Mesoporous NH4NiPO4·H2O for High-Performance Flexible All-Solid-State Asymmetric Supercapacitors.

ABSTRACT: Nowadays, wearable energy storage devices have been growing rapidly, but flexible systems with both excellent cycling stability and decent flexibility are still challenging. In this work, a flexible all-solid-state NH4NiPO4·H2O//graphene supercapacitor with remarkable performance was successfully assembled. When cycled at a current density of 5 mA cm-2, the device delivered 121 mF cm-2, and showed good cycling stability after 3,000 cycles. Moreover, the all-solid-state NH4NiPO4·H2O//graphene supercapacitor also exhibit high mechanical flexibility with well-maintained specific capacitance, even under bending to arbitrary angles (up to 180°) and different weights (up to 50 g).

Facile, Scalable, Eco-Friendly Fabrication of High-Performance Flexible All-Solid-State Supercapacitors.

Project description:A highly porous freestanding supercapacitor electrode has been fabricated through a simple, inexpensive, bulk-scalable, and environmentally friendly method, without using any extra current collector, binder, or conducting additive. Benefiting from its unique micro-tubular hollow structure with a thin cell wall and large lumen, kapok fiber (KF) was used herein as a low-cost template for the successive growth of polypyrrole (PPy) through in situ chemical polymerization. This PPy-coated KF (KF@PPy) was blended with functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-CNTs) to form freestanding conductive films (KF@PPy/f-CNT) through a simple dispersion and filtration method. The hybrid film featuring the optimal composition exhibited an outstanding areal capacitance of 1289 mF cm-2 at a scan rate of 5 mV s-1. Moreover, an assembled all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitor featuring a PVA/H₂SO₄ gel electrolyte exhibited not only areal capacitances as high as 258 mF cm-2 (at a scan rate of 5 mV s-1) but also excellent cycling stability (97.4% of the initial capacitance after 2500 cycles). Therefore, this efficient, low-cost, scalable green synthesis strategy appears to be a facile and sustainable way of fabricating high-performance flexible supercapacitors incorporating a renewable cellulose material.

Solid-state high performance flexible supercapacitors based on polypyrrole-MnO2-carbon fiber hybrid structure.

Project description:A solid-state flexible supercapacitor (SC) based on organic-inorganic composite structure was fabricated through an "in situ growth for conductive wrapping" and an electrode material of polypyrrole (PPy)-MnO2 nanoflakes-carbon fiber (CF) hybrid structure was obtained. The conductive organic material of PPy greatly improved the electrochemical performance of the device. With a high specific capacitance of 69.3?F cm(-3) at a discharge current density of 0.1?A cm(-3) and an energy density of 6.16 × 10(-3)?Wh cm(-3) at a power density of 0.04?W cm(-3), the device can drive a commercial liquid crystal display (LCD) after being charged. The organic-inorganic composite active materials have enormous potential in energy management and the "in situ growth for conductive wrapping" method might be generalized to open up new strategies for designing next-generation energy storage devices.

All-solid-state high performance asymmetric supercapacitors based on novel MnS nanocrystal and activated carbon materials.

Project description:All-solid-state high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) are fabricated using ?-MnS as positive electrode and porous eggplant derived activated carbon (EDAC) as negative electrode with saturated potassium hydroxide agar gel as the solid electrolyte. The laminar wurtzite nanostructure of ?-MnS facilitates the insertion of hydroxyl ions into the interlayer space, and the manganese sulfide nanowire offers electronic transportation channels. The size-uniform porous nanostructure of EDAC provides a continuous electron pathway as well as facilitates short ionic transportation pathways. Due to these special nanostructures of both the MnS and the EDAC, they exhibited a specific capacitance of 573.9 and 396 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), respectively. The optimized MnS//EDAC asymmetric supercapacitor shows a superior performance with specific capacitance of 110.4 F g(-1) and 89.87% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles, a high energy density of 37.6 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 181.2 W kg(-1) and remains 24.9 Wh kg(-1) even at 5976 W kg(-1). Impressively, such two assembled all-solid-state cells in series can light up a red LED indicator for 15 minutes after fully charged. These impressive results make these pollution-free materials promising for practical applications in solid aqueous electrolyte-based ASCs.

