One-piece polarizing interferometer for ultrafast spectroscopic polarimetry.

ABSTRACT: This paper describes a new class of ultrafast dynamic spectro-polarimetry based on a specially designed one-piece polarizing interferometer. It provides spectral polarimetric parameters of an anisotropic object in milliseconds with high precision. The proposed ultrafast spectro-polarimetry has no moving parts and it is highly robust to external noises. The one-piece polarizing interferometric scheme enables the world fastest and simplest solution in spectroscopic polarimetry. The distinct simple concept on one-piece polarizing interferometer can extract spectroscopic polarimetric parameters ?(k) and ?(k) precisely with a speed of over 200?Hz over the entire visible wavelength range with a spectral resolution of less than 1?nm. The proposed novel one-piece scheme will have a significant potential of a paradigm shift from lab to fab in polarization metrology.

Ultrafast magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging using SPICE with learned subspaces.

Project description:PurposeTo develop a subspace learning method for the recently proposed subspace-based MRSI approach known as SPICE, and achieve ultrafast 1 H-MRSI of the brain.Theory and methodsA novel strategy is formulated to learn a low-dimensional subspace representation of MR spectra from specially acquired training data and use the learned subspace for general MRSI experiments. Specifically, the subspace learning problem is formulated as learning "empirical" distributions of molecule-specific spectral parameters (e.g., concentrations, lineshapes, and frequency shifts) by integrating physics-based model and the training data. The learned spectral parameters and quantum mechanical simulation basis can then be combined to construct acquisition-specific subspace for spatiospectral encoding and processing. High-resolution MRSI acquisitions combining ultrashort-TE/short-TR excitation, sparse sampling, and the elimination of water suppression have been performed to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method.ResultsThe accuracy of the learned subspace and the capability of the proposed method in producing high-resolution 3D 1 H metabolite maps and high-quality spatially resolved spectra (with a nominal resolution of ?2.4 × 2.4 × 3 mm3 in 5 minutes) were demonstrated using phantom and in vivo studies. By eliminating water suppression, we are also able to extract valuable information from the water signals for data processing ( B0 map, frequency drift, and coil sensitivity) as well as for mapping tissue susceptibility and relaxation parameters.ConclusionsThe proposed method enables ultrafast 1 H-MRSI of the brain using a learned subspace, eliminating the need of acquiring subject-dependent navigator data (known as D1 ) in the original SPICE technique. It represents a new way to perform MRSI experiments and an important step toward practical applications of high-resolution MRSI.

Scleral fixation of one piece intraocular lens by injector implantation.

Project description:Aim of studyWith an ab-interno technique of transscleral suturing of current one-piece posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PC IOLs) by injector implantation in the absence of capsular support, we aimed to demonstrate the possibility of the implantation of one-piece acrylic PC IOLs that might be produced in the future for only scleral fixation through small clear corneal incision.Materials and methodsCase report and literature review.ResultsThis procedure has been performed in eight aphakic eyes with four different types of IOLs. Good centration was achieved with minimal technical effort. All patients had well-centered and stable lenses postoperatively during 9-18 months follow-up.ConclusionWe managed to decrease the risks of surgical trauma and intricate surgical maneuvers requirement. With this technique, excessive fluid leakage and consecutive hypotony can be minimized.

One piece of the matrilineal puzzle: the socioecology of maternal uncle investment.

Project description:Maternal uncle relationships in which men invest resources (usually in the form of inheritance of material wealth) into their sisters' children are characteristic of matrilineal systems and hypothesized to arise under certain socioecological circumstances, but little research has systematically investigated conditions that are associated with this type of investment. We quantify relationships between household-level socioeconomic variables and different types of maternal uncle investment (direct care and indirect resource investment) within a bilateral, semi-nomadic population. Shodagor people of Bangladesh allow us to consider matrilineal behaviours in an evolutionary framework owing to their flexible social structure in which 39% of families receive some investment from a maternal uncle. Variables associated with direct maternal uncle care reflect the significance of maintaining consistent residence throughout the year and an increased need for childcare in families residing on boats versus those living on the land. Informative predictors of indirect investment indicate that a mother's birth history corresponds with more tangible contributions such as food and clothing. These results identify household-level variables specific to direct versus indirect maternal uncle investment, whereas having more older brothers or being firstborn increased the odds of a mother receiving any investment from brothers at all. Exploring these social and ecological associations in a bilateral, relatively flexible population unveils household circumstances that may lead to the development of female-biased kinship. Efficacy of a One-Piece Aberration Neutral Hydrophobic Acrylic Toric Intraocular Lens.

