Project description:Although anxiety disorders (ADs) have been recognized as one of the most prevalent mental disorders in mainland China, the prevalence of ADs has not been reported until now. The lack of a consolidated and comparable review on the prevalence of ADs in mainland China necessitated this meta-analysis to measure the prevalence. To identify the relevant studies on ADs for the analysis, we searched published studies in electronic databases up to July 2015. The pooled prevalence in the overall population and the prevalences by gender and location were estimated. A total of 21 studies were included in the analysis. The pooled current/lifetime prevalences of ADs, generalized AD, non-specific AD, panic disorder, social phobia, agoraphobia, specific phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder were 24.47‰/41.12‰, 5.17‰/4.66‰, 8.30‰/6.89‰, 1.08‰/3.44‰, 0.70‰/4.11‰, 0.19‰/2.15‰, 0.63‰/19.61‰, 0.49‰/1.83‰, and 0.90‰/3.17‰, respectively. Subgroup analyses indicated that compared with males, females had a consistently significantly higher prevalence of ADs. However, no difference was observed between those in urban and rural areas. The pooled prevalence of ADs was relatively lower than those of some other countries. A higher prevalence of ADs in women than in men was commonly observed, whereas the prevalences in urban and rural areas were nearly the same.

Project description:IntroductionAcne, a very common skin disease, can result in psychological distress and sustain impairment in quality of life. Data on the prevalence of acne and the differences in gender, region and age are limited. The aim of this review is to estimate the prevalence of acne in Mainland China comprehensively and to quantify its association with gender, region and age.MethodsWe searched electronic databases with predetermined search terms to identify relevant studies published between 1 January 1996 and 30 September 2016. We pointed out repeated results using Note Express software and evaluated the studies for inclusion. Two independent reviewers extracted the data, followed with statistical analyses using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software version 2.0. A random effects model was adopted to calculate the overall pooled prevalence and to merge categories, including gender (males and females), region (Northern China and Southern China) and age (primary and secondary students: 7-17 years old; undergraduates: 18-23 years old; overall: no limits of age) for subgroup analyses. Logistic meta-regression analysis was used to clarify the associations between acne and the predictors age, gender and region using OR and their associated 95% CI.Results25 relevant studies were included in this meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence rates of acne were 39.2% (95% CI 0.310 to 0.479). The prevalence rates in different age groups were 10.2% overall (95% CI 0.059 to 0.171), 50.2% for primary and secondary students (95% CI 0.451 to 0.554), and 44.5% for undergraduates (95% CI 0.358 to 0.534); by gender, the prevalence rates were 35.7% for females (95% CI 0.275 to 0.448) and 39.7% for males (95% CI 0.317 to 0.482); and by region, the prevalence rates were 34.2% for Northern China (95% CI 0.242 to 0.458) and 46.3% for Southern China (95% CI 0.374 to 0.555). The associations between acne and the predictors age, gender and region were statistically significant.ConclusionsIn Mainland China, primary and secondary students exhibited higher prevalence rates than undergraduate students; males had higher prevalence rates of acne than females; and the prevalence rates of acne in Southern China was higher than Northern China.

Project description:BackgroundThe spread of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) is one of the major public health problems in the world. Surveillance of anti-TB drug resistance is important for monitoring TB control strategies. However, the status of drug-resistant TB in China has been reported inconsistently.MethodsWe systematically reviewed published studies on drug-resistant TB in China until March 31, 2011, and quantitatively summarized prevalence and patterns of anti-TB drug resistance among new cases and previously treated cases, respectively.ResultsNinety-five eligible articles, published during 1993-2011, were included in this review. The meta-analyses showed that the prevalence of drug-resistant TB in new cases was 27.9% (95% CI, 25.6%-30.2%) (n/N = 27,360/104,356) and in previously treated cases was 60.3% (95% CI, 56.2%-64.2%) (n/N = 30,350/45,858). Furthermore, in these two study populations, the prevalence of multiple drug resistance was found to be 5.3% (95% CI, 4.4%-6.4%) (n/N = 8810/101,718) and 27.4% (95% CI, 24.1%-30.9%) (n/N = 10,486/44,530) respectively. However, the results were found to be frequently heterogeneous (p for Q tests <0.001). The most common resistance was observed for isoniazid among both study populations. Different patterns of drug resistance were observed in the subgroup analysis with respect to geographic areas, drug susceptibility testing methods and subject enrollment time.ConclusionsResults of meta-analyses indicated a severe status of drug-resistant TB in China, which attaches an importance to strength TB prevention and control.

