efficient core-shell nanocomposites for selective photocatalytic CO2 to CO conversion, which occurs at ambient temperature. A combination of characterization techniques (TEM, STEM-EDX, XPS, XRD, FTIR photoluminescence) indicates that the CO2 reduction occurs over zinc species highly dispersed on the heteropolyacid/titania core-shell nanocomposites. These core-shell structures create a semiconductor heterojunction, which increases charge separation and the lifetime of charge carriers' and leads to higher electron flux. In situ FTIR investigation of the reaction mechanism revealed that the reaction involved surface zinc bicarbonates as key reaction intermediates. In a series of catalysts containing noble and transition metals, zinc phosphotungstic acid-titania nanocomposites exhibit high activity reaching 50 μmol CO g-1 h-1 and selectivity (73%) in the CO2 photocatalytic reduction to CO at ambient temperature. The competitive water splitting reaction has been significantly suppressed over the Zn sites in the presence of CO2.

Photocatalytic oxidation of methane over silver decorated zinc oxide nanocatalysts.

Project description:The search for active catalysts that efficiently oxidize methane under ambient conditions remains a challenging task for both C1 utilization and atmospheric cleansing. Here, we show that when the particle size of zinc oxide is reduced down to the nanoscale, it exhibits high activity for methane oxidation under simulated sunlight illumination, and nano silver decoration further enhances the photo-activity via the surface plasmon resonance. The high quantum yield of 8% at wavelengths <400 nm and over 0.1% at wavelengths ∼470 nm achieved on the silver decorated zinc oxide nanostructures shows great promise for atmospheric methane oxidation. Moreover, the nano-particulate composites can efficiently photo-oxidize other small molecular hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane and ethylene, and in particular, can dehydrogenize methane to generate ethane, ethylene and so on. On the basis of the experimental results, a two-step photocatalytic reaction process is suggested to account for the methane photo-oxidation.

Colloidal zinc oxide-copper(I) oxide nanocatalysts for selective aqueous photocatalytic carbon dioxide conversion into methane.

Project description:Developing catalytic systems with high efficiency and selectivity is a fundamental issue for photochemical carbon dioxide conversion. In particular, rigorous control of the structure and morphology of photocatalysts is decisive for catalytic performance. Here, we report the synthesis of zinc oxide-copper(I) oxide hybrid nanoparticles as colloidal forms bearing copper(I) oxide nanocubes bound to zinc oxide spherical cores. The zinc oxide-copper(I) oxide nanoparticles behave as photocatalysts for the direct conversion of carbon dioxide to methane in an aqueous medium, under ambient pressure and temperature. The catalysts produce methane with an activity of 1080??mol?gcat-1?h-1, a quantum yield of 1.5% and a selectivity for methane of >99%. The catalytic ability of the zinc oxide-copper(I) oxide hybrid catalyst is attributed to excellent band alignment of the zinc-oxide and copper(I) oxide domains, few surface defects which reduce defect-induced charge recombination and enhance electron transfer to the reagents, and a high-surface area colloidal morphology.

The Conversion of Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide by Nitrogenases.

Project description:Nitrogenases are the only known family of enzymes that catalyze the reduction of molecular nitrogen (N2 ) to ammonia (NH3 ). The N2 reduction drives biological nitrogen fixation and the global nitrogen cycle. Besides the conversion of N2 , nitrogenases catalyze a whole range of other reductions, including the reduction of the small gaseous substrates carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) to hydrocarbons. However, it remains an open question whether these 'side reactivities' play a role under environmental conditions. Nonetheless, these reactivities and particularly the formation of hydrocarbons have spurred the interest in nitrogenases for biotechnological applications. There are three different isozymes of nitrogenase: the molybdenum and the alternative vanadium and iron-only nitrogenase. The isozymes differ in their metal content, structure, and substrate-dependent activity, despite their homology. This minireview focuses on the conversion of CO and CO2 to methane and higher hydrocarbons and aims to specify the differences in activity between the three nitrogenase isozymes.

Parametric Studies of Titania-Supported Gold-Catalyzed Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide.

Project description:This paper remarks the general correlations of the shape and crystallinity of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) support on gold deposition and carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation. It was found that due to the larger rutile TiO₂ particles and thus the pore volume, the deposited gold particles tended to agglomerate, resulting in smaller catalyst surface area and limited gold loading, whilst anatase TiO₂ enabled better gold deposition. Those properties directly related to gold particle size and thus the number of low coordinated atoms play dominant roles in enhancing CO oxidation activity. Gold deposited on anatase spheroidal TiO₂ at photo-deposition wavelength of 410 nm for 5 min resulted in the highest CO oxidation activity of 0.0617 mmol CO/s.gAu (89.5% conversion) due to the comparatively highest catalyst surface area (114.4 m²/g), smallest gold particle size (2.8 nm), highest gold loading (7.2%), and highest Au⁰ content (68 mg/g catalyst). CO oxidation activity was also found to be directly proportional to the Au⁰ content. Based on diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, we postulate that anatase TiO₂-supported Au undergoes rapid direct oxidation whilst CO oxidation on rutile TiO₂-supported Au could be inhibited by co-adsorption of oxygen.

