School contextual correlates of physical activity among a national adolescent sample.

ABSTRACT: Schools are an important context to promote adolescent physical activity (PA). However, following ecologic frameworks, little is known about the influence of multiple school contextual levels - environment and policy - on adolescent PA. This study aimed to examine associations of school neighborhood environment factors and state laws with PA, and the moderating effects of school neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) on these associations. Analyses used cross-sectional data from a national sample of middle (n?=?387) and high (n?=?591) school adolescents from the Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating study conducted in 2014. Outcomes included self-report school-time PA and active transport to/from school (ATS), and estimated minutes/week of school-related moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and total MVPA. Separate regression models for middle and high school respondents examined state laws (school PA or physical education (PE) time requirements) and school neighborhood factors (density, age, and commute times), and their interactions with school neighborhood SES, in relation to each PA outcome, adjusting for socio-demographic and psychosocial factors. The high school models showed strong PE laws (B[SE]: 0.3[0.1], p?=?0.02) and any PA law (B[SE]: 0.3[0.1], p?=?0.0003) were related to higher school-time PA, and shorter school neighborhood commute times were related to lower ATS (OR [95% CI]: 0.4 [0.2-0.7]). We found similar associations with estimated school-related MVPA. The middle school models showed no significant state law or school neighborhood main effects. Interactions with school neighborhood SES were not significant. Our findings provide further support for state laws to promote PA in school regardless of school neighborhood SES.

Project description:RATIONALE:Veterans, especially those using U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare, have poorer health than the general population. In addition, Veterans using VA services are more likely than non-VA users to be physically inactive. Little is known about physical activity correlates among Veterans. To identify targets for health promotion interventions, understanding barriers to and facilitators of physical activity in this population is critical. METHODS:This study examined individual-, social-, and perceived neighborhood-level associations of meeting weekly physical activity recommendations (150 min/week of combined leisure and transportation activity) based on the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) among N = 717 patients from VA Puget Sound, Seattle Division using a mailed survey sent 2012-2013 (response rate = 40%). Independent associations were identified with direct estimation of relative risks using generalized linear models (dichotomous outcome), and linear regression (continuous outcome), including variables associated in bivariate tests (p < .05). RESULTS:Most participants were male, Caucasian, and unemployed, and had an annual income ?$40,000. Over two-thirds (69.9%) reported meeting physical activity recommendations. Fewer days of limitations due to physical or mental health (Relative Risk (RR) = 0.99 per day; 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 0.98, 0.99; p = .01), others doing physical activity with the Veteran (RR = 1.18; 95% CI = 1.04, 1.33; p = .01), receiving ideas from others regarding physical activity (RR = 1.14; 95% CI = 1.01, 1.29; p = .03) and better perceived neighborhood aesthetics (RR = 1.14; 95% CI = 1.06, 1.24; p = .001) were associated with meeting physical activity recommendations. Findings were comparable for total weekly physical activity, but lower depression symptom severity was also associated with increased physical activity. CONCLUSION:This study identified individual and contextual correlates of physical activity among VA-using Veterans. Targeting these factors will be important in promoting physical activity in order to address the disproportionate disease burden facing U.S. Veterans. Existing VA interventions targeting physical activity may need to be adapted to account for the influence of contextual factors.

Project description:Background and Objective:Several reviews have summarised studies on secondary school students' moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in physical education (PE), but no systematic review with semiquantitative assessment has been conducted to specifically identify the correlates of their MVPA. This review aims to systematically summarise the existing literature, which investigated correlates of MVPA of secondary school students during their PE lessons. Methods:A systematic search using ERIC, SPORTDiscus, PubMed, PsycINFO, Academic Search Premier, and Web of Science was conducted to identify the correlates of the MVPA of secondary school students in PE. Studies were eligible if they were English published articles and examined the association with MVPA during secondary school PE lessons and cross-sectional and prospective longitudinal quantitative studies. Two reviewers independently examined the articles, assessed their methodological quality, and performed data extraction. The correlates of MVPA were synthesised and further assessed semiquantitatively. Results:Fifty-five studies were identified to correlate with secondary school students' MVPA in PE lessons. Further analysis only included 43 studies (78.2%) that were of medium and high quality by methodological quality assessment. Out of 54 variables identified from these medium and high-quality studies, 11 were consistently associated with the MVPA. Sex (boys), ethnicity (White), class gender (boys-only), PE activities (team games), lesson location (outdoors), expectancy beliefs, subjective task values, and enjoyment were consistently and positively associated with MVPA. Other variables, namely, class gender (girls-only), PE activities (movement activities), and lesson context (knowledge), were consistently and negatively related to MVPA. Conclusions:Interventions focusing on the consistent variables are needed to build active lesson time in PE. This review also provides insights for future research.

Project description:Background: Few older adults achieve recommended physical activity levels. We conducted a "neighborhood environment-wide association study (NE-WAS)" of neighborhood influences on physical activity among older adults, analogous, in a genetic context, to a genome-wide association study.Methods: Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) and sociodemographic data were collected via telephone survey of 3,497 residents of New York City aged 65 to 75 years. Using Geographic Information Systems, we created 337 variables describing each participant's residential neighborhood's built, social, and economic context. We used survey-weighted regression models adjusting for individual-level covariates to test for associations between each neighborhood variable and (i) total PASE score, (ii) gardening activity, (iii) walking, and (iv) housework (as a negative control). We also applied two "Big Data" analytic techniques, LASSO regression, and Random Forests, to algorithmically select neighborhood variables predictive of these four physical activity measures.Results: Of all 337 measures, proportion of residents living in extreme poverty was most strongly associated with total physical activity [-0.85; (95% confidence interval, -1.14 to -0.56) PASE units per 1% increase in proportion of residents living with household incomes less than half the federal poverty line]. Only neighborhood socioeconomic status and disorder measures were associated with total activity and gardening, whereas a broader range of measures was associated with walking. As expected, no neighborhood meaZsures were associated with housework after accounting for multiple comparisons.Conclusions: This systematic approach revealed patterns in the domains of neighborhood measures associated with physical activity.Impact: The NE-WAS approach appears to be a promising exploratory technique. Project description:The present study aimed to examine effects of motivational and social cognition constructs on children's leisure-time physical activity participation alongside constructs representing implicit processes using an extended trans-contextual model. The study adopted a correlational prospective design. Secondary-school students (N = 502) completed self-report measures of perceived autonomy support from physical education (PE) teachers, autonomous motivation in PE and leisure-time contexts, and social cognition constructs (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control), intentions, trait self-control, habits, and past behavior in a leisure-time physical activity context. Five weeks later, students (N = 298) self-reported their leisure-time physical activity participation. Bayesian path analyses supported two key premises of the model: perceived autonomy support was related to autonomous motivation in PE, and autonomous motivation in PE was related to autonomous motivation in leisure time. Indirect effects indicated that both forms of autonomous motivation were related to social cognition constructs and intentions. However, intention was not related to leisure-time physical activity participation, so model variables reflecting motivational processes did not account for substantive variance in physical activity participation. Self-control, attitudes, and past behavior were direct predictors of intentions and leisure-time physical activity participation. There were indirect effects of autonomous motivation in leisure time on intentions and physical activity participation mediated by self-control. Specifying informative priors for key model relations using Bayesian analysis yielded greater precision for some model effects. Findings raise some questions on the predictive validity of constructs from the original trans-contextual model in the current sample, but highlight the value of extending the model to incorporate additional constructs representing non-conscious processes.
