Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD<sup>+</sup>) is a co-substrate for several enzymes, including the sirtuin family of NAD<sup>+</sup>-dependent protein deacylases. Beneficial effects of increased NAD<sup>+</sup> levels and sirtuin activation on mitochondrial homeostasis, organismal metabolism and lifespan have been established across species.
