Project description:This article describes the context, development, objectives, and content of three instruments. They stem from two questionnaires, used in the ERiK-Surveys 2020 and the Corona-KiTa-Study (CKS), two multi-perspective surveys which were developed by the German Youth Institute, to measure quality as well as challenges and solutions of the Corona pandemic in early childhood education and care (ECEC). The three instruments focus on (1) childcare center directors’ subjective level of information about pandemic-related regulations in the ERiK questionnaire and the extent of implementation of (2) hygiene and (3) protective measures in ECEC in the CKS questionnaire. First analyses suggest good performance and quality of the instruments. Further analyses (e.g., regarding validity and reliability) will be carried out. The instruments seem to be promising for future research, for example regarding medical questions in the field of ECEC. Project description:Under the background of global response to climate crisis and environmental pollution, environmental regulation plays an increasingly important role in green technology innovation. This paper uses data from 280 Chinese cities from 2003 to 2019 to empirically answer the question whether environmental regulation can improve the level of urban green technology innovation. It is found that environmental regulation has a significant positive effect on green technology innovation. Under the heterogeneity of economic geographical region and resource-based city, environmental regulation has positive promoting effect on urban green technology innovation. Heterogeneity results also show that environmental regulation significantly promotes green technology innovation in central and resource-based cities, but does not significantly promote green technology innovation in eastern and western cities and non-resource-based cities. Further research shows that environmental regulation can promote the level of green technology innovation through the two transmission mechanisms of government technology input and foreign direct investment. For the Chinese local government which is implementing the policy of green economic transformation, the formulation of scientific regional environmental policy is beneficial to improve the level of green technology innovation, increase government technology input and optimize the foreign investment environment.

Project description:Cooperative bioengagement efforts, as practiced by U.S. government-funded entities, such as the Defense Threat Reduction Agency's Cooperative Biological Engagement Program, the State Department's Biosecurity Engagement Program, and parallel programs in other countries, exist at the nexus between public health and security. These programs have an explicit emphasis on developing projects that address the priorities of the partner country as well as the donor. While the objectives of cooperative bioengagement programs focus on reducing the potential for accidental or intentional misuse and/or release of dangerous biological agents, many partner countries are interested in bioengagement as a means to improve basic public health capacities. This article examines the extent to which cooperative bioengagement projects address public health capacity building under the revised International Health Regulations and alignment with the Global Health Security Agenda action packages.

Project description:The methodological development in the mapping of the brain structural connectome from diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) has raised many hopes in the neuroscientific community. Indeed, the knowledge of the connections between different brain regions is fundamental to study brain anatomy and function. The reliability of the structural connectome is therefore of paramount importance. In the search for accuracy, researchers have given particular attention to linking white matter tractography methods - used for estimating the connectome - with information about the microstructure of the nervous tissue. The creation and validation of methods in this context were hampered by a lack of practical numerical phantoms. To achieve this, we created a numerical phantom that mimics complex anatomical fibre pathway trajectories while also accounting for microstructural features such as axonal diameter distribution, myelin presence, and variable packing densities. The substrate has a micrometric resolution and an unprecedented size of 1 cubic millimetre to mimic an image acquisition matrix of 40×40×40 voxels. DW-MRI images were obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of spin dynamics to enable the validation of quantitative tractography. The phantom is composed of 12,196 synthetic tubular fibres with diameters ranging from 1.4 µm to 4.2 µm, interconnecting sixteen regions of interest. The simulated images capture the microscopic properties of the tissue (e.g. fibre diameter, water diffusing within and around fibres, free water compartment), while also having desirable macroscopic properties resembling the anatomy, such as the smoothness of the fibre trajectories. While previous phantoms were used to validate either tractography or microstructure, this phantom can enable a better assessment of the connectome estimation's reliability on the one side, and its adherence to the actual microstructure of the nervous tissue on the other.

