The stringent response enables <i>Mycobacterium tuberculosis</i> (<i>Mtb</i>) to shut down its replication and metabolism under various stresses. Here we show that <i>Mtb</i> lacking the stringent response enzyme Rel<sub>Mtb</sub> was unable to slow its replication rate during nutrient starvation.