Project description:PurposeTo assess the refractive outcomes, intraocular centration and rotational stability of the enVista toric intraocular lens (IOL).Patients and methodsThis study was a prospective, multi-centre, double-masked, partially randomized and partially controlled clinical trial. A total of 191 participants were implanted with toric IOL (1.25, 2.00, or 2.75D) or non-toric IOL (control). The lowest range of corneal astigmatic eyes were randomized to 1.25D toric or control. Higher astigmatic powers were allocated to the treatment arm. Subjects were assessed immediately postoperatively, 1-2 (V1), 7-14 (V2), 30-60 (V3) and 120-180 (V4) days postoperatively. Unaided (UDVA) and distance corrected visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction and corneal curvature were assessed. Vector analysis was used to calculate surgically induced refractive correction (SIRC), correction ratio (CR), error magnitude (EM) and error vector (EV). Slit-lamp photography was used to measure centration and rotational stability.ResultsUDVA was better in the low toric IOL group in comparison with the control group at V4 (p<0.001). There was an undercorrection in the control group, whereas the average CR for all toric subjects was 1.00 ± 0.32: V2, 0.98 ± 0.34: V3 and 0.98 ± 0.35: V4. The absolute IOL rotational stability in comparison to the position of the IOL at V1 was 1.35° ± 0.97°: V2, 1.35° ± 1.07°: V3 and 1.38° ± 1.25°: V4. Decentration was generally inferior (V1: 0.04 ± 0.22mm, V2: 0.05± 0.20mm, V3: 0.08 ± 0.22mm, V4: 0.04 ± 0.21mm) and nasal (V1: 0.19 ± 0.23mm, V2: 0.20 ± 0.20mm, V3: 0.20 ± 0.21mm, V4: 0.17 ± 0.22mm).ConclusionParticipants with low levels of corneal astigmatism achieved superior vision and refractive outcomes in the low toric group over the control. Moderate and high levels of astigmatism achieved excellent refractive outcomes. The toric IOL demonstrated high levels of both rotational and centrational stability.

Microsecond fingerprint stimulated Raman spectroscopic imaging by ultrafast tuning and spatial-spectral learning.

Project description:Label-free vibrational imaging by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) provides unprecedented insight into real-time chemical distributions. Specifically, SRS in the fingerprint region (400-1800 cm-1) can resolve multiple chemicals in a complex bio-environment. However, due to the intrinsic weak Raman cross-sections and the lack of ultrafast spectral acquisition schemes with high spectral fidelity, SRS in the fingerprint region is not viable for studying living cells or large-scale tissue samples. Here, we report a fingerprint spectroscopic SRS platform that acquires a distortion-free SRS spectrum at 10 cm-1 spectral resolution within 20 µs using a polygon scanner. Meanwhile, we significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio by employing a spatial-spectral residual learning network, reaching a level comparable to that with 100 times integration. Collectively, our system enables high-speed vibrational spectroscopic imaging of multiple biomolecules in samples ranging from a single live microbe to a tissue slice.

Three Phase-Grating Moire Neutron Interferometer for Large Interferometer Area Applications.

Project description:We demonstrate a three phase-grating moiré neutron interferometer in a highly intense neutron beam as a robust candidate for large area interferometry applications and for the characterization of materials. This novel far-field moiré technique allows for broad wavelength acceptance and relaxed requirements related to fabrication and alignment, thus circumventing the main obstacles associated with perfect crystal neutron interferometry. We observed interference fringes with an interferometer length of 4 m and examined the effects of an aluminum 6061 alloy sample on the coherence of the system. Experiments to measure the autocorrelation length of samples and the universal gravitational constant are proposed and discussed.

A membrane interferometer.

Project description:Freestanding phospholipid bilayers have been assembled spanning shallow, micrometer-sized wells etched into a Si wafer substrate so that the bilayers are near (within hundreds of nanometers) but not in contact with the wafer surface. The proximity of the bilayers to the highly reflective Si/SiO(2) interface allows them to be probed by using fluorescence-interference techniques. These interferometry measurements show that the bilayers are curved and that the curvature can be varied by changes in osmotic pressure. Furthermore, the ionophore gramicidin can be incorporated into the bilayers, making them selectively permeable to monovalent cations. This freestanding architecture may overcome surface-interaction problems that occur when cell membrane proteins are introduced into solid supported bilayers, while also allowing for high-precision measurements of changes in fluorophore position by interferometry.

Piece by piece: Building a ribozyme.

Project description:The ribosome and RNase P are cellular ribonucleoprotein complexes that perform peptide bond synthesis and phosphodiester bond cleavage, respectively. Both are ancient biological assemblies that were already present in the last universal common ancestor of all life. The large subunit rRNA in the ribosome and the RNA subunit of RNase P are the ribozyme components required for catalysis. Here, we explore the idea that these two large ribozymes may have begun their evolutionary odyssey as an assemblage of RNA "fragments" smaller than the contemporary full-length versions and that they transitioned through distinct stages along a pathway that may also be relevant for the evolution of other non-coding RNAs.

Humanising the mouse genome piece by piece.

Project description:To better understand human health and disease, researchers create a wide variety of mouse models that carry human DNA. With recent advances in genome engineering, the targeted replacement of mouse genomic regions with orthologous human sequences has become increasingly viable, ranging from finely tuned humanisation of individual nucleotides and amino acids to the incorporation of many megabases of human DNA. Here, we examine emerging technologies for targeted genomic humanisation, we review the spectrum of existing genomically humanised mouse models and the insights such models have provided, and consider the lessons learned for designing such models in the future.
