[La(? x -B x )La]- (x = 7-9): a new class of inverse sandwich complexes.

ABSTRACT: Despite the importance of bulk lanthanide borides, nanoclusters of lanthanide and boron have rarely been investigated. Here we show that lanthanide-boron binary clusters, La2B x -, can form a new class of inverse-sandwich complexes, [Ln(? x -B x )Ln]- (x = 7-9). Joint experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the monocyclic B x rings in the inverse sandwiches display similar bonding, consisting of three delocalized ? and three delocalized ? bonds. Such monocyclic boron rings do not exist for bare boron clusters, but they are stabilized by the sandwiching lanthanide atoms. An electron counting rule is proposed to predict the sizes of the B x ring that can form stable inverse sandwiches. A unique (d-p)? bond is found to play important roles in the stability of all three inverse-sandwich complexes.

Observation of highly stable and symmetric lanthanide octa-boron inverse sandwich complexes.

Project description:While boron forms a wide range of metal borides with important industrial applications, there has been relatively little attention devoted to lanthanide boride clusters. Here we report a joint photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical study on two octa-boron di-lanthanide clusters, Ln2B8- (Ln = La, Pr). We found that these clusters form highly stable inverse sandwich structures, [Ln-B8-Ln]-, with strong Ln and B8 bonding via interactions between the Ln 5d orbitals and the delocalized σ and π orbitals on the B8 ring. A (d-p)δ bond, involving the 5dδ and the antibonding π orbital of the B8 ring, is observed to be important in the Ln-B8 interactions. The highly symmetric inverse sandwich structures are overwhelmingly more stable than any other isomers. Upon electron detachment, the (d-p)δ orbitals become half-filled, giving rise to a triplet ground state for neutral La2B8 In addition to the two unpaired electrons in the (d-p)δ orbitals upon electron detachment, the neutral Pr2B8 complex also contains two unpaired 4f electrons on each Pr center. The six unpaired spins in Pr2B8 are ferromagnetically coupled to give rise to a septuplet ground state. The current work suggests that highly magnetic Ln…B8…Ln inverse sandwiches or 1D Ln…B8…Ln nanowires may be designed with novel electronic and magnetic properties.

Distinct electronic structures and bonding interactions in inverse-sandwich samarium and ytterbium biphenyl complexes.

Project description:Inverse-sandwich samarium and ytterbium biphenyl complexes were synthesized by the reduction of their trivalent halide precursors with potassium graphite in the presence of biphenyl. While the samarium complex had a similar structure as previously reported rare earth metal biphenyl complexes, with the two samarium ions bound to the same phenyl ring, the ytterbium counterpart adopted a different structure, with the two ytterbium ions bound to different phenyl rings. Upon the addition of crown ether to encapsulate the potassium ions, the inverse-sandwich samarium biphenyl structure remained intact; however, the ytterbium biphenyl structure fell apart with the concomitant formation of a divalent ytterbium crown ether complex and potassium biphenylide. Spectroscopic and computational studies were performed to gain insight into the electronic structures and bonding interactions of these samarium and ytterbium biphenyl complexes. While the ytterbium ions were found to be divalent with a 4f14 electron configuration and form a primarily ionic bonding interaction with biphenyl dianion, the samarium ions were in the trivalent state with a 4f5 electron configuration and mainly utilized the 5d orbitals to form a δ-type bonding interaction with the π* orbitals of the biphenyl tetraanion, showing covalent character.

A new class of half-sandwich ruthenium complexes containing Biginelli hybrids: anticancer and anti-SARS-CoV-2 activities.

Project description:In order to discover new dual-active agents, a series of novel Biginelli hybrids (tetrahydropyrimidines) and their ruthenium(II) complexes were synthesized. Newly synthesized compounds were characterized by IR, NMR, and X-ray techniques and investigated for their cytotoxic effect on human cancer cell lines HeLa, LS174, A549, A375, K562 and normal fibroblasts (MRC-5). For further examination of the cytotoxic mechanisms of novel complexes, two of them were chosen for analyzing their effects on the distribution of HeLa cells in the cell cycle phases. The results of the flow cytometry analysis suggest that the proportion of cells in G2/M phase was decreased following the increase of subG1 phase in all treatments. These results confirmed that cells treated with 5b and 5c were induced to undergo apoptotic death. The ruthenium complexes 5a-5d show significant inhibitory potency against SARS-CoV-2 Mpro. Therefore, molecule 5b has significance, while 5e possesses the lowest values of ΔGbind and Ki, which are comparable to cinanserin, and hydroxychloroquine. In addition, achieved results will open a new avenue in drug design for more research on the possible therapeutic applications of dual-active Biginelli-based drugs (anticancer-antiviral). Dual-active drugs based on the hybridization concept "one drug curing two diseases" could be a successful tactic in healing patients who have cancer and the virus SARS-CoV-2 at the same time.

New activation mechanism for half-sandwich organometallic anticancer complexes.

