Mitochondria generate most cellular energy and are targeted by multiple pathogens during infection. In turn, metazoans employ surveillance mechanisms such as the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPR<sup>mt</sup>) to detect and respond to mitochondrial dysfunction as an indicator of infection.
