Synthesis and Characterization of Alkali Metal Ion-Binding Copolymers Bearing Dibenzo-24-crown-8 Ether Moieties.

ABSTRACT: Dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8)-bearing copolymers were synthesized by radical copolymerization using a DB24C8-carrying acrylamide derivative and N-isopropylacrylamide monomers. The cloud point of the resulting copolymers changed in aqueous solution in the presence of cesium ions. In addition, the ¹H NMR signals of DB24C8-bearing copolymers shifted in the presence of alkali metal. This shift was more pronounced following the addition of Cs? compared to Rb?, K?, Na?, and Li? ions due to recognition of the Cs? ion by DB24C8.

Project description:Interlocked molecular machines like [2]rotaxanes are intriguing aesthetic molecules. The control of the localization of the macrocycle, which surrounds a molecular axle, along the thread leads to translational isomers of very different properties. Although many moieties have been used as sites of interactions for crown ethers, the very straightforwardly obtained amide motif has more rarely been envisaged as molecular station. In this article, we report the use of secondary and tertiary amide moieties as efficient secondary molecular station in pH-sensitive molecular shuttles. Depending on the N-substitution of the amide station, and on deprotonation or deprotonation-carbamoylation, the actuation of the molecular machinery differs accordingly to very distinct interactions between the axle and the DB24C8.

Tridentate Phosphine Ligands Bearing Aza-Crown Ether Lariats.

Project description:Crown ethers are useful macrocycles that act as size-selective binding sites for alkali metals. These frameworks have been incorporated into a number of macromolecular assemblies that use simple cations as reporters and/or activity triggers. Incorporating crown ethers into secondary coordination sphere ligand frameworks for transition metal chemistry will lead to new potential methods for controlling bond formation steps, and routes that couple traditional ligand frameworks with these moieties are highly desirable. Herein we report the syntheses of a family of tridentate phosphine complexes bearing tethered aza-crown ethers (lariats) designed to modularize the variation of aza-crown size, lariat length, and distal phosphine substituents, followed by the synthesis and solid-state structures of Mo(III) complexes bearing cations in the pendent crown ethers.

Effect of Alkali Metal Cations on the Unilamellar Vesicle of a Squalene Bearing 18-Crown-6.

Project description:Squalene bearing 18-crown-6 was synthesized and formed unilamellar vesicles with a membrane thickness of about 6 nm and a diameter of about 0.32 μm. In the wake of the recognition of alkali metal cations, squalene unilamellar vesicles become larger as multilamellar vesicles or smaller while maintaining unilamellar vesicles depending on cations.

Binding selectivity of dibenzo-18-crown-6 for alkali metal cations in aqueous solution: A density functional theory study using a continuum solvation model.

Project description:BackgroundDibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) exhibits the binding selectivity for alkali metal cations in solution phase. In this study, we investigate the main forces that determine the binding selectivity of DB18C6 for the metal cations in aqueous solution using the density functional theory (DFT) and the conductor-like polarizable continuum model (CPCM).ResultsThe bond dissociation free energies (BDFE) of DB18C6 complexes with alkali metal cations (M+-DB18C6, M = Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) in aqueous solution are calculated at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p)//B3LYP/6-31 + G(d) level using the CPCM. It is found that the theoretical BDFE is the largest for K+-DB18C6 and decreases as the size of the metal cation gets larger or smaller than that of K+, which agrees well with previous experimental results.ConclusionThe solvation energy of M+-DB18C6 in aqueous solution plays a key role in determining the binding selectivity of DB18C6. In particular, the non-electrostatic dispersion interaction between the solute and solvent, which depends strongly on the complex structure, is largely responsible for the different solvation energies of M+-DB18C6. This study shows that the implicit solvation model like the CPCM works reasonably well in predicting the binding selectivity of DB18C6 in aqueous solution.

Evaluation of Performance of Functionalized Amberlite XAD7 with Dibenzo-18-Crown Ether-6 for Palladium Recovery.