Project description:The Cp x C-H protons in certain organometallic RhIII half-sandwich anticancer complexes [(η5-Cp x )Rh(N,N')Cl]+, where Cp x = Cp*, phenyl or biphenyl-Me4Cp, and N,N' = bipyridine, dimethylbipyridine, or phenanthroline, can undergo rapid sequential deuteration of all 15 Cp* methyl protons in aqueous media at ambient temperature. DFT calculations suggest a mechanism involving abstraction of a Cp* proton by the Rh-hydroxido complex, followed by sequential H/D exchange, with the Cp* rings behaving like dynamic molecular 'twisters'. The calculations reveal the crucial role of pπ orbitals of N,N'-chelated ligands in stabilizing deprotonated Cp x ligands, and also the accessibility of RhI-fulvene intermediates. They also provide insight into why biologically-inactive complexes such as [(Cp*)RhIII(en)Cl]+ and [(Cp*)IrIII(bpy)Cl]+ do not have activated Cp* rings. The thiol tripeptide glutathione (γ-l-Glu-l-Cys-Gly, GSH) and the activated dienophile N-methylmaleimide, (NMM) did not undergo addition reactions with the proposed RhI-fulvene, although they were able to control the extent of Cp* deuteration. We readily trapped and characterized RhI-fulvene intermediates by Diels-Alder [4+2] cyclo-addition reactions with the natural biological dienes isoprene and conjugated (9Z,11E)-linoleic acid in aqueous media, including cell culture medium, the first report of a Diels-Alder reaction of a metal-bound fulvene in aqueous solution. These findings will introduce new concepts into the design of organometallic Cp* anticancer complexes with novel mechanisms of action.

Sandwich d/f Heterometallic Complexes [(Ln(hfac)3)2M(acac)3] (Ln = La, Pr, Sm, Dy and M = Co; Ln = La and M = Ru).

Project description:Sandwich d/f heterometallic complexes [(Ln(hfac)3)2M(acac)3] (Ln = La, Pr, Sm, Dy and M = Co; Ln = La and M = Ru) were prepared in strictly anhydrous conditions reacting the formally unsaturated fragment [Ln(hfac)3] and [M(acac)3] in a 2-to-1 molar ratio. These heterometallic complexes are highly sensitive to moisture. Spectroscopic observation revealed that on hydrolysis, these compounds yield dinuclear heterometallic compounds [Ln(hfac)3M(acac)3], prepared here for comparison purposes only. Quantum mechanical calculations supported, on the one hand, the hypothesis on the geometrical arrangement obtained from ATR-IR and NMR spectra and, on the other hand, helped to rationalize the spontaneous hydrolysis reaction.

Cationic Niobium-Sandwich and Piano-Stool Complexes.

Project description:The syntheses of the homoleptic bis(arene) niobium cations [Nb(arene)2 ]+ (arene = C6 H3 Me3 , C6 H5 Me) with 16 valence electrons and heteroleptic arene-carbonyl cations [(CO)Nb(arene)2 ]+ (arene = C6 H3 Me3 , C6 H5 Me) and [(arene)M(CO)4 ]+ (arene = C6 H3 Me3 , C6 H6 ) obeying 18 valence electrons are described. Stabilization of these complexes was achieved by using the weakly coordinating anions [Al(ORF )4 ]- or [F{Al(ORF )3 }2 ]- (RF = C(CF3 )3 ). The limits of two synthesis routes starting from neutral Nb(arene)2 (arene = C6 H3 Me3 , C6 H5 Me) or [NEt4 ][M(CO)6 ] (M = Nb, Ta) were investigated. All compounds were analyzed by single crystal X-ray determination, vibrational and NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations were executed to support the experimental data.

xRRM: a new class of RRM found in the telomerase La family protein p65.

Project description:Genuine La and La-related proteins group 7 (LARP7) bind to the non-coding RNAs transcribed by RNA polymerase III (RNAPIII), which end in UUU-3'OH. The La motif and RRM1 of these proteins (the La module) cooperate to bind the UUU-3'OH, protecting the RNA from degradation, while other domains may be important for RNA folding or other functions. Among the RNAPIII transcripts is ciliate telomerase RNA (TER). p65, a member of the LARP7 family, is an integral Tetrahymena thermophila telomerase holoenzyme protein required for TER biogenesis and telomerase RNP assembly. p65, together with TER and telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT), form the Tetrahymena telomerase RNP catalytic core. p65 has an N-terminal domain followed by a La module and a C-terminal domain, which binds to the TER stem 4. We recently showed that the p65 C-terminal domain harbors a cryptic, atypical RRM, which uses a unique mode of single- and double-strand RNA binding and is required for telomerase RNP catalytic core assembly. This domain, which we named xRRM, appears to be present in and unique to genuine La and LARP7 proteins. Here we review the structure of the xRRM, discuss how this domain could recognize diverse substrates of La and LARP7 proteins and discuss the functional implications of the xRRM as an RNP chaperone.

Theoretical Design of Novel Boron-Based Nanowires via Inverse Sandwich Clusters.

Project description:Borophene has important application value, boron nanomaterials doped with transition metal have wondrous structures and chemical bonding. However, little attention was paid to the boron nanowires (NWs). Inspired by the novel metal boron clusters Ln2B n - (Ln = La, Pr, Tb, n = 7-9) adopting inverse sandwich configuration, we examined Sc2B8 and Y2B8 clusters in such novel structure and found that they are the global minima and show good stability. Thus, based on the novel structural moiety and first-principles calculations, we connected the inverse sandwich clusters into one-dimensional (1D) nanowires by sharing B-B bridges between adjacent clusters, and the 1D-Sc4B24 and 1D-Y2B12 were reached after structural relaxation. The two nanowires were identified to be stable in thermodynamical, dynamical and thermal aspects. Both nanowires are nonmagnetic, the 1D-Sc4B24 NW is a direct-bandgap semiconductor, while the 1D-Y2B12 NW shows metallic feature. Our theoretical results revealed that the inverse sandwich structure is the most energy-favored configuration for transition metal borides Sc2B8 and Y2B8, and the inverse sandwich motif can be extended to 1D nanowires, providing useful guidance for designing novel boron-based nanowires with diverse electronic properties.
