Project description:BackgroundThis study was carried out in Gerba Dima Forest, South-Western Ethiopia, to determine the floristic composition, species diversity and community types along environmental gradients. Identifying and interpreting the structure of species assemblages is the main goal of plant community ecology. Investigation of forest community composition and structure is very useful in understanding the status of tree population, regeneration, and diversity for conservation purposes.MethodNinety sample plots having a size of 25 × 25 m (625 m2) were laid by employing stratified random sampling. Nested plots were used to sample plants of different sizes and different environmental variables. All woody plant species with Diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 2.5 cm and height ≥ 1.5 m were recorded in 25 m × 25 m plots. Hierarchical (agglomerative) cluster analysis was performed using the free statistical software R version 3.6.1 using package cluster to classify the vegetation into plant community types. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) ordination was used in describing the pattern of plant communities along an environmental gradient.ResultOne hundred and eighty plant species belonging to 145 genera, 69 families and comprising of 15 endemic species were recorded. Of these, 52 species (28.9%) were trees, 6 species (3.33%) were Trees/shrubs, 31 species (17.22%) were shrubs, 76 species (42.22%) were herbs, and 15 species (8.33%) were Lianas. Rubiaceae, Acanthaceae and Asteraceae were the richest family each represented by 11 genera and 11 species (6.11%), 9 genera and 11 species (6.11%), 6 genera and 11 species (6.11%), respectively of total floristic composition. Cluster analysis resulted in five different plant communities and this result was supported by the ordination result. RDA result showed altitude was the main environmental variable in determining the plant communities. The ANOVA test indicated that the five community types differ significantly from each other with regard to Electrical Conductivity and Potassium.ConclusionsDescription of floristic diversity of species in Gerba Dima forest revealed the presence of high species diversity and richness. The presence of endemic plant species in the study forest shows the potential of the area for biodiversity conservation.

Project description:BackgroundForests play an important role in mitigating global climate change by capturing and sequestering atmospheric carbon. Quantitative estimation of the temporal and spatial pattern of carbon storage in forest ecosystems is critical for formulating forest management policies to combat climate change. This study explored the effects of land cover change on carbon stock dynamics in the Wujig Mahgo Waren forest, a dry Afromontane forest that covers an area of 17,000 ha in northern Ethiopia.ResultsThe total carbon stocks of the Wujig Mahgo Waren forest ecosystems estimated using a multi-disciplinary approach that combined remote sensing with a ground survey were 1951, 1999, and 1955 GgC in 1985, 2000 and 2016 years respectively. The mean carbon stocks in the dense forests, open forests, grasslands, cultivated lands and bare lands were estimated at 181.78?±?27.06, 104.83?±?12.35, 108.77?±?6.77, 76.54?±?7.84 and 83.11?±?8.53 MgC ha-1 respectively. The aboveground vegetation parameters (tree density, DBH and height) explain 59% of the variance in soil organic carbon.ConclusionsThe obtained estimates of mean carbon stocks in ecosystems representing the major land cover types are of importance in the development of forest management plan aimed at enhancing mitigation potential of dry Afromontane forests in northern Ethiopia.

Project description:An allometric equation is used to convert easily measured tree variables into biomass. However, limited species-specific biomass equations are available for native tree species grown in various biomes of Ethiopia. The available pantropic generic equation has resulted in biases owing to the uncertainty of the generic model estimation due to the difference in tree nature and response to growth conditions. The objective of the study is, thus, to develop a species-specific allometric equation for reducing uncertainty in biomass estimation at the Moist Evergreen Afromontane Forest in south-central Ethiopia. Five tree species were selected for model development, these selected trees were harvested and weighed in the field. The measured above-ground biomass data related to easily measured tree variables: diameter at stump height, diameter at breast height (dbh), crown diameter, and total tree height. The developed model evaluated and compared with previously published model by using measures of goodness of fit such as coefficient of determination (R2), total relative error, mean prediction error, root mean square error, and Akaike information criteria. The analysis showed that a model with dbh as a single predictor variable was selected as the best model for the estimation of above-ground biomass. It gives the highest R2 for Syzygium guineense (0.992) and the lowest for Bersama abyssinica (0.879). The additions of other tree variables did not improve the model The pantropic model by Brown overestimates the biomass by 9.6-77.8% while both Chave models resulted in an estimation error of 12-50.3%. Our findings indicated that species-specific allometric equations outperformed both site-specific and pantropic models in estimating above-ground biomass by giving 0.1% up to 7.9% estimation error for the respective tree species.

Project description:Tidal wetlands are global hotspots of carbon storage but errors exist with current estimates on their carbon density due to the use of factors estimated from other habitats for converting loss-on-ignition (LOI) to organic carbon (OC); and the omission of certain significant carbon pools. Here we show that the widely used conversion factor (LOI/OC?=?1.724) is significantly lower than our measurements for saltmarsh sediments (1.92?±?0.01) and oversimplifies the polynomial relationship between sediment OC and LOI for mangrove forests. Global mangrove OC stock in the top-meter sediment reaches 1.93 Pg when corrected for this bias, and is 20% lower than the previous estimates. Ecosystem carbon stock (living and dead biomass, sediment OC and inorganic carbon) is estimated at 3.7-6.2 Pg. Mangrove deforestation leads to carbon emission rates at 23.5-38.7 Tg yr-1 after 2000. Mangrove sediment OC stock has previously been over-estimated while ecosystem carbon stock underestimated.