A facile ultrasonic-assisted fabrication of nitrogen-doped carbon dots/BiOBr up-conversion nanocomposites for visible light photocatalytic enhancements.

Project description:A highly efficient novel photocatalyst consisting of nitrogen-carbon dots (N-CDs) and three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical BiOBr was synthesized via a simple ultrasonic-assisted method and used for the degradation of hazardous dyes. Deposition of N-CDs onto the surface of BiOBr was confirmed through structure and composition characterizations. The N-CDs/BiOBr composites exhibited superior activity for organic contaminant degradation under visible light and the 1 wt% N-CDs/BiOBr composite showed the highest degradation rate, indicating that N-CDs/BiOBr composites have great potential for application in mitigating hazardous contaminants. The N-CDs played an important role in improving the photocatalytic performance, owing to the enhancement of up-converted photoluminescence behavior as well as the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers originating from the intimately contacted interface. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the experimental results.

Carbon/Graphene-Modified Titania with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity under UV and Vis Irradiation.

Project description:Laser synthesis was used for one-step synthesis of titania/graphene composites (G-TiO2 (C)) from a suspension of 0.04 wt% commercial reduced graphene oxide (rGO) dispersed in liquid titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP). Reference titania sample (TiO2(C)) was prepared by the same method without graphene addition. Both samples and commercial titania P25 were characterized by various methods and tested under UV/vis irradiation for oxidative decomposition of acetic acid and dehydrogenation of methanol (with and without Pt co-catalyst addition), and under vis irradiation for phenol degradation and inactivation of Escherichia coli. It was found that both samples (TiO2(C) and G-TiO2(C)) contained carbon resulting from TTIP and C2H4 (used as a synthesis sensitizer), which activated titania towards vis activity. The photocatalytic activity under UV/vis irradiation was like that by P25. The highest activity of TiO2(C) sample for acetic acid oxidation was probably caused by its surface enrichment with hydroxyl groups. G-TiO2(C) was the most active for methanol dehydrogenation in the absence of platinum (ca. five times higher activity than that by TiO2(C) and P25), suggesting that graphene works as a co-catalyst for hydrogen evolution. High activity under both UV and vis irradiation for decomposition of organic compounds, hydrogen evolution and inactivation of bacteria suggests that laser synthesis allows preparation of cheap (carbon-modified) and efficient photocatalysts for broad environmental applications.

Electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide and methane at an immobilized cobalt protoporphyrin.

Project description:The electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide and water into useful products is a major challenge in facilitating a closed carbon cycle. Here we report a cobalt protoporphyrin immobilized on a pyrolytic graphite electrode that reduces carbon dioxide in an aqueous acidic solution at relatively low overpotential (0.5 V), with an efficiency and selectivity comparable to the best porphyrin-based electrocatalyst in the literature. While carbon monoxide is the main reduction product, we also observe methane as by-product. The results of our detailed pH-dependent studies are explained consistently by a mechanism in which carbon dioxide is activated by the cobalt protoporphyrin through the stabilization of a radical intermediate, which acts as Brønsted base. The basic character of this intermediate explains how the carbon dioxide reduction circumvents a concerted proton-electron transfer mechanism, in contrast to hydrogen evolution. Our results and their mechanistic interpretations suggest strategies for designing improved catalysts.

CO2 Reduction Catalyzed by Nitrogenase: Pathways to Formate, Carbon Monoxide, and Methane.

Project description:The reduction of N2 to NH3 by Mo-dependent nitrogenase at its active-site metal cluster FeMo-cofactor utilizes reductive elimination of Fe-bound hydrides with obligatory loss of H2 to activate the enzyme for binding/reduction of N2. Earlier work showed that wild-type nitrogenase and a nitrogenase with amino acid substitutions in the MoFe protein near FeMo-cofactor can catalytically reduce CO2 by two or eight electrons/protons to carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4) at low rates. Here, it is demonstrated that nitrogenase preferentially reduces CO2 by two electrons/protons to formate (HCOO(-)) at rates >10 times higher than rates of CO2 reduction to CO and CH4. Quantum mechanical calculations on the doubly reduced FeMo-cofactor with a Fe-bound hydride and S-bound proton (E2(2H) state) favor a direct reaction of CO2 with the hydride ("direct hydride transfer" reaction pathway), with facile hydride transfer to CO2 yielding formate. In contrast, a significant barrier is observed for reaction of Fe-bound CO2 with the hydride ("associative" reaction pathway), which leads to CO and CH4. Remarkably, in the direct hydride transfer pathway, the Fe-H behaves as a hydridic hydrogen, whereas in the associative pathway it acts as a protic hydrogen. MoFe proteins with amino acid substitutions near FeMo-cofactor (?-70(Val?Ala), ?-195(His?Gln)) are found to significantly alter the distribution of products between formate and CO/CH4.