Project description:Due to the increasing tattoo practicing in Eastern countries and general concern on tattoo ink composition and safety, the green tattoo inks Green Concentrate by Eternal, for European and "for Asia Market Only" were analyzed, under the premise that only the former falls under a composition regulation. A separation of the additives from the pigment was carried out by successive extraction in solvents of different polarities, i.e., water, acetone and dichloromethane. The solid residues were analyzed by IR and Raman spectroscopies, the liquid fractions by GC/mass spectrometry. The relative pigment load and element traces were also estimated. We found that the European and the Asian inks are based on the same pigment, PG7, restricted in Europe, though at different loads. They have a similar content of harmful impurities, such as Ni, As, Cd and Sb and both contain siloxanes, including harmful D4. Furthermore, they have different physical-chemical properties, the European ink being more hydrophilic, the Asian more hydrophobic. Additionally, the Asian ink contains harmful additives for the solubilization of hydrophobic matrices and by-products of the phthalocyanine synthesis. Teratogenic phthalates are present as well as chlorinated teratogenic and carcinogenic compounds usually associated to the laser treatment for removal purposes, to a larger extent in the European ink. The composition of the inks does not seem to reflect regulatory restrictions, where issued.

Project description:BackgroundThe longitudinal population-based study Gesundheit 65+ aimed to close data gaps on health and well-being of older adults in Germany in times of the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsThe target population comprised persons 65 years and older permanently residing in Germany and with sufficient German language skills. Proxy interviews were possible and consent from legal representatives was obtained as necessary in order to enable participation of physically or cognitively impaired persons. A two-stage sampling process, was used to draw 128 primary sample points (PSUs) and within these PSUs sex- and age-stratified random samples were drawn from population registries. A mixed-mode design was applied to contact the study population and for data collection. Data were collected between June 2021 and April 2023. Participants were surveyed a total of four times at intervals of four months. At month 12 participants were offered a home visit including a non-invasive examination. Data on all-cause mortality and information on neighborhood social and built environment as well as health insurance data will be linked to primarily collected data at the individual level.DiscussionResults will inform health politicians and other stakeholders in the care system on health and health care needs of older people in Germany.

Project description:Annual Firearms Manufacturing and Export Reports (AFMER) published annually by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were digitized, cleaned, merged, aggregated, and georeferenced to produce a geographical time-series dataset. By preserving unique identifiers and locational information, the geographical dataset of firearms manufacturing enables quantitative research across public health data records, including compliance reporting by U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Association, Environmental Protection Agency, and Department of Commerce. The dataset includes records for 8,707 unique manufacturing licensees, with a total of 133,952,899 firearms released into commerce between 2000 and 2020. Records include the latitude and longitude attributes for manufacturing locations that produced more than one percent of firearms released into commerce during the study timeframe (n=100). To facilitate research, the dataset was stored in multiple formats, including table formats, such as comma-separate values and excel format, as well as GIS shapefile format. The data may be explored in multiple dimensions: by time, by location, and by type of firearm released into commerce. Types of firearms include: miscellaneous firearms, pistols (by caliber: 22, 25, 32, 38, 50, 9mm), rifles, revolvers (by caliber: 22, 32, 35, 38, 44, 50), and shotguns. Total firearms manufactured by year and in aggregate and total exports, by firearm type, and by year were calculated. Percentage of total firearms manufactured for each location was also determined. The dataset does not include used firearms or firearms imported to the United States. Several software packages enabled the production of this dataset. Adobe Acrobat software was used to convert archival .PDF files into comma-separated value tables. The authors systematically verified and validated the conversion process. Annual tables were merged by the unique identifier, RDS Key, across time periods, using Stata statistical software. Aggregation took place in Stata and Excel software, and percent of total firearms manufactured was calculated for each location. Aggregate tables identifying locations in descending order for total reported firearms released into commerce (2000-2020) were generated in Excel. ArcGIS Online software was used to geocode manufacturing locations where more than one percent of total study firearms were produced. ArcGIS Pro software was used to identify centroid, or latitude and longitude locations for the facilities. ArcGIS Pro software was also used to create a summary figure, and GIS shapefile feature data.

