Metal- and solvent-free synthesis of amides using substitute formamides as an amino source under mild conditions.

ABSTRACT: This study described an efficient and practical approach for amide synthesis. The reaction was conducted under metal- and solvent-free conditions at a mild temperature (40?°C) in air, and readily available formamides were used as an amino source. This reaction can be easily upgraded to the gram level with an excellent yield.

Project description:The halodecarboxylation of heteroarene carboxylic acids by treatment with N-bromosuccinimide or N-chlorosuccinimide was performed. This procedure provides a convenient route to synthetically useful mono-halogenated heteroarene intermediates such as halo-indoles, -aza-indoles, -indazoles and -aza-indazoles. The mild conditions employed and simple protocol provides an advantage over traditional halodecarboxylation procedures that require expensive and toxic metal catalysts, basic conditions, time-consuming intermediate isolation and elevated reaction temperatures.

Selective C-N σ Bond Cleavage in Azetidinyl Amides under Transition Metal-Free Conditions.

Project description:Functionalization of amide bond via the cleavage of a non-carbonyl, C-N σ bond remains under-investigated. In this work, a transition-metal-free single-electron transfer reaction has been developed for the C-N σ bond cleavage of N-acylazetidines using the electride derived from sodium dispersions and 15-crown-5. Of note, less strained cyclic amides and acyclic amides are stable under the reaction conditions, which features the excellent chemoselectivity of the reaction. This method is amenable to a range of unhindered and sterically encumbered azetidinyl amides.

Solvent-Free Coupling Reaction of Carbon Dioxide and Epoxides Catalyzed by Quaternary Ammonium Functionalized Schiff Base Metal Complexes under Mild Conditions.

Project description:A series of bifunctional Schiff base metal catalysts (Zn-NPClR, Zn-NPXH, and M-NPClH) with two quaternary ammonium groups were prepared for carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxide coupling reactions. The effects of the reaction variables on the catalytic activity were systematically investigated, and the optimal reaction conditions (120 °C, 1 MPa CO2, 3 h) were screened. The performances of different metal-centered catalysts were evaluated, and Co-NPClH showed excellent activity. This kind of bifunctional catalyst has a wide range of substrate applicability, excellent stability, and can be reused for more than five runs. A relatively high TOF could reach up to 1416 h-1 with Zn-NPClH as catalyst by adjusting reaction factors. In addition, the kinetic study of the coupling reaction catalyzed by three catalysts (Zn, Co, and Ni) was carried out to obtain the activation energy (Ea) for the formation of cyclic carbonates. Finally, a possible mechanism for this cyclization reaction was proposed.

Electrophilic Vinylation of Thiols under Mild and Transition Metal-Free Conditions.

Project description:The iodine(III) reagents vinylbenziodoxolones (VBX) were employed to vinylate a series of aliphatic and aromatic thiols, providing E-alkenyl sulfides with complete chemo- and regioselectivity, as well as excellent stereoselectivity. The methodology displays high functional group tolerance and proceeds under mild and transition metal-free conditions without the need for excess substrate or reagents. Mercaptothiazoles could be vinylated under modified conditions, resulting in opposite stereoselectivity compared to previous reactions with vinyliodonium salts. Novel VBX reagents with substituted benziodoxolone cores were prepared, and improved reactivity was discovered with a dimethyl-substituted core.

Light-Driven Metal-Free Direct Deoxygenation of Alcohols under Mild Conditions.

Project description:Hydroxyl is widely found in organic molecules as functional group and its deprivation plays an inevitable role in organic synthesis. However, the direct cleavage of Csp3-O bond in alcohols with high selectivity and efficiency, especially without the assistance of metal catalyst, has been a formidable challenge because of its strong bond dissociation energy and unfavorable thermodynamics. Herein, an efficient metal-free strategy that enables direct deoxygenation of alcohols has been developed for the first time, with hydrazine as the reductant induced by light. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, excellent functional group tolerance, and abundant and easily available starting materials, rendering selective deoxygenation of a variety of 1° and 2° alcohols, vicinal diols, and β-1 and even β-O-4 models of natural wood lignin. This strategy is also highlighted by its "traceless" and non-toxic by-products N2 and H2, as readily escapable gases. Mechanistic studies demonstrated dimethyl sulfide being a key intermediate in this transformation.

Controlled Growth of Dendrimer-Coated Gold Nanoparticles: A Solvent-Free Process in Mild Conditions.

Project description:Monodisperse dendrimer-coated gold nanoparticles with a spherical shape have been obtained by direct reduction of HAuCl4 with sodium borohydride in the presence of dodecanethiol as a stabilizer and subsequent functionalization by ligand exchange reaction with polybenzylic thiolated dendrons. The substitution pattern of the dendrimeric units plays a fundamental role in the rate of the functionalization exchange process and consequently conditions the size and the polydispersity of the NPs obtained. An ulterior growth process occurs by thermal stimuli (150 °C) in a solvent-free environment. This method, carried out in mild conditions, allows the formation of highly monodisperse gold NPs with different sizes for different time reactions, and we discuss the mechanisms involved in this process. Finally, we demonstrate the chemical composition and stability of our compounds by structural, thermal, and chemical characterization of the samples before and after thermal treatment.

Project description:An addition of H-phosphonates to aryl alkynes was realized under solvent- and metal-free conditions, affording Markovnikov-selective α-vinylphosphonates in moderate to good yields. A wide range of aryl alkynes could be applied for the reaction. A tentative mechanism of addition-substitution was proposed based on in situ 31P {1H} NMR studies.

Regiospecific N-Arylation of Aliphatic Amines under Mild and Metal-Free Reaction Conditions.

Project description:A transition metal-free N-arylation of primary and secondary amines with diaryliodonium salts is presented. Both acyclic and cyclic amines are well tolerated, providing a large set of N-alkyl anilines. The methodology is unprecedented among metal-free methods in terms of amine scope, the ability to transfer both electron-withdrawing and electron-donating aryl groups, and efficient use of resources, as excess substrate or reagents are not required.

Selective and metal-free epoxidation of terminal alkenes by heterogeneous polydioxirane in mild conditions.

Project description:Polydioxirane (PDOX) was prepared by the treatment of polysalicylaldehyde with Oxone and was found as a selective, highly efficient and heterogeneous reagent for epoxidation of alkenes which can be successfully isolated. This work also introduced a simpler, safer and milder way for epoxidation of alkenes with dioxirane groups than before. PDOX can be simply recovered from the reaction mixture by plain filtration and reused for eight runs without significant reactivity loss.

Project description:Multi-component synthesis 2-amino-3,5-dicarbonitrile-6-thio-pyridines has been developed by using the reaction of aldehydes, malononitrile, and thiophenols in the presence of a Zn (II) or a Cd(II) metal-organic framework (MOF) as the heterogeneous catalyst. This protocol tolerates different functional groups on the substrates and does not require the use of any organic solvent. Moreover, the Zn(II) and Cd (II) MOF catalysts can be recovered and reused for a number of runs without loss of activity.