Project description:Quantitative and qualitative loss of tropical forests prompted international policy agendas to slow down forest loss through reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD)+, ensuring carbon offset payments to developing countries. So far, many African countries lack reliable forest carbon data and monitoring systems as required by REDD+. In this study, we estimate the carbon stocks of a naturally forested landscape unaffected by direct human impact. We used data collected from 34 plots randomly distributed across the Mount Birougou National Park (690 km(2)) in southern Gabon. We used tree-level data on species, diameter, height, species-specific wood density and carbon fraction as well as site-level data on dead wood, soil and litter carbon to calculate carbon content in aboveground, belowground, dead wood, soil and litter as 146, 28, 14, 186 and 7 Mg ha(-1), respectively. Results may serve as a benchmark to assess ecosystem carbon loss/gain for the Massif du Chaillu in Gabon and the Republic of Congo, provide field data for remote sensing and also may contribute to establish national monitoring systems.Les pertes qualitatives et quantitatives de forêt tropicale ont poussé les calendriers politiques internationaux à ralentir la perte de forêts au moyen des mécanismes REDD+, qui garantissent le paiement compensatoire des émissions de carbone aux pays en développement. Jusqu'à présent, de nombreux pays africains ne disposent pas encore de données fiables sur le carbone forestier, pas plus que de systèmes de suivi exigés par les REDD+. Dans cet article, nous estimons les stocks de carbone d'un paysage de forêt naturelle non affecté par des impacts humains directs. Nous avons utilisé les données provenant de 34 parcelles réparties au hasard dans le Parc National du Mont Birougou (690 km²), dans le sud du Gabon. Nous avons utilisé trois niveaux de données pour les espèces, le diamètre, la hauteur et la densité spécifique du bois par espèce, et la fraction de carbone ainsi que des données au niveau du site sur le carbone du bois mort, du sol et de la litière pour calculer le contenu en carbone au-dessus du sol, en dessous, dans le bois mort, le sol et la litière, à savoir, respectivement, 146, 28, 14, 186 et 7 mg ha(-1). Ces résultats peuvent servir de données de référence pour évaluer la perte ou le gain de carbone de l'écosystème pour le Massif du Chaillu, au Gabon, et en République du Congo, constituer des données de terrain pour la détection à distance et aussi contribuer à établir des systèmes de suivi au niveau national.

Project description:BackgroundDry evergreen montane forests of Ethiopia provide economic and ecological services for the community but it is under several threats of natural and anthropogenic disturbances. The study aimed to investigate the floristic composition, species diversity, and plant community distribution of Guard forest along environmental gradients.MethodsA systematic sampling technique was used to collect vegetation and environmental data. Fifty eight plots each with 400 m2 (20 m X 20 m) were established for trees and shrubs and 2 m x2m (4 m2) for herbs along eleven transect lines. Shannon Weiner diversity index and evenness were used to assess the species diversity and richness. The similarities among plant communities were computed using Sorenson's similarity index. The plant community types and vegetation-environment relationships were analyzed using hierarchical cluster analysis and Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) in R software, respectively.ResultsA total of 137 plant species belonging to 111 genera and 55 families were identified. The most dominant families in the study area were Fabaceae and Asteraceae. Among the total plant species documented in the forest, 42(30.65%) were trees, 36 (26.28%) were shrubs, 48(35.04%) were herbs, and 11 (8.03%) were climbers. Of the total species, 14(10.22%) species are endemic to Ethiopia and Eritrea. Three plant community types were identified by cluster analysis. The Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index was 3.39 and evenness was 0.87 for the forest. The pattern of plant species distribution was significantly influenced by altitude, pH, BD, slope, and charcoal (P < 0.05).ConclusionGuard forest has good species diversity and richness, and supports different endemic plant species that show the potential of the area to support useful but some of the characteristics species are not found in the forest and others are rare in their existence due to the presence of disturbances and need immediate conservation to ensure sustainable use and management of the forest.

Project description:Protecting aboveground carbon stocks in tropical forests is essential for mitigating global climate change and is assumed to simultaneously conserve biodiversity. Although the relationship between tree diversity and carbon stocks is generally positive, the relationship remains unclear for consumers or decomposers. We assessed this relationship for multiple trophic levels across the tree of life (10 organismal groups, 3 kingdoms) in lowland rainforests of the Congo Basin. Comparisons across regrowth and old-growth forests evinced the expected positive relationship for trees, but not for other organismal groups. Moreover, differences in species composition between forests increased with difference in carbon stock. These variable associations across the tree of life contradict the implicit assumption that maximum co-benefits to biodiversity are associated with conservation of forests with the highest carbon storage. Initiatives targeting climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation should include both old-growth and regenerating forests to optimally benefit biodiversity and carbon storage.