High-performance quasi-solid-state flexible supercapacitors based on a flower-like NiCo metal-organic framework.

Project description:NiCo metal-organic framework (MOF) electrodes were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The flower-like NiCo MOF electrode exhibited an exciting potential window of 1.2 V and an excellent specific capacitance of 927.1 F g-1 at 1 A g-1. The flower-like NiCo MOF//activated carbon (AC) device delivered a high energy density of 28.5 W hkg-1 at a power density of 400.5 W kg-1 and good cycle stability (95.4% after 5000 cycles at 10 A g-1). Based on the flower-like NiCo MOF electrode, the asymmetric quasi-solid-state flexible supercapacitor (AFSC) was prepared and exhibited good capacitance retention after bending (79% after 100 bends and 64.4% after 200 bends). Furthermore, two AFSCs in series successfully lit up ten parallel red LED lights, showing great application potential in flexible and wearable energy storage devices.

Printable magnesium ion quasi-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors for flexible solar-charging integrated units.

Project description:Wearable and portable self-powered units have stimulated considerable attention in both the scientific and technological realms. However, their innovative development is still limited by inefficient bulky connections between functional modules, incompatible energy storage systems with poor cycling stability, and real safety concerns. Herein, we demonstrate a flexible solar-charging integrated unit based on the design of printed magnesium ion aqueous asymmetric supercapacitors. This power unit exhibits excellent mechanical robustness, high photo-charging cycling stability (98.7% capacitance retention after 100 cycles), excellent overall energy conversion and storage efficiency (?overall?=?17.57%), and outstanding input current tolerance. In addition, the Mg ion quasi-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors show high energy density up to 13.1 mWh cm-3 via pseudocapacitive ion storage as investigated by an operando X-ray diffraction technique. The findings pave a practical route toward the design of future self-powered systems affording favorable safety, long life, and high energy.

Electrochemically Synthesis of Nickel Cobalt Sulfide for High-Performance Flexible Asymmetric Supercapacitors.

Project description:A lightweight, flexible, and highly efficient energy management strategy is highly desirable for flexible electronic devices to meet a rapidly growing demand. Herein, Ni-Co-S nanosheet array is successfully deposited on graphene foam (Ni-Co-S/GF) by a one-step electrochemical method. The Ni-Co-S/GF composed of Ni-Co-S nanosheet array which is vertically aligned to GF and provides a large interfacial area for redox reactions with optimum interstitials facilitates the ions diffusion. The Ni-Co-S/GF electrodes have high specific capacitance values of 2918 and 2364 F g-1 at current densities of 1 and 20 A g-1, respectively. Using such hierarchical Ni-Co-S/GF as the cathode, a flexible asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is further fabricated with polypyrrple(PPy)/GF as the anode. The flexible asymmetric supercapacitors have maximum operation potential window of 1.65 V, and energy densities of 79.3 and 37.7 Wh kg-1 when the power densities are 825.0 and 16100 W kg-1, respectively. It's worth nothing that the ASC cells have robust flexibility with performance well maintained when the devices were bent to different angles from 180° to 15° at a duration of 5 min. The efficient electrochemical deposition method of Ni-Co-S with a preferred orientation of nanosheet arrays is applicable for the flexible energy storage devices.

VO2(B) nanobelts/reduced graphene oxide composites for high-performance flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors.

Project description:Vanadium oxide has attracted extensive attention for electrochemical capacitors due to its wide range of versatility. However, due to the relative poor conductivity and chemical stability of vanadium oxide, severe losses of capacitance often occur during charge and discharge processes. Herein, a free-standing vanadium dioxide (VO2(B)) nanobelts/reduced graphene oxide (VO2/rGO) composite film was fabricated by assembly of VO2(B) nanobelts and rGO for supercapacitors. The flexible rGO sheets and VO2(B) nanobelts intertwined together to form a porous framework, which delivered a 353 F g-1 specific capacitance at 1 A g-1, and after 500 cycles, the specific capacitance retention rate was 80% due to the enhanced conductivity of the VO2(B) nanobelts by rGO and increased transport of ions and electrons by the porous structures. An all-solid-state symmetrical supercapacitor was assembled from the VO2/rGO composites, which exhibited good energy storage performance with a maximum voltage of 1.6 V. The maximum power density is 7152 W kg-1 at the energy density of 3.13 W h kg-1, ranking as one of the highest power densities for reported materials. In addition, after 10000 cycles, it still has a specific capacitance retention rate of 78% at 10 A g-1.

