Surface Plasmon-Enhanced Luminescence of CdSe/CdS Quantum Dots Film Based on Au Nanoshell Arrays.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, Au nanoshell arrays, serving as a photo-activated material, are fabricated via the combination of self-assembled nanosphere lithography and the thermal decomposing polymer method. The intensity and position of surface plasmonic resonance can be tuned from the visible region to the near-infrared region by changing the size of Au nanoshell arrays. When resonance absorption peaks of metal nanoparticles are matched with emission wavelengths of core-shell CdSe/CdS quantum dots, fluorescent intensity of CdSe/CdS quantum dots can be strongly enhanced. The physical mechanism of fluorescent enhancement is explained.

Luminescence Change of CdS and CdSe Quantum Dots on a Ag Film.

Project description:Enhanced luminescence of an emitter on a Ag film is usually ascribed to the resonant surface plasmons. In these studies, the solid cadmium sulfide (CdS) and cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dot/silver (QD/Ag) hybrids were prepared, and the luminescence characteristics of these QD/Ag hybrids were measured. It is found that the enhancement of the trap state emission (TSE) is related to the QD size. The TSE features of the annealed QD/Ag hybrids are insensitive to the morphology of the Ag film. We used the wet and dry methods to separate the QD and Ag components and found that the photoluminescence (PL) of the QD component was permanently changed from the initial state. The PL modification is ascribed to the Ag+ doping effect rather than the surface plasmons. This doping method uses pure Ag as the Ag+ ion source. In this case, though the CdS and CdSe QD/Ag hybrids are the solid state, the cation exchange between Ag+ and Cd2+ ions can still occur on the QD surface. Even a small amount of Ag can efficiently influence the luminescence of the QDs embedded in the poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix. A hypothetical model was proposed to explain the PL modification of the QD/Ag hybrid with and without annealing. Using this dry method for doping, the transparent luminescence label can be prepared easily, and the doped QDs can be further doped with Ag+ dopants.

Manipulating Charge Transfer from Core to Shell in CdSe/CdS/Au Heterojunction Quantum Dots.

Project description:The photophysics of charge-transfer and recombination mechanisms in a heterojunction structure of CdSe/CdS/Au quantum dots (QDs) are studied by temperature-dependent steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL (TRPL). We manipulate the charge transfer from core to shell surface by varying the tunneling barrier height resulting from temperature variation and the barrier width resulting from shell thickness variation. The charge-transfer process, which can be described by a tunneling transmission model, is manifested by two competitive recombination processes, an intrinsic exciton emission and a trap emission in the near-infrared (NIR) range. Our study establishes the photophysics foundation for the core/shell/metal application in photocatalyst and optoelectronics.

Dynamics of Intermittent Delayed Emission in Single CdSe/CdS Quantum Dots.

Project description:Bright and fast fluorescence makes semiconductor nanocrystals, or quantum dots (QDs), appealing for applications ranging from biomedical research to display screens. However, a few percent of their fluorescence intensity is surprisingly slow. Research into this "delayed emission" has been scarce, despite undesired consequences for some applications and potential opportunities for others. Here, we characterize the dynamics of delayed emission exhibited by individual CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs and correlate these with changes in the emission spectrum. The delayed-emission intensity from a single QD fluctuates strongly during an experiment of several minutes and is thus not always "on", implying that control over delayed emission may be possible. Periods of bright delayed emission correlate with red-shifted emission spectra. This behavior is consistent with exciton polarization by fluctuating electric fields due to diffusing surface charges, which have been known to cause spectral diffusion in QDs. Our findings thus provide a stepping stone for future efforts to control delayed emission.

Efficient red luminescence in Eu<sup>3+</sup> doped CdSe/CdS all-inorganic quantum dots shows great potential for wLEDs.

Project description:Complete inorganic quantum dots (QDs) CdSe/CdS:Eu3+ with full transmittance were proposed as red color converters for white light emitting diodes (wLEDs) using a facile one-step melt quenching method. TEM, XPS, and XRD were used to verify the successful nucleation of CdSe/CdS:Eu3+ QDs in silicate glass. The results indicated that the incorporation of Eu contributed to the nucleation of CdSe/CdS QDs in silicate glass, where the nucleation time of the CdSe/CdS:Eu3+ QDs rapidly decreased in 1 h compared with other inorganic QDs that took more than 15 h. CdSe/CdS:Eu3+ inorganic QDs exhibited bright and long-term stable red luminescence under both UV and blue light excitation; up to 53.5% quantum yield and 8.05 ms fluorescence lifetime were obtained by adjusting the Eu3+ concentration. Based on the luminescence performance and absorption spectra, a possible luminescence mechanism was proposed. Moreover, the application potential of the CdSe/CdS:Eu3+ QDs in wLEDs was studied by coupling the CdSe/CdS:Eu3+ QDs and commercial Intematix G2762 green phosphor on a InGaN blue LED chip. Warm white light (5217 K) with 89.5 CRI and 91.1 lm W-1 luminous efficacy could be achieved. Additionally, 91% of the NTSC color gamut was obtained, demonstrating the great potential of the CdSe/CdS:Eu3+ inorganic QDs as a color converter for wLEDs.

Ligand induced circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence in CdSe quantum dots.