Project description:BackgroundIn Ethiopia, highland bamboo has been cultivated in various niches: farmlands, riverbanks, woodlot boundaries, and homesteads, and agroforestry systems. However, the biomass and carbon storage of potential of bamboo forests across niches is not well characterized in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was conducted to estimate the biomass and carbon storage potential of highland bamboo plantations in northwestern Ethiopia. To this end, a total of 60 circular plots measuring 100 m2 with a radius of 5.64 m were randomly established on the homestead, woodlot, and riverbank plantation niches to conduct the inventory. The biomass storage of bamboo was calculated based on previously published allometric equations. Biomass and carbon stock variations among age-classes and niches of bamboo forests were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and subsequent pairwise means comparisons of carbon stocks among niches were performed via post hoc Tukey test at p < 0.05.ResultsResults showed that the mean aboveground biomass (AGB) ranged from 150.18 - 191.42 Mg ha-1 in the entire niches. The highest amount of AGB was stored in the homestead niche (191.42 Mg ha-1) followed by the woodlot (180.11 Mg ha-1) and riverbank niche (150.17 Mg ha-1), respectively. The highest carbon stock (111.56 Mg C ha-1) was found in the homestead niche while the smallest amount was recorded in the riverbank niche (87.52 Mg ha-1). The homestead bamboo plantation has the highest biomass storage due to the application of manure and natural fertilizer, regular harvesting and management of culms, and protection from illegal harvesting and grazing.ConclusionThis study highlights the importance of bamboo plantations in climate change mitigation. Hence, bamboo plantation should be promoted; and natural resource management and forestry departments of the government, Universities, research centers, the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR), and other partners should work with local communities to expand bamboo plantation on their homesteads and degraded lands.

Project description:Species confined to naturally fragmented habitats may exhibit intrinsic population complexity which may challenge interpretations of species response to anthropogenic landscape transformation. In South Africa, where native forests are naturally fragmented, forest-dependent birds have undergone range declines since 1992, most notably among insectivores. These insectivores appear sensitive to the quality of natural matrix habitats, and it is unknown whether transformation of the landscape matrix has disrupted gene flow in these species. We undertook a landscape genetics study of four forest-dependent insectivorous songbirds across southeast South Africa. Microsatellite data were used to conduct a priori optimization of landscape resistance surfaces (land cover, rivers and dams, and elevation) using cost-distances along least-cost pathway (LCP), and resistance distances (IBR). We detected pronounced declines in effective population sizes over the past two centuries for the endemic forest specialist Cossypha dichroa and Batis capensis, alongside recent gene flow disruption in B. capensis, C. dichroa and Pogonocichla stellata. Landscape resistance modelling showed both native forest and dense thicket configuration facilitates gene flow in P. stellata, B. capensis and C. dichroa. Facultative dispersal of P. stellata through dense thicket likely aided resilience against historic landscape transformation, whereas combined forest-thicket degradation adversely affected the forest generalist B. capensis. By contrast, Phylloscopus ruficapilla appears least reliant upon landscape features to maintain gene flow and was least impacted by anthropogenic landscape transformation. Collectively, gene flow in all four species is improved at lower elevations, along river valleys, and riparian corridors- where native forest and dense thicket better persist. Consistent outperformance of LCP over IBR land-cover models for P. stellata, B. capensis and C. dichroa demonstrates the benefits of wildlife corridors for South African forest-dependent bird conservation, to ameliorate the extinction debts from past and present anthropogenic forest exploitation.

Project description:Terrestrial ecosystems such as forest landscapes provide critical ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, fundamental to people, society and the global climate change discourse. Just like moist forest, dry Afromontane forests too present a high carbon sequestration potential. However, Uganda has since not undertaken carbon stock inventories for these conservation areas, especially with dry Afromontane forests like Agoro-agu central forest reserve (CFR). So, their potential to capture and store carbon is yet to be understood in Uganda. This study was carried out to estimate carbon stock of Agoro-agu CFR, for its potential in climate change mitigation. A stratified sampling design was used, where 65 sample plots were established. Nested, fixed area circular sample plots with sub-plots of varying radii for tree height, diameter measurements and soil sampling, were used. The mean total carbon stock of Agoro-agu CFR was estimated at 606.7 Mg C ha-1, for which 409, 72, 124 and 0.24 Mg C ha-1 was stored as above ground carbon, below ground carbon, soil organic carbon and carbon in litter herbs and grass respectively. The study illustrates the carbon sequestration potential of the forest reserve for any results-based payment projects for climate change mitigation. This is mainly due to the interventions through collaborative forest management arrangements and the pro-poor reducing emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) pilot project in the landscape. This however, calls for more multi-stakeholders' collaboration from direct resource users to national level to enhance forest conservation and reduce forest degradation for sustainable resource benefits and other ecosystem services.
