From nano-balls to nano-bowls.

ABSTRACT: Pentaphosphaferrocene [Cp*Fe(?⁵-P₅)] in combination with Cu(i) halides is capable of a template-directed synthesis of fullerene-like spheres. Herein, we present the use of a triple decker complex as template that leads to the formation of unprecedented 'nano-bowls'. These spherical domes resemble the truncated fullerenes I _h-C₈₀ and represent a novel spherical arrangement in the chemistry of spherical molecules.

Synthesis of nano-bowls with a Janus template.

Project description:Colloidal particles with two or more different surface properties (Janus particles) are of interest in catalysis, biological imaging, and drug delivery. Eccentric nanoparticles are a type of Janus particle consisting of a shell that envelops the majority of a core particle, leaving a portion of the core surface exposed. Previous work to synthesize eccentric nanoparticles from silica and polystyrene have only used microemulsion techniques. In contrast we report the sol-gel synthesis of eccentric Janus nanoparticles composed of a silica shell around a carboxylate-modified polystyrene core (Janus templates). In addition, we have synthesized nano-bowl-like structures after the removal of the polystyrene core by organic solvent. These Janus templates and nanobowls can be used as a versatile platform for site-specific functionalization or controlled theranostic delivery.

Designing hollow nano gold golf balls.

Project description:Hollow/porous nanoparticles, including nanocarriers, nanoshells, and mesoporous materials have applications in catalysis, photonics, biosensing, and delivery of theranostic agents. Using a hierarchical template synthesis scheme, we have synthesized a nanocarrier mimicking a golf ball, consisting of (i) solid silica core with a pitted gold surface and (ii) a hollow/porous gold shell without silica. The template consisted of 100 nm polystyrene beads attached to a larger silica core. Selective gold plating of the core followed by removal of the polystyrene beads produced a golf ball-like nanostructure with 100 nm pits. Dissolution of the silica core produced a hollow/porous golf ball-like nanostructure.

Nano-Magnesium Silicate Hydroxide/Crumpled Graphene Balls Composites, a Novel Kind of Lubricating Additive with High Performance for Friction and Wear Reduction.

Project description:In this study, crumpled graphene balls (CGB), a kind of nano-material, was used as an additive to improve the tribological properties of base oil. Nano-magnesium silicate hydroxide (MSH)/CGB composites were prepared by ultrasound-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation. The loading of MSH significantly increased the number of pleats and reduced the lamellar thickness of CGB. Then, in order to improve the compatibility with the base oil, the MSH/CGB composites were decorated with oleic acid and stearic acid to get modified lipophilic composites (ML-MSH/CGB). The ML-MSH/CGB were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the tribological properties of the ML-MSH/CGB in base oils were investigated using a ball-on-disc setup tribometer. It indicated that the fantastic tribological behavior of the ML-MSH/CGB in base oil may contribute to a smaller and extremely wrinkled laminated structure. Furthermore, the base oil with 0.005 wt% ML-MSH/CGB composites exhibited the best anti-friction effect, and its average friction coefficient, wearing capacity and wear scar diameter were reduced by 25.4%, 22.1% and 16.7%, respectively. The introduction of ML-MSH/CGB composed materials is an excellent strategy to optimize the friction performance of lubricating oil.

Aerodynamic drag of modern soccer balls.

Project description:Soccer balls such as the Adidas Roteiro that have been used in soccer tournaments thus far had 32 pentagonal and hexagonal panels. Recently, the Adidas Teamgeist II and Adidas Jabulani, respectively having 14 and 8 panels, have been used at tournaments; the aerodynamic characteristics of these balls have not yet been verified. Now, the Adidas Tango 12, having 32 panels, has been developed for use at tournaments; therefore, it is necessary to understand its aerodynamic characteristics. Through a wind tunnel test and ball trajectory simulations, this study shows that the aerodynamic resistance of the new 32-panel soccer ball is larger in the high-speed region and lower in the middle-speed region than that of the previous 14- and 8-panel balls. The critical Reynolds number of the Roteiro, Teamgeist II, Jabulani, and Tango 12 was ~2.2 × 10(5) (drag coefficient, C d ≈ 0.12), ~2.8 × 10(5) (C d ≈ 0.13), ~3.3 × 10(5) (C d ≈ 0.13), and ~2.4 × 10(5) (C d ≈ 0.15), respectively. The flight trajectory simulation suggested that the Tango 12, one of the newest soccer balls, has less air resistance in the medium-speed region than the Jabulani and can thus easily acquire large initial velocity in this region. It is considered that the critical Reynolds number of a soccer ball, as considered within the scope of this experiment, depends on the extended total distance of the panel bonds rather than the small designs on the panel surfaces.

Large Telluroxane Bowls Connected by a Layer of Iodine Ions.