Project description:BackgroundImplementation research aims to facilitate the timely and routine implementation and sustainment of evidence-based interventions and services. A glaring gap in this endeavour is the capability of researchers, healthcare practitioners and managers to quantitatively evaluate implementation efforts using psychometrically sound instruments. To encourage and support the use of precise and accurate implementation outcome measures, this systematic review aimed to identify and appraise studies that assess the measurement properties of quantitative implementation outcome instruments used in physical healthcare settings.MethodThe following data sources were searched from inception to March 2019, with no language restrictions: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, HMIC, CINAHL and the Cochrane library. Studies that evaluated the measurement properties of implementation outcome instruments in physical healthcare settings were eligible for inclusion. Proctor et al.'s taxonomy of implementation outcomes was used to guide the inclusion of implementation outcomes: acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, adoption, penetration, implementation cost and sustainability. Methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist. Psychometric quality of the included instruments was assessed using the Contemporary Psychometrics checklist (ConPsy). Usability was determined by number of items per instrument.ResultsFifty-eight publications reporting on the measurement properties of 55 implementation outcome instruments (65 scales) were identified. The majority of instruments assessed acceptability (n = 33), followed by appropriateness (n = 7), adoption (n = 4), feasibility (n = 4), penetration (n = 4) and sustainability (n = 3) of evidence-based practice. The methodological quality of individual scales was low, with few studies rated as 'excellent' for reliability (6/62) and validity (7/63), and both studies that assessed responsiveness rated as 'poor' (2/2). The psychometric quality of the scales was also low, with 12/65 scales scoring 7 or more out of 22, indicating greater psychometric strength. Six scales (6/65) rated as 'excellent' for usability.ConclusionInvestigators assessing implementation outcomes quantitatively should select instruments based on their methodological and psychometric quality to promote consistent and comparable implementation evaluations. Rather than developing ad hoc instruments, we encourage further psychometric testing of instruments with promising methodological and psychometric evidence.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO 2017 CRD42017065348.

Project description:The database provides information on coastal protection structures (containing geosynthetic materials) located on the coast of the South-East Baltic, in the Kaliningrad Oblast (Russia) and the Pomeranian Voivodeship (Poland). The fragments of geosynthetics may enter the environment due to partial destruction and operational losses and become a new type of coastal pollution. The database contains the following sections: the tabular data about coastal protecting structures [ProtectingStructures_tab.xlsx]; the point vector geodata about these structures [ProtectingStructures_pnt.kmz] and used geosynthetic materials; the satellite images and photos [ProtectingStructures_images.pdf] demonstrated the general and close-up location of the coastal protecting structures in the satellite image, as well as their seeming. Information was collected during the ERANET-RUS_Plus joint project EI-GEO, ID 212 (RFBR 18-55-76002 ERA_a, BMBF 01DJ18005).

Project description:There is a scarcity of research reports on the effect of ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation on genome-wide transcriptional regulation in the multicellular green microalga including Volvox carteri (V. carteri). This microalga possesses only two cell types including mortal and motile somatic cells, as well as immortal and immotile reproductive cells. Therefore, the present study evaluated the effect of low-dose UV-B radiation on the cell-type-specific gene expression pattern of reproductive and somatic cells in an asexual life cycle of V. carteri using RNA sequence method. To this end, the separated reproductive and somatic cells were treated for 1 hour at an intensity of 0.056 mW/cm-2 UV-B radiation. Then, a transcriptome analysis was conducted between the UV-B and white light treated groups in either of the cell types. Based on differential gene expression analyses, no differentially expressed genes were found in reproductive cells under the treatment as compared to the control group. This type of cell maintained its steady state. However, treating the somatic cells with UV-B radiation led to at least 126 differentially expressed genes compared to the untreated control group. In addition, the results of a direct comparison demonstrated a restricted and wide response to UV-B radiation in somatic cells as compared to reproductive cells. Based on the results, UV-B radiation could be involved in cell-type-specific regulation of biological pathways.
