Hepatitis A Virus Infection from a Contaminated Tap of Ground Water Facility in a Neighborhood Park, Republic of Korea.

ABSTRACT: A patient with Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection was notified to the public health authority. The identical HAV was found at a water dispensing outlet at the ground water facility and the toilet close to the facility. Serosurveillance in the community was conducted. Suspicious individuals were asked to visit city public health center and had a serologic test for anti-HAV Ig M. Overall, 100 individuals were tested, and all were negative for the anti-HAV Ig M. In our study cohort, we could not identify additional case of HAV infection.

Endosymbionts of Acanthamoeba isolated from domestic tap water in Korea.

Project description:In a previous study, we reported our discovery of Acanthamoeba contamination in domestic tap water; in that study, we determined that some Acanthamoeba strains harbor endosymbiotic bacteria, via our molecular characterization by mitochondrial DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism (Mt DNA RFLP). Five (29.4%) among 17 Acanthamoeba isolates contained endosymbionts in their cytoplasm, as demonstrated via orcein staining. In order to estimate their pathogenicity, we conducted a genetic characterization of the endosymbionts in Acanthamoeba isolated from domestic tap water via 16S rDNA sequencing. The endosymbionts of Acanthamoeba sp. KA/WP3 and KA/WP4 evidenced the highest level of similarity, at 97% of the recently published 16S rDNA sequence of the bacterium, Candidatus Amoebophilus asiaticus. The endosymbionts of Acanthamoeba sp. KA/WP8 and KA/WP12 shared a 97% sequence similarity with each other, and were also highly similar to Candidatus Odyssella thessalonicensis, a member of the alpha-proteobacteria. The endosymbiont of Acanthamoeba sp. KA/WP9 exhibits a high degree of similarity (85-95%) with genus Methylophilus, which is not yet known to harbor any endosymbionts. This is the first report, to the best of our knowledge, to show that Methylophilus spp. can live in the cytoplasm of Acanthamoeba.

Oropharyngeal Tularemia Outbreak Associated with Drinking Contaminated Tap Water, Turkey, July-September 2013.

Project description:In 2013, an oropharyngeal tularemia outbreak in Turkey affected 55 persons. Drinking tap water during the likely exposure period was significantly associated with illness (attack rate 27% vs. 11% among non-tap water drinkers). Findings showed the tap water source had been contaminated by surface water, and the chlorination device malfunctioned.

Melioidosis in Patients with COVID-19 Exposed to Contaminated Tap Water, Thailand, 2021.

Project description:In September 2021, a total of 25 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 developed acute melioidosis after (median 7 days) admission to a COVID-19 field hospital in Thailand. Eight nonpotable tap water samples and 6 soil samples were culture-positive for Burkholderia pseudomallei. Genomic analysis suggested contaminated tap water as the likely cause of illness.

Treatment of Uranium-Contaminated Ground Water Using Adsorption Technology via Novel Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles.

Project description:Contamination of underground water by uranium (U) and other heavy metals is a growing concern. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have shown great potential as an adsorbent material for heavy metal removal. This study synthesized a novel MSN using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and evaluated its effectiveness for removing uranium from aqueous solutions under different conditions. The particle size was reduced to 150-240 nm to enhance adsorption. Fourier transform infrared characterization and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed successful synthesis and modification. Results showed that the MSN adsorbent was highly effective in removing U, with a removal rate of 85.35% at 120 min. Temperature had a significant impact, with the highest removal rate of 96.7% achieved at 25 °C and a U concentration of 10 ppm. The highest removal rate of 91.89% was achieved at a pH of 6 and a U concentration of 50 ppm. The highest removal rate of 95.16% was achieved at 25 mg and a U concentration of 50 ppm at room temperature for 60 min. The MSNs also showed a 58.27% removal rate in a mixture solution at room temperature for 60 min. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the MSN adsorbent for removing U under different conditions.

Identification of Free-Living Amoebas in Tap Water of Buildings with Storage Tanks in Korea.

Project description:Free-living amoebas (FLAs) can cause severe disease in humans and animals when they become infected. However, there are no accurate survey reports on the prevalence of FLAs in Korea. In this study, we collected 163 tap water samples from buildings, apartments, and restrooms of highway service areas in 7 Korean provinces with high population density. All these buildings and facilities have water storage tanks in common. The survey was separated into categories of buildings, apartments, and highway service areas. Five hundred milliliters of tap water from each building was collected and filtered with 0.2 µm pore filter paper. The filters were incubated in agar plates with heated E. coli at 25°C. After axenization, genomic DNA was collected from each FLA, and species classification was performed using partial 18S-rDNA PCR-sequencing analysis. We found that 12.9% of tap water from buildings with storage tanks in Korea was contaminated with FLAs. The highway service areas had the highest contamination rate at 33.3%. All of the FLAs, except one, were genetically similar to Vermamoeba vermiformis (Hartmannella vermiformis). The remaining FLA (KFA21) was very similar to Acanthamoeba lugdunensis (KA/E26). Although cases of human infection by V. vermiformis are very rare, we must pay attention to the fact that one-third of tap water supplies in highway service areas have been contaminated.

Association of U.S. Dialysis facility neighborhood characteristics with facility-level kidney transplantation.

Project description:Improving access to optimal healthcare may depend on the attributes of neighborhoods where patients receive healthcare services. We investigated whether the characteristics of dialysis facility neighborhoods--where most patients with end-stage renal disease are treated--were associated with facility-level kidney transplantation.We examined the association between census tract (neighborhood)-level sociodemographic factors and facility-level kidney transplantation rate in 3,983 U.S. dialysis facilities where kidney transplantation rates were high. Number of kidney transplants and total person-years contributed at the facility level in 2007-2010 were obtained from the Dialysis Facility Report and linked to the census tract data on sociodemographic characteristics from the American Community Survey 2006-2010 by dialysis facility location. We used multivariable Poisson models with generalized estimating equations to estimate the link between the neighborhood characteristics and transplant incidence.Dialysis facilities in the United States were located in neighborhoods with substantially greater proportions of black and poor residents, relative to the national average. Most facility neighborhood characteristics were associated with transplant, with incidence rate ratios (95% CI) for standardized increments (in percentage) of neighborhood exposures of: living in poverty, 0.88 (0.84-0.92), black race, 0.83 (0.78-0.89); high school graduates, 1.22 (1.17-1.26); and unemployed, 0.90 (0.85-0.95).Dialysis facility neighborhood characteristics may be modestly associated with facility rates of kidney transplantation. The success of dialysis facility interventions to improve access to kidney transplantation may partially depend on reducing neighborhood-level barriers.