Project description:Phenyltelluroxane clusters of the composition [{(PhTe)19 O24 }2 I18 (solv)] (1) are formed during the hydrolysis of [PhTeI3 ]2 or the oxidation of various phenyltellurium(II) compounds with iodine under hydrolytic conditions. The compounds consist of two half-spheres with a {(PhTe)19 O24 }9+ network, which are connected by 18 iodine atoms. The spherical clusters can accommodate solvent molecules such as pyridine or methanol in the center of two rings formed by iodine atoms. The presence of other metal ions during the cluster formation results in a selective replacement of the central {PhTe}3+ units of each half-sphere as has been demonstrated with the isolation of [{(PhTe)18 ({Ca(H2 O)2 }O24 }2 I16 ] (2) and [{(PhTe)18 ({Y(NO3 )(H2 O)}O24 }2 I16 ] (3). A crownether-like coordination by six oxygen atoms of the telluroxane network is found for the {Ca(H2 O}2 }2+ and {Y(NO3 )(H2 O)}2+ building blocks. Mass spectrometric studies show that considerable amounts of the intact clusters are transferred to the gas phase without dissociation.

Elastic shocks in relativistic rigid rods and balls.

Project description:We study the free boundary problem for the 'hard phase' material introduced by Christodoulou in (Christodoulou 1995 Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 130, 343-400), both for rods in (1?+?1)-dimensional Minkowski space-time and for spherically symmetric balls in (3?+?1)-dimensional Minkowski space-time. Unlike Christodoulou, we do not consider a 'soft phase', and so we regard this material as an elastic medium, capable of both compression and stretching. We prove that shocks must be null hypersurfaces, and derive the conditions to be satisfied at a free boundary. We solve the equations of motion of the rods explicitly, and we prove existence of solutions to the equations of motion of the spherically symmetric balls for an arbitrarily long (but finite) time, given initial conditions sufficiently close to those for the relaxed ball at rest. In both cases we find that the solutions contain shocks if and only if the pressure or its time derivative do not vanish at the free boundary initially. These shocks interact with the free boundary, causing it to lose regularity.

Microcavity Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy of Fullerene C60 Bucky Balls.

Project description:Raman spectroscopy is a widely used characterization technique in material science. It is a non-destructive tool with relatively simple instrumentation, and provides intrinsic qualitative information of analytes by probing their vibrational modes. In many cases, Raman enhancement is essential for detecting low-intensity signals in high-noise environments, spectrally unresolved features, and hidden modes. Here we present optical and Raman spectroscopic characterization of fullerene C 60 in a gold microcavity. The fabrication of single-layered gold mirrors is facile, low cost and direct but was proven to give considerably significant enhancement. The findings of this work demonstrate the cavity resonance as a powerful tool in obtaining tunability over individual peak for selective enhancement in the tuned spectral range. The PL of the material within the cavity has demonstrated a red shift assumed to be caused by the low-energy transitions. These transitions are induced by virtual low-energy states generated by the cavity. We further observe that adopting this principle enables resolution of active Raman modes that until now were unobserved. Finally, we assigned the new experimentally observed modes to the corresponding motions calculated by DFT.

Building microscopic soccer balls with evaporating colloidal fakir drops.

Project description:Evaporation-driven particle self-assembly can be used to generate three-dimensional microstructures. We present a unique method to create colloidal microstructures in which we can control the amount of particles and their packing fraction. To this end, we evaporate colloidal dispersion droplets on a special type of superhydrophobic microstructured surface, on which the droplet remains in Cassie-Baxter state during the entire evaporative process. The remainders of the droplet consist of a massive spherical cluster of the microspheres, with diameters ranging from a few tens up to several hundreds of microns. We present scaling arguments to show how the final particle packing fraction of these balls depends on the dynamics of the droplet evaporation, particle size, and number of particles in the system.

Polymer blend directed anisotropic self-assembly toward mesoporous inorganic bowls and nanosheets.

Project description:Anisotropic mesoporous inorganic materials have attracted great interest due to their unique and intriguing properties, yet their controllable synthesis still remains a great challenge. Here, we develop a simple synthesis approach toward mesoporous inorganic bowls and two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets by combining block copolymer (BCP)-directed self-assembly with asymmetric phase migration in ternary-phase blends. The homogeneous blend solution spontaneously self-assembles to anisotropically stacked hybrids as the solvent evaporates. Two minor phases-BCP/inorganic precursor and homopolystyrene (hPS)-form closely stacked, Janus domains that are dispersed/confined in the major homopoly(methyl methacrylate) (hPMMA) matrix. hPS phases are partially covered by BCP-rich phases, where ordered mesostructures develop. With increasing the relative amount of hPS, the anisotropic shape evolves from bowls to 2D nanosheets. Benefiting from the unique bowl-like morphology, the resulting transition metal oxides show promise as high-performance anodes in potassium-ion batteries.