Green Synthesis of Free Standing Cellulose/Graphene Oxide/Polyaniline Aerogel Electrode for High-Performance Flexible All-Solid-State Supercapacitors.

Project description:The cellulose/graphene oxide (GO) networks as the scaffold of free-standing aerogel electrodes are developed by using lithium bromide aqueous solution, as the solvent, to ensure the complete dissolution of cotton linter pulp and well dispersion/reduction of GO nanosheets. Polyaniline (PANI) nanoclusters are then coated onto cellulose/GO networks via in-situ polymerization of aniline monomers. By optimized weight ratio of GO and PANI, the ternary cellulose/GO3.5/PANI aerogel film exhibits well-defined three-dimensional porous structures and high conductivity of 1.15 S/cm, which contributes to its high areal specific capacitance of 1218 mF/cm2 at the current density of 1.0 mA/cm2. Utilizing this cellulose/GO3.5/PANI aerogel film as electrodes in a symmetric configuration supercapacitor can result in an outstanding energy density as high as 258.2 µWh/cm2 at a power density of 1201.4 µW/cm2. Moreover, the device can maintain nearly constant capacitance under different bending deformations, suggesting its promising applications in flexible electronics.

Three-dimensional skeleton networks of graphene wrapped polyaniline nanofibers: an excellent structure for high-performance flexible solid-state supercapacitors.

Project description:Thin, robust, lightweight, and flexible supercapacitors (SCs) have aroused growing attentions nowadays due to the rapid development of flexible electronics. Graphene-polyaniline (PANI) hybrids are attractive candidates for high performance SCs. In order to utilize them in real devices, it is necessary to improve the capacitance and the structure stability of PANI. Here we report a hierarchical three-dimensional structure, in which all of PANI nanofibers (NFs) are tightly wrapped inside reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheet skeletons, for high-performance flexible SCs. The as-fabricated film electrodes with this unique structure showed a highest gravimetric specific capacitance of 921 F/g and volumetric capacitance of 391 F/cm(3). The assembled solid-state SCs gave a high specific capacitance of 211 F/g (1 A/g), a high area capacitance of 0.9 F/cm(2), and a competitive volumetric capacitance of 25.6 F/cm(3). The SCs also exhibited outstanding rate capability (~75% retention at 20 A/g) as well as excellent cycling stability (100% retention at 10 A/g for 2000 cycles). Additionally, no structural failure and loss of performance were observed under the bending state. This structure design paves a new avenue for engineering rGO/PANI or other similar hybrids for high performance flexible energy storage devices.

Skeleton-Structure WS2@CNT Thin-Film Hybrid Electrodes for High-Performance Quasi-Solid-State Flexible Supercapacitors.

Project description:The purpose of this work is to explore the application prospects of WS2 as an active material in flexible electrodes. Since WS2 has similar disadvantages as other two-dimensional layered materials, such as easily stacking, it is essential to develop a three-dimensional structure for its assembly in terms of electrochemical performance. In addition, the low conductivity of WS2 limits its application as flexible electrode material. In order to solve these problems, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are introduced to improve the conductivity of hybrid WS2 materials and to construct a skeleton structure during WS2 assembly. Compared with pure CNTs and WS2, the WS2@CNT thin-film hybrid with a unique skeleton structure has a high specific area capacitance that reaches a maximum of 752.53 mF/cm2 at a scan rate 20 mV/s. Meanwhile, this hybrid electrode material shows good stability, with only 1.28% loss of its capacitance over 10,000 cycles. In order to prove its feasibility for practical application, a quasi-solid-state flexible supercapacitor is assembled, and its electrochemical characteristics (the specific area capacitance is 574.65 mF/cm2) and bendability (under bending to 135° 10, 000 times, 23.12% loss at a scan rate of 100 mV/s) are further investigated and prove its potential in this field.