Project description:Due to the increased demand for palladium, as well due to its reduced availability in nature, its recovery from diluted waste solutions becomes a necessity, and perhaps an emergency. As a result of economic and technological development, new materials with improved adsorbent properties that are more efficient for metallic ions' recovery were synthesized and introduced to market. The goal of this study was to obtain a new adsorbent material by functionalizing through impregnation a commercial polymeric support that was both inexpensive and environmentally friendly (Amberlite XAD7) with crown ether (di-benzo-18-crown-6-DB18C6). Crown ethers are known for their ability to form complexes within metallic ions, by including them inside of the ring, regardless of its atomic size. Adsorbent material was prepared by impregnation using the solvent-impregnated resin method (SIR). To highlight the presence of crown ether on the resin surface, a new synthesized material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The specific surface of the adsorbent material was also determined by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. Adsorbent performances of the prepared material were highlighted by kinetic, thermodynamic and equilibrium studies and a possible mechanism was also proposed. The influence of specific parameters for the adsorption process (contact time, temperature, Pd(II) initial concentration) on the maximum adsorption capacity was pursued.

Crownphyrins: Metal-Mediated Transformations of the Porphyrin-Crown Ether Hybrids.

Project description:Crownphyrins are hybrid macrocycles combining structural features of porphyrin and crown ethers. The molecular architecture renders them an intriguing class of hosts capable of binding neutral, and ionic guests. The presence of dynamic covalent imine linkages connecting the dipyrrin segment with the ether chain enables unusual coordination behavior of crownphyrins, as demonstrated by the formation of two classes of strikingly different complexes. The remarkable metal-mediated expansion to the helical [2+2] macrocyclic complex is reversible. The reaction of the figure-eight mercury(II) assembly with [2.2.2]cryptand results in ring contraction providing the metal-free crownphyrin macrocycle.

Ion shuttling between emulsion droplets by crown ether modified gold nanoparticles.

Project description:Selective unidirectional transport of barium ions between droplets in a water-in-chloroform emulsion is demonstrated. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) modified with a thiolated crown ether act as barium ion complexing shuttles that carry the ions from one population of droplets (source) to another (target). This process is driven by a steep barium ion concentration gradient between source and target droplets. The concentration of barium ions in the target droplets is kept low at all times by the precipitation of insoluble barium sulfate. A potential role of electrostatically coupled secondary processes that maintain the electroneutrality of the emulsion droplets is discussed. Charging of the GNP metal cores by electron transfer in the presence of the Fe(ii)/Fe(iii) redox couple appears to affect the partitioning of the GNPs between the water droplets and the chloroform phase. Processes have been monitored and studied by optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) and zeta potential. The shuttle action of the GNPs has further been demonstrated electrochemically in a model system.

Thermal Degradation Processes of Aromatic Poly(Ether Sulfone) Random Copolymers Bearing Pendant Carboxyl Groups.

Project description:Thermal degradation processes of poly(ether sulfone) random copolymers having different molar amount of diphenolic acid (DPA) units were studied by direct-pyrolysis/mass spectrometry, stepwise pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and thermogravimetric techniques. Results highlighted that thermal degradation processes occur in the temperature range from 370 to 650 °C, yielding a char residue of 32-35 wt%, which decreases as the mol% of DPA units rises. The pyrolysis/mass spectra data allowed us to identify the thermal decomposition products and to deduce the possible thermal degradation mechanisms. Thermal degradation data suggest that the decarboxylation process of the pendant acid moiety mainly occurs in the initial step of the pyrolysis of the copolymers studied. Successively, the scission of the generated isobutyl groups occurs in the temperature range between 420 and 480 °C. Known processes involving the main chain random scission of the diphenyl sulfone and diphenyl ether groups were also observed.

Synthesis and Alkali-Metal-Ion Complexation of P-Stereogenic Diphosphacrowns.

Project description:Phosphine is conformationally stable because of the high inversion energy barrier of the phosphorus atom, which allows the phosphorus atom to become a chiral center. Thus, enantiopure P-stereogenic 12-, 15-, 18-, and 21-membered aliphatic phosphines "diphosphacrowns" were synthesized from secondary P-stereogenic bisphosphine as a chiral building block. Their complexation behaviors with alkali metal ions are investigated in comparison with benzo-18-diphosphacrown-6 and benzo-18-crown-6. 15-, 18-, and 21-Membered diphosphacrowns captured alkali metal ions to form 1:1 metal complexes. Unique guest selectivity was observed, as diphosphacrowns encapsulated smaller alkali metal ions than common crown ethers; for example, 18-membered diphosphacrowns interacted more strongly with Na(+) than K(+). The difference in guest selectivity between diphosphacrowns and common crown ethers is speculated to result from the cavity size, owing to the large phosphorus atom as well as steric hindrance around the phosphine moiety.