Project description:The prevalence of autism spectrum conditions (ASC) is 1% in developed countries, but little data are available from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. This study synthesizes evidence relating to the prevalence of ASC in these areas and assesses the effects of research methodology on prevalence estimates.Systematic literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Knowledge, China Web of Knowledge and Weipu databases, as well as relevant papers published from 1987 to 2011, reporting prevalence estimates of ASC or childhood autism in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Summary estimates of prevalence were calculated with a random effects model. The effects of research methodology on the prevalence estimates were assessed using a meta-regression model.There were 25 studies eligible for review, 18 of which were suitable for inclusion in a meta-analysis. Pooled prevalence of childhood autism was 11.8 per 10,000 individuals (95% confidence interval (CI): 8.2, 15.3) in mainland China. Pooled prevalence of ASC was 26.6 per 10,000 (95% CI: 18.5, 34.6) in three areas. Substantial heterogeneity was identified between studies (I2>75%). The prevalence estimate of childhood autism was most strongly associated with the choice of screening instrument. After adjustment for age group, the odds ratio for prevalence estimates when using the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) as the screening instrument compared with those using the Clancy Autism Behavior Scale (CABS) was 0.29 (95% CI: 0.12, 0.69), and 1.79 (95% CI: 0.70, 4.55; P= 0.20) when using the Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (CHAT) compared to the CABS.The available studies investigating the prevalence of ASC in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan have focused mainly on childhood autism rather than the whole spectrum. The prevalence estimates are lower than estimates from developed countries. Studies using more recently developed screening instruments reported higher prevalence than older ones. However, available studies have methodological weaknesses and therefore these results lack comparability with those from developed countries. Our findings indicate a potential under-diagnosis and under-detection of ASC in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and a need to adopt more advanced methods for research of ASC in these areas.

Project description:This meta-analysis of overweight and obesity (ow/ob) among children and adolescents in China from 1991 to 2015 provides a reference for promoting the healthy development of children and adolescents. The studies were retrieved from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and PubMed databases for the period from January 1991 to January 2018. The data were combined and analyzed, and the combined effect magnitude odds ratio and the 95% confidence interval were calculated. Publication bias was determined using Stata/SE12.0. We found that (1) the prevalence of ow/ob increased from 5.0% and 1.7% in 1991-1995 to 11.7% and 6.8% in 2011-2015, respectively, and the overweight rate was the greatest in 2006-2010; (2) from 1991 to 2015, the prevalence of ow/ob was greater in urban areas than in rural areas; (3) compared with girls, boys were more likely to be ow/ob; and (4) the prevalence rates of ow and ob were greater in infancy than in other growth stages, with values of 11.7% and 7.0%, respectively. The prevalence of ow/ob among Chinese children and adolescents showed significant differences based on region, sex, and age. An overall upward trend was observed that decreased slightly from 2011 to 2015.

Project description:AIMS/INTRODUCTION:Pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at a higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The aim of the present study was to estimate the pooled prevalence of GDM in mainland China according to International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups criteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS:We carried out a systematic review by searching both English and Chinese literature databases. Random effects models were used to summarize the prevalence of GDM in mainland China. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were carried out to address heterogeneity. Publication bias was evaluated using Egger's test. RESULTS:A total of 25 papers were included in the meta-analysis, involving 79,064 Chinese participants. The total incidence of GDM in mainland China was 14.8% (95% confidence interval 12.8-16.7%). Subgroup analysis showed that the age, bodyweight and family history of diabetes mellitus could significantly increase the incidence of GDM. CONCLUSIONS:To the best of our knowledge, this systematic review is the first to estimate the pooled prevalence of GDM among women in mainland China according to International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups criteria. The results of our systematic review suggest a high prevalence of GDM in mainland China, indicating that this country might have the largest number of GDM patients worldwide.

Project description:IntroductionThe epidemiologic characteristics of erectile dysfunction (ED) in mainland China remain incompletely understood.AimTo evaluate the overall prevalence and determine the severity of ED in mainland China.MethodsAn extensive database search was performed of PubMed, Embase, the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, the WanFang database, the Chinese Biological Medical Literature (CBM) database, and the Chongqing VIP using the following terms: erectile dysfunction, prevalence, epidemiology, epidemiological, and China. Study quality was assessed using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. Data were pooled for the random-effects model. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess potential bias.Main outcome measuresAll survey studies reporting on the prevalence of ED in mainland China were included. Data extraction was performed independently by two of the authors, and conflicts were resolved by another author.ResultsOf 2,155 retrieved articles, 25 were included in this meta-analysis with a total of 48,254 participants. The pooled prevalence of ED in men was 49.69% (95% CI = 39.29-60.10). The occurrence rates of ED in age groups younger than 30, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and at least 70 years were 20.86%, 25.30%, 40.48%, 60.12%, 79.10%, and 93.72%, respectively. The severity-specific prevalences of mild, moderate, and severe ED were 32.54%, 9.86%, and 13.97%, respectively. Moreover, the prevalences reported by different diagnostic methods were 14.19% for self-reports, 44.60% for the Chinese Index of Erectile Function, and 49.91% for the International Index of Erectile Function-5. The prevalence map based on a geographic information system showed an unequal geographic distribution.ConclusionED is highly prevalent in mainland China, and its prevalence increases with age. More high-quality surveys on ED with larger samples throughout mainland China are needed to confirm these findings.