Project description:Chiral thiol capping ligands L- and D-cysteines induced modular chiroptical properties in achiral cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe QDs). Cys-CdSe prepared from achiral oleic acid capped CdSe by postsynthetic ligand exchange displayed size-dependent electronic circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Opposite CPL signals were measured for the CdSe QDs capped with D- and L-cysteine. The CD profile and CD anisotropy varied with size of CdSe nanocrystals with largest anisotropy observed for CdSe nanoparticles of 4.4 nm. Magic angle spinning solid state NMR (MAS ssNMR) experiments suggested bidentate interaction between cysteine and the surface of CdSe. Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) calculations verified that attachment of L- and D-cysteine to the surface of model (CdSe)13 nanoclusters induces measurable opposite CD signals for the exitonic band of the nanocluster. The origin of the induced chirality is consistent with the hybridization of highest occupied CdSe molecular orbitals with those of the chiral ligand.

Engineering the spin-flip limited exciton dephasing in colloidal CdSe/CdS quantum dots.

Project description:We have measured the intrinsic exciton dephasing in high-quality zinc blende CdSe/CdS colloidal quantum dots in the temperature range from 5 to 170 K using a sensitive three-beam photon echo technique in heterodyne detection, which is not affected by spectral diffusion. Pure dephasing via acoustic phonons dominates the initial dynamics, followed by an exponential zero-phonon line dephasing. From the temperature dependence of the zero-phonon line dephasing, the exciton lifetime, and the exciton thermalization within its fine structure, we show that the zero-phonon line dephasing of the lowest bright state originates from the phonon-assisted spin-flip to dark exciton states. Importantly, we can control the dephasing by tailoring the exciton fine structure through its dependence on the dot core size and shell thickness, as expected from the spin-flip mechanism. By reducing the electron-hole exchange interaction with increasing core size and delocalization of the electron wave function in the quasi-type-II core/shell band alignment, we find the longest zero-phonon line dephasing time of ?110 ps at 5 K in dots with the largest core diameter (5.7 nm) and the thickest CdSe shell (9 monolayers) in the series studied.

Wavefunction Engineering of Type-I/Type-II Excitons of CdSe/CdS Core-Shell Quantum Dots.

Project description:Nanostructured semiconductors have the unique shape/size-dependent band gap tunability, which has various applications. The quantum confinement effect allows controlling the spatial distribution of the charge carriers in the core-shell quantum dots (QDs). Upon increasing shell thickness (e.g., from 0.25-3.25?nm) of core-shell QDs, the radial distribution function (RDF) of hole shifts towards the shell suggesting the confinement region switched from Type-I to Type-II excitons. As a result, there is a jump in the transition energy towards the higher side (blue shift). However, an intermediate state appeared as pseudo Type II excitons, in which holes are co-localized in the shell as well core whereas electrons are confined in core only, resulting in a dual absorption band (excitation energy), carried out by the analysis of the overlap percentage using the Hartree-Fock method. The findings are a close approximation to the experimental evidences. Thus, the understanding of the motion of e-h in core-shell QDs is essential for photovoltaic, LEDs, etc.

Covalent Protein Labeling and Improved Single-Molecule Optical Properties of Aqueous CdSe/CdS Quantum Dots.

Project description:Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have proven to be superior probes for single-molecule imaging compared to organic or genetically encoded fluorophores, but they are limited by difficulties in protein targeting, their larger size, and on-off blinking. Here, we report compact aqueous CdSe/CdS QDs with significantly improved bioconjugation efficiency and superior single-molecule optical properties. We have synthesized covalent protein labeling ligands (i.e., SNAP tags) that are optimized for nanoparticle use, and QDs functionalized with these ligands label SNAP-tagged proteins ?10-fold more efficiently than existing SNAP ligands. Single-molecule analysis of these QDs shows 99% of time spent in the fluorescent on-state, ?4-fold higher quantum efficiency than standard CdSe/ZnS QDs, and 350 million photons detected before photobleaching. Bright signals of these QDs enable us to track the stepping movement of a kinesin motor in vitro, and the improved labeling efficiency enables tracking of single kinesins in live cells.

Alternating layer addition approach to CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots with near-unity quantum yield and high on-time fractions.

Project description:We report single-particle photoluminescence (PL) intermittency (blinking) with high on-time fractions in colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QD) with conformal CdS shells of 1.4 nm thickness, equivalent to approximately 4 CdS monolayers. All QDs observed displayed on-time fractions > 60% with the majority > 80%. The high-on-time-fraction blinking is accompanied by fluorescence quantum yields (QY) close to unity (up to 98% in an absolute QY measurement) when dispersed in organic solvents and a monoexponential ensemble photoluminescence (PL) decay lifetime. The CdS shell is formed in high synthetic yield using a modified selective ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique that employs a silylated sulfur precursor. The CdS shell provides sufficient chemical and electronic passivation of the QD excited state to permit water solubilization with greater than 60% QY via ligand exchange with an imidazole-bearing hydrophilic polymer.

Combining HR-TEM and XPS to elucidate the core-shell structure of ultrabright CdSe/CdS semiconductor quantum dots.

Project description:Controlling thickness and tightness of surface passivation shells is crucial for many applications of core-shell nanoparticles (NP). Usually, to determine shell thickness, core and core/shell particle are measured individually requiring the availability of both nanoobjects. This is often not fulfilled for functional nanomaterials such as many photoluminescent semiconductor quantum dots (QD) used for bioimaging, solid state lighting, and display technologies as the core does not show the application-relevant functionality like a high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield, calling for a whole nanoobject approach. By combining high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), a novel whole nanoobject approach is developed representatively for an ultrabright oleic acid-stabilized, thick shell CdSe/CdS QD with a PL quantum yield close to unity. The size of this spectroscopically assessed QD, is in the range of the information depth of usual laboratory XPS. Information on particle size and monodispersity were validated with dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and compared to data derived from optical measurements. In addition to demonstrating the potential of this novel whole nanoobject approach for determining architectures of small nanoparticles, the presented results also highlight challenges faced by different sizing and structural analysis methods and method-inherent uncertainties.