Project description:BackgroundIn recent years, drug resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) particularly the emergence of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has become a major public health issue. The most recent study regarding the prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis in mainland China was a meta-analysis published in 2011, and the subjects from the included studies were mostly enrolled before 2008, thus making it now obsolete. Current data on the national prevalence of DR-TB is needed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the status of DR-TB epidemic in mainland China.MethodsA systematic review and meta-analysis of studies regarding the prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis in mainland China was performed. Pubmed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane central database, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database were searched for studies relevant to drug-resistant tuberculosis that were published between January 1, 2012 and May 18, 2015. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (V2.2, Biostat) software was used to analyse the data.ResultsA total of fifty-nine articles, published from 2012 to 2015, were included in our review. The result of this meta-analysis demonstrated that among new cases, the rate of resistance to any drug was 20.1% (18.0%-22.3%; n/N = 7203/34314) and among retreatment cases, the rate was 49.8% (46.0%-53.6%; n/N = 4155/8291). Multi-drug resistance among new and retreatment cases was 4.8% (4.0%-5.7%; n/N = 2300/42946) and 26.3% (23.1%-29.7%; n/N = 3125/11589) respectively. The results were significantly heterogeneous (p<0.001, I2 tests). Resistance to isoniazid was the most common resistance observed, and HRSE (H: isoniazid; R: rifampicin; S: streptomycin; E: ethambutol) was the most common form for MDR among both new and retreatment cases. Different drug resistance patterns were found by subgroup analysis according to geographic areas, subject enrolment time, and methods of drug susceptibility test (DST).ConclusionsThe prevalence of resistance to any drug evidently dropped for both new and retreatment cases, and multi-drug resistance declined among new cases but became more prevalent among retreatment cases compared to the data before 2008. Therefore, drug-resistant tuberculosis, particularly multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis among retreatment TB cases is a public health issue in China that requires a constant attention in order to prevent increase in MDR-TB cases.

Project description:China is the largest producer of tobacco worldwide. We assessed secular trends in prevalence of smoking, average cigarettes per day, mean age of initiation, and mortality attributable to smoking among the Chinese population between 1991 and 2011.Data came from the China Health and Nutrition Survey, conducted eight times between 1991 and 2011. A total of 83,447 participants aged 15years or older were included in this study. Trends in smoking were stratified by sex, age, and region (urban vs. rural).In 2011, 311 millions individuals were current smokers in China, with 295 million men and 16 million women, respectively. Between 1991 and 2011, the prevalence of current smoking decreased from 60.6% to 51.6% in men, and from 4.0% to 2.9% in women. However, during this period, the average number of cigarettes smoked per day per smoker increased from 15.0 to 16.5 in males, and from 8.5 to 12.4 in females. Further, age of smoking initiation decreased from 21.9 to 21.4years in men and from 31.4 to 28.4years in women. In 2011, 16.5% of all deaths in men and 1.7% in women were due to smoking. Between 1991 and 2011, the total number of deaths caused by smoking increased from 800,000 to 900,000.During the past 20years, a slight decrease in smoking prevalence was observed in the Chinese population. However, cigarette smoking remains a major cause of death in China, especially in men.

Project description:The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of colonic diverticulosis in mainland China. Sixty two thousand and thirty-four colonoscopies performed between Jan 2004 and Dec 2014 were reviewed retrospectively. The overall diverticulosis prevalence was 1.97% and out of this, 85.3% was right-sided. Prevalence does not change, significantly, on trends between the period 2004-2014. The peak of prevalence of diverticulosis was compared between the female group aged >70 years to the male one of 41-50 years. The other peak, otherwise, was compared between the group of 51-60 years with the right-sided diverticulosis to the one of >70 years with left-sided disease. Multivariate analysis suggested that the male gender could be a risk factor for diverticulosis in the group aged ≤70 years, but not for the older patients. In addition, among men was registered an increased risk factor for right-sided diverticulosis and, at the same time, a protective one for left-sided localization. In conclusion, the prevalence of colonic diverticulosis is very low in mainland China and it does not change significantly on trends over the time. Both the prevalence of this condition and its distribution changes according to the age and the genders. These findings may lead the researchers to investigate the mechanisms causing this kind of disease and its distribution in regard of the age and the gender.
